The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy. The construction of electric generating facilities in Canada is expanding at a rapid rate to satisfy the demands of a rising population and new uses for electrical energy. With remaining economic water power resources in the process of development, generation from thermal sources continues to grow. The increase in thermal capability has been somewhat arrested by a de-pressed economy, widening of inter-provincial and state transmission networks and decisions to exploit certain water resources before high capital investment is further in-creased by rising construction costs. The introduction of extra high volt-age transmission lines will further delay thermal generation planning, but in due course, when the effects of restrictive factors have been dissipated, steam-electric generation from fossil fuels will rise to considerable proportions. In time, nuclear sources will contribute a growing share to thermal power, but, it is doubtful if nuclear participation will ever displace conventional fuels for steam rising, unless it can be adapted to operate efficiently for variable outputs in peaking service. "Nickel saprolite ores are normally mined as feed to Fe-Ni smelters or Ni matte smelting operations. The smelting processes typically require high Ni cut-off grades of approximately 1.5 to 2.2% Ni, depending on the operation. These very high cut-off grades result in a significant portion of the saprolite profile being regarded as “waste” and hence having little to no value. The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) was developed to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel saprolites and Caron plant residues. Relatively small amounts of acid are applied to ground saprolites or Caron residues in order to selectively leach nickel and cobalt. The leaching is performed atmospherically under low free acid conditions. Nickel and cobalt may be recovered from the leachate as a mixed hydroxide. The mixed hydroxide may be added directly to a saprolite smelting operation or refined separately. InCoR Technologies is advancing the application of SALT at a number of sites. Bench scale testing has provided a relationship between acid addition and nickel extraction in leaching. Conceptual engineering studies have been completed by SNC Lavalin. The simplicity of the SALT technology provides the benefits of low capital and operating cost and an expected rapid ramp up to full production.INTRODUCTION The recent history of hydrometallurgical nickel laterite treatment plants has demonstrated mixed financial and operational performance. Table 1 summarizes the next generation plants built after the financial and/or technical failure of the Bulong, Cawse and Murrin-Murrin plants in Australia. The Coral Bay plants (Line 1 and 2) stand out (and now Taganito) as relatively low capital cost, simple (no acid plant, production of mixed sulfide product), and modest in scale (10, 12 and 36 kt Ni/a). However, the other plants in the list (Ravensthorpe, Ramu, Goro and Ambatovy) are all characterized by financial and technical challenges. All plants have a very high capital cost ($67,000 to $120,000 USD/annual t of Ni production). Ravensthorpe was sold by BHP Billiton after a poor startup. Ramu has had a steady ramp up but only produces mixed hydroxide for refining by others. Goro has had an extended construction period (since 2001), is high cost and has been very slow to ramp up to design production rates. Ambatovy has had a steady ramp up."

INTRODUCTION IN PREPARING this paper for the District 4 Meeting, three factors had to be considered. First, the paper must fit the time alloted; second, it must give a general picture of the geology for those unfamiliar with the property; and third, it must contain some new material in order to be of interest to local delegates. The most comprehensive extant discussion of the geology of the property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, is contained in Horwood's report on the general Red Lake area ( 1). This report is the 'bible' of the area, and a general paper on the geology of this particular mine would almost certainly appear to be a condensation of it. It was thought, therefore, that the most suitable procedure would be to base the general outline on Horwood' s report, to extend that outline where possible from information gained since its publication, and finally to leave dangling for the contemplative geologist some of the ideas and problems which ?are currently under consideration. LOCATION AND HISTORY The property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, is in Dome township, in the Red Lake mining division of northwestern Ontario. The mine is on McKenzie Island, about four miles north, by water, of the Hasaga mine and old Howey mine.

Introduction Lithium has been known since 1817, when it was discovered by the Swedish chemist, Arfvedson, while working in the laboratory of Berzelius on the chemical analysis of the mineral petalite, LiAl(Si205)2. Development of the chemistry of lithium proceeded slowly, following the early work of Davy, Gmelin, Bunsen, and Matthiessen. Approximately seventy years elapsed before lithium products assumed any commercial importance, and for a considerable period it was a' very minor industry. Their chief early use seems to have been in medicine, and in the production of lithiated water. Other more important uses were gradually discovered, and the industry has had a slow but steady growth. Chemistry Lithium is classified as an alkali metal, along with sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cæsium. Like these, it is a silvery-white metal, which can be cut with a knife; it is harder than sodium, but softer than lead" It is remarkable in having a density of only 0.53 gram per cubic centimeter, which makes it the lightest metal. On ignition in air, it burns intensely to form chiefly lithium monoxide, Li2O. Like the other alkali metals, lithium reacts vigorously with water to form hydrogen and lithium hydroxide. The later is a strong base, and reacts with acids to form salts. The salts of lithium are in general analogous to those of the -other alkalies, but many of them have unique properties. For example, lithium chloride and bromide are extremely hygroscopic, and have a very high water solubility. Lithium fluoride, phosphate, and carbonate, on the other hand, are all relatively insoluble, unlike the corresponding sodium and potassium compounds. In this instance, lithium exhibits its frequent tendency to resemble the alkaline-earth group of elements (calcium, strontium, and barium). Many of the special and valuable properties of lithium are related to the extremely small size of the lithium ion.

THE EXCUSE for producing still another paper dealing with the oilfields of the Middle East is the overwhelming importance of this area to everyone, both inside and out of the oil industry. Figure 1 shows the area defined as the Middle East for the purpose of this paper. No description of what constitutes the Middle East is generally acceptable to everyone and, in fact, in many parts of the world it is referred to as "Western Asia". At the time ?the writer went to work as a geologist in the Middle East -this was in 1926 -there were just three known oilfields, namely, Hurghada in Egypt, Naft Khaneh in the Transferred Territories of Iraq, and Masjid-i-Sulai-man in Persia. Their combined producing rate at that time was around 100,000 barrels per day. Toda y, just thirty years later, some forty-two fields have been proven to exist, and a recent discovery in Syria -if commercial -may add one more to the list. Producing rates at the end of last year ( 1956) were approaching four million barrels per day. This sizable figure re presents nearly 23 per cent of the total Free World's production. What is more important still, something over 70 per cent of the Free World's proven oil reserves are known to exist in the subsoil of the Middle East.

The authors discuss the application of drum and friction hoists under modern conditions and give four examples of friction hoists proposed for various applications. The paper concludes with a summary of the advantages and limitations of friction hoists relative to drum hoists. Introduction T H~ introduction of the multiple-rope friction hoist m the late 1940's has complicated the se-lection of the right hoist for a given job. Once such considerations as rope safety factor, drum to rope ratio, hoisting distance, tons per hour and/or service duty have been decided upon, the selection of a drum hoist is relatively simple. We now ask our-selves "which hoist -drum or friction? (See Figure 1 and Figure 2). When a friction hoist is a possibility we are immediately concerned with how many ropes to use, whether to hoist balanced or counter-balanced, whether a friction hoist will be flexible enough for the application and, of course, what the relative costs will be.

"After cooling and thickening, slurry from the second stage of the Hudbay zinc pressure leach circuit is filtered and washed on a belt filter prior to disposal. At times, the belt filter can be a bottleneck to the process. Preliminary studies show that filterability of the second-stage (HAL) autoclave leach residue can be indicated by particle size distribution of the filter feed and filtered residue cake. In particular, the Volume Weighted Mean Diameter, D[4,3], generated by a laser diffraction particle size analyzer from samples of HAL Filter feed, shows residues that filter more poorly have a lower Volume Weighted Mean Diameter than those that filter better. INTRODUCTIONHudbay produces cast zinc metal from blends of zinc concentrates at its metallurgical complex in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, using Sherritt’s two-stage pressure leach process (Collins et al., 1994; Collins et al., 1995; Barth et al., 1998; Shairp et al., 2006). Pressure leaching replaced the original roastleach- electrowinning process in 1993.Filtration for the second-stage (HAL) leach residue originally consisted of two stages of vacuum drum filtration with intermediate cake repulping stirred tanks. As part of Hudbay’s 777 Project, with a designed increase in cast zinc production, a pre-feasibility study by SNC-Lavalin Inc. showed that losses of soluble zinc in the zinc pressure leach residue could be reduced by installing more efficient filtering and washing equipment. Based on laboratory performance, capital cost, installation ability, and potential operating cost savings, a 70 m2 Filtres Phillipe belt filter was chosen for the HAL residue, and commissioned in 2000/2001.When the HAL belt filter is performing well, there is no pooling of water on the surface, moisture content is relatively low, and subsequent analysis shows that water soluble zinc content is relatively low. There have been occasions where the filter has performed poorly with respect to the aforementioned parameters. "Abstract - In 1989-1990, the SeaMARC II side-looking sonar (11 to 12 kHz) and swath bathymetric system imaged more than 80 000 km2 of the seafloor in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and southern Arctic Ocean. One of our main goals was to investigate the highly oblique (115°) junction between the Mohns and Knipovich ridges, and to determine, using new morphotectonic data, whether or not this junction is stable or in a state of readjustment. These findings are presented in this paper.Along the northern Mohns Ridge, we observed a highly segmented rift valley undisturbed by transform faults. In contrast to the elevated Reykjanes Ridge, the Mohns Ridge is dominated by deep en echelon fault-bounded troughs, which are bordered by high rift valley volcanoes. These segment boundaries are interpreted to be sites of recent to present volcanic activity, based on their high acoustic reflectivity. The northwestern flank of the Mohns Ridge is marked by shallow quasi-linear ridges parallel to the present orientation of the Mohns Ridge. The orientation and geographic position of these ridges suggest that they were formed at the Mohns Ridge. Only in the northernmost cases are some of these off-axial ridges non-linear. The degree of the non-linearities increases slightly with proximity to the Mohns-Knipovich bend. In addition, because no transform fault was detected between the Mohns and Knipovich ridges, we conclude that the Knipovich Ridge must be obliquely spreading to the NW-SE."

CANADIANS are world leaders in marketing metal and mineral products. Noranda Sales Corporation Ltd. is an international metal and mineral product marketing company operating from Toronto and London, England, where it operates a wholly owned sales subsidiary and is a 50% partner in Rudolf Wolff and Company Ltd., a charter member and the largest metal broker on the London Metal Exchange. Noranda Sales employs 97 people, of whom 52 are university trained and professionally competent in international resource product marketing. We market for 19 companies or divisions in the Noranda Group and 39 companies for whom we act as agent, consultant and purchaser of resource production. Our business in 1976 was 1.5 billion dollars carried out in 45 countries and covering 24 products and materials. Today, ownership of most of the mining industry in Canada has transferred back to Canadians, and this is said with the knowledge that a significant part of the Canadian industry has been Canadian owned and managed from its very early days. Noranda Mines Limited is such an example. It was born in 1922 as the result of a copper-gold showing at Noranda, Quebec, discovered by Ed Horne, a prospector, financed with a grubstake by a syndicate mainly composed of New York businessmen. Shortly after the discovery, when the shares of the company had risen, the syndicate was sold to Canadian interests and, since that time, Noranda has been dominantly Canadian owned and certainly Canadian managed. Today, over 90% of Noranda's shareholders are Canadian, who hold an equivalent percentage of the stock.

"This paper reviews the installation, start-up, and operation of a comprehensive monitoring and targeting management technique in which all plant utilities (i.e., electricity, natural gas, compressed air, and water) are managed as controllable resources in the same way that raw materials, mined ore, personnel and capital are managed.The essential elements of monitoring and targeting (M&T) include:•gathering in a systematic, disciplined way the utility information by energy account centres;•closely monitoring the utilities used in each centre and comparing them with production on a common time base (e.g., kWh/ton per day);•bench marking and target setting to pro-vide attainable energy reduction goals which can be further refined as they are achieved; and•establishing an implementation plant that may provide efficiency enhancing benefits to various operating areas within the plant.The M&T system will reduce utility consumption per unit of production on a continuing basis.This would translate into sustained operating cost and waste. M&T will also provide better information for assessing the plant operation and progressively implementing further enhancements."

"This paper discusses past and current energy use patterns in the mining and manufacturing sectors of the industrial minerals industry. Information is presented on the primary energy input types as purchased by the industry, the quality and form of the energy actually required by the various production processes, and the residual form of this energy, either embodied in the product or rejected in gaseous and liquid waste heat streams. With the continuing concerns about the availability of energy combined with the rapidly increasing cost of energy as a production input, the reduction of energy usage through improved efficiency will undoubtedly be an increasing priority for the industry during the 1980s. Reduced energy consumption through investment to improve energy efficiency appears to be advantageous from both the corporate and national perspectives.IntroductionEnergy, like labour and materials, is one of the basic production input s to the various mining, processing and manufacturing production stages in the industrial minerals industry. Energy costs, as a percentage of total production costs, have been well above the average for industry in Canada, accounting for more than 50 cents out of every dollar in the most extreme cases. Consequently, energy has always been a relatively important management concern in the industrial minerals industry.The energy supply and price situation in Canada and internationally has been changing rapidly since 1973, following a long period characterized by declining real energy prices and an abundance and wide choice of energy supplies. It is generally accepted that energy prices will continue to increase rapidly, and that there will be uncertainties about the long-term continuity of supply of some energy types. In essence, a period of relative stability has been replaced by a period of relative uncertainty. In such a changing situation, a reassessment of the role of energy as a production input is appropriate.The following sections outline some of the effects of the changing energy scene on the industrial minerals industry. These effects are dealt with primarily in terms of energy costs, because, in most circumstances, a change in the cost of energy as a production input is the end result of both energy price and energy supply changes."

"Metallurgical extraction processes often call for the heating of aqueous slurries. Indirect heat exchangers are generally not feasible for service with high yield stress slurries because of low heat transfer rates. It is more appropriate to heat the slurry by direct contact, typically with steam as the heating medium. Although having a long and successful history, direct-contact heat transfer to aqueous slurries has been used without the support of pilot plant research. This paper provides results of the needed research, the work being done at a scale large enough to enable direct scale up to commercial operations. A pilot plant heater was constructed and tested to develop an understanding of the slurry heating process and to ensure that commercial scale heaters were appropriately sized.INTRODUCTIONPressure Leaching OperationsPressure leaching operations are often used to oxidise sulphide gold ores, or for extraction of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores with sulphuric acid. Where there is sufficient sulphur available, the exothermic pressure oxidation reactions can be self sustaining at temperatures as high as 225 ºC, without having to preheat the feed slurry. At lower sulphur levels, slurry preheating is required. This is typically achieved by utilising the flash steam released from the slurry letdown stages and contacting this directly with cold incoming slurry ahead of the autoclave. The vessels where this slurry-steam contact is made are known as heaters or condensers, with the number of pre-heat stages varying, depending on how much heat is evolved in the oxidation reaction (Mason, 1990).In nickel laterite pressure acid leaching processes, which operate between 245 and 270 ºC, the only significant exothermic reactions are those associated with dilution of sulphuric acid in the leach. As a consequence, slurry preheating with flash steam is always used commercially. In practice the number of flash steam preheating stages required varies from 1 to 3, driven by a number of factors, including other uses for flash steam and the upper temperature limit at which preheated slurry can be pumped. A diagram of a typical pressure acid leach train is shown in Figure 1.For pressure acid leaching operations and at low sulphur levels in pressure oxidation, boiler generated direct steam addition to the autoclave is required to sustain the reaction temperature. For this reason it is imperative that the flash steam – slurry heat transfer is efficient and the slurry temperature approaches that of the flash steam closely."

"CANMET’s Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories have developed the Canadian Mining Technology Network (CMT-Net), a website to provide industry with up to date information on technologies in several areas. This paper gives background on the Mineral and Metal Processing sector, describes the steps leading to the development of the websites strategy and gives a tour of CMT-Net. IntroductionThe government of Canada is developing a strategy aimed at fostering the development of value-added activities in the area of mineral and metal processing (MMP). Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Industry Canada will partner in delivering on this strategy. Instrumental in defining the main thrusts of the value-added strategy was a series of consultations held across Canada with representatives of companies and organizations active in the sector. The objective of the consultations was to identify barriers to the development of activities which add value in the sector, as well as point to positive factors.Following the consultations, a discussion paper was produced, “From Mineral Resources to Manufactured Products: Towards a Value- Added Mineral and Metal Strategy for Canada” (Natural Resources Canada, 1998). The paper reviews the sector’s structure and main statistical information, lists some of the positive factors and barriers to value-added activities and defines a new partnership between industry and government that will lead to more valueadded activities. The main objective of the paper is to serve as a discussion document between stakeholders during the development of the strategy."

"The planning and design of mining panels in the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc., Lanigan Division mine Block B involved a number of investigative techniques. The techniques utilized to gain insight into the viability of mining included2-D and 3-D seismic surveys, longhole drilling, exploration wells, photo lineament, magnetic and gravity surveys, and actual room excavation.IntroductionPotash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS) owns and operates four potash mines in the province of Saskatchewan. The Lanigan Division mine is located 110 Ian east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, near the town of Lanigan.The Lanigan Mine commenced production in August 1968under the ownership or Alwinsal Potash of Canada Limited. The mine was purchased by PCS in 1977.Lanigan Division's productive capacity is 3.4 million tonnes of product per year. Ore is extracted from the "" B"" zone or Layer III or the Patience Lake member of the Prairie Evaporite, more than 1000m below surface . The Patience Lake member (approximately 20 m thick) consists of potash interbedded with salt. The average run-of-mine ore grade is 21070 K20 (Fig. I).The mine was initially developed using the room-and-pillar technique. Improvements in mining resulted in the use or extensible conveyors in long panel rooms."

Aircraft utilization, weather and cost data are given for three separate projects north of the sixtieth parallel in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. These operations, carried out by helicopter-equipped geological and prospecting parties, have cost $24 to $30 per square mile, depending principally on the distance from the base. They provide adequate surface exploration of areas with 40 to 50 per cent rock outcrop. A good one-inch-to-one-mile geological map can be made. T HE exploration of the Canadian northland has been given increasing attention by the mining industry during recent years. In many cases, the initial problem is to make an adequate reconnaissance of a large area where existing geological information is meagre. The Geological Survey of Canada pioneered the use of helicopter-equipped geological parties for mapping at a scale of eight miles to the inch.

"Since the late 1990s, increased prevalence of severe lung disease among US coal miners has been observed, particularly in central Appalachia where thin-seam mining is prevalent. While respirable silica exposures have been implicated in many cases, the available dust monitoring data from mines shows no explanatory trends. One possible factor could be differences in the relative toxicity of silica particles based on their surface condition. Previous research has indicated that particles with occluded surfaces (e.g., by a thin layer of clay) may be less toxic than those with non-occluded surfaces. However, this dust characteristic has not been investigated before now in central Appalachian mines. In the present study, 18 respirable dust samples from seven central Appalachian mines and two northern Appalachian mines were analyzed to assess the relative occurrence of surface-occluded silica. Results showed that the dust from central Appalachian mines actually had higher fractions of occluded silica, which may be due to extraction of large amounts of rock strata along with the coal. However, the central Appalachian mines also more silica particles overall (i.e., occluded + non-occluded) in terms of total number percentage of respirable particles.INTRODUCTIONResurgence of occupational lung disease among US coal miners, especially in the central Appalachian region, has been observed since the late 1990’s (Gibson, 2016; Zosky et al., 2016; Suarthana et al., 2011; Gamble et al., 2011; Antao et al., 2005; Attfield & Sexias, 1995). In addition to increased prevalence of simple Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”), the prevalence of severe and rapidly progressive disease has risen dramatically (Almberg et al., 2018; Blackley et al., 2018a, 2018b, 2016, 2014; Graber et al., 2017; Cohen et al., 2016). While exposures to respirable silica have long been known to cause or play a role in diseases such as silicosis or progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is conventionally considered as the most advanced form of CWP, it is unclear whether silica is the only culprit in the recent outbreak of severe disease. Indeed, as disease rates have risen, both total respirable dust and silica concentrations generally appear to have declined since the late 1980s, based on regulatory monitoring data in the most affected mining districts (i.e., MSHA coal Districts 4, 5 and 12, which cover central WV, eastern KY and southwestern VA, and southern WV, respectively) (Figure 1). Of course, the latency of disease can vary and may be or more 10 years, but many of the most recent cases are likely to have resulted from exposures that occurred since the late 1980s."

"The Ontario Division of Inca Metals Company, a Unit of Inca Limited, operates eleven mines, four mills, three refineries, one smelter and one iron ore recovery plant. All but one mine, mill and refinery are located within a fifty kilometer radius of Sudbury, Ontario. A mine-mill complex is located some 100 kilometers west of Thunder Bay on the shore of Lake Shebandowan and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne.During the past 10 years the use of recycled water in our milling operations has increased to more than 95% at each mill. This high degree of water reuse has reduced the (a) need for fresh water and (b) the contaminant level of the downstream aquatic environment. The aggregating of effluents in a common receptor provides a process water having a consistent quality thereby minimizing upsets in mill metallurgy while concurrently improving the operating economies and the downstream aquatic environment."

Phelps Dodge introduced a process improvement model known as Quest for Zero in 2001. In 2004, the focus of Quest for Zero shifted from corporate-led initiatives to projects led by site personnel. The Hydrometallurgical Division at Morenci focused on two (2) significant process improvements: reducing electrolyte bleed and organic losses. In September 2004, Morenci kicked off a bleed reduction project to reduce electrolyte bleed by 45%. By the end 2005, electrolyte bleed was reduced by 55% through understanding and reduction of variance. Significant process changes made during this time period include changes in acid-addition strategy, reduction of uncontrolled bleed, and optimization of bleed placement. In April 2005, the organic reduction project began with the goal of reducing losses by 15%. Operational improvements during this project included improved organic recovery systems, mixer speed optimization, and picket fence installation. By the end 2005, this project reduced organic losses by 35% and current losses are 48% lower than at the start of the project. These projects and smaller Questfor Zero projects have resulted in sustainable annualized savings of $13 million in Morenci hydrometallurgical operations. Through the use of Six Sigma tools, process variances can be controlled and reduced.
