Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are used to investigate Power Draw in a laboratory scale tumbling mill. The mill is run dry in batch mode at different speeds using mono-size charge of glass beads, and is mounted along with a torque transducer to measure power. Particle tracking information from PEPT is used to reconstruct the motion of glass beads and infer the overall charge behavior, while DEM is employed to simulate particle motion and interaction, with collision mechanics calculated using the Hertz-Mindlin contact model. For PEPT and DEM data, the product of torque and average angular velocities in discrete cells are accumulated to obtain mill power. This method is found to be within statistical agreement with measured power for all tests. Spatial distributions plotted from this approach highlight the regions of the mill that draw the greatest power. A second technique to obtain Power Draw from DEM data which sums particle forces against the mill geometry is similarly found to accurately predict mill power with lower statistical error. "Comparison studies of different technologies are performed when selecting optimum option for gold ore and concentrate processing. Methods of ultrafine grinding, oxidizing roasting, bacterial leaching and pressure oxidation are used to extract gold from refractory ores and concentrates. Refractory gold flotation concentrate produced from pyrite-arsenopyrite ores of Bestobe deposit is a case study in this paper. The results of the experimental tests of the direct leaching of flotation concentrate and pre-oxidation products using different methods (oxidizing roasting cinder, pressure oxidation and bacterial leaching cakes) are the following: - cyanidation of original flotation concentrate provides recovery of Au at 46.6 %; - oxidizing roasting increases gold recovery from 46.6 % to 85 %; - BIOX increases gold recovery up to 86 %; - preliminary pressure oxidation of flotation concentrate ensures steadily high Au extraction in the follow-up cyanidation at 94.9-96.5 %. Pressure oxidation and bio-oxidation has changed dramatically the strategy of refractory gold ore processing. These solutions provided for development of ore deposits that considered earlier non-commercial. However, refractory ore processing has a complex character in terms of developing process flowsheet and requires large amount of studies to be performed for each new project. Gold extraction is the basic but not the only criteria to technology selection for gold ore and concentrate processing. Opex and capex, ore reserves, regional geography, developed infrastructure and skill personnel should be considered. Process studies and feasibility study of the developed technology shall be provided for each specific gold ore deposit. INTRODUCTION Due to changes in available feedstock and depletion of easy-to-process ores, refractory ores containing finely disseminated gold and silver in sulphides (primarily, in pyrites and arsenopyrites) are more and more involved into processing. Experts say that such ores amount above 40 % of the world’s gold reserves. Conventional technologies of gold extraction from refractory ores include flotation, roasting and cinder cyanidation (Fraser etal., 1991). However, today’s best available practice for refractory gold ore processing are bacterial (BIOX) and pressure (POX) oxidation."

"In recent years, the scale-up of mechanical flotation machines has been attempted with greater frequency. In contrast, the development of rotor-stator designs has been subject to greater inertia. The rotor-stator components are integral to the operation of mechanical flotation machines, responsible for the key physical processes of solids suspension, gas dispersion and energy dissipation. Design modifications are predicated upon the dual purpose of meeting customer needs while achieving metallurgical performance objectives. Accomplishing the latter is a rigorous undertaking, typically involving the sequential application of fluid dynamics principles, prototyping, smaller-scale research screening studies and larger-scale development projects. This industrial evaluation details the final stages of the forced-air rotor-stator development process using a double-refractory Carlin-type gold ore. A bypass stream of the primary rougher feed was further classified into cyclone underflow and overflow products. Four rotor-stator treatments were evaluated using parallel flotation rows coupled with a randomized statistical design. Only two treatments are compared in this initial assessment. Metallurgical responses were measured as a function of the random variation of key machine factors. Machine characterization measurements complemented the analysis of flotation performance indicators."

This paper reports the results of a detailed mineralogical study of typical, low-grade Australian nickel laterite run-of-mine ores. Successful development of an effective beneficiation process for upgrading such low grade laterite ores relies on good knowledge of the laterite mineralogy and the value metal(s)? distribution characteristics. Both QEMSCAN and quantitative X-ray diffraction techniques were used to conduct the mineralogical analysis of three types of laterite ores, and the results were compared with those obtained by chemical analysis. Some of the major challenges faced included accounting for the mismatch between the nickel values measured by QEMSCAN and those recorded by chemical analysis. This was primarily due to the relatively low concentration of nickel in the ores and its wide dissemination among several major host minerals in complex association. Careful analysis showed that the limit of nickel detection in iron oxide host mineral grains under normal operating conditions was around 4%. "The re-treatment of gold tailing heaps has shown to be a potentially significant revenue stream for both large and small scale gold companies. Limited access to capital and lack of skilled labour remain restrictive especially when dealing with a refractory ore and/or where limited amount of material are available. Alternative techniques such as low temperature pre-leaching options to unlock value are therefore in demand. Several low temperature pre-leaching experiments in acidic and alkaline solutions, followed by cyanidation were performed which ultimately led to the further investigation of a caustic pre-leaching step. It was found that the Au recovery from a refractory ore tailings heap could be significantly improved from ˜ 15 to 20% to greater than 60% with a simple atmospheric NaOH pre-leaching step. It was further considered, that since the NaOH pre-leach liberate the Au associated with refractory sulphide minerals, the overall process may benefit by the inclusion of a froth flotation step to separate refractory sulphides from the free milling ore. Froth flotation on weathered tailing heaps are, however, known to be difficult, ultimately resulting in poor recoveries. A process flow sheet, incorporating a caustic pre-leaching step and a process which includes flotation and caustic pre-leaching of the concentrate, are technically evaluated and ultimately compared to simple cyanide re-processing. INTRODUCTION South Africa consists of a large number of gold tailings dumps. Janse van Rensburg (2016) estimated that there was about 517 dumps in the Gauteng area, covering approximately 320 000 ha of surface area. Recovering value from the dumps has received a great deal of interest but can be problematic due to the dumps often being refractory, preg-robbing and weathered. High recovery of valuable metals (Au and Ag) are possible (Fleming and Brown, 2010) but would most likely require pressure oxidation and subsequent neutralisation which can be very capital intensive demanding a high skill set to operate and maintain. In addition, these flowsheets target high processing tonnages due to the economy of scales at the lower grade feed materials, further increasing the capital requirement."

A review of the laboratory- and pilot plant-scale physical separation techniques for the beneficiation of nickel (Ni) laterites shows limited efficacy. To date, the only upgrade technique adopted commercially, prior to hydrometallurgical processing of Ni laterites, is the removal of a barren, coarse size fraction in the feed by classification. In the present work we investigated two low grade (~ 1%), goethite-rich Ni laterite ores’ upgrading by magnetic separation, attritioning/coarse, (lower Ni-grade) gangue rejection and flotation techniques. Low intensity (0.1T) dry magnetic separation at ambient temperature of raw samples and those pre-heated at temperatures up to 450 °C showed evidence of pay metal Co and Mn bearing asbolane and/or lithiophorite minerals pre-concentration in the magnetic fractions. Ni distribution, however, did not show any noticeable magnetic upgrade but followed the weight distribution. Other ore pre-treatment methods (e.g., desliming and sulphidisation) followed by froth flotation with anionic and cationic reagents also led to noticeable (~35%) Ni upgrade. This is due to the deportment of Ni across several gangue host mineral phases (i.e. Fe oxide/hydroxide and a range of silicate/aluminosilicate minerals). From chemical analysis, after disaggregation of ~ 1% Ni grade feed ore, coarse (-600 + 38 µm) and fine (-38 µm) fractions of ~0.6% and 1.3% Ni grades respectively, were also produced, suggesting that a significant upgrade in Ni content can be achieved by rejecting the + 38 µm fraction with the loss of <40% of the Ni. The ore mineralogy, particularly the complexity and high number of un-liberated Ni-bearing phases, greatly compromises physical separation methods for these ores, with the possible exception of screening after disaggregation of the fines inherent in the run of mine ores.

"The purpose of the work is complex processing of sulphide-magnetite ores with the separation of iron into iron concentrate, copper and noble metals into copper concentrate.The work shows the research results of the material composition of the sulfide-magnetite ore in the South part of the Peschanskoye deposit. According to the research results it is found that ore contains 0.59% of copper, 66% of which is related to chalcopyrite; 39.9% of iron, 81% of which is magnetite and 3.87% is sulfur, 42% of which is associated with pyrrhotite, 65% of which is a monoclinic modification. According to the results of the mineralogical analysis, it is found that the main iron-containing mineral in the ore under study is magnetite, the content of which is 45%. In addition to magnetite, iron is found in carbonates, pyroxenes, amphiboles, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. The main copper mineral in the sample is chalcopyrite; covellite, chalcosine, bornite have a subordinate value. The total content of copper minerals in the sample is about 1%. The processing technology provides the three-stage grinding of the ore to a size of 65% of the class-71 µm; a cycle of copper flotation; a cycle of pyrrhotite flotation; wet magnetic separation of flotation hosts. The following optimal parameters are established for the ore under study: the alkalinity of the slurry is 250-280 g/m3 of free calcium oxide in the liquid phase of the slurry; the duration of the main copper flotation is 20 min; the consumption of butyl potassium xanthate is 20 g/t; the consumption of the foam generator T-92 is 15 g/t; the consumption of copper sulfate for the activation of pyrrhotite is 300 g/t; the magnetic field strength is 1500 Oersteds.A complex flotation-magnetic technology for the enrichment of sulfide-magnetite ore has been developed in the laboratory in order to produce a copper concentrate containing 21.6% of copper with 91.7% extraction and an iron concentrate with 66.5% of iron mass fraction and 1.2% of sulfur with an extraction of iron into the concentrate of 87.9%."

The conventional collector for bauxite mineral is oleic acid, which is highly insoluble and must be used in high dosage in bauxite flotation operations, that is the great drawback of oleic acid in use. A series of hydroxamic acid were synthesized, and their collecting ability to certain minerals in bauxite: diaspore, kaolinite were studied. The collecting power of various reagents to diaspore in an incremental sequence were shown as follows: benzyl hydroxamic acid<amylic hydroxamic ac-id<heptylic hydroxamic acid<oleic acid<octylic hydroxamic acid; while the incremental sequence of the collecting power to kaolinite was like this: benzyl hydroxamic acid<amylic hydroxamic ac-id<heptylic hydroxamic acid<octylic hydroxamic acid<oleic acid. It could be seen that octylic hydroxamic acid had the capability of high collectivity and good selectivity, and octylic hydroxamic acid was chosen to use in the following experiments. Reduced zeta potential showed the adsorption of the anionic collector on the mineral. By the adsorptive capability and IR tests, the adsorption of octylic hydroxamic acid on diaspore was determined to be chemical absorption, which was greater than that of oleic acid, as it was physical absorption. Results of floatation experiments on manually mixed minerals indicated that the collectivity and selectivity of octylic hydroxamic acid were better than oleic acid.

"Two types of slag cooling is used world wide - cooling in ladles and cooling in pits. The flotation comparison of the type cooling regimes was done at Aurubis Bulgaria. In Copper smelter Aurubis Bulgaria (Pirdop), the residual copper in the slags from Flash furnace and Converters is recovered by flotation. The slag flotation plant processes blend of three parts FSF and one part converter slag. The slag processing comprises: pit cooling, crushing, two stages grinding (autogenous and ball) and flotation. The copper content in flotation concentrate is over 20 % and in flotation tail is under 0.5 %. In order to improve the copper recovery, different cooling rate of the liquid slags should be achieved. Three cooling experiments with flash smelting furnace (FSF) slag have been done: two of them in pits with different volume and one cooling experiment in metallic ladle. The ambient air temperature during the cooling tests was from -4 to +4 OC. Laboratory flotation tests in open cycle were done with an aim to compare the slags behaviors cooled at different conditions. In this paper the effect of different cooling on the flotation process will be presented. The copper recovery and distribution by sizes in the tails, copper content in the rougher concentrate, and the concentrate yield are discussed."

"This study was done from a sample of coal mined at the Vale-Mozambique mine, located in Moatize district, Tete Province. The aim of this work is to analyze the reagent system in the flotation of coal fines belonging to the Upper Chipanga layer (UC). Among coal processing methods, flotation stands out as one of the most important for the concentration of this material, in particular in the treatment of fine particles. The total feed of the Vale-Mozambique processing plant is 8,000 tph of coal, where 10% of this feed corresponds to the fine fraction that feeds the flotation circuit. The material used in this study had a particle size of 96% smaller than 0.25 mm. The reagents used in the flotation tests were betacol and diesel oil as hydrophobizing agents and MIBC as frother. The range of betacol concentrations in the first test phase was 200 g/t to 500 g/t, and in the second phase 200g /t to 500g /t while diesel oil and MIBC were kept constant at 300 g/t. The immediate analysis followed the Brazilian standards NBR 8289, NBR 8293, NBR 8290; and NBR 8299. The results showed that it is possible, from a feed with ash content around 22.84%, to obtain products with levels below of 10% ash, with a mass recovery around 50%. The recovery of carbonaceous matter was also evaluated and presented positive results. Complementing this study, the effect of H2O recovery was evaluated and it was observed that for the concentrations of betacol the recoveries ranged from 6 to 9%, and for diesel oil plus MIBC were 4 to 7%.INTRODUCTION Considering the increase in population and energy consumption as humanity has been living along the last decades and the consequent demand for non-renewable natural resources, it is clear the challenge of the mineral industry in the search for new technologies and improvement of the existing ones. This challenge is justified by the need for better industrial results and to meet the market specifications, taking into account the reduction of deposits with higher contents and the need for beneficiation of more complex ores, lower levels and lower release granulometry. Usually in these situations, processes already well-established as the gravimetric (Sampaio and Tavares, 2005) have not good results."

During the mineral processing of pyrites sulphide ores of some deposits of Russia loss of gold with tailings and pyrite concentrates amounts up to 40%~90%. The problem of selective allocation of gold-bearing pyrite is crucial. There are 4 mineralogy-technological groups of pyrite determined in copper-zinc sulphide ores, based on the increase of contents of gold in pyrite. The gold associated with group 4 pyrite contents of 85% the total mass of gold found in the pyrite. The flotation behaviour of the enriched fractions of pyrite (98%), of the allocated from the ore of Gay deposit, were studied essentially in various conditions ?? and the charge of Butyl xanthogenate of potassium (ButX). Some products of selective pyrite flotation were investigated by methods of scanning electronic microscopy, energy-dispersive and X-ray spectral microanalyses, definition of specific resistance and thermoelectric moving force.

It is customary to use more than one stage of flotation to obtain an acceptable level of separation of valuables. Flotation circuit design is usually accomplished by applying empirical rules which usually results in operations not working at their optimum conditions. Given the capabilities of genetic algorithms (GA) in finding an optimum solution in a very disturbed search spaces, they can be used to obtain the desired flotation circuit configuration. In flotation circuit configuration and optimization problem, a combination of metallurgical parameters such as yield and concentrate ash content could be used as the fitness function for the genetic algorithm. The multi-objective nature of the problem justified to use Pareto method to arrive at a set of solutions. The appropriate configuration based on technical or economical considerations could then be chosen. To obtain the fitness function for any given configuration, it is necessary to model every flotation stage. The proposed method was used to find the optimum circuit configuration for a coal washing plant. The objective was to arrive at the highest yield while producing a concentrate with a certain ash content (< 11%). The feed to the flotation circuit was characterized based on the size fractions and their flotation rate constants. Results showed that with a 95% confidence, the absolute difference between the modeled and measured values were 2.9-5.5% for yield and 0.4-1.1% for concentrate ash content. When the proposed GA-based circuit configuration was implemented in the plant, the yield increased from the original value of 57.6% to 65.7% while producing concentrate ash content (10.9%) within acceptable limits. By adding one stage to the current three-stage circuit, it was predicted that the yield could further increase by 3.8% while keeping the quality of the concentrate within the appropriate level. This paper examines the combination of unit technologies in a minerals beneficiation train, and explores the inter-relationship between energy input and water consumption for a given mineralogy and product recovery, as these are two critical environmental issues which affect the overall viability of many minerals plants. In particular, we review constitutive relationships for each of the sub-processes of comminution, flotation, and tailings dewatering, and suggest how these might be integrated into a unified hybrid model, with particle size distribution as the key design variable. Such a model can then be used to explore the trade-offs between different performance objectives (be these technical, economic or environmental) as part of a multiple-objectives optimisation exercise. In this way, it may become practical to envision situations in which concentrate grade and recovery are sacrificed, marginally, in order to reduce energy demand in comminution, and improve overall water recovery. This becomes more relevant as the industry commits to advancing the sustainable development agenda in the face of the increasing life -cycle costs and impacts of minerals processing operations, coupled to declining ore body grades, and the desire to maximise recovery of minor and trace elements. Some specific observations for copper are offered.

"Extreme thermophiles, operating at 65 - 90°C, are finding increasing application in biohydrometallurgy These microorganisms have the advantage of exhibiting better oxidation kinetics in terms of reaction rate and extent of mineral solubilisation. These extreme thermophiles are Archae, characterised by a different cell envelope structure perceived to provide reduced structural strength in comparison to bacterial envelopes, and customised metabolic pathways.The active tank bioleaching process, used for high rate leaching, is conducted in a slurry bioreactor. Here sufficient energy dissipation is required to ensure suspension of the mineral phase as well as to sustain high rates of gas liquid mass transfer. It is well known that subjection to hydrodynamic stress of sufficient magnitude may alter the physiological state of a range of micro-organisms through changed viability (ability of the microbes to grow), metabolic activity and integrity.In this paper, we report on studies carried out to quantify the ability of the extreme thermophile Sulfolobus to withstand the hydrodynamic stress environment generated at high pulp densities in the slurry bioreactor. Both a pyrite system (as a model system) and a chalcopyrite system (as an application) were studied. In laboratory reactor systems, the nature of biological responses to stress induced at high pulp density have been identified in terms of ability of the microbes to grow, their metabolic activity and rate of leaching and cell integrity. Critical operating conditions within the laboratory reactor are identified and the mechanism mediating reduced performance considered."

Based on the scientific investigations on mechanochemical synthesis of metal sulphides from metals or metal compounds and sulphur or sulphur compounds, the article describes the industrial production of nanoscale metal sulphides. Special operational conditions such as inert atmosphere, size and type of the grinding balls, grinding time and specific energy input are taken into consideration. A system configuration for the manufacturing of sulphides at a capacity of 100 kg/h is presented.

Fine coal dewatering is a major problem in the coal industry because the fines hold significant amounts of water and account for two-thirds of the product surface moisture. Present methods include flocculation using polymeric flocculants followed by filtration. But the kinetics of filtration are not favorable with such flocculants. In this study, a novel method involving flocculation with microorganisms for improving the settling rates and dewatering kinetics has been investigated. Two Gram-positive microorganisms, Mycobacterium phlei and Bacillus subtilis were used as bioflocculants. The effect of time, pH and ionic strength of the electrolyte used on adhesion and flocculation were studied. Adhesion tests showed that maximum adsorption occurred in 20 minutes in the pH range of 2-7 and the total amount of bacteria adsorbed was almost the same with both the flocculants. Nearly 98% of the coal flocculated with both the microorganisms in about 5 minutes. The filtration rate of fine coal almost doubled with addition of bacteria and electrolyte and maximum filtration occurred near the point-of-zero-charge of the bacteria.

"Three primary drivers are setting the trend for base and precious metal processing . they are: continued low real base metal prices, environmental concerns, and continued high prices for PGM.s. Low base metal prices are increasing the search for economies of scale and company consolidation as well as the development of some hydrometallurgical technologies. Environmental concerns are pushing for continued reductions in SO2 emissions and hydrometallurgical technologies. The high prices for PGM.s are driving major expansions and a focus on minerals processing recoveries and, to a lesser extent, reductions in the refining metal lockup.In nickel, HPAL operations on laterites have failed economically but Inco is still pursuing some alternatives. BHP-Billiton and others are developing bioleaching alternatives for nickel laterites and sulphides.Copper continues to be dominated by the hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical debate; new hydrometallurgical developments are being tested at several sites whilst the pyrometallurgists continue to make competitive cost and environmental improvements.Gold processing developments are dominated by the use of improved gravity recovery equipment and by the development of thiosulphate as a more environmentally acceptable lixiviant.PGM processing trends are the use of fine grinding technologies, higher power input flotation cells, and new pyrometallurgical technologies. Hydrometallurgical options for some applications are being sought.OVERVIEW The metals industry has remained under price pressure for some time; low and decreasing real prices for most metals have become an expected scenario. Occasional price spikes give some relief but invariably bring expansions and new entrants into an already oversupplied commodity market, thus leading to the continued price pressure. Technical innovation, economies of scale, and improved work systems are continually sought, so as to improve the competitive position of each individual company in such a climate; however, these developments add to the downward price pressure. In such a situation the application of scarce funds to research and development is a difficult task. Excess funding is not available in tight economic times and yet the main route to higher profits is clearly the application of technical developments to lower the cost of producing a metal commodity. Many technical centers have closed as a cost saving exercise and some have coalesced to obtain economies of scale. The Australian based AMIRA research organisation has grown to serve the R&D part of the market well in Australia and in South Africa by acting as the catalyst to form research partnerships between a number of industry players and as an administrator to direct the funding of research projects towards the various applicable research institutions. AMIRA has developed closer ties to Camiro (Canadian Mining Research Organisation) through the appointment of Camiro.s metallurgical processing research director as AMIRA.s North American based director. AMIRA is continuing discussions with MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation) in regard to a merger, with a report outlining the merger proposal expected in March of 2003. Company focused research centers continue to be effective at Anglo American Research Labs, Teck-Cominco Research, Falconbridge Research center, Inco Research and some others."

"Two low grade calcium bentonite (Ca-bentonite) from Hejia (HJ) and Boteng (BT), Shandong, China, mainly contain montmorillonite and quartz, and slightly feldspar, calcite, and montmorillonite content are 32.37% and 55.90%, respectively. In order to examine the feasibility to produce activated clay to meet the standard of Chinese chemical industry (HG/T2569-2007), three types of industrial production process are proposed according to the screen test. The first process is grinding the raw bentonite to -200 mesh and then activating. The second is to activate the raw bentonite directly, and then classify the production to -200 mesh. The last one is to activate the raw bentonite after purification. Three parameters, which are sulphuric acid strength, ratio of liquid to solid and treatment time, are optimized via orthogonal test for every process. The preliminary test indicates that it is feasible to produce acid bentonite of difference quality. For the sample of HJ, milling the raw to -200 mesh first and activating afterwards, the parameter is at 9% acid strength, the ratio of liquid to solid 2, the time 4 hours, temperature 90°C, the products can meet the qualified grade for animal and vegetable oils refining. For the sample of BT, milling the raw to -200 mesh first and activating afterwards, the parameter is at 15% acid strength, the ratio of liquid to solid 2.5, the time 2 hours, temperature 90°C, the products can meet the qualified grade of high decolorization for petroleum products refining. For the sample of BT, adopting purification to -325 mesh by stirring and rubbing at first, and then activating at 9% acidity, under the conditions that the ratio of liquid to solid is 2, the time is 2 hours and the temperature is 90°C, the products can meet the first grade of high activation degree for petroleum products refining."

The Bond and the Hardgrove methods are widely used for the determination of the material?s grindability. Generally, the determination of the Bond work index of inhomogeneous materials can be carried out with high deviation using the conventional apparatuses and methods, because of the highly different grindability of components. This is more significant when the composite cement?s grindability is measured, which highly affects the design and operation of cement grinding mills. A possible solution can be the combined application of the Bond-method with the determination of the component?s weight ratio in the product and perform the Bond measurement until the steady state conditions of grindability coefficient (G) and chemical composition of the components are reached. To prove the applicability of the above mentioned idea systematic Bond and Hardgrove grindability tests were carried out of two phase composite materials. The experimental results showed that the application of the combined procedure is proven in order to have a more accurate and reliable calculation of the Bond work index of composite materials, especially when the components have significant difference in the grindability and concentration. The measurements also showed the possibilities and limits of the grindability test methods.
