Flotation works very well for particles that are typically in the range 20 to 150 µmin diameter, for base metal ores. In this range, it is possible to get quite high recoveries in conventional flotation machines. Outside this range, the recoveries decline progressively, whether it be with the very fine or the coarse end of the size spectrum. In this paper, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery are briefly reviewed, together with strategies for future work. Recent progress in the author's laboratory will be described. These include the Concorde Cell, which takes advantage of the high dissipation rates in the shock wave created when a gas-liquid mixture reaches supersonic velocities. The environment thus created is very beneficial for the flotation of ultrafines. For coarse particles, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery can be related to the highly turbulent nature of the pulp in a conventional flotation cell. To improve recovery, it is necessary to find a way of bringing particles and bubbles into contact in a quiescent environment. A new process for coarse particle flotation will be described, in which a fluidized bed is created in the flotation cell. The flow conditions are very gentle, and the high solids concentration leads to rapid rates of capture of the particles. Experimental results are presented. INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

"In the changing global market scenario for raw materials for the steel industry, a number of novel iron- and steelmaking process technologies are being developed to provide the steel companies with economically-sustainable alternatives for iron- and steel-making. In addition, the steel industry is also focusing on reduction of energy consumption as well as green-house gas (GHG) emissions to address the crucial subject of climate change. In this context, it is important to assess these critical issues for the alternate iron- and steelmaking technologies that have been developed. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of energy-efficiency and GHG emissions for some selected iron- and steelmaking technologies that are being considered for implementation. In this work, Hatch’s G-CAP™ and En-MAP™ tools that were developed with the main objective of quantifying and qualifying the potential energy savings and CO2 abatement within the iron and steel industry, were employed in the evaluation conducted. INTRODUCTIONThe iron and steel industry continues to transform itself and evolve in the ever-changing global market place – the raw material scenario is constantly changing with respect to quality and quantity (availability), there is stiff competition in both global and local markets, and there is increasing pressure to address global climate change issues, especially since the steel industry is highly energy- and carbonintensive. There is growing importance of steel production in developing countries such as China and India – this means that the steel industry in these countries will play an important role in defining and shaping the future of the industry.Climate change is expected to present new risks to the steel industry with respect to ensuring a sustainable business. Legislators are proposing to limit GHG emission by placing an implicit price on CO2 emission - market-based “cap and trade”, carbon tax etc.. In this scenario, it is important for the steel companies to reduce exposure to climate-related risks and at the same time, find business opportunities within these risks. Thus, there is a need to strategically manage the climate change risks; the key steps to strategically manage climate change risks are presented in Table 1[1]."

"Abstract - This is the first reported occurrence of an active hydrothermal field in an oceanic fracture zone setting. The hydrothermal field occurs in a pull-apart basin within the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which has four distinct mineral deposit types: (1) barite mounds and chimneys, (2) barite stockwork breccia, (3) silica-barite beds, and (4) silica, barite, and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide in sediments. All deposit types contain minor amounts of sulfides. In barite stockwork, silica-barite beds, and mineralized sediment, Ba, Pb, Ag, S, Au, Zn, Cu, Hg, Tl, As, Mo, Sb, U, Cd, and Cu are enriched relative to unmineralized rocks and sediments of the BFZ. Fe and Mn are not enriched in the barite stockwork or silica-barite beds, but along with P, Co, and Mg are enriched in the mineralized sediments. Silver contents in deposits of the hydrothermal field range up to 86 ppm, gold to 0.7 ppm, zinc to 3.2%, copper to 0.8%, and barium to 22%.Mineralization occurred by diffuse, low to intermediate temperature (mostly <250°C) discharge of hydrothermal fluids through pillow lavas and ponds of mixed volcaniclastic and biosiliceous sediments. Bacterial mats were mineralized by silica, barite, and minor Fe hydroxides, or less commonly, by Mn oxyhydroxides. Pervasive mineralization of bacterial mats resulted in formation of silica- barite beds. Silica precipitated from hydrothermal fluids by conductive cooling and mixing with seawater. Sulfate, U, and rare earth elements (REEs) in barite were derived from seawater, whereas the REE content of hydrothermal silica deposits and mineralized sediments is associated with the aluminosilicate detrital fraction. Fe-, Zn-, Cu-, Pb-, and Hg-sulfide minerals, Ba in barite, and Eu in all mineralized deposits were derived from hydrothermal fluids. Manganese oxides and associated elements (Co, Sb, Mo, W, Cl, and Cu) and Fe oxides and associated elements (Be, B, P, and Mo) precipitated as the result of mixing of hydrothermal fluids with seawater."

A paper describing the Noranda smelter was presented at the 1930 annual meeting of the Institute (1). A lacer article appeared in the Trans-actions of the A.I.M.&M.E. in 1933. Since that time there have been many changes and improvements in plant operation and it is the abject of this paper to give an account of developments up to the beginning of 1939. The Noranda smelter was built originally for a capacity of 30,000 tons a month. At present, the average tonnage being treated is 110,000 tons a month, the tonnage of custom ores alone amounting to almost the total rated capacity of the original plant. This increase has been accomplished by increasing the capacity of the reverberatory furnaces from 700 tons of solid charge per furnace day in 1928 to 1,500 tons per day at the present time. In 1935, it appeared chat the limit of furnace capacity had been reached at about 1,300 tons of charge per day because of the short life of the sprung silica arches. However, the adoption of the suspended magnesite roof, which had been developed at the Flin Flou smelter of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, overcame this difficulty and it is believed that the limit of the capacity of the present reverberarory furnaces has not been reached. A brief account of the changes to equipment in the various departments will be given, followed by a description of the more important features of present smelter practice.

"The Gakara Rare Earth deposit in Burundi (East Africa) is unique for its high grade (e.g., 54.3% TREO on average) and low uranium and thorium levels. The majority of the light rare earth (RE) elements in material from Gakara are contained within the familiar RE minerals bastnaesite and monazite. Extensive metallurgical test work was conducted by SGS Minerals Services on mineral samples collected from the Gakara deposit. Various whole ore hydrometallurgical processing routes were examined in a scoping level test program. Preliminary beneficiation testing was also conducted, though it was determined that only marginal upgrading would be achieved with significant RE losses. Thus a hydrometallurgical process on whole ore was developed to minimize the overall process complexity and achieve maximum RE recovery. Results from the test work will be presented, along with the selected base case flowsheet involving agitated atmospheric sulphation of the RE minerals, RE double sulphate precipitation, caustic conversion, redissolution, and carbonate precipitation. Following the base case flowsheet, a purified cerium free mixed RE carbonate with low levels of radioactive elements was produced.INTRODUCTIONRainbow Rare Earths Limited (Rainbow) is a mining company engaged in the exploration and development of the Gakara rare earth deposit in Burundi; Figure 1 shows the project location. The project is located in the Bujumbura Province and 45 km from the Burundi capital of Bujumbura. Notable for its exceedingly high in-situ grade – 54.3% on average total rare earth oxide (TREO), low uranium and thorium levels and familiar rare earth minerals, bastnaesite and monazite – Gakara is the world’s richest rare earth deposit. The project, a previously operating mine from 1948–1978, has a significant mineral inventory base, a long life of mine, well understood mineralogy, and robust economics. Rainbow is focused on bringing Gakara into production in the near term, ramping up to produce 5,000 t/y of a 54%+ TREO concentrate."

ALTHOUGH cylindrical grinding mills have long been used, there is wide divergence of opinion as to what constitute best operating conditions. Questions such as mill diameter, diameter-length ratio, revolutions per minute, type and size of grinding media, volume of charge, circulating load, pulp level, pulp consistency, liner design, and size of feed, have all been given serious consideration by competent scientific investigators as well as by operators. While many laboratory and plant tests have been made that would seem to justify certain definite conclusions, there is a dearth of definite data giving actual results obtained when a grinding mill working between fixed limits is operated at its maximum capacity under varying conditions as to ball load, circulating load, speed, etc. In tests conducted recently at the Hollinger, extending over a period of thirteen months, to determine the best operating conditions for a ball-mill 6 ft. 6 in. diameter inside the liners, some very interesting facts have been ascertained. This paper is presented in the desire to make public the results of these tests and not with the idea that the last word has been spoken in regard to grinding. We feel, however, that these facts justify certain definite conclusions and hope that, by the fullest and frankest criticism and discussion, the essentials necessary for the correct design and operation of grinding mills will become better known.

The influence of niobium addition and very low temperature (`cool&apos;) deformation on the microstructure and properties of low carbon microalloyed steels was investigated. In this work, the specimens were heated at 1200°C and held at this temperature for 20 minutes. Some specimens were aged at 400°C for times ranging from 10 minutes to 10 hours followed by air-cooling. Others were subjected to deformation at 400°C (`cool deformation&apos;) prior to aging. It was observed that the proportion of acicular ferrite was increased as the amount of Nb was increased. It was found that cool deformation increased both yield and tensile strengths significantly compared to that of the aged only specimens.

"Large deposits of sodium sulphate exist in southern Saskatchewan in the brines or muddy crystal beds of alkali Jakes. Currently, more than 300,000 tons per year of sodium sulphate are produced from these lakes and sold as salt cake to the paper industry. Most of the production is obtained from the brines of a limited number of Jakes.The Saskatchewan Research Council was requested to develop a process for recovering sodium sulphate from the muddy crystal beds so that this type of deposit could be exploited in the future. A flowsheet was developed with the aid of phase diagram data and the process was studied on a pilot-plant scale using raw material from three different lakes. Satisfactory yields and product purities were obtained in all cases, and an economic analysis indicated that a 100,000-ton-per-year sodium sulphate plant could produce salt cake at a cost of $12.26 per ton for a rate of return upon investment of 16 per cent at current market prices."

"IntroductionThis paper presents an overview of the industry status, describes current potash industry practices at three mills, and summarizes developments that have taken place since the previous review by Banks (1985).The commodity potash is produced in both New Brunswick and Saskatchewan from the evaporite ore sylvinite. This ore is a mixture of co-crystallized halite, NaCl, and sylvite, KCl, and a minor assortment of silica, carbonate, sulphate, and clay minerals. Carnallite, KMgCl3.6H20, is also dispersed throughout the bedded deposits and can affect the recovery of sylvite for fertilizer and industrial uses.Canada continues to be a principal source of supply of agricultural and industrial potash products. Figure 1 shows the sector performance between 1989 and 1997 in the context of the world supply and demand situation as reported by Prud'homme (1997) of Natural Resources Canada.Potash industry output is traditionally measured as the quantity of potassium nutrient and reported as tonnes ofK20. Mineralogically, the principal form of potash produced in Canada is sylvite, KCl, and 1 nutrient tonne K20 corresponds to approximately 1.64 tonnes of sylvite of agricultural grade, about 95% KCI. In 1997, the Canadian industry milling capacity was 13.4 million metric tons (Mt) ofK20 (22 Mt KCl) while the actual production was 9.0 Mt K20 (14.8 Mt KCl). Worldwide milling capacity in 1997 was 35.9 Mt K20 (58.8 Mt KCl) and global consumption was 25.3 Mt K20 (41.6 Mt KCl). Canadian producers can deliver about 35% of the global demand for potash commodities"

This is the first in a series of Coal Technology Reviews being prepared in accordance with a recommendation voted by the Coal Division in session at the Jubilee Meeting, Vancouver, April, 1948, that the Department of Mines and Resources be requested to arrange for publication by the proper Government authority of a Quarterly Review&apos; of Coal Technology, for distribution among those concerned in the production and use of coal in Canada. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed both by the Council of the Institute and by the Dominion Coal Board. Further reviews (or digests) will appear at intervals in the Bulletin, or will be published and distributed by the Board which, meanwhile, has undertaken to distribute reprints of Mr. Ignatieff&apos;s review.-En. * * * The fields in coal mining technology which are considered to demand most attention and study at the present time are reviewed under the headings appearing below. Mechanization In the light of the growing shortage of skilled miners and the necessity of mitigating constantly increasing mining costs, interest continues to centre in mining methods and applications of mechanization chat will produce the maximum reduction of man power. The growth of strip or open-cut mining, also, is a consequence of this trend. Mechanization at the face attracts most attention and the trend is toward developing and adopting machines capable of cutting and loading the coal in one operation instead of having the separate operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading. In Great Britain, where longwall mining is? the general practice, the A.B. Meco-Moore machine still receives much attention, and accounts describing its performance over reasonably long periods have appeared in the technical press.

"In 2005, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) commissioned a new silver electrorefining circuit. This circuit was intended to operate with a minimal electrolyte bleed for the control of copper. However, by the time of start-up, the levels of copper-rich silver doré to electrorefining had increased, and despite partial pyro-conversion in a small Top Blown Rotary Converter (TBRC), copper concentration in the silver anode still averaged 7.5%. This necessitated frequent replenishment of the electrolyte with fresh silver nitrate since copper displaced dissolved silver during electrolysis, and therefore requiring a robust copper bleed treatment step in order to maintain cathode silver flake purity at 99.99%. The originally-installed bleed treatment system could not meet the RCM’s needs. A thorough review of known technologies, however, did not indicate one capable of handling the copper load, and resulted, therefore, in the development of a novel copper hydrolysis approach for removal of copper as an insoluble basic nitrate salt, and recovery of the associated nitric acid for re-use in the circuit. Laboratory-scale trials showed reproducible results, and existing equipment was subsequently modified.INTRODUCTIONIn 2005, the introduction of a new silver electrorefining circuit at the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) initiated changes in the way customer silver, collected from the gold doré circuit, was processed. These circuit changes were discussed in a recent paper (Aprahamian, 2015). A wastewater treatment plant had not been budgeted at the time, and this represented a significant constraint when considering the introduction of a wet processing circuit. After a review of various options, a turnkey silver electrorefining circuit was purchased from a European firm. Initially, enough cells were ordered to produce 2 million oz of fine silver (999), with the option to increase to 5 million oz. The selected equipment was based on a Moebius cell design combined with a silver grain pressure dissolver to produce make-up silver nitrate solution. Additionally, an evaporator/hydrolysis unit included in the package appealed to the Mint Refinery, on the basis that it offered a simple way to bleed dissolved copper in electrolyte without generating effluent."

"Uranium occurrences are widely distributed in tuffaceous-argillaceous beds and abundant rhyolitic volcanic rocks of the upper Aillik group, which is more than 3 km thick and over 125 km by 40 km in areal extent. They include partially developed Kitts and Michelin deposits, containing 1560 and 7366 t U respectively.Uranium occurs mainly as disseminated fine pitchblende grains in beds and lenticular stratabound zones, and rarely as coarse pitchblende aggregates and thin veinlets. The Kitts deposit and ten other occurrences are in the argillaceous-tuffaceous beds within a steeply dipping stratigraphic zone, less than 50 m thick and over 20 km long, at the base of the upper Aillik group. The occurrences hosted by the rhyolitic rocks, numbering over fifty and including the Michelin deposit, are in elongate structural-stratigraphic belts or zones, and are characterized by a pronounced enrichment of soda and depletion of potash associated with mineralization. The mineralized zones are affected to a varying degree by Hudsonian deformation, metamorphism and granitic intrusions.The uranium mineralization is interpreted as genetically related to the felsic volcanism, involving syngenetic deposition in argillaceous-tuffaceous beds and epigenetic emplacement in rhyolites. The volcanic activity occurred 1855 ± 5 Ma ago according to a preliminary U-Pb zircon date on porphyritic rhyolite. Pitchblendesfrom the Kitts and Michelin deposits and a few other occurrences in rhyolites have yielded nearly concordant dates in 1810 to 1730 Ma range. They reflect resetting of isotopic equilibrium at the time of Hudsonian deformation. Other isotopic data on pitchblendes and galena from veins and aggregates .in the south near the 'Grenville Front' indicate local redistribution of uranium and radiogenic lead at the time of Grenville Orogeny approximately 1100 Ma ago."

"This study focuses on comparing the “blinding” effectiveness of various organic additives as part of a general review of using organic additives to mitigate preg-robbing and improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores. The laboratory results compared the impact of various organic additives on the prevention of gold adsorption using both activated carbon and ore samples containing carbonaceous matter, generally referred to as total carbonaceous matter (TCM). Although several organic reagents were found to have a significant blinding effect on activated carbon, these results did not translate into increased gold leaching efficiencies with actual ore samples.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing refractory ores, which contain carbonaceous matter, have been problematic in cyanide plants for many years. In industry, preg-robbing by carbonaceous matter may be mitigated using various techniques including flotation, to remove the carbonaceous matter; addition of blinding agents, to passivate the carbon surface and prevent adsorption of gold cyanide complex; roasting, to partially or fully destroy the carbonaceous matter; chemical oxidation (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986); pressure oxidation; or microbial deactivation (Dunne, Staunton, & Afewu, 2013). Carbon-in-Leach and Resin-in-Leach are also used as process alternatives in which activated carbon or resins are used to compete with the carbonaceous matter for gold cyanide adsorption. For highly preg-robbing ores, thiosulphate leaching may be considered as an alternative to conventional cyanide chemistry (Baláz, et al., 2000). Natural carbonaceous matter is composed mainly of hydrocarbons, organic acids, and graphitic/amorphous elemental carbon. Natural elemental carbon that behaves as activated carbon is considered to be the main reason for preg-robbing, although the true nature of this phenomenon is not fully understood (Tan, Feng, Lukey, & van Deventer, 2005). In general, the hydrocarbon fraction is assumed to have negligible interaction with gold, while organic acids, such as humic acids, may form complexes with gold, inhibiting its extraction in cyanide solutions. Organic reagents have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Abotsi & Osseo-Asare (1987) tested various organic compounds, with two possible effects in mind. First, the organic compounds were expected to adsorb onto the surface of the solids as anionic/cationic species; the resulting electrostatic interactions between the Au(CN)2- anion and the negatively/positively charged surface would inhibit/enhance the gold uptake. Second, the organic reagents were expected to coat the surface of the carbonaceous component in the ore, limiting the available adsorption sites and reducing gold losses. "The tungsten-bismuth-molybdenum deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs in greisenized and silicified tuffite * and feldspar porphyry in and adjacent to volcanic necks. The ore minerals occur as veins and veinlets and as disseminated grains in gangue. These minerals can be grouped into three assemblages. Assemblage 1 consists of oxides and phosphates of W, Ti, Fe, Nb, Sn, Ta and rare-earth elements, with the main minerals being deposited in the sequence wolframite, rutile, cassiterite. Assemblage 2 consists of arsenopyrite, molybdenite and bismuth, and assemblage 3 of sulphides with minor cassiterite and arsenopyrite. Sphalerite is the main sulphide mineral, but it contains minute inclusions of copper-tin- and indium-bearing minerals. Textural relations suggest that most of the elements can be recovered from this ore by conventional mineral beneficiation and extraction methods, but a variety of techniques must be employed. It is expected that the wolframite and molybdenite can be recovered satisfactorily, but poor recoveries are expected for bismuth and cassiterite. A sphalerite concentrate can be readily obtained by flotation, but it would contain a wide variety of elements. It is suggested that leaching be used to recover the bismuth and the elements in the sphalerite concentrate."

During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. "Bedding-parallel thrust-hosted gold veins are developed in the Sabie-Pilgrim&apos;s Rest goldfield, eastern Transvaal, South Africa. The reefs display a complex history characterized by temporally and spatially overlapping events of similar mineralization and deformation. Recognition of the episodic reactivation of these low angle (5° to 10°) thrust faults implicates high fluid pressures (equalling or exceeding lithostatic pressures). Geochemical constraints limit the amount of fluid-rock interaction and the occurrence of transgressive mineralization within the Archaean granitoid basement suggests that the high pressure fluids originated at depth beneath the Transvaal Basin.Similarities exist between gold deposits of Sabie-Pilgrim&apos;s Rest and Telfer, Western Australia as well as Passagem de Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. All deposits are sub-parallel to the enclosing bedding which is shallowly inclined. Furthermore, they are also hosted by contractional deformational structures and are clearly epigenetic in origin."

For example, simple methane-air mixtures at standard temperature and pressure are non-explosive below 12% oxygen. In actual mine fires, combustible gases may include hydrogen and carbon monoxide as well as methane. Such gases are also rendered non-explosive with oxygen removal to below 40/0. Fuel-rich oxygen-deficient mixtures can however be made explosive through dilution with air. Such dilution can occur downwind of the fire. It is also important to remember that the atmosphere in a sealed-off fire zone is rarely homogenous.b. Reduced Fire Intensity and SpreadIn a fire zone the initial combustion may well set alight materials surrounding the fire. Inerting can reduce the intensity and spread of secondary combustion and can cool the area surrounding the fire zone after the fire itself has been extinguished.c. Reduced Air LeakageLeakage of air into sealed areas in excess of the natural leakage may be reduced either by introducing inert gas into the leakage paths to replace air or by pressure balancing seals and providing a chamber of nitrogen on the outbye side of the seals. Both methods assist in the reduction of the intensity of combustion and hasten oxygen starvation."

The Brazilian economy has always presented a strong correlation with the mineral activity. Since colonization days, due to the territorial expansion caused by the explorers search for gold, mining in Brazil became a basic sector of national economy. Currently, the Brazilian mineral sector¹ estimates a 550% production increment (Figure 1A) in the last 10 years, reaching the US$ 50 billion value, reflecting the increased global demand for raw materials from mineral origin. According to the Brazilian Constitution², mineral resources belong to the Federal State and, consequently, their exploitation must be authorized, under penalty of engendering federal crime. Furthermore, activities of this nature are prone to cause environmental degradation such as, but not limited to, deforestation, pollution, soil deterioration and water contamination. The GPEMA represents the forensics group of the Brazilian Federal Police responsible for the technical analysis of traces related to crimes against the environment and consequently, illegal mining cases.
