"The research aimed at solving the problem of measuring instantaneous local physical quantities for multiphase flows in mineral processing, which are common in minerals industry and with significant challenges. Due to the lack of proper measurement tools currently in minerals industry, multiphase flows (such as in flotation cell) are treated as in a “black-box”. It is crucial to develop measurement technique by which the acquired processing data can be used for process optimization and control. By measuring the conductivity distribution across a measurement area, Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) has been adopted by many researchers to monitor and investigate many processes involving multiphase flows in other industry sectors. A compact ERT probe was built and then used to measure the conductivity distribution within a few flotation machines. In a flowing foam flotation column, the results showed that ERT can accurately measure the change of liquid content (high conductivity fluid distribution). In another part of work, based on the Green-Kubo relations, ERT can measure turbulence via the fluctuation of conductivity caused by bubbles moving through the measurement area, changing the density of the fluid. The tests with the Metso 3 m3 RCS flotation cell were also carried out for turbulence measurement under different air rates and impeller speeds. The results of flotation cell from ERT measurement showed that varying impeller speed had more pronounced influence than changing air rate. When impeller speed is increased, the size of the high turbulent zone increases. ERT is a powerful technique that has the potential to be used for a wider range of applications. The future work will be carried out with more case studies and expanded to more processes such as leaching process, high temperature flows in further downstream production chain (steel making process and alloy manufacturing process).INTRODUCTIONMultiphase flows constitute a majority of the naturally-occurring and industrially-relevant flows, especially in mineral processing. Some of the measurement techniques have been used for the study of fluid characteristics. Optical techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry (Kyselaa et al., 2013) and Particle Image Velocimetry (Nobach and Bodenschatz, 2009) can produce accurate measurement results with high spatial and temporal resolution, but their applications are limited to transparent flows. Hot wire probes (Amini et al., 2013) have high spatial and temporal resolution in turbulence quantification, but they are susceptible to environmental factors."

Green pellet strength including drop number and green compression is highly depended on particles size and shape. The used grinding method, ball mill or high pressure grinding roll (HPGR), directly vary the particle size and shape. Considering mode of pellet crack, green pellet is composed of particle-binder-moisture system. Different type of forces existed in such a system to create a stable green pellet: solid particle interaction, magnetic, binding and cohesive forces in the interface of particle-moisture. The pellet failure can occur at solid-liquid interface and/or through liquid phase. Pellet crack occurs when crack passed through entirely the plane failure. In this research, the effect of particle size and shape of pellet feed on green pellet strength has been investigated. It was deduced that green pellet strength highly improved by increase of specific surface area. The drop number and green compression strength of pellets prepared by HPGR was higher than ball mill. It was found that the main reason responsible for this difference was the particle shape. Capillary force is responsible for part of pellet force and improves by decrease of particle size. Also more elongated shape of HPGR particles resulted in higher capillary force due to thinner interface layer between particles. The less circular shape of particles lead to improvement of capillary force as can be occurred for HPGR particles. The rougher shape of HPGR particles resulted in higher wettability of particles and better diffusion of water among particles. In fact the rougher particles means lower connection angle. Aspect ratio of particles was of great importance of crack growth because the required energy of pellet failure increases directly. The required energy for pellet failure increases by increment of particle aspect ratio. The relationship among crack failure force, roughness and aspect ratio has been modeled considering 3 shape descriptors.

Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

In recent years, coal beneficiation has gotten considerable attention. Selective oil agglomeration has been accepted as the best method to produce clean coal with a high removal of pyrite sulphur. In this study, spherical oil agglomeration of Datong coal fines was carried out using diesel oil as a bridging liquid. The oil agglomeration has a surface properties based on coal cleaning technique. The effects of fundamental parameters have been investigated including the concentration of bridging liquid, the size of coal particle, the solid content of slurry, the agitation time and rate, pH, surfactants on the agglomeration performance and various salts on the ash rejection and removal of pyrite of the agglomerated products. The optimum conditions of particle size, diesel concentration, solid content, agitation speed and time, pH and the dosage of active agent have been determined as less than 8µm, 20wt%, 1200r/min and 10 minutes, 7.5g/t and 100g/t, respectively. Under these conditions the ash content in the products can be achieved 1.5% below, the ash rejection was up to 92%. It has been observed that ionic strength of the aqueous medium affects the agglomeration performance. The precombustion coal cleaning process based on improved selective agglomeration results in high ash and pyrite sulphur removals. Over 80% removal of pyrite sulphur can be achieved from run-of-mine coals by offering a more cost-effective sulphur reduction solution rather than any other SO2 removal technology. In addition, the removal of pyrite sulphur is very necessary for not only the prevention of environmental pollution but also economical reasons.

"The copper mining industry in Chile and perhaps in other countries as well is faced with the challenge to implement the best practices in order to achieve a sustainable and more environment-friendly growth. Relationships between mining industry and society have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. Whereas the ore grade has declined continuously, this has involved an intensive energy and water consumption thus increasing operational costs at different stages of the concentration process. In the case of copper sulphide ore concentration, froth flotation is the main technology used worldwide. The amount of the different chemical reagents used in flotation plants (i.e., collectors, depressants, frothers and modifiers) affects significantly production costs and has a negative effect on the environment as well. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the use of biosolids and their main components (i.e., glucose, proteins and humic substances) as more environment-friendly flotation collectors for chalcopyrite and molybdenite. For this purpose, microflotation tests were conducted in a modified Hallimond tube. In addition, FTIR and zeta potential experiments were performed to investigate the interaction of biosolids with these sulphide minerals. Biosolids and their main components may interact through physical and chemical ways due to different affinities with such sulphide minerals as chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite, which are present in copper sulphide ores. In alkaline pHs, biosolids and their main components make the zeta potential of the sulphide minerals investigated more negative. These results may provide important information concerning the behavior of the main sulphide minerals in the concentration of copper sulphide ores at industrial scale, wherein mill processes could affect their surfaces properties. Therefore, biosolids and their main components may open an opportunity to be used in copper sulphide flotation plants to partially replace conventional reagents, which are more hazardous and less environment-friendly."

Initial experiments towards preparation of hollow ceramic microtubes by dip-coating of fibrous plants with water based alumina gel-casting slurries using hemp and coconut fibres as templates have been done. It has been found that the wettability of fibres and accordingly the stability of the developed ceramic layer on their surface during slurry gelation varied significantly within the different fibre types. Good correlation between the diameters of the template fibres and the resulting channels has been found at the level of solids loadings used, 31 %. Hemp fibres used as bundles have led to formation of multi channel patterns while the coconut fibres-templated process resulted in uniform monochannel materials. The micro tubes have show good mechanical handling.

Phenyl malonic acid (PMA), a new chelating collector, which contains a phenyl structure and a malonic acid chelating group, has been synthesized and its collecting capabilities to calamine, hematite, quartz and hemimorphite are also studied in laboratory. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the PMA has somewhat flotation ability to calamine, hematite and quartz, while it nearly has no collecting ability to hemimorphite. With the increase of PMA concentration, the flotation recovery of calamine increases. When the dosage of PMA was 560g/t and at pH=7~9, the flotation recovery of calamine gets its maximum of 45.94%. The test results about the influence of pH on the flotation recovery of quartz show that the flotation recovery increases with the increase of pH, and the maximal flotation recovery can be gained in alkaline media. On the other hand, PMA has stronger flotation capability to hematite than to other minerals. The flotation recovery of minerals increases with increase of PMA concentration. When the dosage of PMA is 560g/t and at pH=5~7, the flotation recovery of hematite is 82.96%. Mean-while, the influence of pH on the flotation recovery of hematite was studied and test results showed that, as pH increases, the flotation recovery sharply rises until pH=4, then the increasing rate de-creases outstandingly, at pH=6 the flotation recovery reaches its maximum of 82.96% and it de-creases speedily in alkaline media. Finally, through the measurement of infrared spectroscopy and in terms of solution chemistry of collector, the flotation mechanism has been discussed. It was concluded that the adsorption of PMA on minerals surface is chemical adsorption in nature through two oxygen atoms in the polar group of phenyl malonic acid chelating with the metal ions of minerals surface to form a hexagon-cycle chelate complex: C(=O)-O-M-O-(O=)C.

Despite increasing demand, the supply of silver is limited by its inadequate recovery from ores. Due to its scarcity in nature, its high ore variability and complex mineralogy of current silver deposits, its recovery by mineral froth flotation presents a real challenge for process engineers. A silver ore often contains significant amounts of five to ten different silver minerals and knowledge of the mineralogy is a necessary precursor to flotation testing. In this work, a complex silver ore was treated by using batch laboratory flotation, in an effort to find the best experimental conditions to obtain the optimal silver recovery. Mineralogical characterization of feed samples was conducted using a combination of tools, namely the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), which indicated that most of the silver occurred as ?invisible? silver in pyrite. The pyrite assay of the ore was approximately 4%. The ore was processed in two flotation stages. The first stage, sulphide flotation, aimed to collect a sulphide mineral rich concentrate; then a non-sulphide flotation stage was performed by adding sodium sulphide and collectors to the remaining material in the cell, with the objective of obtaining a pyrite rich concentrate. To reach the target recovery of silver from this ore, various variables were altered. In the first stage: mixed collectors, activators, dispersants, and mainstream inert grinding were assessed. In the second stage, the conditions for sulphidization and subsequent flotation were both investigated. From the grade recovery curves for silver and sulphur it was possible to observe a similar metallurgical behavior for both elements, supporting the results given by the mineralogical characterization. Bayer red mud is a highly alkaline residue produced by the alumina industry through the Bayer process. Its disposal is a worldwide problem. The high alkali content and poor pozzolanic activity is aconstraint for its utilization on construction materials. In this study, the red mud was activated through an alkali-thermal method to improve its activity so that it can be utilized in geopolymerization. The red mud was mixed with different amounts of sodium hydroxide, and calcined under 800 °C to produce geopolymer precursors, and then mixed with water directly to prepare one-part geopolymer. X-ray diffraction was conducted to study the phase transformation of red mud and the mechanism of its geopolymerization. Nitrogen Isothermal Adsorption tests were conducted to analyze the pore structure of the geopolymer binders. The results show that calcinations with alkali would promote the Al in red mud transforming into glassy SiO2 to form the N-A-S phase which is soluble in water. When the red mud was calcined at 800 °C with a Na2O addition more than 10%, the dissolving of Si and Al from red mud was greatly improved. The thermal-alkali activated red mud with 10% Na2O obtaining a compressive strength of 9.77 MPa after it reacted with water and cured for 7 days at 20 °C and 95% RH. But the strength decreased as the curing time extended to 28 days. The reason is suggested to be that the polymerization of Al-O and Si-O is unstable due to the low Si/Al ratio of red mud. The alkali in the structure dissolves again into the pore water and corrupts the pore structure. Therefore, the thermal-alkali red mud should be combined with other reactive aluminosilicate materials such as granulated blast furnace slag to absorb the alkali released by the thermal-alkali red mud at the latter curing days.

Conventional spirals are capable of providing excellent clean coal recovery, although at a relatively high ash content. Compound spirals, which provide two stages of spiral cleaning in a single taller unit, have been commercialized in recent years to improve upon the cleaning performance obtained from conventional spirals. The present study aimed at optimizing the performance obtained from a compound spiral for cleaning especially high sulfur fine and ultrafine coal. Industrial-scale spiral units were utilized for this study in a pilot-scale facility at the Illinois Coal Development Park. A statistically designed experimental program was conducted to optimize ash and sulfur cleaning performance of the compound spiral. It was found that significant cleaning of ultrafine coal (i.e., 150 microns × 45 microns and even 45 microns × 25 microns size coal) is achievable with the compound spiral. However, operating conditions for cleaning finer coal fractions (-150 microns size coal) have to be significantly different from those used to clean coarser coal fractions (+150 microns size coal). The sulfur rejection trends were different from ash separation efficiency trends in all size fractions except 45 microns × 25 microns. The probable error (Ep) and effective specific gravity of separation (SG50c) determined for the compound spiral cleaning of the overall particle size were as low as 0.07 and 1.62, respectively. However, the bypass of a small percentage of clean coal to the tailings stream of the compound spiral, may need further adjustment of the key process parameters.

Hydrocyclones have been used extensively for more than 100 years to classify mineral slurries for recirculation in grinding circuits. Sometimes hydrocyclone classification is carried out in more than one stage to improve the efficiency of classification. Factors affecting separation efficiency include fluid velocity, density, and viscosity as well as the mass, size, and density of the particles. The geometric configuration also affects its efficiency; it includes parameters like cyclone diameter, underflow and overflow diameter, position of vortex finder, height of the cyclone, feed inlet geometry, and diameter etc. Besides changes in the basic parameters some modifications in cyclone has also been introduced from time to time which have affected its efficiency, some of these are :-(i).Introduction of magnetic force along with the centrifugal and drag force to control the flow of the magnetic particles inside the chamber.(ii). Introduction of sparger, air is introduced in the chamber in the form of bubbles, to control the flow of fine particles and hydrophobic particles. (iii). Introduction of dilution technologies for the dilution of thickened underflow. (iv).Introduction of new model. In spite of wide use and simple geometry, the real working principle of hydrocyclone chamber is extremely complex because of the swirling turbulent flow inside the device. In order to get more knowledge about hydrocyclones and to increase its efficiency, past 10-15 years simulation techniques are being developed. The simulation models also enabled a deeper insight into the static and dynamic behavior of hydrocyclones. Therefore, more emphasis on simulations by methods like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element method (FEM) is given. Overall, a status review of the work carried out on the analysis of hydrocyclone performance, modeling approaches and its contribution in the efficiency of mineral processing operation is highlighted.

"Russia is among the nations holding the world's largest lithium ore reserves. Lithium is of key importance for the global economy. Therefore, it is important to review the current state of technology research aimed at finding the most effective solutions for the recovery of lithium from promising reserves in Russia. In Russia, a number of process solutions for the flotation of spodumene into salable concentrate (5% Li2O) have been implemented at the earlier existing complex low-grade ore concentration project. By applying these solutions, a sample of high-grade spodumene ore (4.7% Li2O) of the Greenbushes deposit was processed into a spodumene concentrate (7.5% Li2O) at a high recovery (~93%) of lithium. In Australia and Canada, new processes have been developed for the recovery of high-grade spodumene concentrates from high-grade ores using dense medium separation and flotation. For the recovery of mica lithium concentrates from low-grade ore, a flotation process was developed in Russia using the cationic collector ANP-2 and Oxifos-B as an additional collector. Low-grade ore containing 0.14% of lithium oxide was processed into a 2.7% Li2O concentrate. New hydrometallurgical lithium concentrate and ore processes are developed to avoid high-temperature (>1000 °C) roasting. The Sileach process (Australia) includes leaching of lithium ore with sulfuric acid in the presence of a halogen-containing component at a temperature of 95-115 °C. In the Russian process, lithium is recovered into an alkaline solution from low-grade spodumene ore in a pressure alkaline leaching environment (250 °C, NaOH concentration > 300 g/l). The developed concentration and hydrometallurgical methods will allow to design on their basis efficient processes for recovering salable products for hi-tech industries from lithium ores.INTRODUCTION Lithium has many unique and important properties. It is the least dense hard metal. Its alloys have some of the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Lithium has the lowest melting point of all known solid elements and is used as a highly-effective heat transfer medium. The high demand for lithium is due primarily to its unique electrochemical potential and low thermal expansion coefficient. It is used in the production of glass and ceramics, in petrochemicals, metals, medical and other industries. Since the late 20th century, the electronics industry has been the largest consumer of lithium. In recent years, lithium has attracted much attention also as an important component of ultra-lightweight electronic devices. It is also the preferred metal for electric batteries used in mobile electronic devices, vehicles, household power generators, making it an important resource for the development of environmentally friendly technology. Leading automotive brands have ambitious plans for the production of electric cars — Tesla Motors, VW, Toyota, GM, BYD Auto. It is expected that the production of electric vehicles alone will triple the demand for lithium by 2025. A sharp increase in the production of lithium is expected. "The purpose of the study is to study the feasibility of using sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (DDP) to enhance the recovery of platinum group elements from low-grade refractory copper-nickel ores characterized by a portion of nickel and platinum group elements (PGEs) locked in the dominant sulfide mineral — pyrrhotite. These ore characteristics dictate the need to produce a bulk PGE-containing sulfide concentrate due to the difficulties of producing selective concentrates without a significant loss of the metals.New data on the adsorption and flotation performance of DDP-containing collectors were obtained by measuring the electrode potential, hydrophobicity of the sulfide mineral surfaces and by means of extraction spectrophotometry and flotation studies. The interaction between DDP, pyrrhotite, and pentlandite leads to the formation of surface hydrophobic layers consisting mainly of disulfide and a small amount of metal compounds. These adsorption layers are formed by the reaction with butyl xanthate. In the case of cooperite, DDP reacts with the surface, forming not only disulfide, as in the case of butyl xanthate, but also a complex platinum compound. DDP-containing agents demonstrate stronger collecting properties with respect to sulfide minerals of copper-nickel ores compared to butyl xanthate, which is explained by a stronger hydrophobizing effect and foaming properties.The addition of a combination of DDP-containing agents and butyl xanthate at a ratio of 3:1 for the recovery of sulfides and PGEs in the bulk flotation of copper-nickel ore made it possible to improve the recovery of Ni, Pt, and Pd by 13.6, 9.2, and 9.4%, respectively, relative to the recovery achieved in flotation with butyl xanthate.Bulk flotation with the addition of a composition of DDP-containing agents and butyl xanthate allows the most complete recovery of all valuable elements and is the only technologically feasible method for processing of lowgrade ores, when it is impossible to produce without loss high-grade selective concentrates suitable for smelting."

"For non-sulphide minerals such as oxidized minerals, fluoride minerals, and oxysalt minerals, there are generality in the molecular structure of their floating collectors, and similarity in crystal structure of the minerals. In the paper, adsorbing mechanism of these collectors on the surface of these mineral particles in different pH pulp was investigated by means of Pauling's rules & valence bond theory, Valence-shell electron pair repulsion theory (VSEPR) theory, Crystal and ligand field theory, and quantum chemistry simulation by DMol3 and CASTEP modules of Material Studio software. Besides, the role and status of hydrogen bond in the floating adsorption mechanism were studied emphatically, and the confirmation and characterization of hydrogen bond were explored also based on the test results. What is more, the conclusion “the effect of hydrogen bond can not be overlooked in adsorbing mechanism of flotation collectors on the minerals” and a new viewpoint of multi-polarity collaboration and hydrogen bond coupling were summarized eventually based on analysis of the measurements. Finally, a novel collector 2-Amino-3-Methyl Heptyloxy-Propylamine (AMHP) was developed based on the new viewpoint of molecular structure design, and its collecting performance was exhibited.INTRODUCTIONWhen it comes to the recovery of flotation, it is necessary for researchers to investigate the flotation mechanism of collectors. In traditional theory, when collectors were used to collect minerals, the attractions between collectors and minerals were divided into chemical, electrostatic and physical attractions (Wills, B.A., 2006). Especially, because of the reaction between sulphide minerals and sulphydryl collectors is complex and various mechanism has been proposed (Yoon and Basilio, 1993), when collectors were used to collect non-sulfide minerals, it can be classified into oxyhydryl anionic collectors and cationic collectors. In traditional theory, the adsorption of oxyhydryl anionic collectors were due to water-repulsion, and the adsorption of cationic collectors were due to electrostatic attraction between the polar head of the collector and the charged electrical double layer on the mineral surface (Wills, B.A., 2006)."

"In the raw aluminum production processon electrolyzers with self-baking anodes, during technological operations, flow-regulated treatment and adjustment of the electrolyte chemical composition produced by diesel and floor-rail technology, alumina and fluoride salts are spilled through the ventilation grilles of the electrolysis body aeration channels, leakage in the equipment, machinery and motorized machinery construction elements. As a result of this, a part of the bus station and the level of ± 0 (the basement room with supporting curbstones and columns, on which electrolyzers are installed) are covered with technological raw material. This leads to an increase in the conductor (bus) resistance, contact connections deterioration, cell insulation failure and raw materials loss. For example, at the enterprise ""Rusal-Bratsk"", as a result of the activity, up to 420 tons per month of alumina-containing wastes that are unfit for use in the electrolysis process are formed due to the alumina substantial contamination with salts of iron and silicon, which significantly reduces the technical and economic parameters of the electrolysis process. The main scientific problem is the processing (cleaning) of alumina-containing waste having a complex mineralogical composition of the material, its contrast and structure, from oxides of iron and silicon, using ""dry"" separation methods. In the performing the work process, qualitative indicators of the influence of external factors (air humidity, precipitation, sunlight, temperature difference) on the physicochemical processes components interaction during the raw materials storage are established. On the basis of laboratory tests, it is established that alumina-containing raw materials can be separated and photometric and gravitational separation methods used. A mathematical model of the motion of particles of primary and prepared alumina-containing raw materials in a cascade-gravity classifier was developed. The criteria and factors characterizing the alumina-containing material, as well as influencing and determining the maximum material enrichment, are established."

Direct observation of the charge shape and its motion in industrial mills are not possible, it is then customary to use transparent end, small-scale mills (i.e., model mills) to determine the charge trajectory directly by visualization methods. Because of a short length of the model mills, the end-wall effects could introduce a significant bias on the observed charge trajectories and shape. The shorter the mill, the stronger the bias. This could be due to some material bridging between the end walls. In this research, the end-wall effects were investigated by gradually increasing the model mill length and analysing the charge trajectory and shape variation at a given operating conditions (i.e., ball filling, mill speed, liner type). The unbiased mill length was assumed to be beyond the mill length where no significant change observed in the charge trajectory and shape. For all tests, the torque of the charge was also measured by a torque sensor. The special design of the model mill with the diameter of 100 cm made possible to increase the mill length in steps of 3.6 cm up to 21.6 cm. Four types of liners, five steel ball fillings (10, 15, 20, 25, 30% v/v) and three mill speeds (55, 70, 85% of critical speed) were tested. The ball sizes ranged from 4 to 12 mm. The results indicated that when the mill length was below 10.8 cm the end walls prevented the charge from free falling. This resulted in lower impact point angles and lower power draws compared with the case of no end-wall effects. When the same experiments were performed using an iron ore instead of balls with the same size range, the impact of end-wall effects was more pronounced. For an increase of 30% in the speed (from 55 to 85%), the torque due the change in the charge shape decreased by 41% (from 3.7 to 2.2 kgf.m) when mill filling was 30%. At the same operating conditions when steel balls used the torque decreased only by 19% (from 9 to 7.2 kgf.m). This was expected due to irregular shapes of the ore particles which facilitated bridging. Three-dimensional DEM simulations also resulted in the similar conclusions.

The adsorption of heterocyclic collectors such 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO), 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and their derivatives on pyrite form a basis in understanding the flotation reactivity that may be applicable in a wide range of sulphide minerals. This study uses a computational and experimental approach to determine the heat of adsorption of MBT, MBO, MBI and modified MBT collectors onto pyrite surfaces. Computational calculations found that the adsorption energies were in the order: MBO > MBI > MBT. The heterocyclic collectors were adsorbed in their thiolate form on the surface. In the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the MBT adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur atom, while MBO and MBI adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur and N atoms onto the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted, where the MBT exocyclic sulphur atom bridged on the 5- coordinated Fe and surface 2-coordinated sulphur atoms, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. In the case of MBO and MBI, dissociation of the exocyclic sulphur atom from the collector occurred with subsequent interaction with the surface 5-cordinated Fe and 2-coordinated S atoms. This resulted in the collector carbon atom adsorbing on the surface 2-coordinated S atom, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The adsorption of the modified MBT was found to be more exothermic than the MBT, which showed that introduction of a –CS2 group on the exocyclic sulphur atom improved the affinity of MBT on the surface, and was thus a better flotation collector. The computational results were supported by experimental enthalpy of adsorption measurements and microflotation tests. The chemistry of the heterocyclic thioamides is complicated by the fact that they can exist in a number of tautomeric and ionic forms at different pH’s. This is discussed in relation to the flotation and calorimetric data.

Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) method is applied to select tailings site of the Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Plant in the Kerman province, south-eastern of Iran. To select tailings site, screening is applied on eight location proposed by Binnie and Granges. Consequently three sites identified for further studies. Evaluation factors include only the most important factors such as efficiency ratio, elevation and distance to processing facilities, occurrence of faults and fractures. Crisp values such as efficiency ratio, elevation and distance can be determined by measurements and calculations, but some factors such as occurrence of faults and fractures are presented as linguistic values that can be described with triangular fuzzy numbers. Based on evaluation values obtained an optimal tailings site can be selected using a modified Technique of ranking Preferences by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) given crisp data and linguistic variables as the alternatives of attributes. Each attribute?s weight is assigned using the analytic hierarchy process. The final ranking order aids in the selection of tailings site. Finally, the stages of modified TOPSIS method were applied and site No.2 situated in 5400m to the mill was selected as the best alternative.

Phosphate minerals are conventionally concentrated by flotation process using soap or soap- light diesel oil emulsion as collector. Some plants use detergents such as sodium petroleum sulfonate or alfa olefin sulfonate to enhance efficiency of soap flotation. It is reported that urea a known hydrotrope enhances flotation efficiency of soap as efficiently as alfa olefin sulfonate or linear alkyl benzene sulfonate at bench scale tests. In the present study tri sodium citrate also a known hydrotrope is tested as promoter in the flotation of phosphate mineral from Eshidiya ore.

Lab-scale flotation of copper and cobalt oxidized ore from the Luiswishi deposit in the Katanga province (DRC) has been done focusing on the influence of the degree of process water recycling on metals recovery. Results have shown that at 20 % recycling rate, the recovery of copper and cobalt in the cleaner stage have been respectively reduced to 23 % and 45 % in comparison to 53 % Cu and 63 % Co if process water has not been recycled. At 10 % recycling rate however, the system could still tolerate the effect from recycling, since Cu and Co recovery has remained respectively at acceptable levels of 52 % and 60 %. In order to explain the reasons for the observed worsening of flotation results if process water was recycled at rate higher than 20 %, electrochemical investigation of the pulp has been performed. It has been established that the chemical compounds formed in the pulp when process water was recycled, do influence the sulphidization of malachite and heterogenite and impact further collector adsorption. To confirm these assumptions, the effect from thiosulphate ions presence during the sulphidization of high purity malachite has been studied. It has been found, that thiosulphate ions depending on their concentration in water induce variations in pulp properties such as DO content, pH, Es and contribute to formation of undesirable chemical compounds on mineral surface as identified by DRIFT spectroscopy.
