According to XRD, DTA and SEM detections, the hydration products of blast furnace slag (BFS) based cementing material SL, SLG. were studied in different age periods. The XRD analysis of cementing material SL hydration products showed that the composition of hydration products were mainly amorphous substances, few crystalline substances. Characteristic peak of ettringite hadn?t been found in the spectral line of DTA, and it hadn?t been found in the figures of SEM, either, which was accordant with the conclusion that the cementing performance of SL mainly coming from gel of hydrated calcium silicate (CSH) and hydrated calcium aluminate. However, the main hydration products of SLG are Aft, CSH, and AFm, which are similar to Portland cement. All results suggest that BFS is a suitable base material for cementation. "Water quality and quantity at the Tailing Thickening Section of processing plants is considered to be a crucial factor and impacts the performance of several sections. Therefore, gaining stable and effective performance at the Tailing Thickener Section is one of the principal goals of minerals processing plants. Different factors such as: qualitative and quantitative sustainability of plant feed, the balance between the mass of input and output water flow, the dissolving method and distribution of flocculant and the amount of dirt, solid percent of thickener inlet pulp, affect the performance of Tailing Thickener. The present study investigates the successful improvement of Tailing Thickener performance at Jalal Abad Hematite Iron Ore Concentrate plant through optimizing the above operational parameters. For this purpose, the following optimizations have been done: homogeneity and sustainability of plant input feed rates, fine pulp removal collected by the bag filters at the input of the thickener, adding an quietness box before moving the tail pulp into the thickener to reduce the pulp turbulence, replacing flocculant pump and injection pipes, improving water mass balance which leads to optimizing and stabilizing the concentration of input tail pulp into the thickener, adding a mixer to increase the flocculant preparation time, increasing the locations for adding flocculant to thickener from 1 point to 6 points. Applying the above modifications and monitoring the Tailing Thickener performance over the course of months, has led to the improvement of recovered water quality from 500 ppm to 200 ppm, increasing the solid underflow of the thickener from 40% to 48.5%, and similarly, reducing water loss by 60%. Of other important effects, due to improvement of water quality, grade of final concentrate 0.5% increased and because of 73% increase in monthly working hour, concentrate tonnage 55% increased. Finally, sludge thickener optimization has had a significant effect in selecting and designing the dewatering system from the underflow of the sludge thickener."

Physical principles of two-phase flows with a polyfractional solid phase have not received a sufficient theoretical interpretation as yet. Two-phase flows in the separation mode with a counter-flow of particles are even more complicated. Only statistical methods give an insight into general regularities of such processes. These processes can be interpreted best by analogy with the statistical model of an ideal gas developed by L. Boltzmann, although here a number of difficulties arise. The notion of a statistical system for such flows is substantiated. A mathematical estimation of a statistical system is presented. New notions are introduced, namely, potential extraction of a system and lifting factor. A relationship having the physical meaning of entropy is derived for a two-phase flow in the separation modes. The connection of this new entropy with flow parameters, such as the number of particles, separation factor and chaotizing factor, is established. Properties of this entropy are analyzed, as well as the analogy and difference between this entropy and Boltzmann?s entropy. The notion is formulated and the definition of the chaotizing factor of a process is suggested. In the framework of a statistical approach to two-phase flows in the separation mode, the notion of flow mobility has been formulated. Principal regularities of mass transfer in zone/apparatus sys-tem are analyzed. Principal ideas of a cellular model of the process are formulated, and main relationships for its description are derived. Proceeding from the cellular model, a dependence describing the degree of fractional separation of a narrow size grade is found. The analysis of this dependence makes it possible to reveal the crucial role of the Froude criterion for gravitational separation processes. It is found empirically that this parameter is a basis for the affinization of separation curves (Barsky E, Barsky M, 2006; Barsky, 1980).

In 2004, LKAB decided to start a basic engineering study in expanding its existing production lines at the Malmberget mine site. It was expected that some of the production lines would become bottlenecks with reference to capacity. In this study, the sorting plant is examined and the results show that several unit operations will be limiting under current operating conditions. An additional purpose with the study was to investigate how replacement of some machines would influence performance and if production plans for the coming years might be achieved. Steady-state simulations using the software Modsim? were extensively used to study process performance for different operating conditions, such as iron content and size distribution in run-of-mine ore. Model parameters were derived from pilot plant data and when possible from ex-isting circuits. A complication for the simulations was the lack of relevant data and therefore some of the initial results were only indicative. The result shows that installation of new screens would give a much better operation, but also new crushers would be an improvement. This, since they can be run with full crusher chamber and tighter CSS. During 2007, most of the proposed remedies were implemented and the result is that the bottle-necks are gone, and the grades and material balances are even better than what was envisioned from the simulations.

The detailed researches of a broad circle of problems connected to development of the electric pulse method destruction materials (EPD) of a various nature and area of use are executed. The electrical and power characteristics of process, physical fundamentals of selectivity of a breakdown and destruction are investigated, the device of electric pulse (EP) disaggregation and ?omminution of materials are developed, the technological efficiency of disintegration of industrial minerals estimated. Due to its technological advantages, the EPD could have a great potential in minerals mining and processing technologies. Low specific power and weight-and-size characteristics of EP installations based on the existing out-of-date electric equipment are at present the main reasons hindering the effective application of the method in mining and processing technologies. The main studies carried out in Russia in the field of electro technical equipment development for EP technology are presented. The pulse capacitors service life affects greatly the economic efficiency of the process because the capacitors cost accounts for a considerable, and in some cases, the most part of the operational costs. Determined and analyzed in the study are the ways which could significantly improve the specific characteristics of high voltage pulse generators (VPG), such as to use of high-frequency voltage transformation to develop a charger; to use pulse transformers (PT) with iron magnetic circuits made of materials characterized by high magnetic permeability, in pulse generating circuits; as well as to use special ways which could produce voltage pulses with a short front. The experiments have proved the possibility to adapt these technological solutions for EP devices, and a further strategy of the EP technologies development and application has been suggested on this base. On installing the Metso Superior MK 54x75? primary gyratory crusher in Nkomati mine the crusher experienced severe power spikes greater than 1000kW which subsequently led to the crusher tripping under load while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ores. Likewise significant losses in throughput were also experienced while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ore types. Interestingly the crusher was capable of processing the PCMZ ores without experiencing any power spikes or losses in throughput. Investigations into the challenges faced by the crusher while processing Nkomati?s MMZ ores were conducted using the DEM model in conjunction with the fast breakage model present in Metso?s High Fidelity Simulator. The intentions of the study were to establish the most suitable operating conditions or cavity design that would potentially enhance the performance of the crusher. Likewise an understanding of the effects the feed conditions (size distribution and hardness) had on the crusher?s performance was established. Ore characterization tests were conducted on Nkomati?sPyroxenite, Diabase, Calc silicate and quartzite ores which were from Nkomati?s MMZ ore body. The ore characterization tests conducted were drop weight tests, slow compression tests and elastic modulus tests. Four simulations were conducted used the existing cavity design with various open side settings (OSS) and throws. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s operating conditions on its performance. Four additional simulations were conducted on two cavity designs with reduced volumes. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s cavity design on the crusher?s performance. Thus through the simulations a better understandings of the impact of the crusher design, operating conditions and feed conditions on the crushers performance. Furthermore an analysis of the crusher?s performance was made which was used as a basis for comparisons with the base case simulation. Deposit of Jinbaoshan platinum group metals (PGMs) ore ranks the second in Yunnan province, China. Study on process mineralogy shows that the grade of copper and nickel in the ore is just 0.16% and 0.20% respectively. Moreover, the impurities magnesium and iron and silicon are rich in the ore. The copper and nickel sulfides in the ore, especially the minerals of PGMs, are finely disseminated with the gangues like serpentine. Fine grinding is necessary, and high content of MgO in the concentrate is inevitable through traditional flotation technology on the basis of process mineralogy studies. Achievements on process mineralogy studies are applied to guide the flotation tests successfully. Progress on flotation has been made through comprehensive studies. Suitable grinding by two stages is required for the finely disseminated PGM sulphide ore to achieve the liberation of valuable minerals. Stage grinding and stage separation shall be conducted for a better recovery of valuable minerals. The oxidation state of mineral surface of sulphides has a profound effect on flotation of the ultra-fine sulphides, especially the pentlandite. The combined use of collectors enhances the selective collecting on the ultra-fine and low-grade valuable minerals, is of critical importance.

"Gold (Au) extraction is inefficient when crushed waste mobile phones (WMPs) are directly leached by ammonium thiosulfate likely because of the cementation/precipitation of dissolved Au in the presence of base metals like copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and/or aluminum (Al). This study applied physical separation techniques to remove base metals as well as plastics and concentrate the Au containing fractions from WMPs prior to leaching. Coarse fraction of crushed WMP (+2-5.6 mm) was pretreated by jig and magnetic separation to remove plastics and base metals like Fe, Cu, and Al, while the fine fraction (-2 mm) was pretreated by flotation, and float and sink separation. The leaching results showed that Au extraction increased in both of the size fractions. In the coarse fraction, Au extraction increased by as much as 2-fold after pretreated (from 4 to 7%). Improvement of Au extraction in the fine fractions after pretreatments were even more dramatic. Au extraction increased from 4 to 61%. These results indicate that physical pretreatment to remove co-existing common metals and plastics is effective to improve Au extraction from WMPs. INTRODUCTION Global sales of mobile phones are expected to increase steadily in the foreseeable future because a lot of people buy newer phones with upgraded and more advanced functions almost every two years, which leads to the higher generation of waste mobile phones (WMPs). WMPs contain a wide variety of materials including plastics, glasses, base metals and precious metals such as gold (Au). Among all the valuable materials in WMPs, Au accounts for over 80% of its total metal price (Park et al., 2017), so recovery of Au from WMPs is needed."

A citric acid leaching test after heavy medium separation process was performed to remove the heavy metal contaminat such as Pb, Cu, and Zn from contaminated soil. The lead component was removed from soil by heavy medium separation whereas zinc component shows 0 % - 37.9 % removal ratio with particle size. The citric acid leaching was conducted to remove the remained zinc component. The removal ratio of Zn reached to more than 95 % under the conditions; 10 % in pulp density, 200 rpm in agitation speed, 50 °C, 2 mol/L in citric acid concentration at 2 hrs in leaching time. These results suggest that the heavy medium separation method followed by citric acid leaching is effective for treatment of soil contaminated with various chemical forms of heavy metal. Tangdan copper oxide deposit, the largest independent copper oxide deposit in China so far, is located in the northeast of Yunnan province, southwest of China. The ore from this deposit is characterized by: low grade, high oxidation ratio, and fine-grained disseminated, resulting in poor flotation recovery. The analysis of plant flotation data reveals that the loss of copper minerals into tailings is mainly with coarse size fraction due to insufficient liberation and fine size fractions, especially minus 10 microns fraction, which proved to be very difficult-to-float with conventional flotation. In order to improve the performances of plant flotation of this ore, laboratory flotation tests were conducted with the pure malachite, which was the principle copper oxide mineral in Tangdan copper ore deposit. The results obtained suggested that a finer grinding (up to -325 mesh or even -400 mesh) be needed to decrease the loss with coarse size fraction, and vacuum flotation is a promising way for the recovery of the fine malachite effectively.

"The Chilean Environmental Impact Assessment System (EIAS) of investment projects was created in 1994, date in which the General Environmental Law was enacted. The compulsory environmental approval of projects began in 1997 when the Regulation (S.D. 30/97) was officially issued. By beginning late to regulate the environmental effect of investment projects, Chile could take advantage of the international experience in the matter and therefore, the EIAS has many of the attributes of successful environmental assessment systems elsewhere. Thus, the main characteristics of the Chilean EIAS are: preventive, single-window, specific to certain projects, multi-agency assessment at the regional scale, 3 kind of applications, deadlines, citizen and native communities participation, link to relevant permits, definite conditions of approval/rejection, review of applications by an ad hoc institution. The Chilean EIAS has allowed during the period 1997-2013, the review of 21,110 projects for a total investment value of US$ 408 billion, of which a 76% have been approved. In the case of the mining projects, the corresponding figures for the similar period are 1,257 projects for a total investment value of US$ 119 billion, of which 78% projects were approved. The experience derived from the environmental impact assessment of mining projects indicates that Chile has been successful in linking together mining development with environmental protection. There is still little prejudice against mining and this is a still a largely welcome economic activity at all levels in the relevant regions of the country. The challenge that mining companies face today in Chile is to improve the sustainability of projects and operations, by learning to share scarce and valuable resources (water, glaciers, renewable energy) with the local and native communities, through a process of dialogue whereby mining development also generates benefits for these communities."

"Recently, in order to extract metals, the industry is trying to process old metallurgical slag. The material requires very fine grinding that results in enhanced slime-formation. This in turn leads to problems in the course of the flotation process and to a loss of metal. In addition, it causes difficulties in the wastewater treatment aimed at water reuse. The aggregation and separation of the fine particles and their further subjecting to mineral processing would result in more efficient use of raw materials. Closing the water cycle also would be facilitated. The paper presents results from studying sixteen flocculation reagents, commercially available for treating municipal wastewater, including products based on nanotechnology, for their ability to rend the production wastewater in suitable for reuse in the flotation. It turned out that, from all studied reagents, the cationic C-587 is suitable for the purpose. Some of reagents were studied for their ability to flocculate selectively, in presence of coke fines, rich in copper fines which are produced at grinding of a slag from lead-zinc metallurgy. Most promising reagents are chosen, based on the chemical analysis of the flocculated materials. Open-cycle rough copper flotation experiments with the flocculated fines and recycled wastewater gave encouraging results."

"The Circular Economy (CE) will play an important role in shaping a resource-efficient society. Enabling this transformation from a linear to a CE requires precise quantification of resource efficiency and thus the economic viability of the system. Based on the development of simulation tools of classical minerals processing and process metallurgy, the Outotec (2018) HSC simulation platform could be further developed (gleaning from many academically published works of the author listed below), permitting the simulation of the CE system and to subsequently calculate its resource efficiency. It enables the estimation of a simulation-based Recycling Index (RI) from a product’s Bill of Material (BoM) and Full Material Declaration (FMD). It is a unique methodology for Design for Recycling (DfR) based on minerals engineering linked to a deep understanding of minerals and metallurgical process engineering. A key to this simulation is a detailed understanding of the mineralogy (both geological and designed) of the CE system and its many products, materials and systems, both in a geological mineral and a product-designer-mineral sense. In addition, a detailed understanding and quantification of the thermodynamic properties of the system (both energy and exergy/entropy) is key to understanding its economics and its limitations. With this approach, the actual losses of the CE system are shown and thus highlights the limits of the CE as defined by minerals and metallurgical process engineering principles. INTRODUCTION From the dawn of the industrial era up to today, many of our products have been created according to the principles of a linear economy: we find resources, make a product, and then dispose of it when we are done using it. But in recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to move to a Circular Economy (CE), an approach that aims to maximize the usefulness of products, components and materials across the entire lifecycle. In terms of recycling, this means achieving maximum recovery of materials once products reach the end of their usable life while also maximizing resource efficiency. Of importance is therefore also not only the recovery of critical technology elements that make the CE system run, but also the criticality of the metallurgical infrastructure that must be present to recover these elements economically. Ellen Macarthur (2017) defines the CE as “Looking beyond the current ""take, make and dispose” extractive industrial model, the circular economy is restorative and regenerative by design. Relying on system-wide innovation, it aims to redefine products and services to design waste out, while minimising negative impacts. Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy sources, the circular model builds economic, natural and social capital.” However, when translating this significant message to images, it is striking that the key extractive industry is not depicted in the Ellen Macarthur as well as EU depiction of a CE (EU 2015). Other CE discussions are also wanting in their fundamental detail and description e.g. Accenture (2015) and Beaulieu et al. (2016)."

A detailed study was undertaken to beneficiate sub-grade iron ore sample from Kenojhar District, Orissa, India containing 57% Fe (T), 7.7% SiO2, 4.8% Al2O3, 4 % L.O.I. 0.4% TiO2,1.3 % Mn and traces of S(T) to make it suitable for the user industry. The mineralogical study indicated that it predominantly consists of haematite with subordinate amounts of goethite and clay. Quartz, Cryptomelane / Psilomelane, Pyrolusite, Gibbsite, Feldspar and Muscovite mica were present in very minor to trace amounts. The Denver grind ability tests indicated, that the sample could be categorized as ?medium soft to medium.? The Bond ball mill work index was determined to be 14.19 kwh per short ton. The beneficiation process involved classification followed by tabling of the classified sand, ground to minus 48 mesh size. The table slimes were subjected to Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). The developed process yielded a composite concentrate from tabling and WHIMS operations assaying 65% Fe(T), 2% SiO2, 1.8% Al2O3, 2% Mn and 0.9% LOI with a recovery of 60.1% Fe (T), amounting to 52.5 wt.% yield. To meet the size specifications for pellet making, it was further ground. Dewatering studies were also carried out on the ground combined concentrate and rejects. The thickener area of ground combined concentrate using 0.02 kg/t of Sufloc A 1115 flocculant was 0.02 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. And for the combined rejects using 0.12 kg/t of flocculant, it was 0.035 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. The moisture content, in the pressure filtration cake, in the ground combined concentrate product was 10.0%, and productivity was 506.7 kg/m2h. Thus, by thickening and filtration of process products, 90% of water used in the process could be recovered. The study highlights the development of a simple and cost effective flowsheet with almost complete water recovery for a subgrade iron ore sample. Keywords: tabling, WHIMS, thickener, filtration

In this study, Ca-bentonite was subjected to a series of systematic hydrocyclone tests with the aim of developing separation procedures and in turn achieving optimum recoveries. In hydrocyclone tests, vortex and apex diameters and also feed pressures were investigated. In each hydrocyclone set, vortex diameter was kept constant while the other two parameters varied to produce bentonites con-centrates of various smectite contents. The separation efficiencies were evaluated based on the cation exchange capacity (CEC), particle size and swelling index. The detailed hydrocyclone tests showed that, upgrading of Ca-bentonites require procedures different from the bentonites reported in the literature. Sodium and mixed bentonites are easy- to-disperse and easy-to-separate whereas calcium types need to be scrubbed rigorously for disintegration. Scrubbing properties of ca-bentonite were investigated as a function of scrubbing time and percent solids by weight (PS). The scrubbing conditions at 700 rpm for 1.5 hours and percent solids of 30 % were found more effective for achieving a better quality bentonite. In addition to the parameters mentioned above, the effect of percent solids on hydrocyclone separation was also studied. Although Ca-bentonites permit studying at higher percent solids, increasing solids content of the pulp deteriorated the quality of the clean products. Application of an appropriate separation scheme enabled the development of a unique separation procedure involving stage wise scrubbing followed by hydrocycloning which yielded calcium bentonite concentrates with CEC of 90 meq/100 g and high swelling indexes of 12 mL from the original bentonite of 65 meq/100 g and 7.0 mL, respectively. These results indicate that upgraded bentonite products can be conveniently used in various diverse industrial applications including bleaching earth, desiccant, cat litter, paper etc.

"Covellite is one of the most important copper sulfide minerals. Its behavior during the anodic polarization, as well as its rest potential in various solutions are of importance for flotation processes and also define the mechanism of electrochemical extraction of copper from sulfide minerals.Measurements of the rest potential have been performed in water solutions in presence of different cations and anions. The existence of the Nernst type dependence of the rest potential on the activity of some of the investigated ions was established. The biggest influence on the rest potential of covellite exhibits the change of activities of the ions forming the crystal lattice of investigated mineral, i.e. Cu(II) and S(II). The dependence of the rest potential of covellite on logarithm of Cu(II) activity has a shape of a strait line with a positive slope of 60 mV, while when concentration of S(II) anions increases ten times, the rest potential of covellite decreases about 120 mV. The first dependence was established in acid medium, while the second was registered in alkali one.Different electrochemical techniques have been used for the investigation of the behavior of covellite during anodic polarization. In the basis of all these measurements is a three electrode system consisted of: 1) working electrode made of the sample of natural covellite from the Bor mine (Eastern Serbia, Yugoslavia); 2) reference electrode (saturated calomel electrode) and 3) counter electrode (flat platinum). Electrolyte solutions used in these investigations are of the same kind as those used in the rest potential measurements. Sulfate and chloride solutions, as well as the mixed sulfate/chloride solutions, are the most perspective from the application point of view.Cyclic voltammetry has been the first used method that confirmed the formation of passive layer on the electrode surface during anodic polarization. Elementary data about the reaction mechanism have been obtained too. More detailed data needed for more precise conclusions about the mechanism and rate of the anodic process on covellite have been obtained by galvanostatic method. It was established that the essential difference exists between the reaction mechanism in sulfate and chloride solutions. Also, the difference is exhibited in the nature of reaction product directly connected with the passivation of the electrode surface. Chronopotentiometric investigations have been performed in sulfate, nitrate, chloride perchlorate and mixed sulfate/chloride solutions applying different current densities. The shape of obtained curves indicate if there was a surface passivation and how intensive it was."

The process conditions and mineral characters of cleaning separation stage in magnetite concentration plant are studied in the paper, and the affecting factors and the methods to increase the concentrate grade are analysed and given. The BKJ cleaning special drum magnetic separator is developed specially for the cleaning stage according to process conditions and mineral character. The separation mechanism, structure characters, separation process and excellent adaptability of BKJ special magnetic separator are described. The results in Zhangjiawa Concentration Plant show that the BKJ special drum magnetite separators play an important role in increasing the concentrate grade and improving the economic benefit.

"It was identified that clay minerals adversely affect fine coal flotation through slime coatings. In the study, it was interesting to find that an anionic polymer dispersant, lignosulfonate, successfully mitigated the negative effect of clay minerals in coal flotation using fresh water, but in saline water, it exacerbated coal flotation.In order to understand the mechanisms underpinning the different behaviour of lignosulfonate in coal flotation using fresh and saline water, the adsorption isotherm, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements were conducted in this study. While DLS monitored the molecular conformation change (swelling or shrinking) of the polymer in fresh and saline water, adsorption isotherms enabled polymer adsorbed amount on clay and coal mineral surfaces to be determined. It was found that lignosulfonate adsorbed on the coal and clay mineral surfaces providing effective electrostatic repulsions and resulting in a mitigation of clay minerals from coal surfaces in deionised water. In the presence of saline water, however, polymer molecular conformation changed. Polymer molecules were compressed and adsorbed in form of aggregates. The adsorption amount of lignosulfonate on clay minerals increased in saline water. A low dosage of lignosulfonate could not provide sufficient electrosteric repulsion to disperse clay minerals. Moreover, the high adsorption amount of the polymer on coal and clay surfaces led to a more hydrophilic coal surface, and coal flotation was therefore depressed in saline water. This study provides a new insight into understanding the role of anionic polymeric dispersants in mineral flotation using different quality water."

"HPGR (High-Pressure Grinding Rolls) is widely used today for grinding of various kinds of ores such as iron ore or base and precious metal ores. It can be used as first stage of grinding replacing tertiary crusher and SAG mill, but also as regrinding stage to enhance mineral liberation. In addition to better energy efficiency, the advantage of HPGR is to produce much more internal particle fractures allowing faster leaching as it has been demonstrated for some gold ores. This grinding mode of compression and fracture generation also promotes mineral liberation without overgrinding. Mineral processing modelling and simulation associated to detailed ore characterization constitute a powerful tool for plant design and optimization. The mathematical models of the units of operations (grinding and separation) have to reproduce the mineral deportment for which the mineral liberation plays a central role. The present paper is focused on the HPGR modelling with the objective of plant optimization or advanced design from pilot plant tests. The traditional approach of the population balance linked to the energy dissipation and the residence time distribution is generalized in association with a mineral liberation model. The effect of the specific HPGR breakage matrix and grinding function on the mineral liberation rate is discussed and compared to the tumbling mill. The implementation of this mathematical model into a plant simulation tool is illustrated by the example of the optimization of an iron ore concentrator."

"Three important components of stirred tanks involved in energy consumption, the impellers and baffles, were investigated to intensify the agitation pretreatment on the flotation of nickel ores. Flotation tests revealed that the stirred tanks with two impellers had an advantage over those with one impeller in intensifying agitation pretreatment, and the higher agitation speed led to better flotation performance of nickel ores. Installation and removal of baffles were also employed in the stirred tanks, and flotation tests demonstrated that with baffles, the flotation grade increased significantly. These agitator design improvements were used to demonstrate that the energy supplied to the system significantly influences the flotation recovery and that if the energy consumption of the agitation pretreatment is ideal, flotation efficiency can be improved. Data from full-scale operations backed up these results.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of nickel-copper sulphide ore at the Western China nickel mine has historically been difficult due to the presence of large amounts of serpentine minerals (Feng, et al., 2012). Many studies reported that serpentine minerals tend to have a positive potential at pH values up to 9.5, while sulphides (such as pentlandite and chalcopyrite) have a low isoelectric point(Feng, et al., 2012). Serpentine minerals can form surface coatings on negatively charged sulphides surface due to electrostatic attraction when they interact with each other, which may also reduce collector adsorption and increase the hydrophilicity of the sulphide particles. In order to improve the flotation of nickel sulphides, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and other agents are used to disperse serpentine coating from sulphide surfaces in the flotation of the Jinchuan deposit and other nickel ores in China ( Kirjavainen and Heiskanen, 2007; Lu, et al., 2011). However, it is difficult to improve of the sulphide flotation due to the high dosage and the lack of selectivity."
