Interaction between mattes having various compositions and solutions with a wide range of free acid and non-ferrous metals concentration have been studied in terms of chemistry, mechanism and kinetics. The solution acidity and oxidizers to reducers ratio in the matte-solution-gas phase system have been demonstrated to be the major factors determining the process behaviour. It was found that the types of copper and nickel secondary sulphides resulted from nonferrous metals precipitation from solution, depend on of the solution and initial matte composition. Based on these studies, technologies of matte leaching and nonferrous metal precipitation in the form of rich sulphide concentrates are developed.

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. "The Sigma gold deposit is in a band of deformed metavolcanic rocks that are cut by an irregular mass of porphyritic diorite and by narrow undeformed feldspar porphyry dykes. The gold is in veins consisting mainly of quartz and tourmaline with minor pyrite, carbonate, chlorite, scheelite and free gold. The results presented here concern the structural setting of the ore and are based on a study of the mode of emplacement.Two principal types of veins have been recognized: subvertical and oblique veins. Both types are contemporaneous, mechanically linked and postdate regional deformation. The sub-vertical veins are composed of numerous mineralized lenses that occupy the central part of ductile shear zones of great lateral and vertical extent. Normally, several lenses occur in the same shear zone. The vein material seems to have resulted from incremental filling of openings by repeated vertical movement along rupture planes developed in the central part of the shear zones.The oblique veins are small elliptical lenses of ribboned vein material which formed essentially by progressive vertical opening of oblique fractures. Two types of oblique veins are known: one is restricted to feldspar porphyry dykes, within which they are arranged in an en-echelon fashion; the other is of greater extent and is not restricted to one rock type, but tends, however, to occur in the more competent porphyritic diorite.Vein orientation and mode of formation suggest that both sub-vertical and oblique veins developed during progressive deformation associated with the formation of the ductile shear zones. The latter probably formed in response to a compression that took place late in the tectonic history of the host rocks at Sigma."

It is appropriate to set out a few of the more significant objective of an: accounting system: (1) The provision of historical data <•concerning past events, for the information of shareholders, tax authorities, etc. This data can also be used as a tool to predict the future. (2) The provision of a record to safeguard the company's assets and to form the basis of any claim for insurance or other damages. (3) The provision of an accounting framework in making an economic study of a proposed course of future action such as the development of an orebody or the outlay of a substantial sum for new equipment. "Common properties of commercial geothermal steam reservoirs are a magmatic heat source, the presence of water in vapour and liquid phases, and a surrounding seal of low permeability. The latter may be due to a combination of hydrologic load, argillic alteration and mineral precipitates. The temperature and pressure of vapour and liquid co-existing in equilibrium at maximum enthalpy may approximate 451°F and 450 psi. Steam reservoirs do not necessarily vent steam, but fluid which breaches and mixes with meteoric waters may emerge as hot springs. A systematic exploration program in Western Canada would involve a sequence of four stages utilizing geological, geochemical and geophysical techniques. The geochemical parameters of hot spring waters, such as silica, lithium and potassium content, give some indication of the basic reservoir temperature. The geology of Quaternary volcanics, including reservoir rocks, structure and rock alteration, is of prime importance. The costs of preliminary indirect methods are no more than those of oil and gas exploration; however, high temperatures compound drilling problems and costs. Exploration expenditures of twenty million dollars or so might be needed for a significant discovery. British Columbia and the Yukon Territory contain abundant Cenozoic volcanic rocks and over 50 thermal spring complexes (some with as many as 20 springs in one complex). Six regions are tentatively picked for exploration. Four regions coincide geographically with post-1980 electric power facilities and loads, and with possible alternatives such as potential dam sites. The Lillooet River region, Terrace region and Western Vancouver Island region have inferred potential for the existence of a plus-500-Mw geothermal reservoir. The Kootenay region may or may not have such potential. The Stikine River region has strong evidence of geothermal endowment, but the anticipated power market of the middle future might be only 30-50 Mw. The Whitehorse, Y.T., and Atlin, B.C., region has a belt of thermal springs and Recent cinder cones. The anticipated middle-future needs are real enough, but in absolute terms they are small, say 20-30 Mw. Legislation and policy on geothermal resource rights are lacking in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory at this time. As well as making policy, governmental organizations will play a significant role in geothermal development as buyers of steam or electricity. The role of industry is visualized as assuming the high-cost and high-risk exploration effort, provided the nature of this effort is understood by government."

"The Galore Creek copper deposits are situated in the Stikine River district, 640 miles northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposits are primary cupriferous replacements localized in highly fractured zones lying in altered sedimentary, extrusive and intrusive rocks near the contacts of a potash-rich syenite porphyry complex which forms the core of a structural dome in Upper Triassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Ten deposits are distributed over an area of 3.5 by 2 miles and through an elevation range of 4,000 feet. The deposits share many of the characteristic features common to both the porphyry copper type of mineralization and pyrometasomatic deposits.Primary mineralization includes chalcopyrite and bornite, and is associated principally with pyrite and magnetite. The daminant alteration products are hydrothermal biotite and potash feldspar. Gypsum, anhydrite, garnet, chlorite and carbonate are commonly associated with sulphide minerals. Copper oxides, al-though present, are quantitatively of minor importance. The distribution of certain of the primary minerals reveals hypogene zoning characteristics.The results of stream sediment surveys, and airborne magnetic, ground magnetic and induced polarization surveys show important relationships to geologic structure and mineral deposits."

Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

The injection of CO2 into a reservoir or aquifer can potentially result in deformation, induced fracturing and fault reactivation in the injection zone and/or the rocks that surround it. This paper reviews the data collection and geomechanical analyses performed to assess these potential hazards for the Heartland Area Redwater Project (HARP), in which CO2 sequestration is being considered in a carbonate (Leduc Formation) reef. A three-dimensional mechanical earth model (3D MEM) was developed using available geophysical log data from several wells. The geomechanical response to CO2 injection was studied using a finite element numerical model based on the 3D MEM and pore pressure distributions predicted using a reservoir simulator. The modeling results suggest that the potential for induced fracturing and fault reactivation is low and the maximum predicted ground surface heave is less than 2 cm. Sensitivity analyses conducted with a 2D geomechanical model that was extracted from the 3D model confirm that this conclusion holds true even when a reasonable measure of uncertainty in rock mechanical properties, ambient pore pressures and horizontal stress magnitudes is accounted for.

Over the past twenty years, steelmakers have introduced improved practices for reducing the inclusion content of steels. The success of these practice changes can be monitored in a variety of ways. Chemical analysis of the bulk sulphur and oxygen contents provides a relatively simple means to assess the impact of these changes. However, microscopical test methods are still needed to assess the nature of the inclusions present. Traditional chartbased measurement methods have wide acceptability, and their data are well understood by both purchaser and producer for heat acceptance purposes. However, these methods do have inherent weaknesses which limit their usefulness for quality control, SPC, and database applications. Image analysis-based chart measurements are an improvement over manually generated chart ratings, but the data still do not lend themselves to databases and statistical comparisons. ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography has developed a stereologicallybased image analysis standard test method, E 1245, which provides the necessary data in a form which is easily databased and analyzed statistically. This paper describes E 1245 and shows how data from different heats and melting practices can be compared statistically to ascertain valid test differences.

The development in recent years of a fluidized bed system for use as a counter-current solid ion exchange loading contactor for the purification and concentration of uranium from leach liquors has had a major impact on the design of uranium extraction plants. The main object of this paper is to describe many of the variations that can be applied to the design of uranium extraction plants arising from the use of a fluidized bed loading contactor with a view to providing a guide for the development of a flowsheet for a new uranium extraction plant. The paper has been devoted primarily to the consideration of conventional uranium extraction plants in which a ground ore is leached in mechanically or air agitated tanks. The effect of the use of a fluidized bed loading contactor on each of the plant sections from leach to uranium purification and concentration has been considered. In order to describe most effectively the impact of using a fluidized bed solid ion exchange loading contactor, its use has been compared with the performance that can be achieved with the most common alternative purification processes. The comparisons are made largely on a technical basis, but the effect on the capital and operating costs of the different uranium extraction flowsheets are described qualitatively. In making these comparisons, consideration is given to the effect on the size, number and materials of construction of equipment items and how the quantity and composition of the liquid effluents can be controlled to reduce the environmental problems arising from the disposal of these effluents. The paper also discusses some of the factors that should be taken into consideration in the design of a fluidized bed loading contactor and describes various designs of the elution section that can be used in conjunction with the loading contactor.

Large-scale hydraulic fracturing technique has been widely applied to the development of shale gas reservoirs, where the interaction between natural fractures and critical fracture zones has substantial impact on the propagation of hydraulic fractures. Therefore, it is of significant importance to understand and experimentally verify such mechanism. To reach this end, tri-axial fracturing tests were implemented on 400mm×400mm×400mm block samples collected from Longmaxi shale outcrops. The interplay between hydraulic and natural fractures was investigated during the tests, factoring in the role of pump rate in affecting the created fracture network. Based on the experimental results, the critical fracture zone, defined as the weak formation zone nearby the wellbore created by staged pressure implementation that is observed rapid fracture propagation upon next stage of pressure increase, was thoroughly investigated. The analysis illustrates that given the high brittleness of the shale formation, abundant critical fracture zones are generated around natural fractures with pressure building up at a relatively low pump rate. As the pump rate increases, hydraulic fractures initiate and come into play with critical fracture zones, implying emergence of a large number of micro-cracks. A changing pump rate modifies the way of interaction between hydraulic and natural fractures and the subsequent formation of fracture network. Long term fracturing fluid injection with relatively low pump rate below the activation of critical zones is suggested. Also proposed is appropriate timing when applying a specific pump rate that will contribute to the improvement of hydraulic fracture propagation.

"IntroductionThe Kitsault molybdenum mine is located 600 m above sea level on Lime Creek at the head of the inlet of Alice Arm, 140 km northeast of Prince Rupert, British Columbia (Fig. 1). The area of the mine is characterized by rugged topography and deeply incised creeks which drain into the Portland Canal - Observatory Inlet fjord system. Access is by air service or boat from Prince Rupert, or by secondary road from Terrace.HistoryThe deposit was first staked in 1911, at which time the main feature of interest was a polymetallic vein with values in silver located southeast of the molybdenum deposit (Woodcock and Carter, 1976). Turnbull (1916) was the first to describe the extensive zone of crisscross quartz stringers with Mo~ on the banks of Lime Creek which, although it clearly had the potential to contain a major deposit, was not then believed to be of commercial value.Following sporadic work through the 1920s and early 1930s, the ground lay idle unti11959 when Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. commenced a program of systematic diamond drilling on the stockwork-type mineralization adjacent to Lime Creek. In late 1964, Kennco announced the presence of an orebody of 36 million tonnes averaging 0.230Jo Mo~ which was to be put into production at a rate of 5450 tonnes per day under a new subsidiary, British Columbia Molybdenum Ltd., at a forecasted capital cost of $20 million (revised to $30 million).Between January 1968 and April 1972, 10.4 million kg of molybdenum were produced from 9.3 million tonnes of ore, at an average mill recovery of 90%, and with an average mill head grade of 0.206% Mo~. The ore was mined in an open pit with a waste to ore stip ratio of 1.5 to 1. The. operation was terminated in 1972 due to weak molybdenum prices and escalating costs.In May 1973, the deposit was purchased by Climax Molybdenum Corporation of British Columbia, Limited and in 1979 transferred to affiliate Amax of Canada Limited. In early 1979, following completion of detailed feasibility studies, Arnax commenced construction of the 10 900 tonne per day Kitsault mine and mill complex based on a mineable open pit reserve of 95 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.192% Mo~, sufficient for a mine life of 25 years. The original capital cost estimate was $143 million; it subsequently escalated to approximately $200 million."

THE opinion, based upon geological knowledge, that certain areas within the Province of Nova Scotia might yield commercial quantities of petroleum, is not new. It dates back to at least 1864, when the Pioneer Oil and Salt Company drilled some shallow holes in search of oil near lake Ainslie, Cape Breton. As a matter of fact, several companies were engaged in oil exploratory work near lake Ainslie at about that time; included among them were the Inverness Oil and Mining Company, the Victoria Oil Company, the American Oil Company, and the Cape Breton Oil and Mining Company. Oil exploration by these and other companies was conducted sporadically on Cape Breton island until 1914. In several instances, the depth of the test holes exceeded 1,000 feet; the deepest was carried to 3,260 feet. The Lake Ainslie area was selected because oil seepages were present along certain sections of the lake shore, but the tests that were drilled to tap the oil-bearing zone failed to yield anything of commercial value. Currently, there are three areas in Nova Scotia wherein active exploratory work is being conducted, namely, at Pugsley Siding close to Amherst; at Kennetcook, Hants county; and near Mabou, Inverness county. The Pugsley Siding test is being drilled by the Sun Oil Company, of Philadelphia; the work at Kennetcook is under the direction of the Nova Scotia Oil and Gas Company; two relatively deep holes were drilled by the Lion Oil Refining Company in 1944 near Mabou, and, as a result of the additional geological information derived therefrom, another test probably will be drilled by this Company in the same area. Aside from these activities in the search for petroleum, the oil possibilities of several other sections of the Province are being studied by means of surface geological mapping.

MINE operators are concerned with temperature conditions in their mines, particularly the effects of high temperatures on the l1ealth and efficiency of tl1eir employees. This paper is written to focus attention on the variables of heat transfer between rock and air. It illustrates the difficulties of predicting the manner, and the extent, of heat transfer from theoretical concepts, prior to actual operation of a mine airway. There are ~1any sources of heat in mines. The most important is that of the rock surrounding the airway. This heat, in turn, is a product of the age of the rock, faulting, proximity to recent igneous activity, oxidation of sulphides, hot ground waters, etc. The sources of heat may be constant for any one mine, but they are far from constant when dealing with various mining districts or e1•en with a number of mines in the same district. The flotation separation of salt type calcium minerals is problematic, due to the similarities in their formation properties and the same active Ca2+ related site for interaction with anionic collectors and similar physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, point of zero charge, surface speciation, Ca-site density. The work was performed to achieve effective and selective separation of the calcium-minerals using pure minerals samples: four calcite, two fluorite, and two apatite samples. The effect of pure and mixing anionic collectors such as oleic and linoleic acid to different ratio (2:1; 1:1; 1:2) as well as the role of nonionic collectors on the selective separation of Ca minerals were studied. All flotation tests were performed in self-aspirated flotation cell. The results obtained with the blend of anionic collectors with the molar ratio of 2:1 show a separation between apatite and calcite at pH 5 and a ratio 1:2 at pH 9. The enhancing of separation contrast using the sodium silicate as a depressant for calcite and apatite is also examined as a function of oleate/linoleate ratio. Additionally, this paper discusses the enhancing of the selective separation of Ca minerals when anionic collectors were blended with nonionic reagents. The surface reactions in aqueous mineral suspensions and the adsorption of anionic collectors blended with nonionic reagents were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. An unexpected synergistic effect was observed for some ratios between anionic and nonionic reagents. The mixture of fatty acids and nonionic reagent showed very high flotation efficiency in comparison with fatty acid alone for the flotation of an igneous low-grade phosphate ore.

The Cullaton Lake B-Zone gold mine was the first gold producer in the Kaminak Subprovince of the Canadian Shield . Located approximately 650 km north of Thompson. Manitoba, the mine produced 77,783 ounces of gold and 5,564 ounces of sil ver from 251 ,236 tons of ore during 1981-84 period. The depos it is a small , structurally controlled , stratabound orebody in an Archean iron formation. Most gold occurs in sulphide and silicate fac ies. Based on new ev idence, the depos it is interpreted to have fo rmed by remobilization of syngenetic low-grade gold mineralization in the iron fo rmation in a favoura ble fold structure. The concept and methods developed at the mine have been successfull y applied in the discovery of new deposits in the area. One of the concepts. which link Archean and Proterozoic mineralization. may have wider applications in the search fo r gold deposi ts elsewhere in Canada .
