The Cassiar orebody is located in a sill-like serpentinite body intrusive into the Devonian-Mississippian sedimentary rocks of northern British Columbia. Subsequent intrusion of the Cassiar batholith formed the McDame synclinorium and produced chrysotile asbestos. Present information indicates an orebody of approximately 16,277,000 tons amenable to open-pit mining, but continued diamond drilling will be needed to accurately define total tonnage and grade. A program has been developed at the mine to provide the required information on a daily basis, and work is continuing on more effective dollar-value prediction methods.

"Coal mining, whether surface or underground, has hazards that make it unique in the field of industrial safety and health. The often soft, faulted and folded sedimentary strata make wall or roof movement a risk to the safe and economic removal of the coal, while the extraction and handling of coal may create an explosion hazard even in surface operations, In Canada, these problems are compounded by the situation of the coal fields which range from deep undersea deposits in Nova Scotia to steeply pitching thick coal seams high in the Rocky Mountains. Climate too can create its own problems, particularly the effect of metals of minus 40°C temperatures, as crumpled dragline booms at prairie strip mines witness. Because of the difficult and sometimes hazardous conditions, Canada's underground colliery managers, in common with those of other Commonwealth coal-producing countries, must have a government ""certificate of competency"" before being appointed as mine managers. Certification of assistant managers (""under-managers"") and foremen (""fire-bosses"") is also a legal requirement for all of Canada's underground collieries, while the province of Alberta requires certification of surface management personnel. Electricians and mechanics who install and maintain the specially designed equipment underground and in hazardous areas of surface mines and processing plants, and mine surveyors who ensure accuracy of the location of underground workings, must also hold government certificates of competency. The requisites for all certification include a minimum work experience and knowledge of coal mining technology and mine safety and health legislation. Despite recognition of the hazards and increasing knowledge of methods of preventing explosions of flammable gas and coal dust in Canada's underground mines, there have been several disastrous explosions such as those at Springhill Colliery in Nova Scotia in 1891 with the loss of 125 lives, at Hillcrest Colliery in Alberta in 1914 with 189 dead, and more recently · explosions and fires in No. 20 and No. 26 Collieries in Cape Breton. Preventing explosions has required developing optimal ventilation techniques, reducing ignition potential, suppressing ignition at source, draining flammable gas before it can enter the air courses, and preventing, or sealing off, autogenous heatings with their associated carbon monoxide or explosion dangers."

Kopar Oy is acknowledged for engineering and manufacturing of robust systems for bulk material handling, especially at power plants and non-ferrous smelters. We have over thirty years of experience with systems specifically designed for hot and abrasive conditions, aiming at low cost of ownership, low operational expenses and high availability. Although Kopar has numerous applications in mechanical conveying, there is an increasing number of pneumatic conveying applications at copper smelters. They relate to conveying of concentrate, and primary and secondary flue dusts. Challenges of pneumatic conveying for concentrate are mechanical and do relate to broad particle size distribution and high abrasivity of the concentrate and the silica. Therefore, special attention shall be paid to system design and ceramically lined bends in the pipeline. Challenges of pneumatic conveying of primary flue dust relate predominantly to material stickiness and poor flowability which are mainly due to fine particle size and formation of sulphates and furthermore, crystalline water. Additional challenges of secondary dust, the white converter dust, are primarily due to the extremely fine 0.1–1.5 µm particle size and problems which come with this. Effect of material characteristics like size distribution, morphology and chemical composition in pneumatic conveying are discussed in detail. INTRODUCTION Fine materials like concentrate, feed mix, flue dusts (from waste heat boiler and electrostatic precipitator) and secondary dusts need to be conveyed at smelters. Both horizontal and vertical conveying and combination of those are used. For the purpose, both mechanical and pneumatic conveying are applied. Most widely used equipment are drag chain conveyors and various combination of pneumatic systems, e.g. air lift, dense-phase and dilute phase pneumatic conveyors. Kopar has 30 years’ experience with multiple material handling systems. Furthermore, acquired companies like Elmomet Oy and SITE Oy (both currently fully merged and integrated into Kopar Oy) have even longer history, especially in pneumatic conveying. It is commonly known that the finer the dust the more difficult it is to be conveyed pneumatically. Sulfates with crystal water makes it all even more difficult, if not ineligible. Challenges related to pneumatic conveying of various fine materials is discussed in detail in the paper.

Synergies between copper and lead extractive metallurgical processes enable the processing of a broad range of polymetallic materials. However, this complexity also brings some challenges expressed in terms of complex intermediates and final products. For instance, based on the limited solubility of Cu and Ni in crude lead bullion additional phases will appear during the crystallization of the melt. Beyond the need for continuous optimization of metallurgy the control of phase solidification is a further important pillar to achieve a more efficient process by minimizing the amount and cycles of reverts. This paper describes the microscopy study of one of the most relevant intermediate in the Cu and Pb metallurgy, the Cu based alloy and highlights the importance of applying a well-controlled cooling sequence to improve the overall process efficiency. INTRODUCTION One of the key aspects in Aurubis’s 2025 vision is to move towards the implementation of a multi metal recovery strategy. The implementation of this new multi metal vision is supported by the long tradition of the company, founded in 1866 as Norddeutsche Affinerie, and further developed by adopting modern copper smelting and lead smelting technologies for the processing of primary and secondary materials. The combination of these assets have already build the basis for processing of complex materials in the copper and lead circuits implemented in Aurubis’s facilities. The addition of a new smelting facility, will enhance these capabilities. Aurubis current flowsheet combines Cu, Pb and Zn metallurgy. This includes primary smelting of copper concentrate, processing of secondaries (residues, slimes, slags) and recycling materials (scrap, shredder material, e-scrap). These broad range of materials contain not only the mentioned base metals but also a number of minor metals that requires to be properly managed to ensure efficient recoveries and quality of the targeted metals.

The effect of alloying elements on the mechanical properties and thermal expansion of 336 casting alloy usually used as piston alloy which has low thermal expansion and very good high-temperature mechanical properties and good wear resistance was investigated. The mechanical properties and thermal expansion characteristic of samples with different combination of alloying elements, which enhance to reduce the cost of products, have been studies, The results show remarkable increase in the mechanical properties with increasing the amount of Cu and Mg, while are reduced with increasing amount of Ni, On the other hand, the use of eutectic aluminum alloy as 336 alloy with higher percent of Cu and Mg and lower percent of Ni are recommended for industry, due to economical viewpoint and satisfactory properties.

In this paper, the differential equations governing the mass transport and the electrochemical reaction in a cathode catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are solved based on the polynomial series expansion method. Explicit expressions for the polarization curve as well as for the distributions of oxygen, current density and overpotential are obtained when a quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomial is employed to approximate the oxygen concentration distribution. These kinds of explicit solutions are desirable for MEA design and diagnosis purposes. The comparison between the conventional numerical approach and the explicit solution approach proposed here shows that satisfactory accuracy can be reached by the first four terms of the polynomial series. The effect of the catalyst layer thickness on the accuracy of the obtained explicit polynomial solutions is also discussed.

Introduction During the past few years, a number of changes in the mine operations at Copper Mountain have taken place. The modernization and mechanization were necessitated and given impetus by wartime and other conditions, which were: (1) The urgent need for copper for wartime purposes. (2) The scarcity of skilled labour for underground work. (3) The increase in labour and supplies cost. (4) The necessity of finding ways and means of increasing the output per man-shift, because of the scarcity of skilled labour and the rising cost of labour. (5) The desire to increase safety measures, reduce the silicosis hazard, and aid mine ventilation. (6) The desire to improve the general working conditions in the mine for all workmen. (7) The desire to reduce the amount of dilution in the ore stream by a more selective yet highly productive method of mining. To this end, mining with diamond drills, and transferring broken ore with slusher hoists, appeared to be the answer to the problem. After considerable discussion and estimation of costs for comparison with those of the operation as carried on at that time, the proposed methods were tried out and, in practice, gave very gratifying results. Reference at this point is made to the paper written by C. H. Brehaut, W. N. Taylor, H. A. Shannon, and R. S. Douglas, which was published in the September, 1945, issue of Mining Technology, by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Inc., and subsequently in commercial mining journals. Since that time some improvements have been made in undercutting an orebody - the first through experiment and practice, the second through making use of the earth's barodynamic or gravitational forces. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss these later developments.

A thermodynamic description of the equilibrium in liquid and gas phases under specific conditions of refractory gold pressure oxidation was generated using the HKF theory. The gold behavior was considered at 190-225°C in the presence of 1-100 mg/L of chloride ion, and under oxidationreduction potential (ORP) of +700 to +1030 mV. The calculations show that the predominant form of gold(I) occurrence is [AuOH]° compared to [AuCl2]?. High ORP favors the formation of [AuCl4]? as a predominant form of gold(III). It is noted that this complex is responsible for the gold losses buildup during POX. Laboratory test results for double refractory concentrate POX are shown. The combined negative effect of (i) organic carbon of the concentrate and (ii) dissolved chlorides in POX slurry on gold recovery is demonstrated. The effects of carbonate blending to the POX feed concentrate and incomplete oxidation of sulfides on POX performance were studied. The pilot tests results of continuous pressure oxidation are also shown and generally confirm the laboratory results and theoretic dependencies. A comparison of the experimental data with the results of thermodynamic calculations is made. As a result of current research, an effective process for POX treatment of carbonaceous sulfide concentrates in the presence of chlorides was developed.

Up to thirty years ago, coal preparation in western Canada, except at four plants, had not included actual coal washing. The exceptions were at Nanaimo and Royston, B.C., where tub washers and wet tables were in use; at Hosmer, B.C., using. Robinson cones; and at Leitch Collieries, Passburg, Alta., using a feldspar jig. The two last named collieries had a short life and were not operating in 1920. The industry was divided, as at the present day, into two sections, steam (bituminous) coal and domestic (largely sub-bituminous) coal, the first generally supplying industrial needs and the second householcl and other heating requirements. The two sections overlap to some small degree today as prepared sizes, chiefly stoker, and briquettes, from steam coal are shipped for house-hold use, and domestic slacks are used in certain industrial plants. The .domestic operator, for reasons shown later, was not primarily concerned with actual coal washing as a phase of coal preparation, and bent his efforts to improvement of screening and loading plants, with hand-picking of coarse sizes. The bituminous operator, on the other hand, felt it necessary by 1920 to consider coal washing. When the mines were comparatively young, coal quality could be controlled to a considerable degree by selective mining, by leaving behind some of the seam or by-passing districts in a mine where the coal was of inferior quality to that in other districts. This obviously had its limitations, and so the next step was coal washing.

"Potash ore is mainly processed using the method of cationic flotation. Potash ore deposits of the CIS, namely: at Upper Kama river, Gremyachinsk (Russia), Starobin (Belarus), Tubegatan (Uzbekistan) are characterized by relatively low KCl impregnation (1.0 – 1.5 mm) and contain up to 10% of waterinsoluble impurities (WII). Water-insoluble impurities are presented by aluminosilicate, silicate, carbonate (calcite, dolomite) minerals and anhydrite. In the process of milling the ore to a flotation size there are released and dispersed the insolubles impurities actively sorbing the cationic collector, i.e. aliphatic amines C16 – C22. In this regard there is carried out a preliminary desliming of the ore.Currently grinding the ore to a flotation size (1.5 mm or less) is carried out in rod mills along with forming of a large number of fine-grained ore fractions having the size under 0.25 mm, which results in the increased KCl losses with halite slime waste and reduction in the quality of finished product. There has been developed the technique for processing of potash ores with a high content of water-insoluble impurities (10 – 12%) containing, in different ratios, silicates, carbonates and anhydrite. The technology involves the use of the ore dry grinding to the flotation size and subsequent reagent activation of the processes for sludge removal and sylvite flotation.INTRODUCTIONCurrently there are being developed the potash ore deposits in the CIS countries, namely: at Upper Kama river and Gremyachinsk deposits (Russian Federation), Starobin deposit (Republic of Belarus) and Tubegatan deposit (Uzbekistan). Potash ores are a mixture of sylvite and halite and contain water-insoluble impurities of silicates, carbonates and anhydrite. The content of water-insoluble impurities (WII) reaches up to 10%, disseminated (impregnated) sylvite does not exceed 1.5 mm and in connection with that the ore is crushed to a particle size under 1.5 mm. Ore grinding is performed by wet process in rod mills with producing a significant amount of fine-grained mineral fractions and sludge, which are actively sorbing a cationic collector, i. e. primary aliphatic amines C16 - C22. The ground ore is deslimed and the slime product is directed to a sludge depot (pits)."

ABSTRACT This paper details the work of RISKGATE, the largest Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety initiative to date. The program is an interactive online risk management system developed to maximize health and safety performance in the coal mining industry by implementing continuous improvement in managing major unwanted events. The comprehensive knowledge base covers tires, collisions, fires, isolation, strata control underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks, and slips/trips/falls. All major Australian coal mining companies contributed topic experts to this broad industry initiative: nine coal mining companies, more than 80 experts, and more than 400 days of individual time for knowledge-capture workshops.

Recycling of spent hydrotreating catalysts (HTC) can potentially contribute towards the sustainable extraction of metal values. Treating such materials by hydrometallurgical methods to separate metals from the leach liquor of either acid/alkali media is a major step. In the present study, separation of molybdenum from HCl leach liquor of spent NiMo type HTC has been investigated by applying solvent extraction using Cyanex-923. For this, the chloride solution containing 973 mg/L Mo, 254 mg/L Ni and 1634 mg/L Al was taken as the aqueous feed. The parameters including contact time, concentration of the extractant, acid and chloride, and phase ratio were varied to investigate their effect on the extraction efficiency. The McCabe-Thiele plot suggests that > 99% Mo-loading using a 2-stage extraction process. From the molybdenum depleted solution, nickel was selectively extracted by Cyanex-301 leaving Al in the raffinate.

As a branch of Operations Research, decision making is a widely used application in both science and social sciences. There are many different methods developed to solve decision making problems in the literature. In this study, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is performed for the selection of reclamation project selection in an open pit mine and the optimal solution of the problem is investigated. Different reclamation project alternatives are prepared for an open pit mine, which continues to its production activities in magnesite sector in Turkey. The data obtained from Magnesite Cooperation is used in the application of the method. A decision-making process is prepared as considering the project alternatives for the purpose of selecting the most suitable reclamation project. The entire criteria that affect the decision-making process are identified and transformed into a hierarchical structure. The problem is solved by using Fuzzy AHP method developed according to this structure. It is found that Fuzzy AHP is a method that may help decision-makers in solving different decision-making problems in mining.

"Mine Gallen is a zinc-rich pyritic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit that occurs in a fault-bounded block of intermediate volcanic rocks. The block is completely surrounded at the present erosion level by the eastern part of the Lac Dufault granodiorite. The volcanic succession includes a massive feldspar porphyry that is probably a subvolcanic intrusion, an andesitic flow unit and lapilli tuffs. The latter are variably sericitized and pyritic, especially in the vicinity of the massive sulphide into which they grade.The ore body is predominantly pyritewith local sphalerite contents as high as 20%; minor chalcopyrite and trace galena are disseminated, but are found mainly along late cleavage. Most ore is a breccia of massive to banded pyrite-sphalerite, veined by massive and complexly banded sulphides. These structures formed by repeated blocky jointing, cracking, sealing, healing and annealing as hydrothermal fluid repeatedly passed through a developing sulphide mound. The deposit is interpreted to have grown on the seafloor in a manner similar to active mounds in the Galapagos rift.RESUME La Mine Gallen exploite un gisement de sulfures massifs volcan géniques comprenant essentiellement de la pyrite riche en zinc. Ce gisement se trouve a /'intérieur d’un bloc de roches volcaniques de caractère dacitique a andésitique, limite par failles et entoure de tout cote par la granodiorite du Lac Dufault. La séquence volcanique comprend des coulées andésitiques et des tufs à lapilli ainsi qu'un porphyre feldspathique massif sub-volcanique. "Important stratabound lead-zinc deposits in southeastern B. C. occur in rocks that range in age from Proterozoic Helikian to Middle Cambrian. The Sullivan deposit, and similar but smaller deposits in the Sullivan area are the only important deposits that occur in clastic rocks with little carbonate content. The highly deformed and metamorphosed Shuswap deposits, of probable Hadrynian to Helikian age, are in mixed marble, calc-silicate gneiss and pelitic schist assemblages, rocks transitional between clastics and carbonates. Deposits in younger rocks, such as the Kootenay Arc deposits in the Lower Cambrian Badshot-Reeves Formation and the Monarch -Kicking Horse deposits in Middle Cambrian dolomite, are hosted by platformal carbonate rocks.An important regional control for the distribution of deposits appears to be a northeast-trending tectonic zone that crosses the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Mountains just south of the Sullivan area, and projects southwestward toward the Salmo camp at the southern end of the Kootenay Arc. Pronounced northeast-trending gravity and magnetic anomalies, basic volcanism of Hadrynian age (the Irene volcanics west of Creston) and a preferred alignment of Mesozoic granitic rocks indicates that the zone coincides with deep crustal structures. Within the zone are dramatic and abrupt thickness and facies changes in Hadrynian Windermere rocks and lower Paleozoic rocks, and on the east side of the Rocky Mountain Trench in Helikian Purcell Supergroup rocks, indicating that block-faulting was active intermittently within the zone from Helikian through to lower Paleozoic time. Right-lateral and reverse movements occurred on northeast-trending tear faults within the zone in Mesozoic time."

Stainless steels such as 316L or 304 are normally relatively resistant to attack by nitric acid. However research at Sherritt International’s Fort Saskatchewan Operation reveals that when the stainless steel is immersed in an aqueous system in which nitric acid is used to dissolve metals such as cobalt or nickel, the steel can be seriously corroded. Sherritt is patenting a simple process for arresting the corrosion via the use of copper. This process is expected to substantially eliminate corrosion in processes where nitric acid is used to dissolve metals attached to a stainless steel substrate.

The present paper deals with vanadium and molybdenum sorption from industrial wastes and intermediate processing products using Cybber macroporous strong- and weak-base anionites. Vanadium and molybdenum recovery by Cybber anion-exchange resins as well as desorption processes were studied in static and dynamic modes; their efficiency was demonstrated for that purpose. The results of the work may be used to design technologies for complex processing of both ores and industrial wastes containing vanadium and molybdenum.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. Membrane filtration systems have regained focus in recent years as an effective means of liquid-liquid separation to increase the concentration of valuable elements, recover reagents or remove impurities. ORANO Mining (formerly AREVA) investigated this cost optimization process opportunity as early as 2011 for implementation at the Trekkopje project (Namibia). The key focus was to separate and recycle bicarbonate from the uranium bearing eluate solution. The performance targets were successfully achieved at lab- and pilot scale with an ultrafiltration and nano-filtration configuration system. Early 2015, ORANO Mining further launched an investigation into the use of membranes for acid recycling at the KATCO In Situ recovery mine in Kazakhstan based on the favorable results from the original bicarbonate application. KATCO is the world leader in ISR uranium mining with an eluate processing capacity of 80 000 m3/yr. This site consists of two processing plants namely, Muyumkum and Tortkuduk, located 40 kilometers apart, both operating under acidic conditions whereas precipitation and packaging are based in Tortkuduk only. This paper serves to present the results from the integration of a nano-filtration system at the Muyumkum satellite processing plant. The project consisted of screening laboratory bench studies conducted at ORANO-CIME followed by process validation at KATCO through further bench and pilot test work. The feasibility study assessments were successfully concluded which led to the implementation at an industrial scale in Muyumkum of a nano-filtration process to reduce eluate volumes being sent to the uranium precipitation section whilst achieving effective separation of uranium from sulfuric acid. Nano-filtration technology has drawn significant attention due to the efficiency and reproducibility of the process and its moderate capital cost relative to operational savings. The reliability of the previous results is a great opportunity to reduce operative expenditures within ORANO’s next ISR mining project in Mongolia.
