Quantification of site-specific sulfide oxidation rates is crucial to accuracy of prediction of, for example, the environmental impact of a mine site. Sulfide oxidation reactions are reportedly increased by bacterial mediation; determination of abiotic and biotic weathering rates thus requires the establishment of sterile control samples. However, sterilisation often involves exposure of samples to extreme conditions that may alter the physical, chemical, or mineralogical characteristics of the tailings and hence affect element release rates. The impact of various sterilisation techniques, common and novel, on the element release rates from tailings from the Kristineberg site, northern Sweden, has been investigated. Batch weathering experiments indicated that the different methods of sterilisation (autoclaving, heat treatment, ethanol/heat treatment, application of antibiotics, rinsing with distilled water, and γ-radiation) did not greatly affect long-term element release rates. Long-term experiments (>30 days) are thus to be recommended for establishment of weathering rates. Sterilised and untreated control samples showed similar element release rates after ~100 days of experiments; possible explanations include that microbial oxidation is not important under our experimental conditions (Po2 = 0.2 atm, pH ~2.3, 22¦C, 0.01 M HNO3, no additional nutrients).

A new two-metre column self-heating test procedure has been developed at the University of Queensland, which clearly shows the hot spot development phases that take place in bulk coal self-heating. The column results provide a more reliable indication of the self-heating propensity of coal than small-scale index tests. At the same time, off-gas evolution patterns associated with hot spot development are obtained, including the recognition of hydrogen evolution from oxidation at temperatures less than 80¦C. Subtle differences in off-gas evolution from self-heating between gassy and gas-drained coal are also apparent. This new approach to coal self-heating assessment offers an opportunity to further the understanding of the complexities of spontaneous combustion and will enable more accurate risk assessment for the coal industry.

The Resources Boom of the 1960s in Australia provided a strong foundation for AustraliaÆs economic prosperity for the remainder of the twentieth century. In combination with sound economic management, our world-class minerals and energy sector has played a key role in the nationÆs competitiveness, and it has been the major source of our exports since the early 1970s. Even with the emergence since 1990 of major mineral provinces in Latin America and elsewhere, Australia has increased its percentage of world production of several minerals. Between 1990 and 2002, our share of iron ore production rose from 13 per cent to 20 per cent, nickel mine production from eight per cent to 17 per cent, copper mine production from four per cent to seven per cent and zinc mine production from 13 per cent to 17 per cent. Whether this situation will continue during the coming decades motivates the discussion of this reflective paper. The approach is to consider fundamental supply-side and demand-side issues in arriving at a view about the state of the world, the world minerals sector and the Australian resources sector in the coming decades. The argument draws from the experiences of other mature mineral producing countries such as Canada and the United States. In such nations, efficient producers have often sustained competitiveness for extended periods, despite falling grades and other challenging operating conditions. Yet several forces are changing the economic geography of the minerals industry in significant ways. These include the re-emergence of major global mining corporations, the revision of mineral policy in over 100 nations since 1985, the mobility of technology and more efficient transport both for mineral productions and mining professionals. Given these trends the paper argues that the Australian mining industry must continue to change and evolve significantly in the foreseeable future. Its leaders will need to be even more internationally focused if it is to maintain its strong competitive position.

Sinter quality depends heavily on the mineral phases, textures and physical structure of the sinter, which are formed upon solidification of the sinter melt. The interaction of sinter initial melt with its surrounding materials will impact the properties of the sinter melt and consequently the solidified structure and quality of resultant sinter. Spreading and penetration are two important phenomena dictating the interaction of the initial melt with its surrounding materials, such as nuclei and adhering fines. In the present study, the penetration behaviour of an initial melt into various natural iron ore substrates of different ore types during sintering was studied using a laboratory scale penetration testing procedure. The penetration depth and width were found to increase with temperature and vary with the type of iron ore due to their unique pore structure and mineralogical texture.

The reduction of titanium tetrachloride to trichloride can be achieved by employing hydrogen and electric arcs. It is possible to produce melts containing up to 50% TiCk in the eutectic mixture of LiCl/KCl by striking a D.C. arc at the surface in the presence of hydrogen and TiCl. vapour. If the electrode IS made to just penetrate the surface of the salt mixture, a hot zone results from the' high resistance contact with both lower chlorides and sintered titanium may be produced. The sintered metal forms just below the melt surface while the trichloride forms at the gaslIiquid junction.The "hotspot cathode" appears to offer a solution to the problem of producing coherent deposits as the spong'e metal can 'be continuously withdrawn in a similar manner to the "calcium process".INTRODUCTIONConsiderable interest has been shown for some years in the possible development of a cheap electrolytic process for the extraction of titanium metal, since a method using simple materials and cheap electric power would materially reduce the cost of production. Even when cheap starting materials are used, however, there exist several general difficulties in the operation of plant which both limit the speed of production and increase the cost of the product. It happens that most of the techniques so far tried produce a powder as cathodic deposit, and when this is the case the following difficulties arise:1. The whole contents of the bath must be treated with solvent in order to extract the 'metal powder which may itself tend to oxidise, and thus become contaminated.2. Fine metal powders, which often contain residual entrained salts, are less easy to consolidate by arcmelting than metal sponge.

In recent years stricter requirements imposed variously by the Companies Acts, auditors and the Stock Exchanges have resulted in annual financial statements of mining companies becoming more detailed, informative and useful. Standards of reporting on ore reserves have not kept pace with the improvements in financial information disclosure, despite the fact that ore reserves are usually the most important asset of a mining company. The ore reserve reporting practices of fifteen leading Australian mining companies are analysed against important specific criteria. In terms of detailed and meaningful disclosure, there is scope for major improve- ments in annual ore reserve reporting Practices.

The basic separation phenomena taking place in film concentration processes are studied through a kinetic-probabilistic approach. This approach is based on the fact that the particle velocity in the film separation phenomena is a random variable and may be defined by frequency distributions and probability laws. The approach requires: 1. development of probabilistic models for describing the behaviour of particles having different specific gravity and size along selected trajectories in the separating devices; 2. setting up an experimental procedure for determining the relevant frequency distribution curves at the exit of the separators for the particles mentioned above; 3. estimation of model parameters and model validation. In the paper, the model equations are given for the mass distribution of particles on the surface of separators, the mass distribution at the exits of shaking tables and the residence time distribution in channel type devices. The relation between residence time distribution and particle velocity distribution is derived. The test procedure has been defined and results are reported for the exit or residence time distribution in channels. A comparison between experimental and calculated frequency distributions is reported.

Petroleum exploration is proceed ing in Western Australia at an ever- increasing pace. Results in recent years have been very successful, with the discovery and development of the Barrow Island oilfield and the Dongara gasfield, and the discovery of several major gas-condensate fields on the Northwest Shelf. The Northwest Shelf discoveries will have a big impact on the economy of the State by providing an abundant indigenous source of energy. Prospects for further large dis- coveries are believed to be excellent. The most prospective areas are thought to be on the continental shelf in the Carnarvon, Browse, Perth, Canning, and Bonaparte Gulf Basins.

Determining the mechanical properties of rocks is important for various civil engineering fields, including the mining of raw materials for aggregates used in the construction and paving industries. Traditionally, the mechanical properties of rocks are obtained through in situ and laboratory tests during geotechnical surveys. However, these time-consuming surveys involve many resources. In contrast, hyperspectral remote sensing methods make it possible to identify the mineralogical composition and crystallographic structure of the rock; properties that control the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this work, we characterise the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks by using a hyperspectral sensor in laboratory conditions. We collected about 150 cylindrical samples of carbonate rock, with a wide range of strength values from several rock outcrops in Israel. We used a point spectrometer in the range of 0.4–2.5 μm and a spectral image sensor in the range of 3.0–12.0 μm, scanning the samples to obtain the signature of their light reflections and spectral emissivity. We then measured the samples’ density, porosity, water absorption, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). We used sophisticated data mining to find statistical relationships between the hyperspectral signatures of the samples and their mechanical properties. We used this data to identify the most dominant wavelengths for predicting mechanical properties. We found that the density, porosity, and water absorption of carbonate rocks could be confidently predicted based on spectroscopy data, while the UCS of the rock could also be predicted, but less significantly. The results of the study pave the way for the development of measuring tools for the mechanical properties of rock, based on non-destructive tests of quarrying materials.

Results of experiments for dissolution of zinc by aeration of sphalerite in glass, copper, galvanised iron and stainless steel vessels of identical dimensions are reported. It was found that in a glass container dissolution of zinc reaches a maximum after 30 min aeration and then decreases whereas in the copper container dissolution remains nearly unchanged up to 30 min aeration and then increases. In the cases of galvanised iron and stainless steel containers zinc dissolution increased steadily with time up to 60 min aeration. It is suggested that the different rates of dissolution in glass and copper containers may be due to electro-chemical actions.

Multi-sensor fusion visual perception technology significantly enhances visual perception capabilities in complex and harsh environments by combining visual data from different sensors. This technology is especially useful for scenarios where traditional single visible light sensors, such as standard cameras, struggle due to poor lighting, adverse visual conditions, or other visual obstructions. In environments with low light, smoke, or dust, the performance of conventional visible light sensors degrades, limiting their application. By integrating data from various sensors like radar, infrared thermal imaging, and others, multi-sensor fusion technology provides a more comprehensive and complementary visual solution. This fusion not only enhances the robustness of visual systems but also greatly expands their potential applications in fields like visual surveillance. In recent years, deep learning methods have become the mainstream technology for addressing multi-sensor fusion issues, demonstrating significant advantages in adaptive feature selection compared to traditional machine learning methods. However, deep learning-based multi-sensor fusion algorithms still face several challenges. The design of network structures is often redundant, lacking effective screening of useful components within multimodal information. Mainstream fusion algorithms focus excessively on improving display effects without adequately considering the needs of downstream applications and tasks. Existing fusion perception algorithms are generally designed for open visual scenes and lack targeted design for complex visual degradation factors present in tunnel environments of mines. Current deep learning methods for designing multi-sensor fusion networks heavily rely on manual experience to create fusion modules. This reliance increases the complexity of network design and can lead to redundancy. Redundant network modules are difficult to identify in end-to-end learning tasks at this stage, significantly slowing down network inference and potentially interfering with the output of fusion perception. Additionally, training these fusion modules typically requires large amounts of well-annotated multimodal data, further increasing implementation difficulty and cost. For instance, the fusion network design proposed by Li and Wu (2018) focuses on extracting multimodal fusion features, while Zhao et al (2020) introduced a feature decomposition mechanism in the feature fusion and extraction modules. Researchers like Zhang and Ma (2021), Xu et al (2020), and Liu et al (2017) have attempted to improve network structures through dense cascades and the introduction of residual connections. Although these methods have improved the handling of multimodal information to some extent, they still face limitations in distinguishing between useful and redundant information, with redundancy persisting in network designs. Ideally, the design of fusion networks should be more intelligent, guiding network structure design heuristically based on the importance of different modal information for the current task. This would reduce information redundancy and network weights, requiring the development of new algorithms or frameworks capable of automatically identifying and optimising fusion strategies, thereby reducing dependence on manual experience while improving fusion efficiency and network performance. The New England Fold Belt forms the easternmost and youngest section of the Tasman Fold Belt System of eastern Australia. From middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous time it was the site of extensive episodic calc-alkaline magmatism related to W-dipping subduction. The oldest rocks may have formed at least partly in a volcanic island arc, but from the Late Devonian, the fold belt developed as a convergent Pacific-type continental margin. For Late Devonian-Carboniferous time, parallel belts representing continental margin volcanic arc, forearc basin and subduction complex assemblages can be recognised. Major dextral transform faulting may have offset parts of the fold belt in the Late Carboniferous. In addition, some structural blocks which appear to be out of place in the overall palaeogeographic setting are possible exotic or suspect terranes. A great variety of lode deposits ranging in age from middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous is present in the New England Fold Belt. The vast majority of these are related to emplacement of extensive granite plutons and eruption of continental silicic volcanics in Late Permian-Late Triassic time. However, volcanogenic massive sulphides and volcanic hosted epithermal gold-silver deposits in older rock sequences include one major orebody (Mount Morgan) and several important ones (Mount Chalmers, Cracow, Silver Spur, Cangai and Halls Peak). Some problematical deposits are best classified as metamorphic-hydrothermal. These include gold-bearing quartz reefs and stockworks in sedimentary host rocks, the most important of which are at Gympie, and antimony-gold- tungsten mineralisation in the New England area, mainly at Hillgrove.

British Coal has made a practical progressive approach to improving the reliability of its mining equipment. Reliability must be addressed at the specification stage but does not end there and routine procedures are used to procure equipment of adequate reliability. The techniques used to monitor and improve reliability during the operational phase of the equipment, providing engineers and operators with detailed printouts, together with the types of maintenance employed, ensure high levels of availability. Finally, the methods of repair and overhaul of British Coal equipment and systems ensure that the initial reliability targets outlined on the specification, can still be achieved.

To those who have been engaged in the construction of mining and metallurgical plants during the war and post-war periods, it is quite unnecessary to point out the large increases and violent fluctuations in prices of basic commodities and the steady and persistent rise in labour costs. It may, however, be of interest to present these facts in graphic form, and survey the relative heights of the various maxima and the lead and lag of individual waves. Since Descartes demonstrated for us moderns the analogy between geometric form and algebraic statements, the two-dimensional graph has found widespread application. Mathematicians have developed for our information, if not for our confusion, the triangular diagram and the solid three-dimensional figures, which have proved so useful, at least in the hands of the metallurgists at Port Pirie. The model (Plate 1.) which is exhibited here does not pretend however, to indicate the connection between any three inter-related variables, and it is not proposed to burden members with any abstruse mathematical expression for the irregular surface of the blocks. While time is an ordinate common to all sections of the model, each illustrates separately the variation in cost of some particular quantity between the years 1914 and 1922. It is an easy matter to record such individual variations, but it would be an impossible task to state any equation describing accurately the dependence ot the prices, say, of hardwood or of galvanized iron upon that of labour at any particular point of time. The cost of living curve, which has attained such prominence, if not notoriety, in the last few years, is the result of an attempt to show the mass-effect of the components. It is the difficulty found in "assigning the correct weight to the separate items which makes the aggregate curve somewhat misleading at times.Turning to the model, it will be noticed that each section consists of half a dozen pegs.. The first in each row,that coloured red, represents the cost of some particular quantity, such as bricks, timber or coal, at Broken Hill in 1914. The Sepon Copper Project is located in the Savannakhet Province of Laos PDR and is operated by Lane Xang Minerals Ltd (LXML). An Ausenco - Bateman Engineering joint venture, the Khanong Development Group (KDG) managed engineering, procurement and construction of the project. The plant was fully commissioned in March 2005, two weeks ahead of schedule. The plant is designed to produce 60 000 tpa of cathode copper. The process flow sheet includes a pressure oxidation (POX) circuit that leaches pyrite flotation concentrate to generate ferric ions and sulfuric acid for use in atmospheric leaching of a predominantly chalcocite ore. The process is unique in that the chemistry in the autoclave is forced to produce a basic ferric sulfate precipitate for downstream recovery of ferric iron. This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning of the pressure oxidation circuit. The challenges imposed on construction and commissioning due to the remote location of the site, landlocked status and underdeveloped infrastructure in Laos are highlighted.

The former Gwynfynydd gold mine is located within the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, United Kingdom. The black shale-hosted quartz reefs have intermittently produced more than 50 000 ounces of gold since 1863. Its most recent period of operation by Welsh Gold PLC was between 1992 and 1999 when it extracted 10 000 tonnes annually from a total resource base of 180 000 tonnes. A historical mining grade of 15 grammes/tonne was recovered from the Chidlaw Reef on which all production was based. Erratically distributed gold pockets hosted in the footwall zone of a 3 - 6 m wide quartz reef characterise the mineralisation. The gold exhibits a high-nugget effect and as a consequence the accurate determination of tonnage and grade was difficult. Production was undertaken by overhand shrinkage stoping. Due to its location within a National Park certain environmental constraints were placed on the operators. The principal requirement of planning permission was that processing should take place above ground and not involve chemicals. As a result, an underground mill based on physical separation methods was constructed in response to these environmental constraints. Much of the mine discharge is related to the flow of rainwater through the workings from surface openings on the reefs. Discharge from the underground milling facility was enhanced in various metals, particularly zinc, though was reduced to legally acceptable levels using liming tanks prior to discharge into the River Mawddach. The company was required to monitor and treat all water discharged from the mine before it reached the river. The mine closed in 1999, since which time a tip re-processing has continued as part of an environmental remediation and gold supply program.

The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only.A parallel lode, known as the zinc lode, was well developed at that time. The common lead lode gangue minerals-calcite, rhodonite, bustamite-were rare in the underground exposures of the zinc lode. Synthesis of GLORIA side-scan sonar and other geophysical data has provided morpholo- gical and tectonic details of the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates along the Peru Trench (80S-15¦S). Our analyses suggest that a new propagating rift of the Galapagos type is evolving along the Mendana Fracture Zone (MFZ). Subduction induced rift- ing of the Nazca plate is accompanied by organized seafloor spreading for the last 3 Ma at least. GLORIA sonographs and bathymetric mapping show an 8-10¦ divergence in MFZ width towards the Peru Trench. The fracture zone comprises numerous ridges and troughs and a lack of sediment cover in the axial part. Young magnetic lineations (anomalies 1-2A) are observed within the fracture zone wni.cn are orthogonal to the older Nazca plate lineations. The central anomaly narrows west- ward and can be observed up to 400 km seaward of the trench whereas anomaly 2A is terminated about 200 km from the trench axis. Recent SeaMARC II sonar mapping in the region shows large igneous blocks in the Trench axis to the north of MFZ but absent to the south. We believe these blocks represent young seafloor of MFZ rift/spreading center broken off from the ridges as they subduct along the Peru Trench. The MFZ rift is propagating west- ward at a rate of 115 km/Ma (25 km/Ma relative to the South American plate). Given the present rates of accretion at the East Pacific Rise and of propagation along MFZ rift, the Nazca plate will be divided into two parts in about 35 Ma.

Industrial processes involving multi-phase flows such as flotation require understanding of the relationships between bubbles, solid particles and the flow. Modern experimental tools are employed in this effort to measure with great accuracy the basic features of the motion of all three phases in turbulent flow. We employed a unique digital particle image velocimeter (DPIV) that can record with great accuracy and kHz temporal resolution, velocity vectors of all three phases, namely the fluid, the solid particles and the air bubbles. The interaction of these three phases was studied in homogeneous isotropic turbulence generated by cylindrical grids. Particles and bubbles were released into the turbulence and the motions of the three phases were monitored. The experimental results obtained in the present work were compared with the predictions of the models published in the literature.
