The deposits were formed from low-temperature alteration of pyroclastic rocks. Properties investigated include their cation exchange capacity, swelling capacity, pH, rheological properties, the green and dry compressive strengths, shatter index, wet tensile strength, compactability and permeability. It was found that deposits with abundant opal-CT have poor physical properties. The rheological and swelling properties were found to be influenced by the bentonite grade (smectite content) and the degree of disaggregation of the smectite quasi-crystals. The only deposits of high grade which had good foundry properties were those with no opal-CT. Hydrothermal alteration was detrimental to the physical and chemical properties of bentonites in that it decreased the smectite content and the pH and changed the smectite layer charge and the lattice dimensions

A probe suitable for on-line measurements of gas hold-up in industrial flotation systems has been developed. It is based on an open cell for measurement of slurry-gas conductivity and a novel syphon cell for measurement of slurry-only conductivity. The desired behaviour of the two cells was demonstrated and estimates of gas hold-up were shown to be in good agreement with independent measurements. The gas hold-up probe was used as a diagnostic tool to assess the operation of flotation columns. Differences in gas hold-up between baffled sections in two industrial columns were detected

"Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The Mississippi Valley-type deposits occur in massive, homogeneous dolostones from which diagenesis has obliterated all primary sedimentary structures. The mineralisation forms irregular, lens-shaped stratabound bodies, mostly in the lower part of the dolostones. They are composed exclusively of sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite and barite, with white sparry dolomite a common cementing phase. Mineral zoning can be recognised from pyrite and marcasite in the east to barite in the west. Sphalerite, the most common sulphide, occurs basically as colloform and banded crusts and galena as isolated cubic or skeletal crystals, mainly in the centre of the banded botryoidal sphalerite. The combined observations of the deposits' geology, geochemistry and ore petrology suggest a three-stage genetic model: carbonate sedimentation in a shallow-water environment; dolomitisation, probably after compaction, by fluids of connate origin and lateral evolution; and mineralisation by migrating solutions, perhaps related to oil-field brines, that originated in deep zones of the basin during diagenesis of the basinal mudrocks in the NE"

The application of simple methods of statistical analysis, coupled with geostatistical analysis and geographic information systems, can only summarise and give an outline of the spatial distribution of the parameters measured. Spatial analysis of the components or factors calculated, through principal component analysis or factor analysis, allows assessment of the geographical distribution of the dominant processes contributing to soil composition and/or contamination. Neither of these tools, however, distinguishes between the different sources of pollution. The application of canonical correlation to the data, driven by expert appraisal of the potential pollution sources, allows their quantitative and spatial assessment while GIS provides the environment in which to organise and present the results. The methodology is illustrated by its application to soil-contamination data from the Lavrio area in Greece, where silver-bearing orebodies have been mined for more than 25 centuries

A description is given of the approach that has been taken to the design of the 550 000 000 t superquarry with a planned life of 60 years that is proposed for development. The quarry has been designed to replicate a corrie and a sea loch and will include excavated slopes more than 570 m high. The main geological and physical controls on the layout and the choice of development method are outlined. The operation phasing is presented and the geotechnical constraints on slope design and the feasibility of alternative quarry limits are discussed. Environmental considerations have been dominant in planning and the quarry has been specifically designed for closure

The purpose of the cut is to provide a free face to which the remainder of a development or breasting round can break. The results of field testing in drifts and at a quarry face were used as a basis for a description of the rock breakage and flushing mechanism in the cut. It was concluded that the important features of a cut design are proper hole spacing, sufficient relief volume, drilling accuracy and relief holes slightly longer than the planned length of the round. The void space provided by the relief holes should be about 15% of the cut volume, with more required in weak, highly fissured rocks. The importance of drilling accuracy increases with round length, an error being magnified by the small blasthole spacing. The first hole pulls only about 20% of the round length, 4-6 holes having to be fired before the cut is pulled close to its design depth. The first four blastholes should be fired with a minimum inter-hole delay of 100 ms to provide progressive relief of burden and avoid the superimposition of ground vibrations. The earliest-firing charge should be closest to the relief area and act laterally, while the first of the vertically-fired charges to be detonated should be the uppermost. A rock mass responds to excavation according to the properties of the intact rock, the network of contained discontinuities and the susceptibility of the rock mass to weathering. Large deformation often occurs when one of these components causes the rock mass to have a low strength relative to the stress conditions. Analysis of such large deformations forms a significant feature of current numerical modelling in rock mechanics. A practical large deformation problem of roadways in a coal mine is described, demonstrating the requirements for improving numerical techniques. The development of a numerical model is then summarised with particular attention to several concepts pertinent to large deformation analysis in geomechanics. A numerical case study is presented in which the developed finite-element model is used and the results are compared with the in-situ measurements. Conclusions are drawn for rock engineering that are also relevant to both civil engineering and mining engineering projects

The role of surface-chemical phenomena and the physical processes that participate in the dewatering of a suspension of alumina trihydrate were subjected to a systematic investigation, which has increased understanding of the influence of surface tension, contact angle and adsorption in the process. The residual moisture content of the cake can be reduced significantly through the use of surface-active agents in slurry pretreatment or as wash-water additives. The effectiveness of a particular surfactant is hard to predict from any single parameter, but is dependent on its ability to reduce surface tension and possibly to modify the solid-liquid contact angle. If scaled up to industrial operation of the dewatering step of the Bayer process in India, the use of these chemical additives could substantially improve its process economics, reducing the fuel costs for thermal drying by a much as Rs 50/t

After measuring the kinetics of Ni reduction from a SiO2-saturated fayalite slag into a Cu-based metallic phase on a laboratory scale, a general model was developed that is capable of simulating mass transfer to and from metal-slag, slag-gas and metal-gas interfaces for multiple species. The model was used to simulate the reactions that occur when Cu and Ni are reduced from fayalite-based slags into a Cu-based metallic phase. The Hg and Sb deposits of the Mediterranean and Circum-Pacific Belts are often found at elevated structural levels, suggesting that their preferential occurrence in young orogenic belts is not a fundamental metallogenic feature but merely reflects their chances of surviving post-orogenic peneplanation. In western Europe their emplacement appears often to be related to late orogenic extensional events accompanied by a notable increase in heat flow. Although Nikitovka and Almaden have quite different settings, both appear to be related to deep-reaching shears. Together with brittle fault zones at higher levels, these provided pathways for fluid phases that originated at least partially within the mantle. The Nikitovka deposits are located in the Donets segment of the 2 000 km Pripyat-Dniepr-Donets palaeorift in the East European Platform. Initiated in the mid-Devonian with a possible Precambrian precursor, its listric boundary faults displace the Moho from a depth of about 50 km north and south of the rift to 35 km along the axes of the Pripyat and Dniepr segments. The steep central anticline of the Donets segment, within which the main Hg-Sb district is located, is interpreted to be associated with a reactivated fault reaching into the upper mantle. The Almaden syncline, formed during the Variscan Orogeny, may be an older pull-apart basin or half-graben associated with the collapse of the Cadomian Orogenic Belt. It is situated on a major ENE-WSW-striking shear zone which may represent a Late Cadomian transfer zone reaching into the mantle

Geomechanical factors at the mine are important and will become even more relevant as the pit expands and deepens. To address these demands a team was assembled to collect geomechanical information and perform numerical analysis. The west wall is the largest and flattest of all the design sectors in the pit and rigorous studies were carried out on this wall. The wall behaviour is controlled mainly by a set of steeply dipping joints within the slope in the Fortuna Granodiorite and a weak zone, the Zona Plastica, that extends vertically near the pit bottom. These features lead to large toppling displacements in the upper portions of the wall. Two numerical models were used to reproduce the general features of failure observed in the wall. The modelling indicated that a toppling mode of failure results from shear on the steeply dipping joints. The toppling leads to slumping or landslides whereby the west wall flows slowly downslope as the Zona Plastica compresses

This combined with the escalating cost, particularly of off-shore operations, is testing the traditional reliance on the skill and judgement of rig operators. AI systems offer enormous scope in enhancing and aiding the performance of these operations

The Ni oxide was reduced with a CO-CO2-N2 gas mixture and the effects were observed of process variables such as roasting temperature, time and CO partial pressure. Extraction of over 90% of Ni was achieved by ammoniacal leaching of ore that had been reduced for 1 h at 760 degrees C under a gas mixture with a volumetric CO/(CO+CO2) ratio of 0.57. The kinetic data were found to conform to the Ginstling-Brounstein equation. The applicability of this model was confirmed by evaluating the apparent activation energy with the use of independently constructed differential and integral plots, which showed an excellent match

In-situ measurements of ground stress were made from surface boreholes, using overcoring and hydrofracturing techniques, to obtain data for the detailed design of the underground works at Pergau. Unexpectedly low stresses were measured and appeared to correlate with apparent hydrofracturing observed during permeability testing. The low values of the minor principal stress had a major impact on design, particularly of the lining for the pressure tunnel and shaft. Additional hydrofracture tests were made underground during construction of the low- and high-pressure headrace tunnels and the pressure shaft, to define the vertical reduction in the minor principal stress with overburden. These data were then used to locate and design the steel and reinforced concrete linings

A study at the Idaho mine revealed that, despite the apparent randomness of seismic events, common characteristics defined five recurring types. These characteristics included the geological structure that slipped, the first-motion pattern and the location and intensity of damage. Many large events caused little or no damage, and where it did occur it was concentrated at intersections between slipping structures and mine openings. Of 39 events between 1989 and 1994 with local magnitudes of 2.5 or more, 10 were caused by slip on bedding planes in the southern limb of the mine, 6 occurred near the vein along a set of near-vertical faults that form the central shear zone, 8 were strike-slip events on the Southern Control Fault, 4 were by slip on the vein itself and 10 involved strike-slip and/or dip-slip movement along the North Control Fault. Strategies for control of mining-induced seismicity need to consider all five types of event, lest a strategy to reduce one type increases others

This paper highlights the strong safety and progressive engineering cultures th at existed and continues within the company. A long-term view of the business coupled with proven professionalism is amply developed. Quite dearly, to revert to private ownership is not a return to Victorian values but ‘back to the future’.

Most, if not all, of the six recognised post-Cretaceous, predominantly andesitic mineralised belts in the region are now thought to be subduction-related magmatic arcs. The Inner Carpathian arc and the Eastern Bosnia or Drina-Rhodope arc host numerous vein and replacement deposits with epithermal features and Zn-Pb+/-Ag as the predominant economic minerals. In contrast, the south Apuseni Mountains have produced over 1 600 t Au from epithermal veins but very little Zn-Pb. Recent age determinations and geophysical data from the Baia Mare district of the Inner Carpathians suggest that mineralisation succeeded volcanism by 1-2 m.y. and accompanied crustal extension and the cooling of a large, mushroom-shaped pluton whose boundaries define the mineral district. In the south Apuseni district, mineralisation can be explained by mixing of meteoric with low-salinity metamorphic water expelled during intrusion of mafic rocks into the middle or lower crust. The more continental or cratonic crust in the Drina-Rhodope and Inner Carpathian arcs precluded the input of low-salinity, Au-bearing metamorphic water; the Zn-Pb deposits formed where convecting meteoric water mixed with saline water, possibly introduced through carbonate rocks in the basement
