The use of a partial secondary crushing circuit provides a flexible way to optimise existing SAG comminution circuits limited by rock competency or enables optimal processing of an ore through second hand equipment not specifically selected for that ore. This paper details the process involved in designing a partial secondary crushing circuit using the recent installation at Mt Rawdon Gold Mine in Queensland as an example.

The Far Fanning gold deposit is situated 60 kilometres south-west of Townsville (Fig. 1). Previous recorded production is 3756 tonnes returning about 1600 ounces of gold. This has been taken from surface and shallow underground workings- scattered over the strike length of the deposit of 1700 metres. The main production period was from 1895 to 1908.Previous exploration involving extensive trenching and sampling has been: carried out intermittently. since the 1930's, by Gold Mines of Australia (1932), Placer (1974), Anaconda (1975), Marathon (1980-8-1), Aberfoyle (1981-82), and The Northern Queensland Company (NQC) (1983-present).In 1980 Marathon undertook an extensive drilling programme to test the oxidised mineralisation. Over 200 percussion holes and- 7 diamond holes were drilled along traverse lines spaced 29 to 103 metres apart covering a strike length of around 1800 metres.

The Ok Tedi open pit mine will have final wall heights in excess of 750m. The behaviour of these excavated slopes will be influenced by the presence of numerous defects. This paper discusses the identification of possible failure mechanisms within the pit walls based on mapped fault and joint data. Results from analyses using these data have formed the basis for the ultimate pit design.

Oaky Creek Coal Pty Ltd. currently mines high quality coking coal from both underground and open cut operations at its Oaky Creek Mine. Coal is transported by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal south of Mackay and to the Gladstone Coal Terminal. Oaky No.1 Underground Mine, Open Cut and Highwall Mine have concentrated on seams from the German Creek Formation, one of the major productive coal measure formations in the Bowen Basin Coalfields. THE MORWELL BROWN COAL DEPOSITSTHIS deposits of brown coal in the neighbourhood of Morwell, are of tertiary age, and are represented on several horizons, but, owing to lack of evidence, the exact age cannot be fixed definitely. It is chiefly by reference to the basalt flows of the Older Volcanic series that the brown coal beds have been classified as of Pre-Volcanic and of Post-Volcanic age. The Pre-Volcanic brown coals are less widely distributed, and the seams generally are thin, though near Thorpdale a thickness of 40 tt. has been recorded, and from 10 ft. to 12 ft. in the vicinity of Narracan. Both of these localities lie to the south-west of Yallourn, and it has not been proven as yet whether these older coals and accompanying basaltic flows pass under the Morwell beds.The brown coal deposits have accumulated in an area where extensive faulting in early tertiary times has taken place with oscillations of elevation and depression of the land surface. In the vicinity of Yallourn, Paheozoic strata (probably Silurian) are exposed on either bank of the Latrobe River about a mile above the powerhouse weir, where the river flows through steep banks rising a couple of hundred feet on either side. The Silurian strata are highly inclined, and consist mostly of slates and Illudstones. Resting unconformably on the upturned edges of the Silurian is a conglomerate bed of Mesozoic age, above which occur beds clipping to the south-east of felspathic sandstones, with alternating mudstones at times carbonaceous, and containing thin seams of black coal.The brown coal seams and associated lignitic Clays, sands, gravels, etc, rest on the Mesozoic strata (as proved in the vicinity of the power-house and by boring north of the Latrobe River, near the old open cut), but do not appear on the surface of the Mesozoic, where these beds attain an altitude of more than 50 ft. above the present level of the Latrobe River.Half a mile upstream from the power-house a layer of basalt of the Older Volcanic series, almost resting upon the Silurian strata, is...

Prior to 2001 Yallourn Mine has pumped approximately 1000 Megalitres of water per annum from aquifers beneath the mine floor in order to control aquifer pressures that were thought to have an influence on mine floor and permanent batter stability. In 2001 one of the deep aquifer pumps was shut down for five months in order to measure the aquifer recoveries. Prior to the shutdown a UDEC model was created in order to predict what level of recovery in the aquifer pressures would be critical to mine stability. The shutdown showed that the aquifer levels recovered and stabilised at levels that did not threaten the stability of the mine. The aquifers recovered to levels below the critical levels identified in the UDEC model.

The project management and construction plans adopted by Davy McKee for the Cooper Basin Liquids Project resulted in a project notable for the Relatively short duration from initiation of the design through to liquids production. Two locations were involved, one at Moomba in the far northeast of South Australia some 800 km from Adelaide, and the other at Port Bonython some 40 km from Whyalla. Total expenditure by the owners at the two sites was in excess of $600 million. Matters covered include organisation, transport, construction, industrial relations, project services and commissioning.

Australia contains a variety of iron ores, differing in grade, chemistry, size distribution and genesis. While a proportion of this ore is used world-wide as blast furnace lump, much of the material mined is high grade fines, requiring agglomeration (usually sintering) before blast furnace reduction. Sintering studies initially concentrated on the production of ferrous material of high iron content, coarse size and sufficient cold strength. In recent years research involving pilot plant sintering, precise test procedures and mineralogical analyses has focussed on the additional sinter properties of hot strength and reducibility. Aspects of mineralogical studies applied to iron ore sintering are described.

Optimisation of capital in the development process is critical to the profitability of any new mining venture. The process of optimisation should apply to all aspects, that is the financing, management, revenue, reporting and, of course, the development of the project. Unfortunately, too much emphasis has been placed on the optimisation of the financing or reporting aspects and too little on the project itself. This paper addresses the latter.

Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised. In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations: Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits. Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant. Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation. Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early-1980s. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill? projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product. JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. JKTech was established in 1986 to commercialise and market the most promising outcomes and thus ensure their continuing availability to the mineral industry. These include: commercial software (JKSimMet, JKSimBlast and JKMetAccount); monographs (Comminution and Blasting); technologies (Mine-to-Mill? and flotation optimisation); and hardware products (JKFrothCam, JKJetLift? and the Mineral Liberation Analyser). This paper summarises these technologies and their benefits.

In a follow-up of 12 production blasts in a quarry at the Mrica project on Java, tightly spaced porous bands were found to govern fragmentation to the extent that the average fragment size k5o was nearly independent of the specific charge within the range 0.30-0.56 kghn3. This fording resulted in a reduction of the running costs for drilling and blasting by 20-40%. Our work has given considerable practical benefits and insights into the blasting process, even if the results were of no direct use to check out fragmentation predictions based on models, which was one of our main Goals.

This paper introduces a classification of gold orebodies, and comments on the importance of cutting high grade values, the choice of an appropriate ore reserve method and the necessity for producing recoverable ore reserves by considering the mining policy. The author stresses the importance of obtaining the appropriate information from the data relevant to a particular deposit as opposed to transfering parameters from one deposit to another.

Segnit's article puts forward the views that the rocks associated with the Broken Hill lode are simply highly metamorphosed sediments, tbat metasomatism on a large scale was not an important factor at Broken Hill and that the rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.In particular, the garnet quartzite, the most abundant rock in the limited section of the mine examined by Segnit, is described by him as a simple, metamorphosed manganiferous sediment.These views, while consonant with those of H. F. King (1958), are drastically opposed to those of myself and others e.g. Gustafson et al. (1950, p. 1383) who state that the most extensive hydrothermal alteration in the district is in and close to the zinc lodes in the Zinc Corporation and New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. mines. Segnit's conclusions conflict with 1. the absence of any manganiferous sediment in the Broken Hill district except in close proximity to the lode,2. the clear cut metasomatism of the dolerite dykes which indicates that the ore is younger than the dykes and therefore post-metamorphism, and 3. the petrofabric study of den Tex (1958) which provided independent evidence that the ore in its present form post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area.The original sediments of the district were mudstones and calcareous sandstones with 2 to 5 per cent CaO. The Mt. Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the orebody, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control'of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data, on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades Are determined from assay of samples taken from blasthole cuttings.

Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

The Chairman of this afternoon's session is Dick Carter. This afternoon is the culmination of this conference. We've looked in the first session at regulation; in the second session at valuation techniques and this session we look at valuation in practice. Dick's involvement in the mineral industry has been wide ranging and distinguished. Dick has worked with BHP since 1960, when he joined BHP Steel as a commercial trainee. Dick holds a B.Comm. from the Newcastle University College of the University of New South Wales and was educated at the Australian Administrative Staff College and Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme. During the past decade, he has headed the minerals group's Aluminium Divison, Resource Planning and Development, Non-Ferrous Metals and Business Development Organisations. Dick currently serves as Executive Director of BHP Gold Mines Limited and Managing Director of Ok Tedi Mining Limited. His experience covers Australian Manganese Company, Mineral Deposits Limited, Northern Rivers Rutile, Tasmanian Electrometallurgical Company Limited, Mount Newman Joint Venture, Worsley Aluminium and Carnilya Hill Joint Venture Operating Committee. His industry associations include the Executive Board of the Gold Producers Association, the Federal Executive of the Australian Goldmining Industry Council as well as the World Gold Council. The flotation results of artificial mixed mineral showed that using combined salified water glass and (NaPO3)6 as a modifier for magnesite-dolomite separation can obtain an excellent Selectivity.
