Cadmium and other 'minor' metals in Canada tend to remain inconspicuous given the prominence of the country's massive production of other minerals. This same reality is reflected in the accuracy and deficiency of quantitative data concerning the sources of supply and demand for these metals. It is the intent of this paper to identify the nature of some of these difficulties and to reconstruct a more accurate description of Canada's production and consumption of cadmium, based on the results of recent surveys undertaken by the Mineral Policy Sector of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada and Noranda Sales Corporation Ltd.

The Wallaroo smelter on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia commenced smelting operations in 1861 treating ores from the nearby Moonta and Kadina mines. The plant expanded and modernized on several occasions and was a leader in the successful introduction of new technology to improve operations. It operated continuously until 1923 when local mines became exhausted; in the closing stages of the 19th century it was the largest copper smelter in the world outside of those in Swansea, Wales. In 1892 a small electrolytic refinery was established at Wallaroo, the first in Australia, based on principles developed by Elkington at Pembrey, Wales in 1869. The Wallaroo refinery was specifically built to recover gold and silver from copper produced by smelting gold-containing feed materials shipped from Western Australia. This first venture into electrolytic refining was replaced in 1903 by a somewhat larger refinery which, although modest in size for its time, with a capacity of about 1000 tonnes of cathode copper per year, was very productive in precious metals. Anode copper was produced by an updated version of the reverberatory-based Welsh process until 1910 when barrel-type pneumatic converters were introduced based on American practice; subsequently, anodes were cast by tapping the precious-metals rich "bottoms" portion of converter copper as produced at about one-fifth into the copper blow. The present paper describes the Wallaroo refinery, its anode supply and products, supported by initial observations on a sample of a Wallaroo cathode held in the collection of the South Australia Museum, Adelaide SA, Australia. INTRODUCTION Australia ranked 6th in the world for copper mine production in 2018, with an output of 918,000 tonnes of mined copper, after Chile, Peru, Congo, China and the USA; about 40% of Australian mined copper was smelted in the country. Interestingly, the world ranking of Australia in mined copper has, with a few variations, remained about the same for more than 100 years – of interest, it was also the 6th largest country for copper production at 21,089 tonnes in 1899. At that time, all or most of the copper was smelted in the country (Mackey, 2016). Copper was first discovered in Australia in 1842 in South Australia not far from Adelaide; additional copper discoveries in the region soon followed. At first, copper ore was shipped to Swansea, Wales for smelting (Bampton, 2003). However, in addition to the long, 150 day one-way sea passage, it seems Welsh smelters preferred higher grade of ores – these aspects and likely a mood in the new colony to be independent of Swansea (Evans, 2014) evidently encouraged local smelting at the mine sites using small, Welsh-type reverberatory furnaces fired with hardwood as fuel and operated by Welsh and Cornish migrants. The first large copper smelter in Australia commenced in 1848 at Bremer, near Callington some 60 km east of Adelaide. With larger discoveries on Yorke Peninsula, the Wallaroo copper smelter at Wallaroo Bay on the west coast of the peninsula commenced operations in 1861 (Bell & McCarthy, 2008). Thus began one of the most successful, and in its day, one of the most advanced and innovative plants in Australia if not the world. "QCM's pellet plant, located in Port-Cartier, Quebec, produces up to 8.6 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Four different types are produced: three for blast furnace operations and one for direct reduction furnaces. The paper presents the scientific approach that led to the installation of new process equipment to improve the reducibility of direct reduction pellets (DR pellet). The findings, the equipment selection and some post start-up modifications are presented.This low silica DR pellet is used in Midrex and HyL shaft furnaces. A good DR pellet has to meet strict chemical, physical and metallurgical specifications. An important metallurgical property is its ability to release oxygen when exposed to reducing gases. Considering that the market for DR pellets is expanding and being aware that reducibility is critical for our clients, a program to improve the latter was undertaken. Test work showed that one factor which has a negative effect on reducibility is the proportion of particles larger than 75 microns. Knowing that the best way to reduce the amount of coarse particles was to close our open grinding circuits, we began evaluating the most suitable classification equipment applicable to our process operations. We settled on hydro-classifiers based on their very sharp cut and their low operating costs. In light of the hydro-classifiers performance it was also decided to replace the hydro-cyclones of an already closed circuit.INTRODUCTIONAt the Québec Cartier Mining pellet plant, continuous improvement programs are aimed at increasing levels of consistency and improved chemical, physical and metallurgical properties. This is being accomplished while still maintaining pellet plant production volumes to satisfy market demands.QCM produces three types of pellets for blast furnace use: acid pellets, designated as ""BHF"", fluxed pellets, designated as ""BAF"", and low silica fluxed pellets, designated as ""BSA"". For direct reduction, a low silica acid pellet or DR pellet, designated as ""BBS"" is produced. This low silica DR pellet is used in Midrex and HyL shaft furnaces.The demand for DR pellets has been increasing during the last few years and is believed to continue so in the future. Wanting to be present in this growing market QCM found that it would be essential to work at improving its DR pellets quality. Efforts have been focused on improvements in three areas: SiO2 reduction, elimination of sticking and increasing reducibility. Improvement programs have begun with laboratory research followed by plant trials and full-scale implementation as a cooperative effort among QCM, COREM, and key customers."

IT HAS BEEN KNOWN for many years that alloy steels can become brittle when tempered in the range of 350-600°C, or cooled slowly after heating to higher temperatures. The metallurgical literature reveals that blacksmiths were aware as early as 1883 that water quenching was necessary after heat treatment above 600°C to avoid brittleness. It has also been known for years that the problem is associated with trace impurities; a paper in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute of 1894 refers to the brittle, faceted fractures that occur in steels containing arsenic, phosphorus or sulphur. However, definitive investigation of the mechanism of embrittlement has been possible only within the last decade with the introduction of new experimental techniques to investigate surfaces, especially Auger electron spectroscopy. It is now possible to study in detail the chemistry of surfaces with a resolution of an atomic layer or two, and enormous progress has been made recently in studying the segregation of impurities to grain boundaries by exposing the boundaries by fracture inside the microscope. A clear picture of the processes occurring and their interpretation is now emerging, as was particularly clear at the recent 1977 ASM Materials Science Seminar on Interfacial Segregation held in Chicago in October. Recent research in this area has pointed the way for commercial exploitation of this new knowledge and experimental technology. It is the purpose of this article to trace progress in understanding temper embrittlement and to indicate other areas where control of interfacial segregation and its effects can be important in metallurgical applications.

The insecure rock may be a weak beam or loose from arching or from sloughing. The material is strengthened and held in place before damage can result.Little is known of the limitations of rock bolting; to date, work has been carried on by trial-and-error, with large safety factors being used. Rock bolts have been principally used for roof support. Bolting offers a new field of support to the mining industry: it now has a permanent position as a ground control method.HistoryRock bolting is a relatively new means of support, its exact origin being unknown.Bolting has been in use at the St. Joseph Lead Company's property in Southeastern Missouri for the past twenty-six years, the first attempts having been hit-or-miss trials before a systematic attack was made. Many instances of occasional use of rock bolts have come to light .in widely separated mining camps, .some dating back forty years.The first installations were made as supplements to wooden timbering where space was restricted. On exploite le chrysotile dans le sud du Quebec depuis plus de cent ans. Au cours des dernieres decennies, cette variete d'amiante est devenue une des principales substances minerales produites au Quebec. Bien que la production de fibres d'amiante ait diminue de J 365 779 ten /979 a que!que 700 000 ten 1983, le Quebec n'en demeure pas mains une des principa/es sources d'approvisionnement mondial de ce mineral, la valeur des exportations quebecoises ayant ete de l'ordre de 315 millions de dollars en 1983. Dans la presente contribution, nous passons en revue que!ques-unes des notions mineralogiques sur l'amiante, depuis l'etymologie du mot et les proprietes physico-chimiques du mineral, jusqu'd ses principales utilisations commercia/es et industrielles. Un des deux objectifs principaux de noire article est de definir brievement le contexte geologique regional, la lithologie et /'age des roches ultramafiques serpentinisees et de decrire les principales caracteristiques des gftes de chrysotile qu'elles renferment et qui furent exploites a date dans /es Appa/aches du sud quebecois. "THE TOPIC on which I am speaking this afternoon is ""The Future of the Canadian Oil Industry.'' At the time of C + 100, we should take a searching look at ourselves, an honest appraisal of our achievements and a forthright accounting of our shortcomings as well as the uniquely Canadian aspects of this industry. I would like to put before you some of my views on the direction we are taking in the exploration field and in the production field. I would also like to speak briefly on some of our problems and the role of the various segments of our industry in solving these problems.First of all, let us look at the exploration picture. We are in the midst of an exploration boom. There were 133 seismic crews active in Western Canada this winter, the highest since 1957, land prices are appreciating rapidly, Canadian oil reserves increased + 16 per cent during 1966, there is a great demand for technical personnel of every kind and the whole industry, except the drilling segment, seems to be prospering. This surge of activity has its roots in two major occurrences. The first of these was the change in the pro-ration system in Alberta, the major producing province, accompanied by the change in spacing pat-terns. The proration change was designed primarily to encourage in-creased exploration and it has certainly had this effect. It has also had the unforeseen effect of put-ting everyone into what we, in the oil business, call ""elephant hunting."" In other words, the days of the development of barely economic, marginal fields are over. Oil companies today are only interested in high-reserve, high-productivity, high-quality reservoirs."

The Quebec Cartier Mining Company produces iron concentrate for twelve months of the year from Port Cartier. This J>Ort is designed to handle ship varying in size from 3,000 to 100,000 d.w.t., requiring 50 feet of water at low tide. The harbour was built on shore for reasons of economy and layout, after considering many more conventional offshore designs. It provides for heavy oil bunkering, tanker off-loading, a heavy lift derrick and freight handling, besides ship loading and mooring. The weather for the previous fifty years was studied to enable wind and wave conditions to be accurately assessed for design purposes, and to determine probable lost time due to adverse weather conditions through-out the year. The first ship to be loaded was 60,000 d.w.t.; the second, 20,000 d.w.t. The latter entered the harbour after dark, under its own power, following a tug through the partly dredged narrow entrance. Large ships use tug assistance. Ships may leave the loading berth with the other berths occupied.

"IntroductionTHE KNOWLEDGE about the mineral resources in a region ranges from relatively precise ore-reserve estimates for known deposits to probabilistic estimates concerning the speculative resources which may be discovered in future at greater depths and in the less-explored parts of the region. Previously developed probabilistic methods for regional resource evaluation (1) are based on the following two assumptions.(1) The probability that a specific block of rock, or part of a region close to the topographic surface, contains undiscovered deposits can be estimate d by weighting selected geological, geophysical or geochemical parameters for that block. The weights are computed by considering similar environments which are known to contain deposits.(2) Some of the characteristics of the undiscovered deposits, such as ore tonnages and average grades of metals contained in the ore, can be evaluated by considering probability distributions f or known deposit data. These methods were initially applied to Precambrian deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt of the Canadian Shield (1).Since 1972, statistical methods for quantitative resource evaluation have been applied to the occurrences of the mainly Paleozoic base metal deposits in t he Canadian Appalachian Region. The objectives of this project (Project Appalachia) have been discussed by Leech (2) in a paper that introduces 8 papers with results of the exploratory data analysis. Project Appalachia represents an effort to develop and apply methods of combining information and concepts from regional geology, metallogeny and geomathematics for computer- aided regional mineral resource evaluation."

Surface limitations and a need for more direct transportation routes require serious consideration be given to the development of underground construction works in geotechnically unfavourable conditions. Due to geographical and logistical limitations, the construction of these underground works is restricted to difficult ground conditions that require temporary pre-support before excavation in order to avoid tunnel collapse or severe surface settlement. One type of pre-support is the umbrella arch system, which has been gaining popularity due to cost and time commitment in comparison with other pre-support systems (e.g., ground freezing). The umbrella arch system has been employed with significant frequency around the world, yet without a complete understanding about the mechanical response of the system. As such, literature has found the temporary support system to be both under and over designed with regard to safety and/or economical impact. The authors of this paper have made three major contributions to increase understanding of the umbrella arch system and to help optimize the design process. Firstly, the authors have developed nomenclature in order to categorize and define umbrella arch elements and systems, which also stimulated the creation of the empirically driven Umbrella Arch Selection Chart. Secondly, the authors have established a design methodology that is primarily based on advanced numerical modelling techniques to aid in the optimized design of the umbrella arch arrangement for site specific conditions. Thirdly, the authors have developed a semi-analytical model for umbrella arch systems employed in squeezing ground conditions by incorporating elastic foundation theory as well as convergence confinement theory. These three major contributions to such a widely employed tunnelling pre-support system will be introduced and explained in detail, and will include discussion of how each is incorporated in the complete tunnel support design process and throughout the construction and monitoring phase of a project.

"A mine shaft is one main development method of establishing access in an underground mine. The construction technology of the mine shaft sinking is complicated and large equipment setup on surface and in the mine shaft. The paper briefly reviews a single-line operation method, parallel operation method and mixed operation method as well as the features of the one operation method with the excavation, lining and installation. The special construction technology mainly would include ground freezing methods, full diameter shaft drilling methods, caisson methods, grouting technology and concrete curtain methods as well as other methods. The paper summarizes the shaft sinking numbers and effects by the special construction methods during different periods. The paper states the shaft sinking conditions and the each created record conditions in the coal, metallurgy, non-ferrous metal, hydropower, highway, railway, nonmetallic and other industries. The paper has a prediction on the shaft sinking requirements and development tendency in the future for China.INTRODUCTIONA mine shaft is one main development method of access in an underground mine. In recent years in China the new shaft mines represent 45% of the total number of new mines. With the development of new mining area under construction and the development of deeper mines, the ratio of the mine shaft as access for underground mines will increase. The construction technology of the mine shaft engineering will be complicated, the operation site footprint will be small and the working environment will be more difficult. The mine shaft sinking operation will often be varied by the geological conditions and affected by underground water inflows, seam gas outbursts, geothermal and other natural conditions. The safe construction of the mine shaft sinking will be challenged by all these conditions. Although the mine shaft engineering will only be about 5% of the total mine roadway engineering, the mine shaft construction period often will take over 40% of the total mine construction period. With the progress of modernized mine production technology and the construction of a high production and high efficient mine, the mine transportation roadways mostly would be set in the seam and the engineered amount of the mine rock roadways reduced year by year could cause more prominent long extensions of the mine shaft construction period. Therefore, in order to speed up the construction, to shorten the mine construction period and to realize the investment benefits as early as possible, the technical level of the mine shaft sinking should firstly be improved and the construction speed of the mine shaft engineering and sinking should be speeded up, which would have important significant benefits."

The quantity of data available and the rate at which we access such data are rapidly increasing. Electronic data capture systems, fleet management systems and a host of other technological advancements have created a constant stream of real-time, tactical data. However, are we taking advantage of this data? Are we converting data into useful information to aid in efficient decision-making? Mining operations are struggling with ?information overload?, finding it difficult to extract the benefits from vast stores of data. Without the necessary tools to facilitate a data filtering and information reporting process, most operations revert to old practises such as re-entering data into multiple spreadsheet reports. As a result, the ability to make effective use of data still eludes many mining operations. Some operations have taken audacious steps to rectify this situation. The De Beers Venetia mine in South Africa has implemented an integrated mining information technology solution that transforms their data into practical, usable information allowing staff and management to make decisions that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. In the absence of quantitative justification or ROI, De Beers took a risk in implementing change. Today, they are realising the benefits. This paper will unearth the information technology issues that surfaced during the Venetia implementation, then identify the benefits De Beers has obtained from deploying an integrated mining information technology solution at the Venetia mine.

"Temporal and other factors contributing to the occurrence of occupational accidents at an underground coal mine in Turkey between 1992 and 2000 have been analyzed. The time period of the study spanned the transition from hand-worked mining methods (1992 to 1996) to hand-worked mining methods and mechanized mining methods (1997 to 2000).The mine selected for the study employed an average of 5,835 men per year on three separate eight-hour production shifts for 302 d/y (Sundays are not worked, and there are 11 holiday days per year). Production on an annual basis averaged 190,000 tons per year between 1992 and 1996, and 300,000 tons per year between 1997 and 2000.The purpose of the study was to determine which, if any, of the factors studied contributed to the occurrence of accidents so that the mine could take the necessary steps to reduce the risk to the workforce. Regression analysis was used to determine the strength of the relationship between each factor studied and the number of occupational accidents.The strongest relationships observed were between the age of the employee, the day of the week, and the total yearly labour."

Most pressure oxidation operations introduce oxygen through a large multi-use nozzle in the vapour space of the autoclave. Sparge pipes extend inside the vessel to the point of discharge below the compartment agitator. However, two zinc pressure leach operations have successfully used a bottom entry oxygen sparge system for a number of years. Recently, the concept has been used in a whole ore gold pressure oxidation operation as well as a copper pressure leach plant. Both of the latter operations also introduce cooling water for temperature control through the same sparge pipe. This paper addresses the benefits of the bottom entry system with regards to autoclave performance and the positive effects on agitator performance.

"The development of industry and intensive use of natural resources leads to a significant decrease in the share of reserves of rich ores, deposits of which have nearly all been exploited. Large amounts of displaced rock mass are accumulated, significant emissions of gas and dust from mining, dust from dumps and tailing pits, ingress of chemicals and toxic elements in surface and groundwater all can have negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health. Especially dangerous is the impact in Arctic regions with extreme climate conditions. The maintenance of overburden dumps and tailings dams requires significant capital and material costs. In this paper, some mining enterprises of the Murmansk region, in the Russian Federation, consider the environmental problems of the industry and propose some solutions.INTRODUCTIONThe safety of environment during the extraction and processing of minerals is a very acute problem throughout the whole world. The problem acquires a specific character in the Russian Federation. There, rather poor minerals, often existing in unconventional forms and including several mineral components are processed. The Russian mineral base has a specific geographical location; most of the deposits under operation are located in the Subarctic or Arctic regions, as well as in Siberia and in the Far East. Vast amounts of rock waste and tailings pose serious economic and ecological problems in mining regions. The operation of overburden heaps and tailings requires considerable capital and material costs. The dumps withdraw vast lands from potential commercial use. Large amounts of mined rock disturb the existing geological balance; emissions of gas and dust which accompany the mining operations, dusting of waste heaps and tailings, emissions of reagents and heavy metals into natural surface and ground waters all can produce negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health."

As a bubble travels through the pulp region of a flotation cell, it will collect the most hydrophobic particles of an intermediate particle size range, this being the primary source of true flotation selectivity. Despite its role on bubble-particle attachment, however, particle hydrophobicity is still missing a mathematical definition that can be used for plant simulation. In this paper, particle hydrophobicity is defined in terms of the induction time necessary for attachment and then linked to the mass of collector adsorbed per particle. This allows particle hydrophobicity to be written as a function of density of collector adsorption as well as particle size and mineralogy. The model is calibrated from the experimental measurement of the flotation rate constant. Liberation data from an industrial flotation rougher is used for model validation. It is demonstrated that the model can describe a broad experimental dataset by means of a minimal number of parameters. Main industrial application is in simulating the effect of the chemical environment upon plant metallurgical performance.

"Significant energy savings are often possible for centrifugal compressors operating in parallel by improved control strategy and improved instrumentation. Blow-off can usually be reduced by improved surge control combined with a better control strategy for loading and unloading the group of machines. More precise and stable pressure control then becomes possible. This improved control strategy will also decrease the frequency of operation near the dangerous limits of surge or overload or overspeed. A sample station of mixed centrifugal and reciprocating compressors is examined and a substantial energy saving with the recommended control strategy is projected from operating data. Present Operating Conditions of the Compressed Air StationThe Compressor StationThe compressor station described here has three centrifugal compressors and three reciprocating. It supplies a mine in New Brunswick.Compressed Air and Power ConsumptionFigure I and Figure 2 provide graphs of air consumption and pressure changes based on the owner's data.During the typical two-shift operating day (Fig . I) in the non-productive shift (midnight to 8:00 a.m.), the consumption stays at a level of 9,000 SCFM. This corresponds to a pressure of 110 PSIG. Then, after 8:00 a.m ., the air consumption starts to increase and th e pressure decreases. Around 10:00 a.m., the consumption reaches its maximum level at 97 PSIG. Around II :30 a.m., the air consumption starts to decrease because of the production drop during the lunch break of the first shift. Pressure increases again up to 109 PSIG. After the break, consumption rises to its maximum level over 16,000 SCFM andpressure drops to 97 PSIG.Around 2:30 p.m., the air consumption drops sharply to 9,000 SCFM because of the production decrease to zero level. This drop results from changing of shifts. The pressure at this time increases again up to 110 PSIG. The second shift (2:30 to II :30 p.m.) is an alogous to the first.During the three-shift operating day, the break around 4:00 . a.m . and the shift change around 6:30 a.m. cause sharp drops in air consumption. The pressure for almost the entire night shift stays near 110 PSIG because the station is working with blowing-off even under the maximum consumption. The analysis of Figures I and 2 shows that the pressure varies with the air consumption changes. During non -productive time (non-production shifts , shift changes and breaks) or during the night shift, the total station capacity is proportional to the discharge pressure. "Careful tax planning and proper attention to the regulations can result in an optimum deduction ""of the 25% federal resource allowance. Introduced in the Income Tax Act in1976, in part to compensate for the disallowance of provincial mining taxes and royalties. the 25% ""resource allowance"" is a permitted deduction in computing taxable income from mining and petroleum. However, the rules relating to the deduction are complex, and the importance of the deduction which can readily exceed 25% of net income- is frequently underestimated.
