The Golden Cross mine was an open-pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998. Closure of the mine has been based on an approach agreed among stakeholders. The initial phase was the release of a closure plan which was regarded as the blueprint for the following phases and the closure works required to implement the plan. The second phase involved lodgment of consent applications and their granting for the final water management configuration. The final phase is monitoring, confirmation that the site is performing as required by the closure plan and consents and settlement of final ownership, management and surety arrangements. Industry best practice modelling techniques have been used to finalise closure design and have been shown to be good predictors of site water management and discharge performance. Site discharges are in compliance with toxicology based water quality criteria for the protection of aquatic life and most discharges from the site, including those from the closed cyanide-tailings facility, can now be discharged without further active intervention or treatment.

The results of iron ore exploration in Western Australia between '1961 and 1964 are outlined, with particular.reference to the Hamersley Iron Province. Exploration during: these three years has increased the known resources of the-,Statle from 275 million tons to almost 9,000 million tons of high- grade hematite ore. In addition, reserves of lower-grade .pisolitic limonite ore are-estimated to amount to 6,000 million tons. The origin and characteristics of the different types of ore is discussed,

Introduction The mine winder is an essential element in the mining of ore in deep level mines and therefore requires a high degree of reliability to avoid interruption of production. Failure of any component on a winder may also be dangerous and expensive to repair. The larger the failure the larger the stoppage. The failure of a winder drum is the ultimate catastrophe, not only because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the lead time in procuring a new drum. Today these types of failure are not as common but many failures have occurred in the past and even today many an old winder is con- sidered for a new and often more arduous duty. As far back as the turn of the century a lot of information had been gathered to try and clear up the complexities of the multi- layering effect of coiling rope under tension onto a drum. Before comparing results obtained by various researchers the nature of the pressure distribution between rope and drum due to multi-layering will be discussed briefly.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.

Long before a modern mine commences operations it has already become a wealth of information. After start up, it can generate enormous quantities of data û especially with semi-automated data acquisition by instrumented mine equipment. However, much of this data is of limited use for evaluation of (potential) performance unless it links in some way to the site business model. An underlying reason for this waste of data is that the different cultures, financial, technical, community, environmental, etc not only have many areas of interest but also have very different conceptual models by which they evaluate performance. It is too ambitious to attempt to bring all of these cultures together û in a single step. However, the success of the Mine to MillTM project has demonstrated that substantial operational value can be added by using a more integrated approach to comminution. The next logical step is to integrate measurement and then to track performance from orebody model to saleable product and waste disposal. From resource to product also represents a path from very sparse, highly variable data to much more detailed measurement and more representative sampling. However, in both cases the data collected is strongly focused on the technical requirements û not on the business model. This paper considers how to define at least some of the key decision points in terms of some case studies. Performance data from many areas might be used to derive simple models which can then be used for forecasting and optimisation of planning.

Brown and Chitombo (2007) indicated that during the last two decades, the international mining industry has been using mainly mass mining methods to extract safely and economically some of the important commodities such as copper, diamonds, gold, iron and nickel. Mass mining may be implemented either on the surface through large open pits or underground using mining methods such as sublevel, block and panel caving. Developments in the last ten years have demonstrated that caving methods can be applied successfully in strong orebodies at greater depths and in increasingly challenging geotechnical environments for which more traditional mining methods would be unsuitable, unsafe and/or uneconomic. These underground mass mining challenges require æfront endÆ investigation and analysis, robust engineering design and disciplined implementation and operation. Newcrest Mining Limited has focused its efforts on the development of gold/copper projects of substantial scale and margin. To help achieve this, the company is applying and further developing mass mining methods. These include large-scale open pits (OP) and underground mining methods such as sublevel (SLC), block (BC) and panel caving (PC). Block and panel caving now offer economies of scale opportunities for Newcrest to achieve high production rates at lower production costs; thus enabling the exploitation of mineral endowments at higher margins. This paper discusses the practical aspects of caving technologies that Newcrest continues to develop through its expertise at Telfer and Ridgeway SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps BC and Cadia East PC projects.

The Joint Committee of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC) have published a Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves. The Code is the result of an initiative begunin 1971 to achieve industry self regulation of Resources and Ore Reserves reporting which resulted first in guidelines for reporting standards but which have now been incorporated in ASX Listing Rules as a Code withsignificant sanctions ensuring compliance. This paper describes the background to the Code, its key provisions, and comments on practical aspects of1 working with the Code and compliance issues.

The North West Queensland Branch of the Institute decided that the time was ripe for an open forum where issues involved with developing the region's assets be presented and discussed between members of the industry and also the general public.That then is the aim of this meeting: it is to be a place of learning and discussion about issues relevantto the developmentofthese deposits. The amount of land subjected to coal surface mining in the United States has been reported at 1, 302, 000 acres (1). Latest National Coal Association estimates (1968) show that about 65, 000 acres are affected annually in the production of 186, 000, 000 tons of coal. Peabody Coal Company affects approximately 9500 acres annually in the ten States in which we are presently operating. Surface mining at Moura, Australia was begun in February 1961. In Marcy 1963, the Marion 7900 dragline with 35 cubic yard bucket went into operation and in 1967 the Marion 8900 dragline with a bucket capacity of 130 cubic yards was put into operation. In addition a third dragline, a 480W was added in 1969. It carries a 15 cubic yard bucket and is used to work areas that are too small to justify movement of the larger machines, In 1969 the Moura surface mine produced 3, 002, 774 short tons, and in 1970 3, 418, 933 short tons.

Concentrating lower and more variable grade ore resources to meet acceptable concentrate quality criteria requires removal of significant amount of gangue minerals. Monitoring plant feed mineralogy and concentrate by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits in concentrate quality and recovery optimisation. There is a need to develop a sensitive slurry on-line analyser for silica, aluminium, magnesium and other light elements.On-line XRF elemental analysis technology, which is a routine practice in base metal concentrators is not able to measure lighter elements than calcium from slurry. Too much of the X-ray fluorescence signal from lighter elements is absorbed by water. The limitations in the direct measurement of silica and other light elements have restricted its use in some applications. Some light element slurry analysers have been developed based on prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) method but they have not performed up to the expectations. In-Situ Resource Utilisation and Off-Earth mining require the application of horizontal drilling. The stability of such openings is challenging when excavating in the lunar regolith. Excavations on the Moon will encounter unconventional operational conditions such as different material properties, low gravity, and a moonquake. Micro-tunnelling or drilling to support lunar exploration and development of infrastructure on the Moon requires stability analysis to ensure its desired performance. The discrete element method (DEM) modelling technique has been utilised to investigate the optimum opening sizes on the lunar soil. From the literature, the mechanical properties of the lunar regolith have been reviewed and used for numerical model development. The model has been calibrated by simulating numerical triaxial tests with the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. Then, detailed parametric studies have been performed to investigate the influence of confinement, opening dimensions and moonquakes on the stability of openings. The findings have led to the development of a simple stability chart of the relationship between unsupported opening sizes and lunar regolith properties at different depths.

The Hellyer orebody is a fine grained, massive sulphide Pb-Zn-Ag- Cu-Au deposit located in western Tasmania. Initial testwork showed that the orebody would be difficult but not impossible to treat by conven- tional flotation. A staged programme-of work was commenced to demon- strate that marketable concentrates could be produced with satisfactory recoveries. Following laboratory testing of drill core to define two flowsheets, bulk samples of Hellyer totalling 20,000 tonnes were trialled at 6 tph in the Cleveland concentrator over six months. The high through- put and extended duration of the trials ensured maximum confidence in the results and that scale-up to subsequent plants would be with a mini- mum of risk. The milling trials were successful and the Cleveland concentrator was expanded in early 1987 to treat 250,000 tpa of Hellyer ore to produce 85,000 tpa of bulk concentrates. Late in 1987 construction commenced on a 1 mtpa concentrator at Hellyer to produce separate copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates.

In Morwell Open Cut brown coal mine, the overburden 'firehole' materials which have resulted from ancient coal fires vary-from hard baked clays to firm laminated lacustrine clays. The need to pre-strip designated areas to reduce the slope height and attain safe digging conditions for the bucket wheel excavator operation is now accepted practice at the open cut mine. In this study, the inherent spatial variability of undrained shear strength of the clay materials has been incorporated in a visco plastic, finite element based, probabilistic slope stability analysis. Data on the costs of initial pre-stripping, excavation and slope failure are collected to provide an economic basis for the optimisation of the design of the overburden batters in Morwell Open Cut. This improved stability modelling is enabling costly pre-stripping to be minimised while ensuring acceptable slope stability conditions and minimising the risk to personnel and plant.

The Curragh mine has complex operating conditions. The mine operates in four seams to produce two coal qualities and is divided into five pits which have different qualities and coal preparation characteristics. The combination of all of the necessary controls to achieve maximum resource utilisation has necessitated the development of suitable software to assist the quality control engineering function. The required software had to be able to plan the optimum yield of coking coal whilst achieving the quality parameters for the coking coal and co-produced steam coal. The program has been designed to evaluate all of the mine faces available for coking coal production. The optimisation of coking coal production is planned and co-produced middlings steam coal determined. The optimum steam coal product is determined using the middlings in combination with bypass production.The computer software to carry out these functions has been designed by using an exploration data base as the raw data source. The program accesses this data and uses a coal preparation prediction program to determine the yield vs. ash relationship for each coal face. A linear program selects the optimum -combination based upon equal incremental ash values. The final output lists feed tonnages, coal preparation conditions, product tonnages and full coal quality data.

The quartzite added at the blast furnace for the purpose of adjusting the chemistry of the burden inputs is shown to have a disproportionate impact on both the level and the variability of the hot metal silicon (HMSi). This conclusion is supported not only by direct correlation involving data from five blast furnaces, but also by mass balances. In one case the R2 correlation coefficient was 0.96 and the mass balance was accurate to within five per cent for a wide range of quartzite additions. The results indicate that as much as 43 per cent of the silicon in the added quartzite reports directly to the hot metal. Indeed, silicon from quartzite was found to be much more likely to report to the hot metal compared to silicon from regular sources (eg coke and sinter), reflecting differences in the activity of the silicon source.

This study examined the structures of the Bowen Basin in central Queensland, Australia, by a series of lineament analyses. These studies were carried out using published geological maps, NOAA-AVHRR imagery, and LANDSAT MSS. Comparisons between these various data sources allowed the discrimination of the nature of the observed lineament sets and the time of their development. These data, which have been verified by field work, allowed the development of an integrated structural model of the Basin as an area of compression. This is considered in the light of a plate tectonics framework for northeastern Australia. The study showed that geological structures of great significance to mining operations, such as strike slip faults and large thrusts, could be identified and mapped using a combination of satellite imagery and field investigation. The small scale view of the satellite imagery also facilitated the development of a structural model for the Bowen Basin.

The properties of bearing metals are of considerable interest to mine engineers, since continuous running of mine and mill machinery is of vital importance. Of the several available types of bearing metal, the low melting point lead or tin base alloys are most generally used in mining plant because of the ease of replacement and the possibility of remelting scrap metal from old bearings. The most valuable property of these "white metals," however, is the plasticity which gives a self-aligning character to the bearings, enablingthem to adjust themselves to inequalities which may exist at the time of fitting, or which may develop during running. The object of the present paper is to explain in general terms the physical structures of white bearing metals, and to point out that constitution rather than composition determines the physical properties of these alloys. The same, indeed, is true of most engineering alloys. In steels, for example, a change in the structure may affect the properties to a far greater extent than a change of chemical composition.Structural changes in steels are produced chiefly by heat treatment. The Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has had occasion from time to time to examine rocks, ores and concentrates from the Yatukoula goldfield, Fiji. The results of the examinations have been supplied as Mineragraphic Reports and have been supplementary to various investigations carried out by the mining companies on ore treatment, or by visiting geologists on the nature of the rocks and lodes. The presence of tellurides was determined in 1935, though incorrectly as nagyagite. The general absence of lead, except in traces, was soon afterwards discovered, and it came to be recognised as the mines were opened up that the chief telluride minerals on the field were sylvanite and native tellurium. Specimens of the tellurides have been provided from time to time by E. G. Theodore, Managing Director of the Emperor Mines Ltd., and of the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines N.L., and further material was recently obtained, as the result of a visit to the field at the invitation of Mr. Theodore.The aim of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the tellurides in these specimens. The paper presents a review of research in the area of explosible coal dust with respect to safety in the underground mining environment. Research over the last several decades has concentrated on generating dust clouds in small scale laboratory explosion chambers to study flammability limits and the physical and chemical variables which affect explosion propensity. The validity of this approach is discussed and the results obtained for a range of coal types compared.
