"AbstractThe basic intention of this paper is to present, from a practical viewpoint, a thorough outline of all the sound and accepted principles connected with attaining satisfactory rope performance from multi-rope friction winders.In order to emphasize the importance of some aspects of rope maintenance, a limited amount of hoist rope theory has been included, a s it is felt that without this, some of the more critical, but nevertheless practical, aspects would perhaps pass without full appreciation of their individual merit.It is very much appreciated that many of the maintenance topics and practices discussed herein are already being observed with a high degree of skill among those already involved in modern friction winding. The hope is expressed, however, that the paper will be of additional assistance, and of particular help in introducing sound maintenance principles to those who are moving into this field of operation for the first time.Hoist RopesWITH a multi-rope friction winder system, structural upset within the hoist rope's cross section can occur if the ropes slip in the drum treads. This upset will usually appear at either end of the rope at the tangent point of the drum or deflection sheave with the respective conveyance in the normal uppermost position. This slipping action on the drum causes the outer cover of a Full Locked Coil or the strands of a stranded rope to shift, leading to structural upset. The result very often means that the ropes have to be withdrawn from service before completing their maximum service potential.The cause of any rope slipping in its tread can be associated with a discrepancy in tension of that rope between one side of the drum and the other."

The paper describes the current density increase within the last 150 years. From the beginning in 1885 at 30 A/m² up to the highest used current densities nowadays at 420 A/m² towards future pathways were even 1000 A/m² can be achievable. A short tour through history will highlight the milestones of the process of electrolytic refining of copper. Besides the improvement of the existing technology, the biggest changes leading to higher possible current densities are linked to the introduction of the ISA stainless steel plates and the introduction of the parallel flow principle. Furthermore, the parameters influencing the limitations regarding current density and therefore the practical used current density as well as the influence from the chemical composition of the electrolyte is discussed. Finally, the possibility of further increasing the current densities by enhancing the relative movement between electrolyte and electrode will give an outlook about the future of the copper electrolysis process. INTRODUCTION The current density is the most important characteristic to describe the productivity of a copper refining electrolysis besides the characteristic number for the electrical efficiency. Over the last 150 years, current density has risen from a few amperes per square meter to over 400 A/m² without any significant change in the principle of electrolytic refining. This increase in current density is documented exemplary by the electrolysis of Montanwerke Brixlegg in Austria (Brixlegg, 1963, 2013). The very beginning of the technology of electrolytic refining of copper was first patented in England by James Elkington in 1865 and the first electrolytic copper refinery was built in Newark, New Jersey, in 1883 (Armstrong, 1999). The secondary smelter Montanwerke Brixlegg, Austria, has been operating an electrolysis plant since 1884. In 1988, the third "Mount Isa" electrolysis plant worldwide and the first in Europe was put into operation in Brixlegg. Since 2010, the so-called high-current electrolysis (parallel flow METTOP-BRX Technology) with a current density of approx. 400 A/m² has been operated in half of the electrolysis process.

The La Ronge. Kisseynew, Glennie Lake and Flin Flon domains. the main focu for gold exploration in the southeast part of the Saskatchewan Shield, were subject to continental glacial ice advances from the northeast during the Quaternary. Based on forty-four auger hole along with surficial mapping, the general Quaternary stratigraphy in this area is observed to be composed of a lower till unit , an overlying stratified unit of glaciofluvial sand and gravel and/or a glaciolacustrine silt-clay unit. an upper till. and an upper tratified unit. The lower till is commonly found throughout the geological domains except where it has been eroded in glaciofluvial or fluvial channels. Glacial Lake Agassiz fo rmerly covered most of these prospective domains. The lacustrine deposits associated with the lake impede surficial geochemical surveys including soil. lake sediment. and biogeochemical surveys. The approximate extent of clay cover can be predicted from beach elevations. For instance. in the Waddy Lake area. clay i not known to occur above about 1,400 feet (425 m) elevation. Exploration techniques are hampered by clay in at least one third of the volcanic belt. Thi s influence is indicated by the fact that nearly all gold prospect found to date are located above 1,400 feet (425 m) while the area of clay cover is vi rtually unexplored. The upper till i related to a minor ice readvance. This till is the medium often sampled during soil surveys in the area . lts value as a geochemical ampling medium is dependent on the extent of erosional contact with bedrock highs on the lower till. Those areas which are relatively free of lacustrine and fluvial deposits are those where surface geochemical methods work best. In the Waddy Lake volcanic belt approximately 25-50% of the area may be suitable for surficial surveys. The area of the Star Lake prospect occurs above the 1,500 foot (460 m) elevation and was not covered by Lake Agas iz. The effectivene of till sampling as a surface sampling medium was tested in those areas above the clay level. Till orientat ion surveys were carried out at the Star Lake property and the Tower Lake prospect (Waddy Lake area) within the La Ronge Domain . Gold grain counts and analy es of heavy mineral concent rate from 7 kg surface ti ll samples were used to delineate dispersion trains down-ice from mineralization. "Most of the lode and placer gold production in the Canadian Cordillera has been derived from mines and placers in the Intermontane and Omineca belts. Gold has been produced from rocks of Precambrian to Eocene age, but the preferred host environment contains Upper Paleozoic to Upper Jurassic eugeosynclinal or arc-type sedimentary and volcanic rocks adjacent to plutonic complexes which have a wide variety in both size and composition. Auriferous quartz lodes occur in fissures and shear zones which are commonly subsidiary to strong fault zones. In common with most vein-type deposits, structural complexities are an essential part of the mine environment.Gold production from the Canadian Cordillera to the end of 1978 totals 35.0 million ounces, of which 47 per cent has been produced from placer mining, principally in the Klondike and Cariboo districts. The balance has been derived from lode gold (80 per cent) and base metal (20 per cent) mines.Gold reserves in producing mines and deposits committed for production as of January 1, 1978 were 87.4 tons, or 21.6 per cent of total Canadian gold reserves contained in all types of deposits. Although more than 100 lode mines have operated in the Canadian Cordillera since the turn of the last century, over 75 per cent of the lode gold produced by 1978 was recovered from five mining camps, namely the Rossland, Hedley, Bridge River, Premier and Barkerville.The average grade of the principal producers in these camps was about 0.45 ounce of gold per ton. Individual camps yielded from 3 to 8 million tons during their operating lives, which varied from 28 to 43 years. The last of these mines ceased operating in 1971.Most of the total lode gold production has been derived from quartz veins, frequently with associated carbonate and ankerite, occupying fractured and faulted zones in Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks closely associated with a variety of intrusions. A review of the literature suggests that several deposits may have evolved by remobilization of ore constituents from earlier concordant gold-bearing formations. The principal metallic minerals in the deposits are native gold, electrum, tellurides, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite.As the mineralogy suggests, many of the Cordilleran lode gold deposits have yielded important co-products or byproducts, including silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and tungsten. Significant by-product gold production has also been derived from porphyry copper, volcanogenic, replacement and pyrometasomatic deposits, particularly in recent years.No major lode gold discovery has been made in the past 67 years, although little exploration activity for gold has taken place during the last 30 years. Several relatively small lode gold and gold replacement deposits have been discovered in recent years, either serendipitously (Chappelle) or on very low initial budgets (Northair and Carolin). Based on well-established precedents, one or more of these may eventually be developed into a large mine.A detailed study of the Canadian Cordillera gold deposits based on recent genetic models could prove rewarding, not only in up-dating information on their origin and depositional characteristics, but in stimulating the search for undiscovered gold deposits, in the Cordillera and other parts of Canada."

"The coals of the Sydney and Pictou coalfields are generally classed as high volatile ""A "" and medium volatile bituminous coals but there are significant differences within and even beyond this rank. These are related to the observation that the coalification in eastern Canada is essentially post-deformational, resulting in a general increase of rank with depth in individual seams.Exploration drilling in the Sydney coalfield has shown that the rank increases offshore to M. V. bituminous at mineable depths and in the Pictou field to L. V. bituminous coal. There is also a marked easterly shift in rank within one seam at the same depth at Sydney, with the result that M. V. coal will be reached sooner in the Donkin Reserve area (at 700 m depth) than in the Lingan-No , 26 Reserve area (at 900 m depth). These rank changes are important for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke as shown with coke stability predictions based on petrographic analyses. The L. V. coal of the Pictou field can be used for blending purposes and is the only known L. V. deposit of mineable thickness in eastern Canada.In addition, the vertical rank changes between seams have been studied in ten boreholes. They are not constant within the confines of the Sydney coalfield. Four separate areas can be recognized, each with different coalification gradients, which can be related to changes in the paleogeothermal gradients . Variations of 2.5 degrees to 6. 7 degrees CI IOO m are indicated and geological causes for these changes are suggested.IntroductionThe Sydney coalfield is the largest and most important field in eastern Can ad a, and although it has been in production some 200 years, the remaining ""demonstrated "" resources of 1.6 billion metric tons can extend its production capability for at least another 100 years. All coals mined are high volatile "" A"" bituminous and have been used for both thermal and metallurgical purposes. For the latter rank variations even of a minor scale are of critical importance for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke.The significance at the present time of the Pictou coalfield, which has only modest remaining "" demonstrated"" resources of 60 million metric ton s, lies in the discovery in 1975 of a 14-million-ton deposit of low volatile bituminous coal. It is the only known low-volatile coal in eastern Canada and is suitable for use as a blend for metallurgical coal. As such, it could supply the Sydney coke ovens for a period of 30 years at the current rate o f coke production and replace imported American low volatile coal.Consequently, coal rank studies of the Sydney and Pictou fields are important not only from a geological point of view, but also because of economic considerations."

Kumtor Gold Company (KGC) currently operates the 500,000 tonnes per day Kumtor open pit gold mine located in the Issyk-Kul region of the Kyrgyz Republic at an elevation of more than 4,000 m. To supplement the open-pit mill feed with high grade underground ore from outside the current pit limits, KGC started pre-production design and development of the underground mine for the SB ore zone in late 2006. The initial phase of pre-production development consists of exploration and haulage declines which, upon completion, will provide ventilation and access to the underground mine. Design and construction of these declines presented many challenges to the project team considering the mines unique location at high altitude, the limited experience with Western underground mining techniques in the Kyrgyz Republic, and the impact of the nearby Davydov glacier and resultant ground conditions. Completion of the exploration and haulage declines was undertaken jointly by KGC and mine contractor, J.S. Redpath Limited (Redpath). The initial phase of development including several ground falls provided detailed information on geotechnical ground types and conditions that were useful in determining the overall mine design and methodology for production. This paper covers the various aspects of the design and construction process of developing the declines under the glacier, minimizing the likelihood of further ground falls, and the journey of both KGC and Redpath which led to the successful breakthrough between the declines on 01 July 2012.

Outokumpu Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting is currently in operation in two smelters, a third one is under construction and a fourth one is in the design phase. The two smelters in operation are the Glogow 2 smelter of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. in Poland and the Olympic Dam smelter of BHP Billiton in Australia. The Outokumpu Direct-to-Blister smelter of Konkola Copper Mines Plc. in Zambia is under construction and the new smelter of Glogow 1 is under design and waiting for final go-ahead decision. Additionally, the Garfield smelter of Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. makes blister copper out of matte in a Flash Converting furnace. A similar operation is under construction for Y anggu Xiangguang Copper Co. in China. The slag cleaning process, which is needed to clean the slag of the Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting Furnace, has different requirements depending on the feed to the flash furnace. These differences are discussed in the paper. The differences between the processes and slag produced are discussed as well as the metallurgical requirements for slag cleaning. The Direct-to-Blister process, where the blister copper is produced directly from concentrate in one step, requires at least a partial treatment of the slag in an electric slag cleaning furnace. The existing impurities determine the specific requirements of the actual cleaning process. The different processes are discussed in the paper. The newest developments of Outokumpu Technology Oy for electric slag cleaning furnace design are presented as well as the characteristics which the furnace shape gives to the process.

In this investigation some preliminary results are reported about the electrochemical oxidation of CO using goldbased encapsulated nanoparticles grafted on conducting substrate. The investigation has been planned in four steps: 1. production of Au(111) substrate and modification with self assembled monolayers; 2. synthesis and embedding of nanoparticles; 3. grafting of encapsulated nanoparticles on electrode substrates; 4. investigation of CO electroxidation on the modified electrode. The systems were characterized by means of various techniques (spectroscopic, microscopic, and electrochemical methods), obtaining information about SAM's structure and morphology, size and composition of nanoparticles and electrochemical behavior of modified electrodes.

The deterioration of highway and bridge infrastructure has received considerable attention in recent years because of the billions of dollars needed for repair and rehabilitation. A major factor contributing to this problem is the corrosion of steel reinforcement. Reinforcing steels with good corrosion resistance and relatively low price are therefore essential for maintenance, cost reduction and service-life extension of the steel-reinforced structures. This article describes the development of low-alloying steels that offers good corrosion resistance with reasonably low cost. Topics include steel microstructures, mechanical properties, corrosion performance, industrial applications and economic aspects.

"In the last few decades, microwave energy has been widely employed in food processing, rubber and plastics curing, and in ceramic sintering. Recently, the application of micro waves as an energy source in extractive metallurgy has received considerable attention from a number of researchers. During the period from the mid-1960s to about 1988, the majority of the research was focussed on the behaviour of materials in microwave radiation. These research activities will continue to be important, since fundamental data on the interaction of microwaves with materials are vital for the successful application of the technology. Since1990, a number of potential applications of microwave processing have been investigated.These include: pretreatment of ores and concentrates, leaching, reduction, preheating of refractories, heating of slags and waste treatment. In this paper, the interaction of micro -waves with materials of interest in extractive metallurgy are reviewed and potential applications are discussed.IntroductionMicrowaves were first used in 1946 for the heating of materials, shortly after radar equipment was invented during the second world war. It was evident that microwaves were very effective for heating water and the technology was quickly adopted for drying and cooking. Since the introduction of the first microwave oven by Raytheon in 1952, many millions of domestic microwave ovens have been sold annually (National Research Council,1994; Atomic Energy of Canada and Voss Associates Engineering, 1990).In extractive metallurgy, microwaves are in the early stages of development (National Research Council, 1994; Atomic Energy of Canada and Voss Associates, 1990; McGill and Walkiewicz, 1987; Bradhurst and Worner, 1990;Peng et al., 1993). However, there are several reasons for the growing interest in the use of this technology in the field of metals extraction. These include the following potential advantages of microwaves: (1) rapid and selective heating of materials; (2) reactions can be catalyzed because the heating occurs on a molecular or atomic level; (3) clean and controllable energy source; (4) the gas volume is reduced and the atmosphere can be controlled as there are no gaseous combustion products; (5) the material is heated internally in comparison to external heating with conventional methods; (6)the temperature of the refractory can be minimized; and (7) the working environment is improved."

The Ambatovy Joint Venture comprises an operating lateritic nickel mine, ore slurry pipeline, pressure acid leach plant and nickel refinery in Madagascar. The hydrometallurgical process selected by Sherritt for treatment of the Ambatovy ore is a long-term, sustainable approach to producing nickel. Sulphur, used to prepare hydrogen sulphide, which is used to produce mixed sulphide intermediate, is recovered in the refinery as ammonium sulphate fertilizer. Additional sulphur is used to generate sulphuric acid for treatment of the ore in the high pressure acid leach (HPAL) step; fossil fuel consumption is minimized by using the heat generated from the exothermic reaction between sulphur and oxygen in the acid plant to produce power and steam. Steam consumption is minimized by design of efficient flashing and preheat systems for HPAL, while the high temperature of the HPAL step serves to minimize acid consumption. Fossil fuel consumption by the operation as a whole is further minimized by locating the leach plant and refinery near the port of Toamasina and utilizing a 220 km slurry pipeline to transport ore from the mine to the leach plant. In addition, Ambatovy has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability programs such as the biodiversity management program at the mine and local procurement in Madagascar. In this paper, the hydrometallurgical process for nickel and cobalt recovery from Ambatovy ore is described, along with highlights of Ambatovy’s approach to sustainability in Madagascar.

Sulfate balance control is a common problem for zinc plants. Roast-leach-electrowin plants are mostly concerned with the over-generation of sulfates while for the HudBay direct leach plant both extremes are possible including potential necessity to buy sulfuric acid to replenish a sulfate-depleted circuit, which makes the problem doubly important. Quantitative methods were applied at the HudBay plant to analyze sulfate generation/depletion based on a local sulfur balance and sulfate extraction calculation in the leach circuit, using a Pb-tie method. Main factors were established influencing sulfate generation/depletion, including the critical role of Pb and pyrite. Regression analysis proved to be effective and allowed the quantitative prediction of Pb concentrations necessary to reach the equilibrium for the sulfate balance. This in turn provided a firm basis for a sulfate-control strategy realized through concentrate blend correction, which allowed the plant to fine-tune sulfate generation/depletion effectively reducing economic consequences of excessive/deficient sulfate generation.

Mineralogical studies and concentration tests were conducted on samples from an oolitic iron deposit from the Peace River district in Alberta to determine what concentrate grades and metal recoveries could be obtained. The samples assayed 32 to 37 wt. % Fe, and consisted of goethite, nontronite, ferruginous opal, siderite , quartz, amorphous phosphate and illite . Flotation with fatty acids yielded the best over-all results. A flotation concentrate from a composite sample of the iron horizon assayed, by weight, 43.0% Fe, 12.3% SiO2 , 1.9% CaD, 0.9% MgO, 4.5% Al2O3 and 2.0% P2O5 and lost 17.2% on ignition, for an iron recovery of 48.8% and a silica rejection of 80%. Particles for heap leaching in conventional circuits are prepared using Cone crushers. Cone crushers are used to crush the ore to the size range between 12-25 mm for heap leaching operations. Leaching from these relatively coarse particles occurs only at the surface and in subsurface regions, which are accessible from the surface by cracks and pores. Since leaching is active in accessible areas, the method of comminution that forms multiple cracks and pores would offer an advantage for heap leach. An investigation was performed in this study to assess if the HPGR forms more cracks and pores than a Cone crusher. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to characterize the degree of cracks and pores formed by these two comminution devices that can be used for heap leaching feed preparation. In order to compare the effect of the comminution method on crack network generation, a bulk sample of the zinc ore was crushed by the HPGR at three different pressure settings (45, 95 and 120 bar), the sample ore was also crushed with a Cone crusher for comparison purposes. Products from the Cone crusher and HPGR experiment were then screened into five size fractions ((-25 +19), (-19+16), (-16+9.5), (-9.5+5), (-5+4.75) mm), Subsamples from the ((-25 +19), (-16+9.5), (-5+4.75) mm) size fractions were analysed. The spatial distribution of the crack network of sphalerite particles was characterized using a highresolution industrial X-ray CT system. This paper describes the use of image analysis techniques including image segmentation, which uses a combination of thresholding and other methods to characterize and quantify crack and mineral dissemination in the sphalerite particles after comminution with the HPGR and Cone crusher. The results are validated with those obtained using traditional techniques such as physical gas (with N2) adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM and QEMSCAN.

Last year our sales were US$5.7 billion and our total production amounted to 47 million carats which means a 40% global market share. For the Kyoto buffs in the audience, the company consumes 66 million cubic metres of water per annum, 210 million litres of hydrocarbon fuel and 1,600 GWh of electricity. "It has been shown that the economics of the hydrometallurgy of a rare earth process depend upon the amount of acid needed to extract the metal per unit mass of the ore. In this paper, we show how to save a significant amount of acid treating a low grade ferrocarbonatite and extracting +99% constituent REEs. In order to save the acid, the alkali earth metals, originated from gangue minerals were removed prior to REE leaching. Moreover, the operating conditions of leaching reactor are optimized to leave iron behind and to leach REE selectively and effectively. Consequently, the hydrochloric acid consumption per ton of ore drops significantly compared to other processes.INTRODUCTIONThe viability of an extractive metallurgy process of rare earth elements (REEs) to produce an intermediate mixed concentrate depends upon a low-cost simple flowsheet (Bogner, 2014). It has been known that regardless of the mineral, the acid consumption is intimately associated with the operational cost (OPEX) of any REE project, particularly when the initial REE grade is low. Besides acid, the other reagents consumed in the process impact the OPEX. This makes minimizing acid consumption in an REE method a critical priority. The acid consumption in different projects has been reported to be equivalent of 100 kg to 1000 kg HCl (100%) per tonne of ore (Average: 500 kg/t HCl 100%) (Bogner, 2014). This value is strongly correlated with the grade of REE in the ore and therefore in the pre-concentrate.Previously, it has been stated that the Montviel flotation concentrate requires about 300 kg HCl (100%)/t ore to attain +99% REE recoveries using direct leaching (Yu, Verbaan, Pearse and Britt 2013). Hence, for an ore feed rate of 2500 t/d ROM, a large acid production plant (744 t/d HCl 100%) would be required for acid leaching of such concentrate. The equivalent Chlor-alkali plant is estimated to cost M$ 150 (CAPEX) and may require 100 MW power. Therefore, there is a necessity to improve the extractive hydrometallurgy and to reduce the acid consumption significantly."

The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia?s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15,000 t/a magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China, Site construction commenced in February 2005 with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005, Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005, Since that time ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken, This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

"The electrolytic tankhouse at CCR was recognized by management as lagging behind modem refineries in terms of productivity, energy efficiency and controls. The operation was also burdened by high maintenance costs of cells, floors and electrolyte recirculation systems.A bench marking program was started in 1986 to evaluate processes and other technology by visiting major copper refineries in North America, Europe and Japan. The basic principles necessary to optimize the operation were defined, and a program calledCCR 2000 was prepared for approval of the necessary capital investments.This paper describes the results obtained to date and outlines the remaining work to complete the modernization program, in particular, the control of electrolytes, the elimination of the Baltimore groove and studies to modernize the stripping operation or adopt permanent cathode technology.IntroductionThe CCR Refinery of Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining (Noranda Minerals Inc.) , in Montreal East, is one of the world 's largest custom copper and precious metal refineries with a capacity to refine 350000 tonnes of copper per year. The silver refinery, which treats the copper tankhouse anode slime, foreign slime and precious metal ingots, produces 800 000 kg of silver, 26 000 kg of gold and 3800 kg of platinum-palladium concentrate annually. Copper anodes are received from the Horne Smelter at Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Mines Gaspe Division in Murdochville, Quebec. CCR also refines anodes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. in FIin Flon, Manitoba, and remelts anode scrap along with blister and purchased copper scrap ."
