The history of the lighting of mine workings dates back to the early part of the 18th century, when small candles known as tallow dips, were used. These were set or held in a lump of wet clay. When looking for gas the flame of. the candle was reduced to a mere glimmer by surrounding the wick below the flame with clay. The candle was then very cautiously raised from the floor toward the roof, the observer screening the brighter portion of the flame with his hand and watching for the first appearance of the pale blue cap above the flame, even at that time, known to indicate the presence of gas. When this appeared the candle was lowered quietly and its flame extinguished before attempting to drive out the gas. A very common and dangerous practice adopted at that time was to get rid of the gas by firing it. This was done by a person selected for his nerve rather than for his caution. Dressed in a? suit of dampened sackcloth or leather, this man well termed a "fireman", would lie prone on the floor of the roadway and light the gas above him by raising his candle fastened to the end of a long stick. If he survived, which was not always the case, he would withdraw promptly to fresh air after the flame had passed over him.

"Recycling polymer based end-of-life materials as carbon resources for a partial replacement of coke/coal can make important contributions towards enhancing the environmental sustainability of steelmaking processes. An in-depth high temperature (1550°C) investigation has been carried on waste CDs/DVDs focussed specifically on char generation, characterization and dissolution into molten iron. The simultaneous presence of carbon and oxygen in polymeric chains on polycarbonate substrates resulted in the generation of a significant pore structure and exposed surfaces. Carbon dissolution studies into molten iron were carried out on the raw polymer as well on chars; high levels of carbon pick-up were observed in both cases after 15 minutes of contact at high temperatures. INTRODUCTIONOver the past sixty years, plastics have played an important part of our daily lives and are being increasingly used in all aspects of the global economy. More than 260 million tons of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Their rapid growth and extensive utilization with a short life span (such as packaging) has created a massive waste problem. Although the waste plastic component in municipal solid waste (MSW) amounts to only about 10 %, plastics have a high volume-to-weight ratio and these are generally not biodegradable. In Australia, ~19.20 % of plastics were recycled in 2009-2010 (PACIA, 2010); with the total consumption being estimated at 1,501,258 tonnes, 288,194 tonnes of plastics were recycled. There are serious environmental concerns with the two key waste management options, i.e. land filling and incineration, and there exists an urgent need for developing alternative recycling approaches. In this paper, we focus our attention on recycling waste CDs/DVDs polycarbonate substrates as a carbon resource in steelmaking.CDs/DVDs used for music/data/image are made from aromatic polycarbonate resin (hereafter abbreviated PC). This resin is also widely used as an engineering plastic in applications such as automobiles, mobile phones, notebook type personal computers, cameras & video cameras, electric & electronic appliances, fire equipment, life & living goods, roofing sheets, etc. High consumption and growth (~10% annually) of PC utilization is attributed to its excellent properties such as outstanding impact resistance, transparency, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. Introduction It is generally conceded by flotation men that the condition at the surface of a particle of mineral or gangue is the most important factor controlling its behaviour in a flotation cell. Much research work has been devoted to the study of the forces that are active at the surface of the particle and of the effect of the surrounding solution upon these forces. Study of the relationship between mineral or gangue particles and gas bubbles indicates that, in the main at least, flotation is a physical phenomenon. The important factor, that of mineral-gas-bubble attachment, is unquestionably physical; however, modifications may be effected by chemical means, whereby the nature either of the surface of the particle or of the surrounding solution may be changed. For example, the coating of lead sulphide that forms on lead-carbonate ore particles when sodium sulphide is added greatly aids the flotation of the carbonate particles. Without going into the question as to why, under certain surface conditions, mineral particles will attach themselves to gas bubbles whereas under other conditions they will remain unaffected, it may be stated that there are three general conditions in a flotation pulp which control the attachment of the particle and the gas bubble.

"The influence of Fe, Mn, Cu and Mg alloying additions, Sr modification and grain refinement on the microstructure of as-cast and solution heat-treated Al-10.8% Si alloys was investigated using optical microscopy and EPMA techniques. The results showed that the modification effect of Sr diminished with increasing Cu and Mg additions, due to Sr-Cu-Mg interactions. Strontium caused segregation of AlzCu in areas away from eutectic Si regions, and altered the precipitation sequence of the a-Ah5(Fe,Mn)3Siz iron intermetallic from post-dendritic to pre-dendritic, with the phase observed within the a-Al dendrites. Depending upon the alloy Fe and Mn content, a coarser variation (""sludge"") of the a-Fe phase occurred, in the form of polyhedral shaped particles. The AhCu phase dissolved almost completely during solution heat treatment, while Al5Cu2Mg8Si6, sludge, and a-Aln(Fe,Mn)3Siz phases persisted in all alloys, particularly at high Mg and Fe levels. The f3-Al5(Fe,Mn)Si phase dissolved partially in Sr-modified alloys, the dissolution becoming more pronounced after solution heat treatment."

Many non-metallic minerals and structural materials are produced in Ontario to serve the needs of domestic manufacturers and export markets. In 1982 production was estimated to have a value of $765 million. Approximately 81 per cent of this was represented by structural materials, nearly 12.8 per cent by salt, and the remainder was other industrial minerals. Total mineral production in Ontario in 1982 was estimated at $3 .16 billion, down nearly $1.5 billion from 1980's high of $4.58 billion.

Recent advances in underground communications technology have demonstrated the feasibility of teleoperation and automation in underground metal mines. One major challenge lies in the automation of underground mobile machines from surface, with the potential to reduce significantly the need for human involvement in underground operations. This paper reviews the evolution of underground metal mining automation, principally related to the development of teleoperation and automation of mobile mining machines. Examples of prototype systems are given and the associated benefits that have been observed are reviewed.

Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.

The year 1987 marked the centennial of the beginning of modern hydrometallurgy. On October 19, 1887 British Patent No. 14174 entitled Process of Obtaining Gold and Silver from Ores was issued*. The discovery was made by John Steward MacArthur (Fig. 1), a chemist-metallurgist, supported and assisted by Robert and William Forrest, two brothers practicing medicine in Glasgow. The discovery was made in the basement of their clinic. The process, which became known as the cyanidation process in reference to the alkali cyanide reagent used, immediately received industrial success in New Zealand in 1889 and in South Africa in 1890t. It displaced the chlorination method which had been in use. In 1903 MacArthur was awarded the first Medal of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in London1131 - The cyanidation process was responsible for the doubling of gold production in the world in the two decades which followed its first application (Fig. 2). To the modern metallurgist, it may be surprising to think of MacArthur coming across an obscure reagent such as an alkali cyanide as a leaching agent for gold ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the background and the factors that led to this invention, the development of the understanding of the process, and the application of modern technology.

Proper calibration of portable gammaray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment is essential if they are to be used for accurate quantitative determinations of radioelement concentrations. In the case of both types of equipment, it is necessary to determine the system calibration constants (stripping factors and sensitivities). In the case of borehole logging equipment, it is further necessary to determine the system response characteristics if the data are to be computer processed to improve the accuracy and resolution of the logs. Facilities are now available near Ottawa for the complete calibration of portable gamma-ray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment, in addition to already existing facilities for calibrating airborne gamma-ray spectrometers. Limited additional facilities are also available or planned in several other areas of Canada.

"The Conservative Government 's budget proposals brought forward on December 11, 1979 have been withdrawn, but they are far from dead. On the contrary, a number of those budget proposals, especially the ones which would close loopholes and result in other technical changes being made to the Income Tax Act, should be considered to be alive and well.It is not unreasonable to expect the next government, of whatever political persuasion, to reintroduce many of these technical changes in the next federal budget. For that reason, last December's budget may have offered an interesting preview of what the mining industry and other taxpayers can expect in 1980. It is quite possible that some of these changes may be effective as of the original dates announced in the withdrawn budget proposals.This month, ""Tax Notes"" reviews the main pro visions of Mr. Crosbie's December, 1979 budget, with a primary focus on the changes that would have affected the resource sector.It must be emphasized that all of the budget proposals discussed herein have been withdrawn, that none of them are law and that any actual changes in our tax rules will have to be dealt with by the new Parliament that will be assembled following the February 18 election. The dynamic properties of the KYF-320 flotation machine which is one of the biggest flotation machines in the world were tested and then verified by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Aeration rate testing results suggest that he effect of circulation holes on the fluid state in the flotation cell becomes gradually smaller when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The dispersion degree of air increases with the increasing impeller speed and decreases with the increasing aeration rate, and it increases slightly when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The air holdup increases and then decreases with the increasing impeller speeds and aeration rates, and a maximum value of air holdup is shown at impeller speed of 107 r/min with a value of 12.28%. CFD simulation results are in good agreement with these testing results. Industrial-scale test was carried out using this 320 m3 flotation machine for the flotation of Cu ores. The results show that Cu content increases from 0.06% of crude ore to 1.26% of concentrate, and the S content increases from 0.39% of crude ore to 24.83% of concentrate. Moreover, using this flotation machine 5.88% of power is saved compared to other type of large flotation machine.

"The co-pyrolysis of synthetic polymer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and agricultural wastes (naturally occurring polymer-macadamia nut shell) was investigated in the temperature range 473K to 1273K using a horizontal furnace with an aim to understand their thermal degradation under isothermal conditions. In-depth characterization of pyrolysis residues was carried out using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for carbon structure, and through determination of the concentration of unpaired electrons using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). In previous studies, it has been found that PET thermally decomposes ~ 650K-700K, releasing (~80 wt % of initial weight) gaseous products due to random chain scission. In the case of macadamia nut shell, three types of byproduct can be obtained from pyrolysis: char, tar and gaseous products. In the co-pyrolysis of macadamia nut shell with PET in 50-50 wt% ratio, total product weight ratio could be modified with the addition of PET acting as a hydrogen source. This is because a recombination of thermal cracking products of cellulose could be suppressed by hydrogen from PET, which will later lead to an enhancement of tar formation. In addition, pyrolysis around 673K is sufficient for bond cleavage to occur in cellulose and lignin leading to the formation of negatively charged activated carbon with high surface area, providing bonding sites for volatiles evolving from PET. Therefore the co-pyrolysis may be able to enhance the product yield (tar/char/solid carbon residue) along with a reduction in the release of gaseous products. During the co-pyrolysis, temperature was found to have a significant influence on the kinetics of thermal degradation and solid residual by-products after co-pyrolysis.INTRODUCTIONPlastics are being used worldwide in a wide range of applications in the modern society; their usage has resulted in increasingly a massive waste problem. The production of most synthetic plastics requires hydrocarbons that are produced from petrochemicals derived from fossil oil and natural gas, a non-renewable source (Speight 2011). Currently, plastic manufacture utilizes ~4% of world oil and gas production, and it is expected to drive further increases in petroleum demand by 1-2% due to their large volume of manufacture (Hopewell, Dvorak et al. 2009). Landfilling and incineration of plastic waste are the two main routes to plastic waste management (Encinar and González 2008). In Australia, only 10% of waste plastics were recycled in 2006 (White and Hyde 2011). This means that large amount of fossil fuels from plastics has either been simply burned for energy recovery or buried in the ground. There is an urgent need for developing alternative avenues for recycling waste plastics. Our group at UNSW has carried out extensive research on the recycling of waste polymers as carbon resource in steelmaking including slag foaming and carbon dissolution from waste plastics into liquid steel at 1600°C; the effect of basic plastic characteristics such as chemical composition, structure, bonding network etc. was examined (Sahajwalla, Rahman et al. 2009)"

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributable to accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notes to the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

"The paper identifies two of the main problems encountered in recent hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver: firstly, the plant recovery is lower than anticipated from the testwork; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures cannot be reconciled.The principal reasons for the plant recovery being lower than the testwork are discussed, together with solutions that can minimize these problems both during the design stage and during the plant operation after the problems have manifest themselves.The reasons for the difficulties in metallurgical accounting are analyzed by reviewing the various components of the plant figures. Recommended solutions are given for minimizing this problem and the realities of obtaining accurate figures are discussed.IntroductionThe start-up over the last few years of new hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver has brought to the surface again a number of problems.
