According to the analysis of 126 mine gushing records and the relevant water supply and hydrogeologic condition, the gush can be classified into eight types;cave type,collapse -column. type, subterranean stream type, fault zone type, contact zone type, upper plate type, bottom heaving type and surface water invasion type. The formulae for counting the peak discharge of gushing point are further put forward in this paper.

The development, piloting and engineering design of an innovative water treatment system for process water produced by a uranium mine mill are described. The process incorporates lime/carbonate softening (Stage 1), reverse osmosis (Stage 2) and biopolishing (Stage 3) to produce water of quality suitable for release to the receiving environment. Comprehensive performance data are presented for each stage. The unique features of the proposed process are: recycle of the lime/CO2 softening sludge to the uranium mill as a neutralant; potential use of power station off-gas for carbonation; and the potential recovery and recycle of ammonia from the RO reject stream.

Underground mechanized excavation in New Zealand has become more commonplace in civil and mining applications during the last three years. At one stage up to seven Dosco Road- header machines were being used on different projects around the country. The Huntly West Mine Drifts inclined at one in four were by far the most severe grade conditions that the machines were subjected to; however, other operations posed their own particular problems for the machines. Two major interrelated factors became evident as soon as the machines commenced at Huntly. These were traction problems on the grade and control of water, particularly on the invert.

Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. The purpose of this paper is to explain the basic structure of how minerals are marketed, whilst highlighting the essential factors that mine management needs to be confident are incorporated into a mineÆs marketing strategy. The traditional mine management approach to marketing has been to defer its scrutiny to the marketing manager and take a largely passive role. It is this paperÆs assertion that mine management needs to become more proactive and provide greater strategic input into the marketing process. Irrespective of what mineral your mine produces, the key marketing principles remain constant and need to be understood and managed to extract the full benefit on behalf of the mining asset. From a mine management perspective, success is ultimately linked to understanding these marketing principles and ensuring that they are effectively addressed by your mineÆs marketing strategy. This paper will unashamedly attempt to simplify marketing by explaining how the basic fundamentals of supply and demand set market direction, the importance of a comprehensive marketing strategy, the importance of customer relationships and how contracts and prices are typically negotiated. This paper will use examples from the metallurgical coal (met coal) industry to highlight these points. The paper will also provide a template for developing the critical mine interaction that needs to exist between the marketing department and management to develop a æwhole of mineÆ approach to marketing. It is this core group that will be strategically responsible for delivering the commitments your mine has made to your customers. For mine management not to be actively involved in this process puts at æriskÆ the hard won production and cost efficiencies achieved at your mine and ignores the opportunity to maximise your current and future revenue streams. And whilst this paper recognises that is arguably unreasonable for mine management to become æmarketing expertsÆ, it also argues that it is unreasonable for a mine management to divorce themselves from the process.

In a coal mine there are many substances capable of ignition under certain circumstances, which can be placed in the following groups: ordinary combustible solids, dusts, liquids and vapours, gases, metals and plastics. There are many factors influencing ignition, including temperature, minimum ignition energy, particle size, explosion pressure level, rate of pressure rise, specific energy content and also explosive limit. Not all are applicable in every case. Frictional ignition of methane is an accident statistic of increasing concern and is considered in some detail. Practical measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of frictional ignitions are considered, and also possible ways of ignition suppression.

Like almost any other 19th century mining area, the West Coast saw its 20th century scrapping era when machinery which had been installed in seemingly inaccessible places was somehow dragged out again. Fortunately there were some spots so remote that they defied even the most zealous of these pioneering recyclers. One of these was Big River, a mining locality in a rugged landscape straddling the headwaters of the Grey and Inangahua rivers. As a result there remains an internationally important collection of mining equipment including a poppet head, two steam winding engines, a pair of boilers, part of an aerial cableway with its loading system, and remnants of a stamp battery along with its associated gold smelter, cyanide tanks and zinc boxes. There are also assorted building remains associated with 60 years of mining and settlement. Since their abandonment in 1942, these relics have all somehow survived a further half century in a far from favourable climate with two or three metres of rain a year, frequent snowfalls and hot summer temperatures. The rate of decay during the past few years has been alarming.

The difficulty of successfully imple menting a landscape policy is almost incom- prehensible. Landscape design is recognised as an essential component in the integration of engineering and architectural projects into the landscape, but the factors which prevent the achievement of a successful result are rarely recognised or assessed. In many cases these prohibiting factors are due to a lack of understanding of the effect of major planning decisions on the existing landscape, the importance of the landscape plan and the significance of appro- priate specified techniques to prevent un- necessary damage and to ensure retention of existing vegetation in a healthy condition. The role of the landscape architect in incorporating new land uses into the landscape provides the background against which factors which inhibit policy achievement can be con- sidered.

Efficient performance of pulp lifters to discharge ground rock is critical to the effective performance of SAG and AG mills. The paper covers developments in the design of pulp lifters and associated grates, of both conventional straight-radial and curved types, and of the inner discharge cone. Issues covered include the discharge performance of both the slurry and rock components of the discharge, reverse flow back into the mill through open grates and backflow down the pulp lifters of material that fails to discharge from the mill. The design experience is interpreted in the light of developments in particle flow modelling of the flow of charge in pulp lifters.

A brief introduction is given of the scale and of some special features of South African gold mining; it is noted that great depth of mining and narrowness of the reefs, and hardness and abrasiveness of the rock are the main sources of the problems of the industry. The most inhibiting problems are: Excessive rock pressure occcurring in conjunction with rockbursts, hot and humid working places due to high virgin rock temperature and auto-compression of the air, and low level of productivity. Conventional solutions applied ordinarily in mining do not promise to eliminate, or even alleviate, these difficulties.

GeoScience Victoria has completed quantitative assessments of undiscovered gold endowment in the northern parts of the Bendigo and Stawell Zones. The under cover area in the Bendigo Zone (10 000 km2) is likely to contain approximately 1000 t and at least 290 t of gold in undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold deposits. For the under cover area in the Stawell Zone (30 000 km2), the estimates are approximately 1200 t and at least 200 t of undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold. Industry and Government is littered with computer systems which suffered massive cost overruns in their production and which do not fully meet the expectations and needs of their users. There are many in the computing business who caution that cost overruns of 100% are to be expected and who counsel seriously against accepting an implementation date as being realistic. System development methodologies and "Spectrum" is an example, have been designed to control systems development so the cost and time overruns are prevented. While some success has been claimed, our experience and information from other users indicates that this control is illusory, the first estimates of cost and time are inflated by the control system methodology, and the methodology itself can bury the original system.

This paper covers period from 1973 through to 1988 and the mines of West Coast Mines, Elur Mine, North Mine and Risdon Zinc Smelter, now all part of the Pasminco Group. During this period, optimisation started with one mine (West Coast Mines) producing four Product concentrates with constant steady feed to the smelter and progressed to three mines producing eight products and a smelter varying feed inputs to maximise benefits. The initial optimisation was done manually using a desk top calculator and hand drawn graphs. This ultimately advanced to the use of PC plus linear programming software and spreadsheet generating relevant graphics. The financial benefits were achieved with no capital expenditure and increased from an initial $0.5 to $1.0 M/year (1973 $'s) to $5 to $10 M/year (1988 $'s).
