Infrared and displacement studies were made of an unsupported roof in Kaiser Steel Corp.'s York Canyon coal mine, Raton, N. Mex. Monitoring of the roof continued until the roof over the area was caved. Loose slabs in the roof, about 6 inches thick, were detected by means of associated thermal anomalies, using remote-sensing infrared instruments. Displacement measurements taken during the study indicate that roof movement was cyclic in nature; the cycles appear to have been related to the mine work cycle (work days to idle days).

The Bureau of Mines, under Congressional mandate, conducted a mineral survey on the Park Range WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in 1984 and 1985. The WSA, located about midway between Tonopah and Ely, encompasses 47,268 acres. No mineral resources were delineated, nor were workings found, during the investigation. There has been, however, exploration in and near the north end of the study area. ASARCO is actively exploring a block of 41 claims for hot-spring type, low-grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. Their claim block is almost entirely in the study area. The Morey mining district, 7 miles southwest of the study area, produced silver and lesser amounts of gold and lead sporadically from the mid-1860's through the mid-1960's. The WSA is underlain by Tertiary rhyolitic and latitic volcanic rocks and by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The Paleozoic rocks have been faulted, silicified, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered, and have anomalous concentrations of precious metals and pathfinder elements. Additional exploration in the north part of the Park Range WSA may lead to delineation of gold resources.

The objective of this study has been to determine the state of the art in underground, thin-seam-mining systems, to identify new technology and procedures that would reduce the hazards of thin-seam mining and to recommend areas for further research. The study was carried out in two phases, the first of these being devoted to a survey of authoritative literature. Subsequently, the practices adopted in the various mining countries were analysed and comparisons made to identify machines and methods with the potential for application in the USA. Published figures on US bituminous coal reserves show the high proportion contained in thin seams and US accident statistics demonstrate that the risk is greater in thin-seam operations. A comparison has been made with the experiences of foreign operations. The Phase 11 study proceeded along two separate avenues to examine the distinctive problems associated with seam thicknesses above and below 30 in. Current systems of mining appropriate to seams greater than 30 in were elaborated and compared by means of a simulation exercise in terms of safety, production and cost. For seams below 30 in, less conventional systems, some presently disused, were studied and their potential evaluated; the research and development work necessary to make them viable has been indicated.

A study of copper cementation on iron was initiated to determine the effect that deposited copper has upon subsequent cementation. A microscopic investigation of cementation on an iron surface showed that cupric ion precipitates predominately on a growing copper deposit attached to the iron surface. A kinetic study of the cementation process in a revolving drum showed that the cementation rate is enhanced by the copper deposit attached to the iron surface and by the discrete copper particles of a cement copper slurry. The kinetic study also indicated that the character of the deposit is affected by the major anion in the solution. The cementation process is visualized to occur as a series of electrochemical cells in which cupric ion precipitates on copper dendrites attached to the iron surface.

Steel and iron pipe lined with cement to protect it against corrosion has been used in the municipal water systems of the New England States since about 1870. In most recent years, the petroleum industry adopted cement-lined pipe to forestall corrosion, particularly in those areas where large quantities of corrosive brines and hydrogen sulfide are associated with the oil produced. Many of the oil companies had on hand large quantities of corroded pipe, normally disposed of as scrap, which could be cleaned, lined with cement, and returned to service. It was soon learned that after the so-called scrap pipe was lined with cement much of it could serve fully as well as new cement-lined pipe. The demand for lining used pipe with cement resulted in the establishment of several processing, plants in the Mid-Continent oil-producing area. Today six cement-lining plants serve the areas three in Oklahoma and one each in Kansas, Texas, and Illinois. All of these plants have lined large quantities of used pipe for the brine-disposal systems of western Kansas, Illinois, and east Texas and also for the operators of water-flooding projects in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, where large quantities of brine and fresh water are being injected into the oil-bearing formations as a secondary oil-recovery method. Since war demands during the past 2 years have created an acute shortage of steel, the need of reclaiming used pipe for the expansion of oil-producing operations has become more evident than ever before. Thus the new industry (about 6 years old) - lining used pipe with cement - is saving large quantities of steel at a critical time by reclaiming used pipe and preventing further- corrosion.

Twelve healthy, experienced underground cool miners performed lifting capacity tests in stooped and kneeling postures using a modified psychophysical procedure. Subjects adjusted weight in a lifting box to the maximum they could handle without undue fatigue in an asymmetric lifting task. Lifting periods were 20 min in duration and the frequency was 10 lifts/min. Tests were performed under a 48-in. roof that restricted the subject&apos;s posture. Psychophysical. physiological, and biomechanical dependent measures included the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), heart rate (HR), rate of oxygen consumption (VO2), ventilation volume rate (VF), respiratory exchange ratio (R), and integrated electromyography (EMG) of eight trunk muscles. Results indicated that the MAWL was significantly lower when kneeling than when stooped (p < 0.05), Furthermore, metabolic demands were greater in terms of HR (p < 0.005) mid VO2 (p < 0.05) when kneeling. Left and tight erectores spinae muscles exhibited increased EMG activity- in the kneeling posture (p < 0.001). It was concluded that psychophysical lifting capacity is decreased, while the metabolic stress and internal load on the spine are increased, in the kneeling posture. Results of this Bureau of Mines study indicate that it may be advisable to reduce the weight of materials that are handled repetitively in the kneeling posture.

As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

The oil fields of Arkansas, all situated in the southern part of the State, have played an important part in the development of petroleum production in the northern coastal plain region of the Mid-Continent area. From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from&apos; this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1938, 6,4595/ producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356/ acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smackover field, which rose td an average of 444,9508/ barrel daily during that year. A mineral resource evaluation of the Coyote-Southeast RARE II area (No. 5033) was performed jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1981 for the U.S. Forest Service RARE II program. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a mineral resource inventory of the study area&apos;s mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized outcrops. The study area&apos;s boundaries encompass 51,700 acres on the east flank of the Sierra Nevada and are within Inyo National Forest southeast of the city of Bishop in east-central California. Cretaceous granite underlies most of the area; the remainder of the rocks are metasedimentary. At the contact of the two, tactites formed at many places where carbonate rocks were present; replacement processes produced local scheelite (calcium tungstate) occurrences.

"INTRODUCTION The operators of the Lake Superior district iron-ore mines have made tremendous progress in the past 25 years in the transportation of broken ore from the working places to the surface. This progress has paid divi¬dends in increased production and in lower accident-frequency rates. The trend has been toward more efficient use of mechanical and electrical power and abolishment of many of the backbraking tasks formerly required of min¬ers and trammers.ScopeTransportation of iron ore as described in this paper covers (1) movement from the working place to ore raises by scrapers, shaker,conveyors, and belt conveyors, and, loading underground cars from chutes or-by scraping from loading drifts; (2) underground haulage, which includes underground cars trains, locomotives, and tracks; (3) shaft station's and hoisting shafts, which. Includes dumping cars, storage-pockets; auxiliary storage trenches, and shafts; (4) hoisting, which consists of skips, cages and hoists; and (5) head frames, loading into railroad cars, and stock-pile haulage.The 19 underground iron-ore mines discussed in this paper, situated in the Menominee, Marquette, Gogebic, Guyana, Mesabi, and Vermilion iron ranges of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota., shipped about 9,000,000 tons of iron ore in 1945, which constituted 56 percent of the underground iron ore taken from the Lake Superior district."

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. "INTRODUCTION The United States, although the leading consumer of chromite, depends almost entirely on imports for its supply. For instance, the consumption during. 1941 amounted to 714,645 long tons, whereas the domestic chromite production, although the highest since 1918, was 12,731 long tons or only 1.78 percent of the domestic consumption. 9/ Domestic production was tremendously, accelerated,after 1941 by war demands; however, only a small proportion of this domestic product was of sufficient quality to be substituted for the high-grade imported chromite demanded for metallurgical purpose. Chromite is used largely for making ferrochromium, an alloy containing 60 to 70 percent chromium which is used in making alloy steels. Peacetime specification for ferrochromium required that it should contain 68 to 69 percent chromium. These specification were lowered to between 60 and 63 percent, chromium in 1941 to permit the use of lower-grade ores. The specifications for metallurgical chromite, used for making ferrochromium, were established first by the Metals Reserve Company at 48 percent Cr203 and a Cr. Fe. ratio of 3 : 1 but later were lowered to 45 percent Cr203 and a Cr : Fe ratio of 2.5 : 1. The ratio of chromium to iron in chromite is important, because the contained iron enters the alloy in making ferrochromium and, although an ore may contain the required 45 percent Cr203, it may contain too much to be suitable for ferrochromium production. The principal sources of domestic chromite are California, Oregon, Montana, and Alaska minor, small, and widely scattered deposits in another dozen States. Without exception, these deposits are low-grade, require beneficiation to produce a commercial product, and are not competitive with imported high-grade ore in normal times. Nevertheless, these deposits form strategic reserve, which must be utilized in periods of national emergency. Recognizing this fact; the Bureau of Mines for many years has undertaken investigations to develop methods of utilizing domestic chromite ores. The problem has been approached from three angles: (1) Mechanical methods of concentration; (2) beneficiation by chemical or metal¬lurgical methods; and (3) production of metallic chromium by electrolysis of solutions prepared from ore or concentrate."

"The detection of leakage is a recognized problem in the safe and economic distribution and use of natural gas. Natural gas is practically odorless and therefore lacks he property of indicating significant leakage by the sense of smell, the means most widely used by gas employees and consumers for detecting leaks of the more odorous types of fuel eases. In view of the recognized value of the odor of gas for indicating leakage at the time of occurrence the Bureau of Mines has studied' the possibility of adding small amounts highly odorous substances to types of fuel gas (such as blue water gas and natural gas) that lack warning properties. These studies revealed that the mercaptans were promising substances to accomplish this purpose, not only for odorizing fuel gases but for other purposes° where it was desired to give warning through the sense of smell.Since completing the studies mentioned, the Bureau of Mines jointly with the American Gas Association has conducted further investigations dealing with the use of warning agents for fuel gases. The results of this work will be published later.The Bureau of Mines had been desirous of observing the practical use of ethyl mercaptan for detecting leakage of natural gas, particularly to determine whether the odor would permeate the ground and give indication of lea's in underground pipes. Opportunity for making these observations was recently given by E. A. Munyan, manager, gas department, Union Gas t Electric Co., who requested the bureau's cooperation in making leakage surveys of the company's distributing systems at Franklin and Middletown, Ohio."

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, examined an underground pillar at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD. Investigations involved strain relief and seismic tomography studies in the mine, and ultrasonic velocity measurements on pillar core in the laboratory. Measured octahedral normal stress was 37 MPa (5,366 psi); seismic P-wave velocities averaged 5.2 km/s (17,060 ft/s); and ultrasonic velocities at a pressure of 39.6 MPa (5,750 psi) averaged 6.3 km/s (20,669 ft/s). The difference between in-mine and laboratory velocities is attributed to the attenuation of seismic energy by mine fractures larger and more numerous than those in the samples of core measured in the laboratory. Using these results, researchers hypothesize that pillar rocks have the ability to withstand stress an order of magnitude greater than they currently sustain.
