PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. In the last few years it has become legal for women to work without restriction underground in some States in Australia. Since the mid 1970's there have been women graduates in mining engineering from several Australian tertiary institutions. Women from this group are the first females to have been employed to do manual work underground this century. The questions which arise are "What are the current parameters surrounding the employment of women underground?" and "What have been the experiences of those women who have worked underground?". In order to answer these questions, contact has been made with the various mining schools in Australia, the relevant government departments, the main underground mining companies, the relevant unions and professional associations, and other women who have worked undergrond. Personal experience as both a miner and a mining engineer at the CSA Mine near Cobar in New South Wales is also used.

At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

Mineral froth flotation is used to separate particles of valuable mineral from its associated gangue. It involves the selective separation of the hydrophobic particles from the slurry into the froth. As air is blown into the slurry, the hydrophobic particles attach to the air bubbles, while the waste particles remain in suspension. While the froth rises up, bubbles start to coalesce and burst, allowing the entrained liquid surrounding the bubbles to drain and return part of the gangue to the pulp. Mineral separation is therefore a function of the amount of valuable material loaded on the bubble shells, as well as the amount of gangue material entrained in the liquid channels separating the bubbles (Plateau borders). As a result, the separation performance of the process is affected by mineral attachment and drainage or bursting in the froth. This study aims to establish the relationship between solids loading, froth stability and separation performance. For this purpose, a series of industrial experiments were carried out to measure mineral attachment as well as bubble bursting by combining direct sampling of the bubble films and video image analysis of the froth surface. This work suggests that the solids loading on bubbles strongly affects the separation performance. The results generally showed that solids loading and concentrate grade are closely related, while froth bursting rate can be linked to the drainage of gangue from the Plateau borders and also to the overall recovery of valuable mineral. It was shown in particular that higher loadings, usually associated with higher froth bursting rates, are indicative of more selectivity in attachment and therefore a higher mineral grade in the concentrate. Additionally, this work suggests that bubble solids loading and froth stability are essential parameters to include in froth flotation models as they allow control and optimisation of the flotation performance.

There are many variables in a flotation concentrator, some of which are outside the actual flotation stage, which affect metallurgical performance. The number of such variables which can now be measured on a continuous basis has increased significantly over the past 20 years. They can be broadly classified under the headings of physical, chemical, and elemental. In this paper reference is made to a number of such variables, and comment is made on the state of the art in their measurement. Although not confined to development in Australia, particular reference is made to the considerable Australian contribution in this area of Technology.

The surface reactivity of underwater deposited, high-sulfide copper mine tailings was evaluated under fresh and saline water cover conditions by measuring the surface and pore water quality as a function of time. The experiments were conducted in aquarium type lysimeters having a shallow, well-aerated water cover up to approximately 0.25 m over the tailings. Natural lake water was used for the fresh water cover and seawater for the saline water cover scenarios. The tailings showed significant surface reactivity and oxidation under both fresh and saline water cover conditions. The surface water quickly became moderately to highly acidic, and surface oxidation of the tailings resulted in increased dissolution and release of sulfates, iron (total), calcium, magnesium, aluminium, manganese, copper, nickel, zinc, lead, cobalt and silicon to the water covers. A moderate to slightly increased loss of total sulfides, including pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, occurred in the tailings surface layer to a very shallow depth. In comparison to the fresh water cover, the complete acidification of the saline water cover was delayed by approximately 30 - 40 days because of its additional available alkalinity. Whereas the rate of surface water acidification and release of aluminium and silicon were moderately reduced under saline water cover conditions in comparison to those for the fresh water cover, the release of calcium, magnesium, iron (total), copper, nickel, lead, zinc, sodium and potassium were enhanced. The mass transfer fluxes for dissolved copper, nickel lead, zinc and iron (total) from the tailings substrate to the surface water cover following surface water acidification were higher by 50 per cent or more in the saline water cover than those in the fresh water cover. This release was also reflected in moderate loss of pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite in the very shallow upper surface layer of the tailings at the tailings-water interface, although the loss of pyrite in the surface layer was less pronounced. In both cases, the dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals moderated, to a certain extent, pH and acidity in the water cover.

RACE Quartz-calcite veins containing Au, As, W, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe cross-cut Alpine Fault- related structures in the Alpine Schist of South Island, New Zealand. These veins, and some other related veins have been deposited by metamorphic fluids at 250¦C to >320¦C at pressures of a few hundred bars. The fluids were very variable in composition, with 0 to 50 mole % CO2 and 2 to 18 wt. % NaCl equivalent. Penetration of hot metamorphic fluids to shallow levels in the crust was facilitated by rapid uplift of hot rocks at a compressive plate margin. Fluid immiscibility at shallow levels caused concentration of salts and metals into the aqueous phase. Gold precipitation was caused by reduction by pelitic country rock and/nr dluILion by other aqueous fluids.

Jack made his first report on the field in 1880, but his principal report was made in 1883. W. E. Cameron described the Great Northern lodes in 1904. Numerous later reports on various mines were made by L. C. Ball, J. H. Reid and C. C. Morton, the most important of which were on the Black King, Good Friday, St. Patrick and the Great Northern Gully Shaft.GENERAL GEOLOGYJensen maps the Herberton area as part of a granite massif intruding rocks of two ages, the Younger Metamorphics of Silurian-Devonian age, and the Older Metamorphics of Older Palaeozoic age. The distinction is apparently based on lithological data. The Older Metamorphic rocks occur as inliers in the granite massif to the west and east of Herberton (Fig. 1).The area described consists of granite traversed by numerous dykes. West of the area, approaching the Older Metamorphic rocks, the granite becomes finer grained as if chilled towards its contact, and the dykes more numerous. To the east, passing from the Nova Scotia mine to Mount Lavery there are numerous dyke rocks, but the outcrops are poor and knowledge of the geology indefinite. The area is the main tin-producing area. To the west there are comparatively small tin lodes in the granite, and the "Copper Firing Line" occurs in the Older Metamorphic...

The resurgence of mining over the last 30 years has coincided with a growing awareness in the community of the importance of environmental protection and conservation. This involves a growing concern about environmental degradation, an increasing desire for the setting-aside of natural areas for wilderness preservation, accelerating pressures for the return of large areas of Crown land to Aboriginal ownership and a widening view that economic growth itself may be undesirable (Burton, 1987). This has lead to much public debate over the implementation of sound environmental policies to achieve a balance between economic necessities and ecological goals.

For many years it was realised that the methods used for unloading concentrates at Port Pirie were inefficient and labour intensive, therefore, when a decision was reached to standardise the east-west rail link from Sydney to Perth, the opportunity was taken to consider entirely new schemes for the handling of concentrates at Broken Hill and Port Pirie. After considerable testing and investigation, it was decided to install a completely new concentrates handling plant incorporating a tippler at Port Pirieòto replace the previous long established methods of unloading and dis- tributing concentrates to the operating plant.and the shipping berths. To achieve this, wagons of concentrates from the various mines are marshalled in a set order at Broken Hill and conveyed to Port Pirie in 56-wagon trains. On arrival at Port Pirie, the wagons are checked and moved to a position where they come under the control of the automatic wagon marshalling equipment.

In this paper, it is shown that the higher the pre-activation concentration of copper ions in pulp, the larger the adsorption amounts of copper ions and xanthate on arsenopyrite surface, and the better the arsenopyrite flotability in strong alkaline medium. On arsenopyrite pre-activated with cupric ions, the xanthate adsorption density in strong alkaline medium is approximately equivalent to that of cupric ions. It is therefore concluded that an amount of copper ions adsorb on arsenopyrite surface first, and then an amount of xanthate can (and only can) adsorb dependently on the surface active sites produced by these adsorbed copper ions on the mineral, so that arsenopyrite is kept rather flotable and is hardly separated from pyrite even in very strong alkaline medium. Selectively wiping out the surface copper active sites on arsenopyrite is the key point of successful separation of pyrite from arsenopyrite. According to this theory, a new 'SZLI' (know-how) method was recommended to satisfactorily deal with the difficult separation.

The recovery of gold from refractory ores and concentrates can be achieved in a number of ways using roasting and leaching procedures. The Sirosmelt system introduces a new approach to the recovery of gold from these materials using smelting procedures. Laboratory studies were carried out to establish procedures for operating the Sirosmelt system for recovery of gold and associated valuable elements from an ore containing 17.5 g/t gold and a concentrate containing 22 g/t gold as well as substantial copper levels. Copper, iron, lead and matte were evaluated as collecting phases for the gold. The ore smelting procedure recovered 80-90% of the gold whilst smelting concentrate gave 98-99% gold recovery.

This paper will describe the exploration project which led to the discovery of the La Escondida porphyry copper deposit in northern Chile and will serve as companion paper to the description of the geology of Escondida being presented by J M Ojeda. The author would like to express his appreciation to Robert Hickman, Chairman of Minera Escondida, for permission to present this paper.In July 1978, a proposal was made by J D Lowell to Robert Wheaton, then Exploration Manager of Utah International, that Utah fund a "grass roots" program exploring for porphyry copper deposits in northern Chile. Wheaton expressed interest, and it was agreed that Getty Oil Co also be invited to participate. A joint venture agreement for the Atacama Exploration Project was signed January 1, 1979, between Utah, Getty and Lowell. The project was managed by Lowell who reported to a management committee which through most of the project consisted of Lowell, Francisco Ortiz, Robert Wheaton, Maurice Young, Sigfried Muessig and Louis Rove. Oliver Warin and Jim Bratt participated in the committee in the last phase of the contract. Special thanks are due Louis Rove of Getty and Maurice Young of Utah who made contributions throughout the course of the project. Francisco Ortiz was resident manager through most of the project.

SLon magnetic separators utilise the combined force fields of magnetism, pulsating fluid and gravity to continuously beneficiate fine weakly magnetic minerals. They possess the advantages of high efficiency, low operative cost and high reliability. Until now there were about 600 SLon magnetic separators widely applied in processing oxidised iron ores, ilmenite, manganese ore and many other minerals. Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. THE millng methods employed in the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's mines are, perhaps, less known to the milling world than those of other important districts, due to the geographical remoteness and isolation of the Mount Lyell field,but they present many features which are unusual, and should be of interest to the mining engineer. Typical mining is carried out on an open-stope system, details of which are the result of local experience and evolution, and of which the outstanding feature is that the ground is so worked as to be largely self-supporting by virtue of domical form given to the stope roofs. It is locally termed "rill" stoping,' but differs widely from what is generally understood by that designation, chiefly in that the "rill" or slope is developed in every direction from a central focus, and not merely in directions followllig the strike of a lode or ore-body whose longitudinal dimensions are very much greater than its width. Such terms as "donie stoping" or "arched-back stoping" would be more appropriate and descriptive.The company's active operations' at the present time extend to the Mount Lyell and North Lyell mines, and, though the fundamental principles of stoping methods are the same in each, the dissimilarity of the ore-bodies, both in nature and mode ofoccurrence, necessitates considerable variation as to details to meet the respective conditions. The Mount Lyell pyritic body lends itself to the adoption of the .system in its simplest and almost ideal form, and a description of stoping in this mine willserve best to illustrate it, while later reference to details of practice in the North Lyell mine will indicate how it may be varied to meet more difficult circumstances.

To reduce the corrosion of a stainless steel crystallizer, caused by accumulation of chloride impurity in the liquor during the crystallization of ammonium sulphate, a strongly basic anion exchange resin in the sulphate form may be used to remove the chloride from the liquor. The spent resin may be regenerated with dilute ammonium sulphate.The ions involved are sorbed by the resin in the order Equation 1. The sorption of chloride from the liquor and the regeneration of the resin depend upon the effect of concentration on the formation of the the ion pair NH6SO4. The sulphate ion dominates sorption from dilute solution of ammonium sulphate containing minor amounts of choride; choride ion dominates sorption from concentrated solution.
