The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. This paper deals with the current situation in the mining industry in Poland. An overview of typical transport systems working in the different branches of mining is provided. The transport systems currently used in lignite mining, particularly in the Belchat=w mine û the largest brown coal mine in Poland, and those operating in copper mines are described in detail. New designs of belt conveyors used in underground hard coal and copper mining are presented.

Mineral exploration and development can have a significant impact on the environment and local communities, in some circumstances extending well beyond the mine site. Poor environmental performance and consequent social impacts by some companies have affected the reputation of the whole industry to the extent that the principal public concern about mining is its impact on the environment. This is consistent with public attitudes about other major natural resource sectors such as forestry and commercial fishing. Traditionally the community has relied on governments to set the benchmark for acceptable environmental and social performance through establishing and revising regulations governing the mining industry. This however assumes that regulations keep pace with community expectations. It also does not take into account those circumstances where governments can have conflicting roles as both watchdog and project partner. Government regulations and industry self-regulation are not in of themselves sufficient for the minerals sector to demonstrate that it has adequately addressed environmental and social issues associated with the sector. For the minerals sector to improve its reputation it must first improve its environmental and social performance. To do this requires the sector to operate to acceptable standards of environmental and social performance and for the sector to be able to credibly communicate this to its stakeholders such as investors, non-government organisations (NGOs), customers, staff, regulators and local communities. Independent third party certification of environmental and social performance (æcertificationÆ), already operational in forest and fisheries management, is proposed as a mechanism to enable the minerals sector to achieve this. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and industry partners will be collaborating in a project to ascertain the applicability of æcertificationÆ to the minerals sector. A number of economic, social and environmental benefits are identified that could accrue should mining companies be able to differentiate themselves on the basis of environmental and social performance, an attribute evident in æcertificationÆ schemes. External audiences are seeking increasing levels of information and data on environmental and social performance of mining companies, be it local communities, investors, financial institutions or NGOs. Environmental and social reporting should be a key communications device that stakeholders can rely on as a reliable, credible source of information on environmental and social performance. WWFÆs contribution to the debate about environmental and social reporting has been to develop a process to assess the quality of environmental and social reports against reporting ingredients which WWF believe are important if a report is to be an accurate reflection of the reporting entitiesÆ environmental and social performance.

Mining companies worldwide have an increasing interest in restoring indigenous ecosystems following mining. Low levels of plant nutrients and organic matter, pH extremes, heavy metals, physically challenging media, and difficult climatic conditions all hinder revegetation of steep rockdump slopes. Our techniques use colonising pioneer plants to accelerate natural soil development and plant succession processes on minesites that are difficult to revegetate with locally sourced plants by traditional techniques. Suitable treatments and pioneer species must first be identified for each rocktype. Field trials at the Stockton Coal Mine in Buller have shown that successful acceleration of moss and pioneer plant establishment is possible. Best plots showed a mean of 15 per cent moss cover and 3.3 per cent vascular cover after 12 months compared with 0.1 per cent and nil respectively for controls. Techniques have been extended to field-scale trials, using hydroseeders and dryblowers. These techniques show potential for practical land rehabilitation, whilst conserving local biodiversity.

In order to avoid costly moisture penalties on coal shipments and to minimise rail freight costs, screen bowl centrifuges were selected and installed in the Mount Thorley Coal Preparation Plant for dewatering fine coal product. The Mount Thorley fine coal circuit consists of desliming the -0.5 mm (ww) fine coal in two stages of classifying cyclones prior to recovery by froth flotation. Provision has been made to bypass the flotation circuit with the classified flotation feed reporting directly to product and the centrifuge dewatering circuit has been designed to handle either flotation feed or flotation product. Major mechanical failures of the gearboxes and the ceramic tiling occurred early in the operation life of the machines which led to design changes being made to achieve satisfactory operation. This paper discusses the operating experience at Mount Thorley with respect to both mechanical and metallurgical performance of the screen bowl centrifuges since their installation in 1985.

Every text book for blasting in Japan says that Hauser's law can be applied for practice. But recently it came true that there was no historical record about him and no actual datum of his own or other's to testify. According to his theory, the funnel ratio N = r/W in crater test is inversely proportional to the rock strength and proportional to the explosive amount: where r is the radius of crater and W is the burden. But experiment showed the opposite result, and revealed new information. Two kinds of experiment, crater test and boulder blasting of mortar, were carried out to investigate the effects of rock properties on blasting. The material used for test 1 and test 2 was a mortar block (60cm)3 cube, 4 vertical faces of which were used for crater test. The results from Test 1 and test 2 were summarized as follows. The funnel ratio ranges between 2.5 to 4.5 in proportion to rock strength and burden. The standard ratio of 1, reported by Hauser, was not observed in any instances. It was also noted that the funnel ratio is independent of the explosive amount. The material used for boulder blasting, test 3, was a mortar block (40cm)3 cube, in the middle of which was located a vertical borehole for the explosive charge. The results of test 3 were as follows. The necessary explosive amount for boulder blasting is in inverse proportion to the mortar strength. Fragmentation and throw are proportional to the mortar strength.

The Mt Whaleback orebody is in a complex geological regime. A good understanding of geological structure is essential during the design and implementation stages. The amount of information on the rock-mass condition available at the design stage is considerably limited. It is essential to validate the rock-mass properties used in the design during implementation. It is important to achieve integrity of the final pit wall during development and to maintain the integrity until the end of its designed life for safe and economical extraction of ore. The original geological model is updated by way of on-going detailed geological face mapping. Original design is reassessed and is modified based on any significant variations to the previously evaluated geotechnical conditions. Information gathered during design implementation provide tools for effective management of the pit walls. Controlled blasting techniques are employed in the final limits blasting. Presplit blasting is used in most limits blasts. Presplit helps to maintain the integrity of the wall by venting excessive gases from the limits blast. This helps to reduce bedding dilation by gas penetration. Also, it helps to define the design batter for the operators for final batter trimming. Pyritic shale needs special attention during blasting due to its reacting nature. Cablebolting is applied in selective areas to secure small-scale potential instabilities. During the development phase, pit wall monitoring instruments are installed. These instruments are used to monitor the performance of the wall during and after excavation of the slope.

Engineered soil covers are used for final closure options for both waste rock and tailings disposal facilities. Currently, cover construction requires excavation of appropriate cover material from a nearby site. If no suitable materials are available, the mine operation may have to ship appropriate materials long distances to the site before the construction of the cover can even begin. This has led to the proposal to engineer cover materials using existing waste materials from the mining operation. The paper presented here describes the results of a laboratory scale testing program to evaluate the potential for blending waste rock, smelter slag and tailings for the creation of a suitable cover material at a site in Canada. Tailings from the local mill, waste rock and slag were collected in the field and blended to create a material with an air entry value similar to the tailings and with physical strength similar to the waste rock. Testing indicated this mixed material could be blended at a consistency of a paste and was suitable for pumping. It can also be compacted to a high-density material. The preliminary results show that it may be possible to blend waste rock, slag and tailings into a material that can be utilised in the construction of a water retaining cover.

The method is based upon overhand slice and fill, with hydraulically emplaced washery refuse as the filling material. Feasibility studies in the development of mining projects are fundamental to most investment decisions. It is important that the issues addressed and the degree of detail involved in feasibility studies are consistent with the investment decisions to be taken. Emphasis should be placed on a thorough analysis of critical project parameters prior to detailed investigations being undertaken into other activities which are not relevant to the decisions at hand. Therefore, the issues to be decided upon should be influenced significantly by the stage of development of the project and by the reliability of technical and financial information used in the study. Some of the more critical parameters of feasibility studies are commodity prices, inflation rates and discount rates. Advice is given on the selection of these inputs and also on their application in the feasibility study as the project progresses through its various development stages. The basic rule for correct design of a sample plant is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. However, this rule is often ignored in the design of sample plants to save capital costs. This is false economy, because the samples taken are likely to be seriously biased and the precision may be compromised. The introduction of bias is particularly serious, because no amount of replicate sampling and analysis will reduce bias once it is present and it is often quite difficult and expensive to subsequently rectify the problem due to space limitations around the primary sampling location. This is also true of secondary and tertiary sampling stages, particularly in terms of the relationship between particle size and retained sample mass. The best strategy is to seek expert sampling advice and design the sample plant correctly at the outset.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. The Collie River catchment, located approximately 200 km south of Perth, covers an area of around 2830 km2 and is the source of run-off to the Wellington Dam, an important irrigation water resource for the Collie Irrigation District. The salinity of the Wellington Dam has increased due to historical clearing and irrigators currently use water with salinity levels approximately twice that of the Murray River in South Australia (Water and Rivers Commission, 2001). The Collie River Salinity Situation Statement (2001), released by the Water and Rivers Commission (now the Department of Water), identified realistic actions that could achieve the salinity reduction target. Subsequent benefit-cost analyses and prefeasibility studies recommended the diversion of the most saline flows in the Collie River away from the dam as an immediate intervention (URS, 2003). The East Branch of the Collie River above the locality of Buckingham (20 km east of Collie) contributes around half of the salt that flows into the Wellington Dam and the diversion and storage of the saltiest flows from the East Branch at Buckingham was identified as a viable option for reducing salinity in Wellington Dam. The proposal had one problem û the water could not be disposed of as quickly as it was diverted. However, in the vicinity of the diversion site were a number of coal mine voids and after preliminary discussions, the Government/Griffin Coal alliance was formed and from this the opportunities have continued. Diverted water would be stored temporarily in an adjacent mine void (Chicken Creek 4 void) and then disposed of to the sea. The disposal options included Western Power CorporationÆs saline discharge pipeline from Collie Power Station, or a new pipeline. The diverted water was also identified as a potential raw source for treatment and use in industry. This has opened up opportunities including desalination, water efficiencies in the power stations, increased reliability of water supply for the power stations, water for new industries, wastewater disposal options and extra water for PerthÆs water supply. In the process of solving the water storage problems the project introduced a range of mine water quality problems û heavy metals and pH û and the Department of Water (DoW) is now working with the mining industry and the Centre for Sustainable Mine Lakes (CSML) to develop treatment and management technologies. The project has received support and funding through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and it has been possible to accelerate and enhance this project as a result of NAP. The DoW has developed the proposal to an advanced stage and gained approvals for the capital diversion program to go ahead. The partnerships have expanded to include the second mining company, Premier Coal, the Water Corporation, Western Power and the Harvey Irrigation Cooperative. The proposal could feasibly result in a $90 million integrated water management initiative for Collie using the latest technology, mining operations and providing water for value adding industries in the local area. The DoW is not a mining company; however, our experience in managing water in times of shortage, environmental water quality criteria, competition for water and managing community expectations will have the same success factors:consultation and knowing your community and stakeholders, sharing issues and working in partnership can provide results far greater than the initial issue, even brackish water has value, every sector is in competition with each other and has to have a share of the water, an integrated approach can provide opportunities for development in areas of water shortage, and never think of water as wastewater.

Getting it right is a very profitable outcome. Shareholders would ideally like to see their directors get it right all the time on the major economic decisions. But it is very difficult for mining directors to get it right all the time in such an uncertain environment. Primary decision-makers of companies with significant stakes in the mining industry should get it right much more frequently. The legal measures of evidence (beyond reasonable doubt and on the balance of probabilities) can be used to determine whether grade estimates (a key revenue variable) are realistic. The application of this approach can be far reaching. More frequently correct decision-making would result in more effective allocation of limited resources (capital and labour). In turn, this would result in higher financial returns and a more extensive mining industry.

The development of Mount Isa Mines Limited power supply is traced through the history of the mine operations. As would be expected, growth of the power supply system follows closely the increase in mine output, although it will be seen that total kWh. produced per ton milled shows a considerable reduction in later years when the mine output showed a more rapid rate of increase. That this reduction is not more marked is possibly due to the increased community and Shire Council power usage per head of population.INTRODUCTIONThe geographical position of Mount lsa, far from any large regional power supply Authority, dictated the policy that the Company be responsible for the production and suppiy of all power required for the plant operation. The Company also, in November 1937, accepted responsibility for the supply of a part of the power requirements of the township of Mount Isa. The history of power supply to the Mine may be divided into several phases.1. The supply Of lighting and power during the first plant construction period 1929-1931.2. The construction of the first section of the Mines Power Station, comprising Nos. 1 and 2 turbo alternators and boilers.3. The addition of No. 3 turbo alternator and boiler.4. The addition of No. 4 turbo alternator and boiler.5. The addition of No. 5 boiler.6. The addition of a. 2 turbo blowers for air supply to the Copper Smelter converters; b. 1 turbo blower for air supply to the L.ead Smelter; c. 2 turbo compressors for compressed air supply to the Mine and surface plant.

In Finland fogging in mine ramps is a common problem. Fog forms when warm and humid exhaust air moves upwards the ramp, where the skin temperature of surrounding wallrock decreases to about 10¦C. Changes in fog thickness and lengths of fog-filled parts of the ramp depend at least on climatic conditions outside, diesel equipment usage in the mine, and the length of working sequence at a time. In this study fogging problems in three different mines, namely Orivesi mine, Louhi mine and PyhSsalmi mine, with different ore types, different layouts, and different depths are presented and compared. All these mines use diesel equipment and the ramp is used as an exhaust air route. In two of these mines the ramp is used as a haulage road and in the other for supply and repairing, checking, and surveying purposes. Measurements of humidity, temperature, air velocity, and dust content were performed in these mines. The measurement results, as well as field observations are presented, compared, and discussed. The results show that fog is observed in areas with high relative humidity values when air temperature and dew point temperature are less than 3¦C apart from each other. Air velocity values were high in many areas. In addition, measured particle concentration values were mainly high in areas, where fog was observed. A short literature review of recent fog formation studies is also presented. It demonstrates the complicacy of the fog formation process. Similarities and differences concerning fog problems in the ramps are found and presented. As already a lot of new information is gained, the continuation of research is considered plausible to find more economical ways of solving and preventing this problem in the future.

The discovery of minerals in any community, especially precious minerals, gives a sense of hope and optimism about development prospects within the community. However, the euphoria surrounding such a find could be short lived if the wrong perception is created at the inception of the project, that the exploitation of the mineral resource will pose a serious problem to the community. The socio-economic impact can be negative or positive but if not properly handled, the negatives will outweigh the positives. Illegal mining activity, popularly known as Galamsey in Ghana, is a typical example of the negative impact of the mineral industry. Galamsey activities have resulted in an increase in school drop-out rate, pollution of water bodies affecting entire communities bringing a lot of health problems, destruction of farm lands, destruction of rail lines resulting in transportation problems, armed robbery, prostitution, just to mention a few. The improvement of the water supply system in the surrounding communities, implementation of sustainable development programs, improvement in the infrastructure, are just a few examples of positive socio-economic impact.Factors responsible for the socio-economic and environmental impact include: the unwillingness of most companies to invest substantial resources to deal with environmental issues, lack of adequate professionals with the requisite appreciation for environmental issues related to their activities, realisation that support of surrounding communities is key to successful operations, the now globally accepted view that multinational companies should invest in the socio-economic lives of the surrounding communities, etc. In order to ensure the prevention of the negative impact of mining activities on local communities, there should be a paradigm shift in the way the training for the new crop of mining and metallurgical engineers have been structured in the past, social contract with the local communities must be drawn and implemented; it must not be an imposition on the communities but rather a contract arising out of extensive interactions between the industries and the local communities. Environmental awareness has reached a level where communities affected by the minerals industry, to a very large extent, know what they should tolerate and what they should not. There is therefore the need to ensure that effective systems are in place to exploit mineral resources without damaging the environment.

The treatment meIhods selected for the concentrator at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. called for a high degree of automatic control of both the grinding and flotation sections.The resulting concentrator layout includes a central control room overlooking both grinding and flotation sections. The control room houses process recorders, controllers, and indicators. together with motor stopstart stations and alarms.Plant instrumentation includes load cells and variable speed hydraulic drive feeders for feed-rate control of autogenous mills, together with nuclear density gauges, differential flow transmitters, and pneumatic control valves for water and pulp density control.Flotation cell pulp levels are controlled by floats and pneumatic actuators; flotation reagent controls include magnetic flowmeters and time-operated solenoid valves.

The paper describes the studies conducted to date on the short term adsorption/desorption of gases in coal from the point of view of developing techniques to predict imminent outbursting conditions in coal mines. A number of different parameters such as'dP express, K' and AV 0/60 etc. which have been effectively used overseas were studied on samples of coal from Westcliff and Leichhardt Colliery. Results indicate that these do not seem to be valid indices for predicting an outbursting condition. Based upon desorption isotherms, a new index defined as "L" has been developed which shows promising results. This index is in a position to differentiate the changes in the structures of coal and its proness to outbursts. The "LZ value determinations and its usefulness opens a new field where it would be possible to determine outbursting conditions from existing drill cores obtained during exploration studies or from long holes drilled in advance from underground workings. The index is more or less independent of the time elapsed between the extraction of a sample and the conduct of the test. The test for "L" can be conducted'on site or in the laboratory. The test is simple, easy to carry out and the "L" value for a sample can be calculated in less than 20 minutes. It could be adapted as a routine test for monitoring outburst conditions in mines.

Mining is a high risk, high capital and potentially high reward undertaking. A large proportion of the risk comes from a lack of definition of the orebody (which also provides some of the potential) and the unpredictable nature of the market. This makes the planning process difficult but encourages the development of a robust yet flexible mining system. The system should be capable of absorbing some deviation from the anticipated concept without a significant impact on profitability. The mine planning process tends to consist of a series of related but discrete stages. For instance, the pit shells are designed, a schedule for the pit shells is created, a plant fleet is chosen to achieve the schedule and a financial analysis is carried out on that scenario. It is likely a few iterations are carried out using various mill throughputs to produce a favoured financial result. The problem is that handing results from stage æBÆ for use in æCÆ doesnÆt encourage a flexible system. æCÆ is likely to be built for exactly æBÆ. Unfortunately, in mining, æAÆ (the orebody) has the highest potential for variability and impacts everything else downstream. æDÆ the market also has high potential for unplanned variability. These variations can spread and æreverberateÆ through the whole mine process. For example an unexpected increase in ore oversize impacts all downstream mine processes to the primary crusher which may in turn create problems back æupstreamÆ by restricting throughput rate. Also an unexpected drop in demand or price could require modifications to the planned production rates. This paper looks at how mining process simulation can be used to support the development of strategies to counteract unforseen circumstances or alter production to match fluctuations in demand and price.
