"This article was undertaken to investigate the effect of nickel and zirconium additions on the strength of 354 aluminum cast alloy. The cast alloys were given a solutionizing treatment followed by artificial aging at 190 ºC for 2 hr. High temperature tensile tests were conducted at various temperatures from 25ºC to 300ºC. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the microstructure of the samples. The results revealed that the intermetallics phases of (Al,Si)3(Zr,Ti), Al3CuNi and Al9NiFe are the main feature in the microstructures of alloys with Zr and Ni additions. The results also indicated that the tensile strength of alloy decreases with an increase in temperature. The combined addition of 0.2 wt% Zr and 0.2 wt% Ni leads to a 30% increase in the tensile properties at 300ºC compared to the base alloy.INTRODUCTIONThe task of improving the mechanical properties in an aluminum alloy at high temperatures should include the knowledge of several factors which are related principally to a decrease in the strength of the metal with increasing temperatures. This behavior is linked to the change or deterioration in the principal metallurgical parameters of the specific cast aluminum alloy during its performance at higher temperatures. Most of applications of Al-Si casting alloys are generally used at temperatures of no more than 230°C (Lee & Chen, 2002). This recommendation is made in view of the fact that, for certain applications such as those required by the automotive industry, these alloys must operate over a wide range of temperatures and stress conditions where temperatures are liable to rise even higher than 230ºC (Robson & Pragnell, 2003).Aluminum-silicon-copper-magnesium alloys such as the 354 alloys show a greater response to heat treatment as a result of the presence of both Mg and Cu. These alloy types display excellent strength and hardness VALUES (although at some sacrifice of ductility and corrosion resistance. These alloys are used for a wide range of applications, such as engine cooling fans, crankcases, high speed rotating parts, structural aerospace components, air compressor pistons, fuel pumps, compressor cases, timing gears, rocker arms, machine parts, and so forth (Cáceres, Svensson, & Taylor, 2003; Rurrxia, Rong-de, Yu-hua, Cherrxi, Xiao-feng, Heng-rong, & H. Zhuang-qi, 2004)."

The Thai Copper Industries smelter (Thai Copper) is located some 200 km southeast of Bangkok near the MapTaPhut deep sea port in one of the industrial centres of Thailand. Although construction of the complex started in the mid 1990s, the smelter, acid plant and refinery were completed in 2004. Thai Copper is a state-of-the-art copper smelter processing imported concentrates with a total yearly capacity of 165,000 tonnes of cathodes. It employs the El Teniente Technology where concentrates are blended and smelted continuously in a primary smelting reactor to produce high grade matte or white metal. The white metal is converted in batches to blister copper in Hoboken siphon converters equipped with Air Liquide Shrouded Injector (ALS I) Technology for sonic injection of oxygen enriched air. Final refining is carried out in two anode furnaces prior to anode casting and electrorefining. Thai Copper and Air Liquide Canada executed a technical assistance agreement in late 2005. Pre-commissioning of the shrouded injectors took place in July and November 2006 while hot commissioning occurred in December 2006. This paper presents the major technical aspects of the joint commissioning, including the establishment of operating practices specific to shrouded injection converting. Preliminary results of this first commercial implementation of ALSI Technology in copper converting are also provided.

"Although lead, zinc, copper, and iron sulphides have been known for many years in the Bathurst region, the existence of large massive deposits was not known until the discovery of the Brunswick orebody in 1952. This was followed by the discoveries of the Anacon orebody in 1953 and the American Metals orebodies in 1954. There is no question as to the great importance of these large massive sulphide deposits, and no doubt that other sulphide deposits are to be found. The problem, of course, is where and how to find them.The discovery of the Brunswick and Anacon orebodies is attributed to geophysical work. The original discovery of the American Metals deposit is generally attributed to a regional airborne electromagnetic survey.It is generally stated that the Bathurst area is a geophysical camp, and this is essentially true, but in this highly competitive search for orebodies it is obviously impossible for an individual company to cover the entire area by a comprehensive geophysical survey. Some means other than geophysics must be used to narrow the target. The quickest, cheapest, and simplest method is geological investigations.It has been stated that nothing can be accomplished by geology in the Bathurst region, since the camp is largely covered with overburden. This is true only insofar as detailed work on certain properties is concerned. It is not true of the larger regional picture. Outcrops are scarce, but angular float is abundant, and precedent shows that angular float has moved but a short distance from its source.GeologyAeromagnetic maps published by the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys are the best guides to the geology and structure of the area. These maps supply factual information concerning the underlying rocks. When coupled with field investigations, they are very useful in the interpretation of regional geology and the selection of favourable areas. The discussion of the geology is accordingly centred upon the aeromagnetic maps. The following is essentially a working theory, based on geological facts as best reconciled with all other available information,"

"The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

"This paper details the process and methodology followed to rehabilitate a rectangular ventilation shaft, situated in the Free State region of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields in South Africa. The shaft consists of seven compartments where self-mining of the sidewalls had taken place and damage to the decayed steel work in the shaft had taken place, thus limiting access down the shaft. The paper will provide some insight into the successes and challenges encountered during the project and may provide some learnings for future projects of a similar nature. INTRODUCTION The ventilation shaft forms part of the Phakisa Mine, situated in the Welkom area of the Free State province of South Africa, and is located in the Southern part of the Witwatersrand Basin, one of the world’s largest known and richest gold deposits (Figure 1).As is typical in South African gold mines situated in the Witwatersrand basin, the shaft is 1 770 metres deep (below collar). The shaft was sunk during the early 1940’s and comprised a rectangular shape with 7 compartments, used for both rock hoisting and men and material winding, respectively, with a single lift “Mary-Anne” compartment. Early in 2003, the mine decided to change the shaft from a downcast hoisting shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft. The conveyances, ropes, winders and headgear (head frame) were removed and replaced with a high volume fan delivering 323m³/s of air at a pressure of 4.2Pa on surface. The up-cast velocity in the shaft was 6.5m/s, however this reduced significantly with the scaling of the shaft and the restrictions at shaft bottom. Although Harmony had converted the shaft from a downcast service shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft some years back, the shaft steel work in the barrel of the shaft was left intact. Over the years, the steelwork in the shaft had decayed (rust and grime) and portions of this steelwork fell down the shaft. Concurrent with the decaying steel work, portions of the shaft lining had collapsed and it was getting progressively worse."

Aerospace and space products depend, probably more than any other products in industry, on advanced materials. While there are many ways of producing aerospace parts, in many cases the process does not allow the design of the metallurgical properties according to the part or product requirements in accordance with its mechanical configuration. Key to the next level of innovative manufacturing is the capability to control the amount of energy applied to the process, as well as the addition of materials in form of vapor or solid particles such as powder in order to build up the metallurgical composition required. With the development of a high speed pulsed laser-electron beam source, the LASTRON(TM) technology, we deliver the basic requirement for a digital manufacturing process of aerospace and space products. This technology, combining Laser and electron beam, finds application in welding, drilling-machining, and is currently modified to allow digital coating (PEB-PVD) methods. In addition to the coating, a powder metallurgical process, called Rapid Manufacturing (RM), will allow the precision melting of parts based on CAD/CAM files. The RM process and the digital coating will allow the production of graded aerospace alloys in parts for jet engines and aero-structures.

With several “green” applications on the horizon, bismuth has become an even more important minor metal in the smelting and refining of lead. Smelters with a complex sulphide feed invariably deal with bismuth. Its behavior during the smelting of lead in conventional sinter-blast furnace operation is discussed. Because it readily deports to the lead phase during the refining of lead, its separation from refined lead remained unsatisfactory in early lead production. When commercial requirements of bismuth in lead became more stringent early this century, the procedure where by calcium and magnesium is used todebismuthise lead was developed. The present conduct of this 1936 process, the Kroll-Betterton process, is discussed with emphasis on operational improvements.

The application of rock bolts for the stabilisation of underground openings needs a good understanding of the response of the bolts during rock excavation. The pull-and-shear performance of two types of rock bolts—that is, the fully encapsulated rebar and the D-Bolt—has been studied both experimentally and numerically. The rock bolts were tested under a pull-and-shear load at five displacing angles (i.e., 0°, 20°, 40°, 60°, and 90°), and at the same time, the strains on the bolts were monitored during testing. The two types of rock bolts have similar loading capacities, while the loading angle has obvious influence on the deformation capacity of the D-Bolt. The ultimate total displacement of the D-Bolt decreases from 140 mm under pure pull loading to 70 mm under shearing. The displacement capacity of the rebar is not significantly influenced by the loading angle but remains at a quite low level from 29 to 53 mm. The D-Bolt yielded in a longer section the rebar bolt under pure shear. A trilinear material model was used to simulate the strain hardening behaviour of the bolt steels in the numerical code FLAC3D. The numerical results show that the axial load in the bolt decreases exponentially with the distance from the loading position for the rebar bolts, but it remains constant in the bolt sections between the anchor positions for the D-Bolts. When the bolt is subjected to a lateral load, shear stresses are created on the D-Bolt surface within a short distance from the loading position.

The need for selective metal separations has increased as the mining industry encounters more complex ore bodies and demand for higher performance end products expands. The Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process uses highly selective SuperLig® resins to remove desired metals from a variety of solutions in the mining and metals processing and recovery industries. MRT separation processes efficiently produce high purity metal products. In this paper, applications of MRT to metal recovery at mg/L to multiple g/L concentration levels are presented and discussed. Specific examples in the precious metal, nickel, cobalt, zinc, copper, and rare earth industries are given.

THIS paper discusses testing and quality control of milled asbestos fibre. It has been composed with the intention of: (I) Summarizing past, present and probable future methods of testing and classifying the various grades of commercial asbestos produced by the Quebec asbestos industry. (2) Acquainting those unfamiliar with the methods used for evaluating, testing and controlling the grading and the quality of Quebec chrysotile asbestos fibres with some of the physical and chemical procedures currently used for that purpose. (3) Discussing some of the complications facing the producers, such as variations in the orebody and special requirements of asbestos manufacturers. ( 4) Detailing some of the present quality control methods. "Rockburst, which often occurs around underground openings in highly stressed hard rocks, is a sudden and violent unstable rock failure and is associated with energy release. Rockburst is very dangerous to workers and mining equipment, and it has been a major concern for deep underground construction and mining. Before excavation, rocks are loaded under a true-triaxial condition. Upon excavation, the rocks at the excavation boundaries are loaded in the maximum principal stress direction and unloaded in the minimum principal stress direction and this provides a necessary condition for unstable rock failure to occur. Understanding rock behavior under true-triaxial unloading condition is critical for developing measures to control unstable rock failure in underground construction.In this article, an explicit FEM tool is used to simulate rock behavior under true-triaxial unloading condition, with a focus on analyzing stable and unstable failure and the released energy during failure. Firstly, a uniaxial compression test was simulated. The results indicated that the adopted numerical tool was able to simulate stable and unstable failure by varying the Loading System Stiffness (LSS). In this research, Loading System Reaction Intensity (LSRI) was proposed as an indicator to identify stable and unstable failure. Secondly, unstable rock failure under true-triaxial unloading condition was simulated. A rock specimen was loaded in three directions; the lateral pressures (s3 and s2) were kept constant and the vertical stress (s1) was increased to a pre-defined stress. The specimen was suddenly unloaded in the minimum principal stress direction (s3) and loading in the s1 direction was continued until failure occurred. Different LSS values were considered and the results showed that the LSS influenced the failure mode; a soft loading system resulted in more violent failure and released more energy than that in a stiff loading system. The influence of specimen height to width ratio on rock failure was also investigated. It was found that failure in taller specimens was more violent than that in shorter specimens. Insights gained from the simulation are useful for better understanding of the influencing factors on the released kinetic energy during unstable rock failure and to find means to control rockburst damage in engineering practice."

"The results being presented in this paper are those obtained during 1996 on a drilling automation project at Stobie mine. This project has successfully demonstrated that the remote operation of multiple drills (by a single driller) from surface using Tamrock Data Solo 1000 Sixty drillrigs is technically feasible and can potentially bring significant rewards in terms of productivity and work environment improvements, as well as labour and maintenance savings. BackgroundThe ObjectiveThis paper is an update of a previous report on remote drilling research at Stobie mine. Enabled by the communications system installed at the mine, the ability to remotely control underground equipment from surface has been demonstrated (Poole et al., 1996). This paper discusses the needs and process required to carry this concept to consolidate the operation of multiple machines under a single operator.The TeamThe team assembled to develop and implement the automation and the communi-cations extensions needed to allow the multiple machines’ operation from the surface by one operator included the following:INCO Mines Research supplied the project management and original project initiative. The primary purpose was to prove the advantages of savings associated with the driller not being required to travel to the underground drill location coupled with the savings associated with one-man, multiple-machine techniques.Tamrock EJC supplied the Data Solo 1000 Sixty drills and the Tamrock specific machine-based custom software. The drills were produced in Finland with no provision for remote operation of the drill from other than the umbilical attached local console.Automated Mining Systems supplied the modifications to the drill communications equipment to allow the machine communications to become broadband compatible. As well, Automated Mining Systems also supplied the hardware necessary to be able to remotely control the portable video camera, as well as the data logging equipment.Stobie Mine personnel were made available to test the function and then integrate the concept of remote control drilling into the Stobie operations."

Gypsum was first exploited as ?a commercial proposition in this province by the Union Mining Company which, in 1900 opened quarries on the east shore of Lake Manitoba, near the present site of Gypsumville. This company established a mill at the head of Portage Bay on the lake, and the manufactured plaster was carried by the companies boats to McArthur's siding on the Whitemouth river near Westbourne, Man., from which point it was distributed. In 1904 a reorganization took place and the Manitoba Gypsum Company Limited bought out the original company, and operated the original mill for about one year when it was destroyed by fire. There were many factors which rendered the operation of a mill at the quarries very difficult; lack of rail transportation for bringing in supplies, and the impossibility of local power development made manufacturing costs very high. Satisfactory distribution could not be affected because of water transportation and poor terminal facilities at McArthur's siding. For these reasons the new mill was built at Winnipeg, where cheaper power and better distributing facilities permitted the industry being placed in a better position. The company continued to bring the gypsum rock by steamer to Totogan, from which point it was transported by rail to Winnipeg. This period was one of steady expansion as the product became better known and more universally accepted as a wall finishing material. Unfortunately, in 1909, this new mill was destroyed by fire, causing a serious set-back to the company, at a time when the steady growth of the western market gave every promise of the industry being placed on a profitable basis.

The 14MW SAG mill at Tarkwa, Ghana, experienced a frozen drop charge incident on 10 February 2010. This caused downtime of 112 hours, a repair cost of $200k and production loss of 162,000 tons, corresponding to a loss of $8.9M. A new locked charge protection system was installed on the two Tarkwa mills on 30 July 2010, mitigating this risk. This system calculates the ore angle in real time while the mill is starting up and trips the mill if the ore angle exceeds a trip angle setting. The calculation of the ore angle is derived from the mill motor rotor currents only - no mechanical transducers are required. The head of Gold Fields West Africa, Peter Turner, says of the new system: "This is excellent work and the type of technology that has had and will continue to have, major opportunity cost impacts on our business."

The rising energy costs and environmental considerations in mining necessitate the development of energy-efficient copper and gold processing plants. This paper presents an analysis of technical strategies aimed at reducing energy consumption in these plants. Key approaches include the integration of advanced ore sorting technologies, High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), Coarse Particle Flotation (CPF), and high-intensity flotation. Ore sorting enables early-stage waste removal, reducing the downstream processing load and associated energy use. HPGR technology, recognized for its energy efficiency, contributes to significant energy savings in comminution circuits by reducing reliance on traditional grinding methods. CPF technology further optimizes flotation performance by enabling the recovery of larger particles, thereby decreasing the need for fine grinding and reducing overall power demand. High-intensity flotation units enhance separation efficiency and mineral recovery in a compact footprint, offering further reductions in energy consumption. Together, these technologies provide energy saving opportunities to achieve a more sustainable and economically viable processing operation. Service-free (Unipass) button-type insert bits are presented as a possible solution to these problems. The paper concludes with an analysis of button bit performance to date.Brief History of Madawaska MinesMadawaska Mines Limited, near Bancroft, Ontario, is in Faraday Township, Hastings County, approximately 100 miles northeast of Toronto and 100 miles west of Ottawa.The mine re-opened in 1976committed to 1,500 tons per day to provide approximately 600,000 pounds of yellowcake (U3O8) per year to A.G.I.P. (an Italian government agency) under the joint ownership of Federal Resources Corporation, Salt Lake City (51%), and Consolidated Canadian Faraday Limited (49%). At present, the mine is producing approximately 2 pounds per ton (.1% U3O8) at the rate of 60,000 pounds per month. The mine employs about 400 employees.Brief Description of Geology, Mining Methods and EquipmentGeologyThe Grenville metasediments of the mine area are chiefly paragneiss, amphobolite and some carbonate (marble) rocks, which were intruded by a basic rock, altered to a metagabbrometadiorite. These formations are generally concordant, striking east to northeast and dipping 45 to 60 degrees to the south. Locally, the metagabbro is often discordant. The above group of rocks (mixed hybrid gneisses) forms the hanging wall of the south-dipping Faraday granite sheet and was intruded by nepheline syenite, syenite and granite. The ore occurs in the granite-syenite-pegmatite dykes that are probably genetically related to the Faraday granite. The ore shoots are erratically distributed within the pegmatite bodies, mainly on the hanging or footwalls but also medially. Their size varies from 50 to 350 feet in length, 5 to 40 feet in width and 50 to 200 feet in height. The ore occurs most frequently in a medium-grained granite or syenite, well hematized with 10 to 30% mafic crystals of pyroxene, amphibole and/or relics of the host rock."

"Hydraulic transportation efficiency and production optimization are considerations in the surface extraction of Athabasca oil sand deposits. To reduce the dependence on haul trucks, it is possible to extend the hydraulic transport system to production faces using a mobile at-face slurry system (AFSS). The flexible arrangement of connected pipelines transports slurried minerals from the mining face to the processing plant. An experimentally verified mathematical model indicates the friction loss of oil sand slurry associated with the AFSS. Laboratory-scale testing enables extended analyses for examining pipeline slurry transport in an oil sands environment.RÉSUMÉ L’optimisation de l’efficacité du transport hydraulique et de la production sont des considérations importantes dans le domaine de l’exploitation à ciel ouvert des gisements de sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca. Afin de réduire la dépendance envers les camions de transport, on envisage d’étendre le système de transport hydraulique aux fronts de taille à l’aide d’un système mobile de transport des matériaux sous forme de boue à partir du front de taille (AFSS, de l’anglais at-face slurry system). L’organisation flexible des conduites reliées permet le transport de minéraux à l’état de boue du front d’exploitation jusqu’à l’usine de traitement. Un modèle mathématique vérifié de manière expérimentale indique la perte de charge par frottement des schlamms provenant du traitement des sables bitumineux associée à l’utilisation de l’AFSS. This paper will focus on developing the mathematical models governing the friction and head losses within the AFSS concept.Background of the problemLarge-capacity shovels and dump trucks are increasingly used for excavation, loading, and hauling in the operation of surface mining. Production cost and efficiency optimization are demanded during the Athabasca oil sands (Alberta, Canada) mining process to secure North America’s energy supply. Increasing haulage distances, rugged terrain, and a constrained mine environment are conditions that will reduce the effectiveness of the shovel-truck haulage system (Frimpong, Szymanski, & Changirwa, 2003). In such conditions, the tire heat index and weight, distance, and time limits for truck haulage can be exceeded, simultaneously creating extreme tire wear and high maintenance costs. In addition to low production cost and equipment effectiveness, a mining environment also requires efficient waste-material recycling and distribution. Waste materials need to be recycled from the processing plant to a new destination such as a tailings dam, or replaced in mined-out areas such as backfill. The Athabasca oil sands configuration and location characteristics result in a mining environment that would benefit from flexible pipelines for constant production and an efficient waste-material recycling process."

During 1955, Cominco commenced an exploration pro-gram in northern New Brunswick; in the following year, what is now the Wedge mine was discovered. The mineralization is mainly pyrite, with associated chalcopyrite and minor amounts of sphalerite and galena. The property was brought into production at 750 tons per day in early 1962. The ore is trucked 10 miles to the Heath Steele concentrator, where a copper concentrate grading about 19.5 per cent is produced and shipped to the Japanese markets through the port of Dalhousie, New Brunswick. Introduction THE Wedge mine, owned by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited (Cominco), is located in the Newcastle-Bathurst area of New Brunswick. It is 42 miles by road northwest of Newcastle and 37 miles southwest of Bathurst (Figure 1). The mine is located on the north side of the Nipisiquit river in one of the more mountainous areas of the Province, the local relief rising to 1,500 feet above sea level. There is an almost complete forest cover of mixed hardwoods and conifers -the val-leys and hillsides being covered by balsam, spruce and pine, the swamps by cedars and black spruce and the highlands by mixed hardwoods.
