Separation in magnetic fluids is one of the modern techniques that offer a unique approach to material manipulation in a broad spectrum of industries. Its wide-scale application has been restricted so far for a variety of reasons, including limited throughput, inefficient recovery of magnetic fluids and the cost of commercially available magnetic fluids. This situation has changed recently. Very selective separators, with automated density control, capable of treating a variety of materials in a wide spectrum of densities and particle sizes have been built by DebTech and applied in the diamond industry. Technology for the recovery of magnetic fluids has been developed and low-cost magnetic fluids, with high magnetisation and low viscosity are being produced on a production scale. Scale-up of the technology has been addressed and units capable of treating large tonnages of material have been designed. Such a development thus offers the minerals industry a technology that surpasses the existing technologies in selectivity, efficiency and versatility

The Hunter Fracture Zone can be traced into the Fiji group, and onshore SE Viti Levu in the form of NE-trending morphostructures. NW- trending morphostructures offset the NE elements. Structural mapping of Suva Harbour indicates that the NE elements are grabens bordered by faulted monoclines. Faulting is characterised by block-rotations and dip-slip displacements. The NW morphostructures are faults displaying elements of both dip-slip and strike-slip movement. Structural overprinting suggests that the NW faults represent the youngest phase of deformation, and current seismic activity occurs on this trend. A conceptual, geomechanical model of the deformation invokes toppling and wedge failure at the edge of the Fiji platform, translating material downslope into the Hunter Fracture Zone. The interference pattern produced by the superposition of the NW on the NE structures consists of a series of circular features bearing superficial resemblance to volcanic centres. Known mineral deposits in SE Viti Levu correspond closely to these features. The formation of the circular features postdates mineral genesis, suggesting that the features provide a focus for the enhanced exposure of mineral deposits rather than a source of mineralisation. There is a close association between mineralised exposures and interference patterns in extensional structures in SE Viti Levu, and a correlation between these structures onshore, and the Hunter Fracture Zone cum South New Hebrides Trench offshore. Future mineral exploration in the SW Pacific will benefit by closer consideration of the geologic structure of Pacific islands bordering the extensional regimes of deep oceanic trenches.

Factors influencing Cost, systems available for transporting minerals, particularly on land, and methods used for comparing costs are reviewed. A case study presents comparative costs graphically for coal haulage, assumed in Queensland, by 31-6" gauge rail, belt conveyor, 120 ton road train, slurry pipeline, and transmission of electrical energy by transmission line. The effect on comparative results of alternative methods of including initial capital and capital replacement costs is considered and approximate break-even points between systems, bearing in mind the assumptions taken, are discussed.

Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. recommenced operations in early 1976 following a twelve year period of care and maintenance. Several sections of the plant were modified or completely changed for the second operation. The most important change was the replacement of ion exchange with solvent extraction as the means of purifying and upgrading uranium rich Isolutions Most of the problems experienced in the solvent extraction system originate from the leach liquor which has a strong tendency to form stable emulsions. This has been countered by some careful control of leaching conditions and by closer observation of operations in the solvent extraction area. Most problems have now been resolved and plant recoveries are quite Satisfactory.

Due to geographical location, AustraliaÆs economy and trading are closely related to Asia. With ChinaÆs increasing demand on resources and energy and Japan and KoreaÆs steady imports in these fields, AustraliaÆs mining industry is experiencing a so called æboomÆ period. Traditionally, engineers or skilled workers from South Africa, Britian or other parts of Europe moved to Australia for its mining industry. Now, more students from Asia are starting to choose mining engineering (similar choices include mining geology, metallurgy, geotechnical engineering and mining surveying) and expect to work in these fields. How does AustraliaÆs mining industry face such a situation? What kinds of challenges and opportunities do the mining industry and universities face? How do mining companies utilise these human resources? This paper concludes with an analysis of all these questions at an industrial level and some personal deduction as to the preferred course for international students.

Based upon the previous work of Norman and Loeb, a method, was used, to assess-the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa. The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating-under normal grinding conditions. At selected. intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.

The control of industrial grinding circuits in Australian concentrators has been practised for many years in one form or another. Some have established simple feedback loops in areas such as fine ore bin feeders (tonnage control), mill pump sump levels (flow control) and water additions (density control). There are also some sophisticated systems which infer circuit product size using complex measurements of mass flaws and water additions in the circuit and attempts are made to control those flaws to produce a constant circuit product size. The inferred size method in Australian concentrators has become firmly entrenched in the last ten years and control techniques involving the use of direct size measurements with reliable on-stream sizers have been Ignored.

During the 1960s chalcocite ore was mined from the Black Rock open cut. A large amount of this uneconomic material was not treated by the No 3 Concentrator at the time and as a consequence a surface stockpile was created which contained 750 000 tonnes of material at an average of 1.5 per cent copper.Laboratory trials indicated that due to oxidation, an average of 25 per cent of the copper was water soluble and the remaining copper was leachable using a sulphate/ferriclbacterial leach. On the basis of these trials it was decided to investigate the feasibility of producing copper via a leach SX-EW process. The investigation proved the process was feasible, so began the design, construction and commissioning of a 10 tpd (cathode copper) Copper Leach SX-EW Pilot Plant. CMPS Pty Limited in a joint venture with John Holland Engineering Pty Limited were awarded the turnkey contract for the design, construction and commissioning of the Pilot Plant.

The use of gravity concentration is, and has always been, the conventional primary method for gold recovery from alluvial deposits. The development of high capacity cone concentrators and metallurgically efficient wash-waterless spiral separators has had some impact in the technology for alluvial gold processing, but perhaps more significantly has led to the relatively recent use of this gravity concentration technology in grinding circuits of hard rock ore for "coarse" gold removal and for scavenging gold locked in sulphides from cyanidation tailings streams.Gravity concentration systems are relatively low-cost, non-polluting and energy efficient; and their judicial use in gold treatment plants can significantly reduce overall capital and operating costs.The application of modern gravity concentration technology to hard-rock and alluvial gold ore treatment is discussed. Flowsheets and test and operating data from a number of gold processing operations incorporating gravity concentration treatment are presented.

Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.

The energy crisis and the general increase in fuel prices have changed the position of coal in the world. Countries need to review their policies on coal, depending on available reserves and their accessibility. On the demand side, a distinction should be made between the steel industry's specific demand for coking coal and the needs of power stations where coal is used in competition with other sources of energy. Coal consumption in these two sectors is expected to increase considerably over the foreseable future. Some countries have sufficient coal of their own to meet this increased demand but others will have to rely on imports. As a result, the tonnage of coal transported by sea may double by 1985. The coal industry lacks flexibility. The opening of new mines and the construction of a transport system to ship the coal takes time. This time-lag, coupled with the enormous expenditure involved, makes long-term contracts between producers and consumers essential.

The developing countries whether they be in Africa, Asia or the Pacific, are a potentially vast market for the technologies of the more developed countries.Conducting business in the less developed countries however requires a keen understanding of their culture. A keystone of the culture of the Pacific Island Nations is kinship with the land. Without an appreciation of the implications of the land rights debate, a business venture into these countries is likely to be delayed or even doomed to failure.The European heritage, with its notions of private ownership of land, have frequently been a stumbling block to a proper understanding of the concepts of customary lands. According to our laws, ownership of land confers a number of definite rights: principally the right to use the land, the right to exclude others from its use, the right to transfer it and the right to receivF income from the property independent of use.

Mining education in Australia has undergone another cyclical downturn over the past five years and several departments have been discontinued while others are still teetering on the brink of destruction. During this downturn Curtin UniversityÆs WA School of Mines (WASM) has managed to stay alive and well, but this has not been by accident. This paper outlines some of the strategies and experiences that have kept WASM in a strong position and offers hope to other departments and schools elsewhere that are still experiencing difficulty. This paper is also directed at all mining departments and schools that are certainly going to see it all happen again after the next mining boom turns to bust.

A ground support system is a combination of individual reinforcement and surface support elements that work together to retain and contain the rock mass. The various elements are subjected to external loads and to interactive loading between individual ground support system components. This paper focuses on the challenges in determining the capacity and behaviour of mesh, recognizing that installed mesh can be subjected to several loading mechanisms. Field observations from underground hard rock mines demonstrate that there are multiple types of damage and modes of failure of mesh. However, these are difficult to reproduce in a laboratory environment. A critical review has shown that existing mesh laboratory testing rigs reproduce very limited loading conditions that may not be representative of underground conditions. Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. Copper entering a lead ,smelter in concentrate or from other sources is recoVered as matte and speiss which contain appreciable quantities of lead. The matte and speiss are usually sold to copper smelters to recover the copper content and also any gold and silver in these products, but the value of the lead is largely lost. Some copper plants pay for portion of the lead content, but regarded as a means of recovering lead it is more costly and less efficient than if the lead were recovered at the lead smelter.Because of the value of this lead loss, the metallurgy of copper recovery has assumed greater importance in recent years owing to the rise on the price of lead.Two processes are in use today to produce matte and speiss, namely the iron matte process and the soda matte process developed by the American Smelting and Refining Co. 1 in D.S.A. The latter process is characterised by a higher copper to lead ratio than the older iron matting process.The following analyses are typical of matte and speiss produced at Broken Hill Associated Smelters, by both processes, although the soda matte process is still in a developmental stage and experience indicates that matte and speiss of lower lead tenor can be produced under favourable conditions.

A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. The present day configuration of the deposit results from constructive thrust repetition of what may have been a single ore lens and destructive along-strike disruption controlled by rheology.CITATION:Blenkinsop, T G, Macklin, D and Hammond, R, 2015.
