"This paper presents an overview of Alberta Oil Sands Technology Research Authority's in situ oil sands recovery project at its underground test facility near Fort McMurray. It covers the rationale for horizontal wells drilled from tunnels below the oil sands, the tunnel layout, the drilling program, and the recovery process and facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) has constructed an Underground Test Facility (UTF) in the Athabasca oil sands deposit in northern Alberta, approximately 50 km northwest of Fort McMurray (Fig. 1). The facility initially is to serve as an underground laboratory from which to field test new approaches to in situ recovery of the bitumen (oil) in the Athabasca deposit.The UTF employs mine access to get at the effective exploitation of an oil reservoir. It does so, however, under conditions considerably more difficult than those faced by most other applications of the technology. Because of the unconsolidated nature of the McMurray formation, the development of drilling chambers directly in the reservoir would be prohibitively expensive. Further, mobilization of the extremely viscous bitumen requires intensive steam stimulation with the attendant concerns of large, complex well completions and potentially hazardous operations Over-all, the oil sands presents mining, drilling and operations challenges which push the technology to a new state-of-the-art. The UTF as it now exists consists of:• a 20 000 ha lease with all-weather road access;• 925 m of 5 m by 4 m tunnels in the limestone 15 m below the oil sands at roof depth of 178 m below the surface (Fig. 2);• two 3 m diameter steel lined shafts to a depth of 213 m;• administration and sur face mine support facilities from which to operate the UTF (Figs. 3 and 4);• underground piping systems to transport drill fluids, steam, produced fluids and services to and from the future well heads underground (Fig. 5);• surface steam generation and production handling facilities (Figs . 3 and 4).• a drilling rig and auxiliary systems specifically designed to drill long horizontal wells into the oil sands from tunnels in the underlying limestone (Fig. 6);• an experienced staff to engineer and operate the facility (Fig. 7)"

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase

Titanium alloys have found increasingly wide range of applications in aerospace, chemical, medical, sporting, power generation, oil and gas extraction industries mainly due to the low density, high mechanical property characteristics, biocompatibility, and excellent corrosion resistance. In the manufacturing routes of their finished products, welding has been a key technique used and always been a main concern requiring the stringent compliance to the well defined process. Conventionally, gas tungstenarc (TIG), gas metal-arc (MG), plasma arc, and electron beam welding processes have been used to weld titanium alloys. Nowadays, laser beam welding has provided great challenging applications for titanium alloys due to the low and precise heat input, deep and narrow fusion zone, small heataffected zone, low thermal distortion and high productivity. At the NRC Institute for Aerospace Research, some R&D work has been undertaken for titanium alloys using laser beam welding process. These investigations have mainly concentrated on optimizing the welding process as well as understanding the fundamental process-structure-property relationships. In this invited keynote presentation, the research progresses obtained and the main issues encountered in laser welding of titanium alloys will be briefly summarized.

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. When flowsheet development resumed in 2001, the target grade was raised to 20% ni. initially triethylene tetramine and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in a lime circuit, but by recycling process water and the contained thiosalts, the required nickel grade was made without depressants. construction of the mill was fast-tracked, with start-up in september 2005. ramp-up was faster than other recent nickel installations, with tonnage being limited by concentrate dewatering due to higher-thanexpected ore grades.RÉSUMÉ l’usine de traitement de Voisey’s Bay traite un minerai à teneur élevée en pentlandite et chalcopyrite dans une matrice formée surtout de pyrrhotite/troïlite. "The year 1947 was a momentous one in the history of the petroleum industry in Canada. It was in that year that Imperial Oil Limited made its discovery at Leduc, the forerunner of other discoveries, large and small, and the spark wl1ich started a most intensive exploration and development programme there.If, to use boxing parlance, Leduc was the first blow of a one-two combination which left doubting Thomases groggy, then Redwater was the number two blow which achieved the knockout. The oil industry's exploration leaders did about-face without delay and the rush of oil operators of all classifications to western Canada began. It is still continuing, and the influx of capital which the operators have brought in and are bringing in has a bouyant effect upon the over-all economy. The boom is on, but it is a sound one, and it is difficult to conceive that it will have anything but the most beneficial effect on Canada, and particularly western Canada.The petroleum industry is an important segment of the general economy. Its activities call for tremendous amounts of capital; its employees are well paid; it is a large customer for a wide range of products of other industries; its commodities are essential to the citizens and the nation.The industry is carried on by highly aggressive and independent groups and individuals, of which a small minority are integrated while the majority are relatively small operators engaged in only one or two phases of the business. Competition is the rule and, since the nature of the business is mass production, the industry is faced from time to time with serious problems, many of which are peculiar to it."

Pipelines can develop stress corrosion cracks in either intergranular or transgranular form. Since the mid-1980s, numerous colonies of transgranular cracks have been found across Canada and many other countries in the world. While the intergranular form of cracking has been well studied in the past 40 years, the mechanisms governing SCC in near-neutral pH environment, i.e., the transgranular form of the cracking, are yet to be understood in greater depth. Over the past ten years or so, a large number of research publications have been available on this subject and this paper summarize our latest progress in understanding the mechanistic aspect of the problem. Better understanding of the role of mill scale surface and the steel metallurgy in crack initiation has been indicated in the recent literature. However, the initiation of SCC in the lab research still relies on loading conditions that are far more aggressive than those encountered in the field. Most crack growth studies in the past are also performed under very aggressive mechanical conditions, which could have prevented the observation of environment effects. However, more recent research at lower K or Delta K ranges seems to suggest a strong role of the environment. Naturally, modeling of growth should reflect the effect of the environment, steel metallurgy, and the changing mechanical properties of the pipe steel with time. For a specific steel in a given environment, the crack growth rates tended to increase with the strain rate, indicated either by the nominal applied loading frequency or by the calculated crack tip opening rate. Future research needs to address the issue of concurrent growth of multiple interacting cracks. More attention should also be given to concurrent initiation of multiple cracks in a colony, as failure is usually caused by a coalesced crack not by an individual crack. The effect of soil environment should not be limited to the chemistry of soil solution; other factors such as cathodic processes, the variation of environment with time and physical conditions of coatings should also be considered as part of the study.

"Aspects of materials, design and operation of suspension equipment is dealt with, hazard, fatigue and special metallurgical properties of certain steels to resist are described, as is the effect of temperature in service modifying the properties of some steels to resist stress concentration and propagation of cracks.The influence of steady impact and fatigue loading and its results are described. Control of manufacture including nondestructive testing is outlined and acceptance parameters and strength calculations are given. Quality requirements and control in manufacture are outlined. A short description of the overwind detaching hook, together with illustrations of the operation of detachment are presented.MaterialsWinding engine ratings of 8000 h .p. and large capacity shafts 2000 m in depth (4000 m depths have already been reached and it may be necessary to go to 6000 m) and up to ten conveyances are not uncommon today. Loads of 100 or even 200 tons hoisted at low speeds are possible within the near future. Some of these appliances are designed to protect lives and installations in hazardous conditions when, due to human or mechanical fault, a malfunction occurs in the system. In addition, such equipment includes suspension gear of various kinds designed to anchor and apply high mechanical tensions to numerous steel ropes installed in shafts necessary either for the safe passage of conveyances or for balancing purposes when heavy loads are in motion.No unique metallurgical problems are presented in underground mining operations, but they have two special characteristics that influence the metallurgical aspects of the de sign of suspension gear and other equipment concerned in the transport of men and materials. (1) Any uncontrolled release of energy caused by the unexpected failure of a component is more likely to injure personnel and cause costly damage to installations in the narrow confines of an underground mine shaft. (2) Some mechanical equipment in mines, tends to be overloaded in service and suffer plastic distortion."

"Arsenic released from the lithosphere by mining and metallurgical activities is a growing global environmental concern. Dundee sustainable technologies (“DST”) has developed a processing technology to sequester arsenic by means of vitrification. This method can effectively sequester arsenic trioxide without the need to oxidize from As (III) to As (V). Arsenic oxide is incorporated within a silica glass matrix that is stable as per the Toxicity Leaching Characteristic Procedure (“TCLP”) or EPA Method 1311. In this paper, the conventional treatment of arsenopyrite, commonly referred to as “two-stage roasting”, is discussed along with the options traditionally available for the remediation of the arsenic trioxide by-product. The drawbacks limiting the adoption of this processing flowsheet are discussed and a new processing route is presented for the treatment of arsenopyrite. This new flowsheet outputs an auriferous aluminosilicate highly amenable to gold extraction (> 96%) while eliminating the sulfur dioxide production associated with the second-stage roasting of pyrrhotite and ultimately uses vitrification as a definitive sequestration solution to arsenic trioxide.INTRODUCTION Faced with the depletion of conventional gold ores, the gold industry has witnessed a trend towards the exploitation of arsenical deposits. Arsenic is a naturally occurring metalloid often found in mineralogical association with gold. Many northern Canadian regions, from the Northwest Territories to Northern Manitoba, Northern Ontario and the Abitibi region are facing significant arsenic challenges. Projects are deemed uneconomic or prevented from going into operations due to the costs associated with handling arsenic material and there are penalties imposed to complex concentrates by smelters. In addition, Canadian mining operations have left an environmental legacy of gold tailings with grades typically of up to 9 grams per tonne with no processing solution as they also contain significant arsenic contamination at grades of up to 20%. Giant Yellowknife is located 600 air miles north of Edmonton on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. In its 24 years of operation some 7,730,000 tons of ore have been treated to yield $175,000,000 worth of gold.The gold ore occurs at irregular intervals throughout a fold-like sericite schist zone cutting Precambrian rocks. The ore is characterized by 40 to 80% quartz - carbonate and about 10% pyrite and arsenopyrite. Considerable amounts of stibnite and antimony sulpho-salts are also present. Gold is finely divided in the native state existing in complex association with the sulphides. In most instances stibnite is barren but minor values are evident on occasion. Visible native Fold, quite prevalent in the early operating years, is, practically non-existent today. It was readily apparent from mineral dressing investigations conducted in .1944 that Giant ore would be difficult to treat. By 1948 a flow sheet had been established and operations began. In the ensuing years, changing ore characteristics necessitated modifications to some process steps and complete abandonment of others. By 1962 the major metallurgical problems were solved and all that remained was the refining of operating performance to its highest level.With one or two exceptions today's operation follows the practice established by 1962 (Fig. 1 - Flowsheet).

"The Nechalacho rare metal deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is currently being taken through Feasibility Study by Avalon Rare Metals Inc. QEMSCAN analysis and supplementary electron microprobe analysis were utilized to identify and quantify the mineralogy of the deposit, and determine REE distribution among the minerals. QEMSCAN mineralogy was performed to provide textural information on the mineralization, determine the variability of the ore and identify REE domains, and the liberation and association of the REE minerals. The sample matrix consists predominantly of silicate minerals. The REE minerals include allanite, monazite, synchysite, columbite, fergusonite, and bastnaesite. Zircon is present in considerable amounts and is a REE carrier. Fergusonite and zircon account for most of the HREE, and monazite, allanite, synchysite and bastnaesite the LREE. QEMSCAN mineralogical data is extremely valuable in assessing the mineralogy of the ore. The data are implemented to define the mineralogy of the ore body, support metallurgical test work, and predict recoveries and grades.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REE) is used to describe the 15 lanthanide elements or metals and, more recently, the metals yttrium and scandium, which display similar physical and chemical properties.Economic and potentially economic REE deposits form two main groups, a more commonly occurring “light rare earth element” (LREE) group containing lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium and a less commonly occurring “heavy rare earth element” (HREE) group which, in addition to the LREE, contains elevated concentrations of the more valuable REE, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, yttrium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and scandium. The first group is hosted primarily by carbonatites and the second by highly alkaline (Na + K > Al) silicate igneous rocks. The LREE are produced mainly from bastnaesite, monazite, etc., while HREE are produced almost exclusively from low-grade secondary ion adsorption clay deposits in which the REE are adsorbed onto the surfaces of kaolinite and halloysite, clay minerals produced by the weathering of granite and sediments. HREE are also found in fegusonite, zircon, xenotime, etc but are not produced presently from these minerals. China is responsible for 97% of the World’s production of the REE, mainly from the giant Bayan Obo, carbonatite-related deposit and from the clay deposits mentioned above.Quantitative automated mineralogy is increasingly being applied to ore deposits. It helps users to understand and improve mineralogical parameters for geological and metallurgical purposes. Data include textural characterization, to quantification and distribution of ore and gangue minerals, liberation and association of the REE minerals. The data can be used to define mineralogical domains and predict the metallurgical response of the ore (Gunning, de Souza, & Grammatikopoulos, 2009)."

The amount of impurities to be processed in a copper smelting process has increased for recent years because of an increase in the electronic scrap amount. It has been found that Sb and Ni effect on the operation of our copper electrorefining process. It is found that the current efficiency of the copper electrorefining tended to be decreased as the Ni concentration in the electrolyte increased. The passivation of the process seemed to be more related to SO4 concentration in the electrolyte rather than the Ni concentration in it. The current efficiency decreased when the Sb content in the anode was high. A high Sb content in the anode caused easy passivation by forming a gel-like film in the slime layer. We have developed a method to for see the anode passivation in a short time while generating a slime layer. We confirmed the tendency of passivation through the experiment of changing Pb content in anode. Passivation was easily occur with an increase in Pb content in the anode. The amount of slime increased as the Pb content in the anode increased. This suggests that passivation was facilitated because liquid diffusion near the anode was inhibited. INTRODUCTION The amount of impurities to be processed in copper smelting has been growing in recent years because the amount of electronic scrap has increased. Figure 1 shows that the contents of Sb and Ni in copper anodes have increased since 2007.High Sb and Ni contents in the copper anode decreased the current efficiency of the process and made the quality of copper cathode poor because of the anode passivation and the formation of floating slime in the electrolyte during electrorefining. If these influences of impurities are suppressed, it would be possible to make copper electro-refining current density higher and to process much amount of electronic scrap. We examined the components of our copper electro-refining process like anode composition, slime properties and electrolyte composition, and investigated the mechanism by which Sb and Ni affect passivation and current efficiency. The water cyclone washer has a number of advantages that makes it a desirable machine for the cleaning of fine-grained and friable materials such as 1,4 x 0" slack coals. In this paper results are presented of tests carried out on a shaly coal containing a high percentage of inter-grown materials from the Minto area, New Brunswick. The tests were con-ducted in the pilot plant of the Western Regional Laboratory in Edmonton. The test results show that the cleaning characteristics of this coal can be improved by lightly grinding the recirculating middlings fraction, which constitutes approximately 30 per cent (1.45-2.00 fraction) of the raw feed. • The cleaning of 1;4 x 0" fines by water cyclones compares favourably with other coal cleaning machines and has an added advantage of being extremely simple to operate, low in capital and operating cost, and high in capacity. "The McClean uranium deposits are located 11 km west northwest of the Rabbit Lake Mine. Their average grade is 1.8 % U3O8 , and they contain 6. 350 tonnes of uranium oxide in seven pods of variable grade and mineral assemblage. They are hosted by both basal Athabasca Group and the regolith developed on the underlying crystalline basement. The major mineral facies are: sulphide, arsenide, 'bleached', and hematite, with the important uranium minerals being coffinite, uraninite and pitchblende. Abundances of carbon and sulphur isotopes are consistent with their derivation from pyritic graphite in basement gneisses. Isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen suggest equilibration at temperatures of about 200°C. Ar39/ Ar40 age determination of illite associated with ore suggest mineralization began about 1300 m.y. ago and that significant alteration had ceased by about 1170 m.y. ago though Pb/ U data suggest the deposits continued to evolve into the Mesozoic.IntroductionThe McClean deposits lie on the eastern side of the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan where they are part of a cluster of uranium deposits lying west of Wollaston Lake (Fig. 1). The general stratigraphy is schematically portrayed in Figure 2 which emphasizes that mineralization is hosted by both the Athabasca Group and the underlying regolith and also that the deposits are preserved at depth and have not suffered from preand post-Pleistocene weathering and erosion. This circumstance, combined with their simple shape and the presence of seven separate zones of mineralization (pods) allows a description, based on over 450 fully cored drill holes, to be made of the wide variation in chemistry, grade, alteration patterns and position relative to the sub-Athabasca Group unconformity. Ar39 / Ar40 age determinations have been made of illites associated with regolith, Athabasca Group and mineralization and studies are in progress on C, S, 0 and H isotopes of mineralized material and host rocks. Only some of these data have been published; Brummer et al., (1981); Golightly et al., (1982); Bray et al., (1982); and Saracoglu et al., (1983). The only other published data on McClean geology are by Tremblay (1982, 1983)."

An account is given of the developments brought about in the last fifteen years by metallurgical research in the field of heat treatment of steels. The practical aspects of these developments are especially emphasized. Methods of representation of the phase-change during austenitizing and sub-critical transformation of austenite are described and the importance of time-temperature-transformation charts for the planning of heat treatment cycles is shown. Special copies such as retained austenite and internal stresses developed on quenching are also discussed in some detail. Due to the interest shown currently in these problems, it has been thought advisable to describe briefly the underlying principles and present some of the results already available.

Since the discovery by conventional prospecting of the Horne deposit in 1920, the Noranda area has produced 82 million tons of copper-zinc-gold-silver ore from sixteen massive sulphide bodies. Recent exploration in the area has consisted of systematic studies employing geology, geophysics and geochemistry. Due to the depth of the deposits being sought, surface geo-physical surveys are limited in their effectiveness as DIRECT indicators. However, because of the geological environment, surface geophysical methods, and the Induced Polarization method in particular, can be success-fully employed as INDIRECT indicators of ore deposits. Examples of survey results from various properties in the Noranda area illustrate the advantages and limitations of the Induced Polarization method as an exploration tool in this area.

"The Gregg River project is located 40 kilometres southwest of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and east of Jasper National Park. This metallurgical coal mine has been developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary company of Mana/ta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truckshovel open-pit operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. Mining operations started in October 1982 with plant start-up following in April 1983. Introduction This paper is an overview and update of the Gregg River project, a metallurgical coal mine being developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. The Gregg River Coal leases cover 3440 hectares and are located 40 kilometres south of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and north of Cardinal River Coal Mine (Fig. 1). This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truck-shovel operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. A total of 31.5 million tonnes of clean metallurgical coal will be sold to the Japanese over a fifteen-year term. At present, mining operations are ahead of schedule and the plant started up on schedule in April 1983. Access and Climate An all-weather road, Highway 40, connects the minesite with Hinton (the nearest commercial centre) and a Canadian National Railway (C.N.R.) spur line connects the minesite with the C.N.R. main line in Edson. Hinton is accessible by road chartered airline and rail. ' ~h~ rug~ed and varied topography in the area creates large vanations m temperature and precipitation over short distances. The region is characterized by precipitation throughout the year long cold winters and short cool summers. The mean temperatur~ of the area range from a low of -14°C in January, the coldest month, to a high of 12°C in July, the warmest month. Long-term precipitation data indicates a mean yearly precipitation of 870 mm of which 620Jo occurs during the summer months."

An integrated pilot plant for the development of the S-C Copper Process was constructed at Fort Saskatchewan in 1975 and operated in 1976. The pilot plant was designed to treat 9 tonnes per day of a pyritic copper concentrate. A demonstration run conducted during the last quarter of 1976 averaged 90% on-stream time, and confirmed that the process is operable as a stable and integrated unit. The paper describes the parameters and equipment developed for thermal activation of chalcopyrite copper concentrates to make them amenable for the dissolution of iron and zinc, and their subsequent separation and recovery. The resulting high-grade copper sulphide was leached with return electrolyte and oxygen to extract 98.5% of the copper into solution. The copper was electrowon at 650 amps per square metre from purified solution, to produce cathodes analyzing 0.1 ppm Se, 0.1 ppm Bi, 4 ppm Pb and 10 ppm S. The electrical conductivity was >101% lACS and the spring elongation value [ ]350 mm. Elemental sulphur and gangue are removed from leach residues to make a concentrate containing over 95% of the silver and gold and most of the unleached copper. Conventional construction materials such as stainless steel, titanium, Hastelloy, acid brick, rubber and plastics performed well. The containment inherent in hydrometallurgy provided high standards of hygiene and safety.

The machining of thin wall parts, often used in the aeronautical industry still creates a number of problems, including panel deformation. Quality and productivity are often affected. This study seeks to determine the optimal conditions for cutting in order to guarantee a competitive fabrication of parts while still maintaining quality and delivery deadlines. The studied model (Spar) is a typical structural part used in the assembly of airplane wings. The main objective of this study was to improve two performance aspects: surface quality finish (quality criteria) and the rate of cutting by stock removal (economic criteria). To achieve this objective, we used an evaluation process of the geometrical error issuing from the machine-tool. We also determined the stability zones of the machine-tool's dynamic system. Finally, a series of high-speed machining tests (finishing cuts) were conducted using an experimental structured approach (16 000 - 24 000 rpm). Profile measures of surface roughness and cycle times registered during trials allowed us to establish optimal cutting conditions. Surface roughness improved as well as cutting by stock removal. Four parameters were taken into consideration: axial depth of cut, chip load, spindle speed, and cutting fluid. Finally, the influence of the type of cutting fluid was evaluated to show that it did not significantly affect machining results.

In copper ore mines located in the Pre-Sudeten Monocline the deposit mining using room and pillar systems has been carried out for more than forty years. When implementing mining systems in deep copper ore mines it appeared to be necessary to adapt them to variable geological conditions and natural hazards. In the initial period of exploitation there were mainly caving and rockburst hazards. The adaptation of room and pillar system was connected with a state of knowledge in the scope of identifying, forecasting and controlling rock mass hazards. The new solutions allowed the safe and efficient exploitation of a blanket deposit of variable thickness from about 2 to 15m, seated on progressively increasing depth. They included exploitation in constrained conditions, such as in protective pillars. In the exploitation period, technical and organisational activities aimed at rockburst hazard control were introduced including active methods for controlling rockburst hazard and procedures for conducting mining works in the rockburst hazard conditions. When mining at a depth exceeding 1,200 m, the exploitation method and technique are additionally affected by thermal hazard and by gas and rock breakout hazard. New solutions of the room and pillar system and a longwall system with mechanical mining have been developed for exploitation in the associated hazard conditions. The require application of many innovative solutions in the scope of mining process and ore haulage mechanisation, excavation support and forecasting and control of existing hazards. The main purpose of these solutions is to conduct the safe and economically effective exploitation of the deposit.
