This paper presents an overview of the development and operation of the PT Adaro Indonesia coal mining project. This operation is an initial two million tonne per annum mine, located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.The paper places emphasis on some of the more unique infrastructure development and operational challenges that exist in such a remote location environment.A brief summary is also given of the Indonesian coal industry, its direction and position as a significant coal producing competitor for Australia.

The principle objective of development mining is to create thoroughfares that can be accessed by personnel and machinery for the entire life of an underground mine. The drill and blast process, being the primary method used when creating these thoroughfares, needs to be able to adequately fracture the rock to be removed whilst at the same time minimising any damage that may be sustained to the rock surface that remains. This process of damage prevention is known by a variety of different names including smooth blasting, sculpture blasting, contour blasting and controlled blasting. Whilst the terms are different, the objective is the same and that is to reduce and better distribute the explosive charges to minimise stressing and fracturing of the rock beyond the neat excavation line. The process in this report will be referred to as perimeter control blasting. This paper will discuss the benefits of using perimeter control blasting in a development mining operation and the theories that govern how these blasting techniques work. The methods that are used to implement perimeter control blasting will also be addressed, paying particular attention to how these blasting techniques have evolved, spawning new and improved perimeter control products. Finally some attention will be given to the process of optimising perimeter control blasting in any underground mining operation.

The safety of mine winder systems with regard to overwind, underwind, rope factors of safety, winder brakes and the like is discussed. Many misunderstandings and poten- tially unsafe practices are discussed as well as variations between requirements of various Mines Departments. Various methods to improve safety are suggested and the formation of an industry committee to review present practice and foster development of improved safety and economy is also suggested.

The earliest caveman, very much a minority group, in the face of great adversity and person- al peril, had to take his livelihood by stealth or force of arms - aided by some degree of reas- on and ingenuity. He was pretty much a law unto himself. As time went on, his type became more numerous; and, after bumping heads with the- tough bloke who lived in the cave across the valley, he decided that perhaps he ought to try to get along with him. Perhaps he could trade some over-ripe emu meat for that `roo skin that he had tried to take. Then too, next time he wants a woman, he had better use a lighter club and just stun her a little - that last one was pretty badly bashed. Perhaps he should keep her around the cave and train her to keep the fire going, gather some roots, and skin the game. Those joeys of hers are kind of cute too. Of course they eat, and it would necessitate bringing in more food. So man gained increasing responsib- ilities to his family and neighbours. He domesticated animals, learned that he could cultivate certain plants that were palat- able and would supplement the meat diet, and found that he could modify earth materials to make tools - he became a grazier, a farmer, a miner and a manufacturer. He ceased to be nom- adic and community life came into being. This complicated life and made more rules essential.

Combining ultramafic mine tailings and acidic mine drainage via mineral carbonation to sequester carbon dioxide, presents an opportunity to minimise waste on mine sites. Low pH mine water with trace element concentrations can be effectively treated by high magnesium mine tailings, a useful source of finely ground reactive matrix. By using milled tailings for mineral carbonation, there are negligible energy requirements for communition of ore rocks to reduce particle size. This study aimed to assess the technical applicability of reacting ultramafic tailings and acidic mine water through mineral carbonation technology in the mining industry. Dissolution has been identified as the rate limiting stage in mineral carbonation; hence the study focused on identifying optimal dissolution conditions. Ultramafic tailings (particle size <100 µm) derived from serpentinite ore, were reacted with a typical mine water that was synthesised in the laboratory. Through variances in the solid to liquid ratios and temperature of dissolution, a maximum five per cent magnesium dissolution efficiency was reached at 50 g/L and 100°C. The acidic mine water was neutralised (from pH <2 to pH ~6) and iron, copper and zinc ion concentrations reduced significantly during the formation of solid precipitates. Carbonation was undertaken by injecting carbon dioxide into the magnesium-rich solution to form stable carbonates. The experimental work demonstrated proof of concept; however, dissolution efficiency and carbon dioxide sequestration was low, indicating that further research would be required before larger scale implementation.CITATION:Malli, H, Bouzalakos, S and Timms, W, 2015. THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. The north-eastern half of the Yilgarn Block of Archaean Rocks lies in the and zone of Western Australia. In recent years a large number of gold mines have been established there, all requiring water supplies from local groundwater. The groundwater sources that have been utilised canprise bedrock, pre-Quaternary channel deposits, and Quaternary alluvium. In the search for groundwater each type of occurrence is considered, and the choice is made on the supply potential and logistics. This paper deals with groundwater in bedrock. Using examples, sane principles of the geology of groundwater occurrence are illustrated.

In designing for a highly productive new mine during the present declining coal market, a very detailed ò planning is necessary. Attitudes of both management and coal operators may have to be changed, with more initial participation by the unions, governmental agencies, and the coal owners. A considerable number of Australian mines are remote from labour source and this trend is likely to increase particularly in the state of Queensland. Consequently such 'mines must be developed on the basis of the future technological and social changes in order to minimise both the capital and operating costs.

In recent years there have been a number of excellent towns built for mining communities in remote parts of Australia. Planning has been thorough, and very large capital expenditures have been made by companies to provide high standards of accommodation, services and amenities. But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. The much-vaunted early success of some iron ore, bauxite and coal projects has led to a belief that the success of all mining projects is assured. Those holding this belief ignore the vagaries of mineral deposits and of markets, and the need to amortise large high-risk capital expenditures, much of which is spent on social and industrial infrastruc- ture. An understanding of the importance of the different components that comprise a rock bolt unit is necessary to ensure the proper use of rock bolts as a means of roof support. The various anchors, bolts and plates in use in Australia have been designed and adapted for Australian con- ditions. As mining conditions change, so will the types of bolts in use. This is apparent in the development of chemical anchors and other recent innovations.

The paper introduces a newly developed multi-function test rig for fracture grouting. This test rig has many functions and its performance is consistent. It can control and adjust accurately the opening degree of fissures and static pres- sure; it can measure automatically the quantity of grout injected; it can measure precisely pressure drop of grout in fissures; it can test the results of injection, including effective dispersed distance, anti-filtration capacity of consolidated body, mechanical strength, etc. It can inject a single or two grouts into one or several fissures at a pressure of 16 MPa. Therefore, it is an ideal test rig for fracture injection. The paper depicts all the components of the test rig, its performance and application of the results obtained from fracture grouting tests. Blasting is known to be both an important and an easily quantified cost factor in rock breaking operations. However, the indirect costs and benefits of the blasting operation are not easily determined due to the irreversibility of the mechanisms involved and the multiplicity of influencing factors. A general conceptual model showing the relationship between blasting and mining costs is well known, but serious attempts to address the critical real relationships have all floundered on the fact that not enough is yet known about either detonation physics or blasting effects. This can only be remedied to the extent that blasting instrumentation enables researchers to pin down not only the relationship between the detonation process and its impact on a particular environment, but also the downhill costs of handling the rock, repairing any damage and building in "Safety Factors" to provide for imponderables. It is vital to standaraize on specifications for instrumentation and measurement techniques and there is a need to review what has been achieved in blasting expertise so as to focus on the most fruitful paths for future work.

Sintering of lead and zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to provide both desuiphurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulphur dioxide gas for sulphuric acid manufacture. From November, 1969 a 20 percent increase in production rate has been obtained through improvements in operating technique. A gradual increase in bed permeability was achieved by modifications to the feed mix conditioning equipment and by improving moisture control. However advantage could not be taken of the higher permeability to increase sulphur elimination because the hardness of the lump sinter decreased. Higher throughput, better quality sinter and more stable sintering conditions were however made possible by simultaneously: 1. reducing segregation and compaction in the sinter bed, by narrowing the discharge opening of the main layer feed hopper, 2. reducing the sizing of sinter returns to give a closer size spectrum of particles in the feed mix, and 3. increasing the sulphide sulphur content of the feed mix to give higher bed Temperatures.

Typical rehabilitation programmes for spoil piles and waste dumps in open cut coal mines involve the spreading of topsoil to assist vegetation growth. In the early years of rehabilitation before a protective vegetation cover has been established, this topsoil is susceptible to erosion during rainfall events. Since the long term success of rehabil- itation procedures is sensitive to adequate topsoil maintenance and since, on many mine sites, topsoil is a scarce resource, erosion losses of topsoil (particularly once fert- ilised) can severely restrict rehabilitation Measures.

Optimisation techniques, based on the block model, for solving the optimum pit limit problem were discussed in an earlier paper. Of the available techniques the one based on graph theory proved to be the most attractive. In the graph theory model the vertices represent blocks and the arcs represent the mining restrictions. For large ore-bodies direct application of the graph theory method poses considerable computational and storage problems. Techniques for easing the computational effort by reducingthe problem size were introduced in an earlier paper. Further, significant computational savings can be made by exploiting the structure of the graph. This is done by building the graph up level by level and successively applying the graph theory algorithm to reduce the number of blocks. In building up the graph in this way one needs what is called a "search pattern" to indicate which arcs are to be added as new vertices are introduced. Moreover, as it is essential to keep the number of arcs to a minimum it is necessary to establish a "minimum search pattern".The problem of determining minimum search patterns for any block model and for any wall slope restrictions has not been considered in the literature.The objective of this paper is to present a complete solution to this problem and to discuss, through typical case studies, the application of the associated software developed.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, the Pacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinen- tal metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly re- lated to S-type granite of crustal source, that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of min- eralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metalloge- netic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

In the future to excavate sufficient coal for power generation, two dredgers would be required to dig overburden or interseam 70010 of the time and three dredgers 40010 of the time. One overburden system was not adequate for this requirement, making coal production reliability vulnerable. TS5 spreader is the new machine element of this system. The selection of the best type of machine configuration to suit the application was then subject to an internal SECV VE Study, a registration of interest and a tender for two machine alternatives. This paper outlines the reasons why SECV planned the Secondary Overburden System and how the Krupp machine met these requirements. It also identifies the main design features of the machine and its constructability which will allow the machine to be operational by the end of May, 1990.

Tailings dams constructed by the upstream method have traditionally been built using the sand fraction of the tailings, which has automatically provided a relatively permeable embankment material, and helped provide the necessary drainage conditions which are a pre-requisite for safe and stable dam construction using this method. This paper discusses some recent trends which have resulted in proposals to use impermeable material in place of the sand fraction as the embankment material, both for the starter dam, and subsequent lifts. The consequences of these types of decisions on the overall stability of the dam are illustrated, and the need for continued monitoring of pore pressures in the tailings as the dam is raised is emphasised.

In July 1994 the Premier, John Fahey MP, announced that the New South Wales Government would make available a total of $40 million over six years in new funding for the Department of Mineral Resources. These funds are to be applied directly to the generation of regional geological and geophysical information. The Government's initiative known as `Discovery 2000', is aimed at providing a major boost to the exploration industry. The Government expects new discoveries to be made and new mines to be developed because of the initiative and, perhaps, the first ever commercial oil or gas production in New South Wales. The Government's return will come from increased economic activity, and from the increased royalty return from higher levels of production. Quality information is the key to successful exploration. In the highly competitive business of mineral and petroleum exploration high quality regional geological and geophysical information improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the area selection or project generation process. Using the `needle in the hay stack' analogy, Discovery 2000 will vastly improve industry's chances of finding the haystacks. It is up to the mineral and petroleum industries to find their respective `needles'. Careful target area selection is probably the most critical factor in mineral exploration. The ability to select the most prospective areas, or to identify prospectivity that others have failed to recognise, can make all the difference between success and failure. Government geological surveys clearly have a crucial role to play in providing the geoscientific information infrastructure that companies must have if they are to make the discoveries this country needs to pay its way in the world. It is the regional information generated by Governments that sets the scene for efficient exploration. This regional information includes regional aeromagnetics and radiometrics and gravity, regional geological mapping and tectonic analysis, and geoscientific databases. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (by various names) has been providing such information for over 100 years and has led the way in many aspects of the generation and dissemination of geological, geophysical and metallogenic Information.

The metallurgical works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company is situated on the Derwent Estuary, approximately five miles north of the city of Hobart and near a relatively dense housing area. Zinc concentrates, consisting chiefly of zinc and sulphur, have been roasted at Risdon for 53 years;- recently at rates of 1, 100 tons per day. The zinc content of the ores is converted to zinc calcine (ZnO), which is a dusty material. The calcine is leached with acid to form zinc sulphate, which is then electrolysed to make zinc. The sulphur is oxidised during roasting to sulphur dioxide, part of which is converted to sulphuric acid and part is dissolved in estuarine water which is then discharged to the Derwent Estuary.
