The mine planning and operational aspects of applying Continuous Surface Miner (CSM) technology to Australian coal strip and open cut mines is investigated for both existing and planned deposits. CSM produc- tivity as a function of geomechanical properties, formation thickness, mechanical availability and in-pit physical constraints, are considered. Productivity and operational costs are derived from current production machines and from first principles.

The undeniable fact of life in the next 25 years will be the increasing difficulty of the physical conditions of Australian orebodies facing future miners. We are all familiar with names such as the 3000 orebody at Mt Isa, Hilton, Century, Macarthur River, Cannington, and Ernest Henry. These projects represent a significant. proportion of the planned underground mine development in Australia. Moreover, many of these new orebodies are an order of magnitude more difficult to mine and process than their predecessors. Extraction will be from deeper and potentially more hazardous working environments. Occupational health and safety considerations will place unprecedented demands upon mine operators and technology providers of the future.

As part of the construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop it was necessary to construct two 7 metre diameter tunnels, each 100 metres in length, by shield driven excavation through an alluvial valley at Elizabeth Street. The tunnels had a primary support of bolted precast reinforced concrete liner blocks and were excavated with the aid of compressed air. The work was undertaken by the Tunnelling Group of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works as nominated sub-contractor to John Holland (Constructions) Pty. Ltd. The Grasberg Mine is a copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and located in the high equatorial mountains of the Indonesian province of Papua. The climate is alpine/subalpine with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. The daily average temperature ranges from about 2¦C to 14¦C and the annual rainfall in the vicinity of the mine and overburden stockpiles is about 4000 mm to 5000 mm. Mining of the Grasberg open pit will continue until 2014 at which time approximately 2750 Mt of overburden will have been produced. Current overburden production rates are 200 Mt per annum. The current mill rate is 230 000 t/day from the Grasberg pit (190 000 t/day) and the underground operations (40 000 t/day). The acid rock drainage (ARD) issues associated with overburden from the Grasberg operations were identified early in the mining operation. Almost all overburden placed to date has been Potentially Acid Forming (PAF). Laboratory testing has identified four main overburden types: limestone and non-acid forming (Green waste), PAF low capacity (Blue waste) and PAF high capacity (Red waste), and Heavy Sulfide Zone (HSZ), which contains greater than 20 per cent pyrite. Waste type block modelling indicates that at least 30 per cent of the overburden production from 2003 to the end of Grasberg pit operations will be limestone. Strategies are being developed to maximise the beneficial use of limestone through strategic blending and placement for ARD mitigation and control.

Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Three specific areas for iodel application are in the measurement of system performance, the development of the '_ nterrelationships of the components of deep Wining process and the evaluation of new and Lnnovative mining technology.

Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in both Australia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.

Skarns typically are zoned and the deposit- or district-scale zonation pattern is an important tool in exploration for skarn deposits. Zonation in individual deposits has been described in many publications, and the general zoning patterns have been summarised by Einaudi, Meinert and Newberry (1981), Meinert (1997), and Meinert, Dipple and Nicolescu (2005). Although zonation is present in most skarns as the result of a basic process of transferring heat and fluids from magmas to wall rocks, the specific zoning pattern in each skarn may vary greatly. For example some zones may be missing entirely or multiple zones may be telescoped. Such variations can be caused by several factors including depth of formation, magma composition, timing of the exsolution of magmatic aqueous fluids, redox state of the magma and redox state of the wall rocks. To use zonation as a predictive tool in skarn exploration, all the controlling factors have to be considered. In this study, we discuss some of the factors that may affect the zoning patterns in Ca skarns. Magnesium skarn has dramatically different mineralogy and is not discussed here. This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

Nchanga Division of ZCCM has installed and operated a trolley assist system on part of their truck fleet for some three years. This paper examines how the system came to be chosen and how the many features of construction and operation were dealt with. The economics and productivity of the system are presented as are the personnel aspects of acceptance and training. Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines is a state controlled copper mining company formed by the amalgamation of the former Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines and Roan Copper Mines. The company operates seven copper mines the largest producer being the Nchanga division, which is scheduled to produce some forty-two percent of Zambia's copper production. The division operates four open pits and an underground mine which produce annually some 192 000 and 96 000 tonnes respectively of copper contained in ore.

As Coal Mining Areas develop, problems relating to strata control increase. The "easy" coal has been extracted and the future development lies in the direction of greater depths of cover and more difficult strata conditions. To provide solutions to the problems encountered the techniques of constructing and testing physical models have been developed and refined. With a sound knowledge of model theory allied to practical experience, mining research engineers use physical cemented material models to examine, assess and solve mining problems relateu to strata behaviour and environment. For a model to provide the answer to a particular mining problem it is essential that as much information as possible be obtained from the mine or area of a mine which the model is to represent. Details relating to the strata, geological malformations, and the stress environment must be collected and collated to ensure reliable results.

Oxidation of artificial Imperial Smelting Furnace lead bullion was performed during cooling between 1180 and 820°C in order to attempt to produce a tin-rich dross.The addition of sodium carbonate together with stirring increased the tin content of the dross when oxidation was carried out with air or PbO on zinc-free bullion.Zinc in the bullion during oxidation resulted in a decrease in tin concentration of the dross due to zinc oxidation and copper entering the dross.

Western Mining Corporation (WMC), managers of the Windarra Nickel Project, installed a raise-bored haulage shaft and underground crushing system at the Mt Windarra Nickel Mine in 1982. The system is the second of its type installed by WMC, the first being at the Otter Juan Mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limitations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine.The Windarra haulage system required a single 3 m diameter vertical raise drill hole, 470 m deep and equipped for skip haulage. Two five tonne skips, in balance, hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonne/hr, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50 per cent. The system is now fully operational and will enable the mine to achieve its maximum production rate.The raise-bored shaft system has been shown to be cost effective and would be used again in circumstances where raise drilling is applicable.

The main iron ore deposits of Western Australia fall into three very different geological classes, which are, in order of importance: hematite enrichment ore, pisolitic limonite ore, and sedimentary ore. These are presently (1973) being mined in the approximate proportions 20 : 2 : 1, while the equivalent proportions for reserves are, very approximately, 200 : 70 : 1. Two minor categories which mar- ginally qualify as ore are detrital material variously referred to as scree ore or canga, and potentially beneficiable iron formation. These two latter types are dealt with very briefly, and the three main categories are dis- cussed in order of economic significance. Hematite enrichment ore results from the selective replacement of a pre-existing host rock by hematite. Almost without exception, this host is cherty banded iron formation (BIF); but certain exceptions have great genetic inter- est. Ore bodies of this kind occur both in the Archaean BIFs of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Blocks and in the Proterozoic BIFs of'the Hamersley Basin. It follows from their virtual restriction to a single kind of sedimentary host that there is strong stratigraphic control over the shape of ore bodies: these may be almost flat, of dyke-like form, or of complex configuration, according to the pre-enrichment structure of the host bed. A description is presented of the results of reduction experiments using a laboratory reduction apparatus in which simulation of the gas and temperature profiles which occur in direct reduction shaft furnaces is achieved using microcomputer control. The apparatus allows continously changing reduction conditions to be impressed on lump or pellet samples to simulate the environment that is experienced by iron ore burdens during their transit down the shaft of a direct reduction furnace. Three pellet samples and three lump ore samples were reduced in the apparatus. Comparative reduction curves and strengths after reduction for the materials were obtained over a range of reduction temp- eratures using Midrex-type gas compositions. The resulting reduction and strength curves show considerable variation in behaviour and reflect the physical and chemical variations in the individual ore and pellet types. A comparison is made of the reduction rates and modes of reduction of the samples reduced under "conventional" test conditions using a single unchanging gas composition and the simulated shaft furnace reduction conditions. It was observed that the course of reduction is very different in the two procedures and the major influence of temperature on the strength of the reduced product is noted.

The basic principles of mineral valuation were recognised and propounded at the beginning of this century and have remained virtually unchanged since then. Valuation is seen as a two part process commencing with a technical examination of the mineral property followed by a manipulation of the results of the technical examination in order to determine the monetary value of the project. A thorough and competent technical examination was seen then and remains now as the essential but not sufficient foundation for reliable valuation. All authors stressed the need to maintain the integrity of the data base and to ensure adequate coverage of all relevant aspects. The monetary valuation process through most of the first half of this century was mainly based on the Hoskold two rate method, derived from the formulae for valuing annuities but modified to provide explicitly for recovery of capital. Though the basic principles of valuation have not changed significantly, the means of implementing the components of the technical examination, the styles of deposits being evaluated and the mechanisms of monetary valuation have changed dramatically. Despite all the technological improvements, however, mineral valuations are still as apt to vary from realised performance as at any time in the past. As well, mineral property valuations are now being extended to cover all assets of potential value, including valuation of exploration tenements with or without identified resources. Valuation of exploration tenements will continue to be one of the most difficult and contentious of valuation tasks.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. In many metal mines in China,the 70B2 series of fans has been used for main fans for a long time.These fans generate higher static pressures than are required for the relatively high equivalent orifices of the ventilation systems of many of the mines. As a consequence, their running efficiency is common only around 30%. The loss of power is significant.
