Fluidised Bed Combustion technology has expanded since the first fluidised bed boiler steamed in 1974 with 58 companies currently supplying units. In Australia the market has been in small boilers and the goal of a limited attendance coal fired boiler has been achieved. On the world scene, the major incentive for development has been emission control with sulphur capture and low NOX. The potential of significant reduction in plant size is encouraging development of pressurised fluidised bed combustion.

The Palmarejo, Guadalupe and La Patria Silver-Gold epithermal vein deposits occur in south-westernChihuahua state, Mexico. The veins are hosted in a volcano-sedimentary sequence that comprises andesitic to basaltic resedimented volcaniclastic rocks, together with less abundant coherent and pyroclastic facies and minor red-beds. The host sequence is part of the Lower Volcanic Series, and formed in a magmatic arc environment during the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Laramide Orogeny. The Lower Volcanic Series is overlain unconformably by an extensive sequence of Miocene rhyolitic ignimbrites, known as the Upper Volcanic Series. At this time, it is uncertain whether epithermal mineralisation was related to andesitic intrusions (85 Ma) and/or Oligocene rhyolitic dykes (25 Ma). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Consistent slag blow end point detection remains one of the challenges in the Peirce-Smith converters at Mount Isa MinesÆ Copper Smelter. Under blowing results in foaming on copper blow and carry forward of oxide skims to the anode furnace. Over blowing results in high copper losses to the slag. Both present safety issues and contribute to lower copper production. The end points of the slag making phases are assessed by inspection of a bar sample. A bar sample is a thin accretion layer that adheres to a steel bar when it is inserted into the tuyere while the converter is blowing. This method is biased and subjective, so there is heavy reliance on operator experience. The Semtech Optical Process Control (OPC) system was installed in early 2002 for converter slag blow end point detection. Initial plant trials did not improve all aspects of converter operations, and uptake by operators was poor, so the system was not used. In early 2005, the Semtech OPC system was re-visited and another short trial was conducted to evaluate the permanent use of the system for slag and copper blow end point detection. During this trial, the Semtech OPC method was found to be superior to bar sampling for slag blow end point detection. The implementation and refurbishment of the Semtech OPC system has resulted in plant improvements and given a better insight into converter operation during blowing. Oxide skim generation carried forward to the anode furnace has been shown to decrease with increasing compliance with Semtech OPC. Some of the expected improvements to converter operation were not found to be significant. Semtech OPC is now well received and utilised by converter operators. Individual paper available only. A novel method utilizing PIXE with microbeams following fire-assay has been developed to determine PGE and Au at sub-ppm levels suitable for application in exploration. Analyses of the prills from the lead and silver fire-assay yield Pt, Pd and Au concentrations readily. NiS must be used as collector if the complete suite of PGE is required, but this method is not as Convenient.

This paper presents an analysis of significant Australian-based R&D programs focussed on the minerals industry, which was commissioned by CRC ORE. The landscape analysis may assist organisations with R&D management issues including program creation, program/partner selection, portfolio management, and public policy settings. The dataset was collated early in 2020, and contains programs being conducted by or with Australian-based ‘Research Service Providers’ (RSPs), most notably Universities and CSIRO. It does not include R&D being conducted in-house by mining and METS companies, or by them with other organisations that are not RSP’s. The dataset contains 65 R&D programs, with total annual cash funding of $229m (70% from industry and 30% from government). The total funding compares unfavourably with the combined R&D expenditure of Australian universities and CSIRO of over $12b, and minerals industry export revenues of over $200b. The R&D landscape is analysed by program numbers and funding, technical domain, geography, and funding source. Areas of relative strength are noted in ‘mineral processing’, CSIRO Minerals, and the CRC program. Areas of relative weakness are noted in ‘bulk materials handling and logistics’, ‘tailings and waste management’, and ‘social and community’. The field of preconcentration is noted as a current area of R&D strength, but it is under significant threat with the impending completion of CRC ORE. The overall R&D landscape is characterised by a majority of small-scale programs, low levels of industry coordination, a low focus on step-change innovation, and total funding lower than should be expected for such a large critical industry. It is hoped that key stakeholders in the Australian minerals industry, particularly governments, and mining and METS companies, reflect on the analysis and act to address holistic weaknesses.

Longwall faces producing in the order of 20,000 tons per day of raw coal are presently running in the Houilleres du Bassin de Lorraine of Charbonnages de France. Production levels of twice that level pose some technical and economic problems of coal cutting, ventilation, coal and equipment transportation in the.face and from the face to the sur- face. The peak productions of the equipment in use today, the results of trials with new equipment, the utili- sation of forecasting models (some in the form of software), allow us to fo- resee feasable technical solutions to these problems. They will first be considered in the best possible context (thick- ness, dip, non gassy, soft coal, good strata, no faults). This will give. the necessary conditions to reach daily output'of that level. A sensitivity analysis of these- figures to the effective natural con- ditions will then be undertaken and the implication of such a project on health and safety (dust, climate ...) will be carefully considered. A concise technical and econo- mical approach will permit us to fore- cast the economical interferences of such production units and specially the consequences of sudden variations of the output (downtimes, failures, etc). From this investigation, goals for technological development and re- search areas will be outlined to be able to reach this production target in the XXIst century.

Computer software has been developed to link real-time information generated by underground mine ventilation airflow monitoring sensors into a network simulation program to undertake network simulations and allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. Results were used in the development of a computerised monitoring and simulation system to provide immediate or real-time data on air behaviour within each branch of an underground mine ventilation network through linking of sensors to the ventilation network simulation software. The outcome of the project is an online system that can report changes in the mine ventilation system, allow causes of changes to be isolated and rectified, improve balancing of available air throughout the mine, allow improved approaches to regulator setting and dispense with much of the labour used for underground ventilation measurement. The work activities in both coal and metalliferous Australian mines have involved examination and modelling of regulators, software modification and considerable mine site testing and optimising activities. There is some discussion on approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information. New systems will be part of a total mine information management system. They will have to be cost effective and justified by gains in productivity. New systems will need to provide simulation of contaminant production such as diesels, vehicle heat, strata heat, radiation, blast fumes and other gases. More robust real-time ventilation simulation systems will be required. Personnel and vehicle identification and production tracking will be collected to provide integrated ventilation system monitoring and control. This paper examines a study to gain greater understanding of computerised real-time airflow monitoring and control within the mine production system to provide immediate simulated information in each branch of an underground ventilation network and to allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. A case study implementing a real-time airflow monitoring and control is discussed. Approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information are discussed. The concept of a system that can be linked to or be part of a total mine information management system is developed. Such a system can form the base for mine automation that allows mines to incrementally and cost effectively implement monitoring and control to further seek gains in productivity.

A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the high temperature cracking of crude oils. Knelson concentrators are commonly used to recover fine liberated gold in gold processing plants. The decision to employ a gravity gold circuit consisting of centrifugal devices such as Knelsons is primarily taken on the results of GRG tests, among other considerations. While the GRG test is considered a material characterisation test, which is useful in the design stages, its use in evaluating the performance of an existing unit is questionable. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that it is time consuming and costly. This paper examines the validity of the GRG test for performance evaluation and discusses alternative test work that can be performed to evaluate the performance characteristics of an operating machine. Principles that are useful in selecting optimal operating parameters, such as optimal fluidising water flow rate for a given ore/machine combination, are also discussed and illustrated with laboratory and plant data.

A 32-channel PSS seismic monitoring system was commissioned at Mt Charlotte mine in 1994, and at the time it was the first such system in Australian mines. The system continuously observes the occurrence of seismic events and locates them accurately in space and time. Mt Charlotte has a history of seismicity, with the largest event in recent years of Richter magnitude 4.3. The decision to 'go seismic' was made despite some uncertainty regarding its potential usefulness. However after the first year of operation, benefits have been realised in terms of less production downtime, improved mine safety and mine planning, and better understanding of the nature of Mt Charlotte seismicity. The seismic network has performed well, recording 550 events in its first year of operation to a location accuracy averaging ¦ 12 metres. System reliability is excellent, with very little downtime, and acceptable operation and maintenance times and costs. Observations show major distinct changes in the rate of mining induced seismicity over time periods of weeks and months. Events have tended to cluster in specific mine areas and on particular faults and structures. Case examples of pillar preconditioning, breakout around an orepass, and a major stope rockburst, illustrate the role of seismic data and the benefits it brings to safety, productivity and planning.

ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. Control of silicon in produced through the submerged-arc furnace can result in reduced power and coke consumption in addition to improving the quality of the hot metal. A thermo-chemical analysis of the production of ferro-chromium was carried out to devise strategies to control the recovery of silicon during the manufacture of ferro-chromium. The presence of three thermochemical zones in the furnace with respect to the reduction of silica was recognised from this analysis. Any strategy for the control of silicon recovery has to take cognizance of these thermochemical zones. The effect of various strategies on the silicon level in the hot metal have been evaluated. Possible strategies, such as the reduction of coke level in the charge; the replacement of quartz; pre-reduction of the ore and the control of the temperature profile are discussed in this paper.

Major exploration companies can have a problem with what to do with small precious metal ore bodies located through exploration programmes. Low tonnage, but high grade, ore bodies too small to justify in-house development.1.2 Ban Ban Mining is a Sunshine Coast based partnership with considerable expertise in mining and earthmoving which specializes in the mining of small/medium size ore bodies on behalf of the tenement holder on a profit sharing or royalty basis.1.3 The partnership's first successful venture has been the mining and vat leaching of a small 40,000 tonne ore body with a head grade of 5 gm/tonne gold and 32 gms/tonne silver, situated near Ban Ban Springs in southeast Queensland.1.4 This paper looks at the low cost vat leaching method of treatment, as an alternative to CIP and CIL in the processing of low tonnage/high grade precious metal ore bodies.

The current Mining Act has been the mechanism for administering and encouraging the State's mining industry through the 1970's up to the present. Although it has been subjected to considerable amendment there continues to be judicial challenge as well as criticism in relation to ambiguity of interpretation. Expansion of the mining industry and pressures placed upon "it by the ever increasing interaction with other land users have highlighted deficiencies in the current legislation and the need for a strong and progressive Act covering the rights and obligations of miners and their relationships with those outside the industry. - It is considered that the most positive results can be achieved by a complete redrafting of Queensland's mining administrative legislation.

40 percent of the coal reserves and 40 percent of the ouput of coal in China is of thick coal seams. The sub-level caving in Yangguan has evolved together with the hydraulic supports, to provide recovery rates today of 80 to 85 percent, waste ratios less than 10 percent and daily outputs exceeding 7,000 tonnes. Matching of rate of shearing bottom coal to caving of top coal is most important to achieve "simultaneous" operations. Spontaneous combustion in the goat, gas, including in the goal, and dust, are particular safety hazards which are combatted with various stringent measures.

Trench cutter systems have been used in civil engineering for the least 30 years for the installation of deep cut-off walls, retaining walls and foundation systems. The systems are constantly advanced to achieve greater depth, penetrate through harder rocks a provide a bigger footprint of the cutter. The state-of-the-art equipment can reach down to 250 m vertical depth and penetrate all different types of soils and rocks up to 150 MPa unconfined compressive strength.In mining, especially in commodities with a high value and where the ore deposit has a small footprint, cutter mining with vertical attack from the existing ground level will be a new, cost-efficient approach where conventional open pit mining is not economically feasible due to a high stripping ratio. The same applies for open pit mines that have reached the end of their conventional mine life and where going underground is also uneconomical. The BAUER Cutter Mining System, which has been adapted to the special needs of mining, is a new technology that will allow mining at depths of up to 250 m.The same system can be also applied to ore dykes, be it vertical or slightly inclined, concentrating the excavation on the actual orebody and minimising the strip ratio and the contamination of ore. The system can be adapted to the dimension of the dykes or veins and to the rock conditions.BAUER’s latest approach is to use the vertical cutter mining technology for the extraction of sea floor massive sulfides from the seabed in deep ocean waters. Due to the compact footprint of the system and the vertical attack for mining, extraction of the ore can be concentrated on the hot spots, minimising the environmental impact on the sea floor both for mining and manoeuvring the remote-controlled mining tool.CITATION:Schwank, S K, 2015. The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. Cadia Hill Pit is a gold copper porphyry deposit hosted in monzonite. The pit slope design is primarily based on structural controls related to faults and shears with largely massive rock masses between the structures. The slope design attempts to achieve an optimum configuration at a bench to overall scale, considering economics and safety implications against the geotechnical and structural conditions. To date the slopes have been mined at interramp angles of up to 60¦ over heights of 120 m. Limited slope and batter failures that have occurred are structurally controlled and occur rapidly. The pit-mining schedule requires concurrent mining of part of the final pit walls and the progressive interim cutbacks. Engineering and operational solutions to hazard reduction and risk management issues have been implemented wherever viable to æengineerÆ out the hazard and mitigate the risks. However, comprehensive management plans and operating procedures have also played a vital role. This paper details the management plan and the operating procedures that have been developed and implemented to mitigate the risks associated with rock falls.
