A number of hydrometallurgical treatment methods are being developed to extract copper from chalcopyrite flotation concentrate including microbial leaching and ferric sulfate leaching. However, chalcopyrite is difficult to process efficiently by hydrometallurgical methods as it exhibits slow reaction kinetics. Comparative leaching tests do not always satisfactorily explain or predict observed copper recovery, acid consumption, or differential leaching of minerals. This is especially true when reactive gangue constituents are present. The aim of this study was to determine how the leaching regime (microbial versus ferric sulfate) affects both the extraction of copper and residue mineralogy. Chalcopyrite flotation concentrate was leached at 30¦C and 65¦C using a pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and a mixed consortium of thermophiles, respectively. In addition, the concentrate was leached at the same temperatures using 0.1 M ferric sulfate. Microbial leaching of chalcopyrite extracted more copper than ferric sulfate oxidation of chalcopyrite at 30¦C, demonstrating that the microbes promoted the solubilisation of copper at this temperature. This result was confirmed by leach solution analyses and residue analysis using quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD). More chalcopyrite was oxidized with ferric sulfate at 65¦C than at 30¦C (as expected). QXRD confirmed that pyrite reacted during ferric sulfate leaching at 65¦C but was relatively unreactive during lower temperature leaching. The high ferric ion concentration in the ferric sulfate leach at 65¦C led to significant precipitation of jarosite. This phase was only detected in small amounts at 30¦C in both the microbial and ferric leached residues. Sulfur also precipitated in the ferric leaching at 65¦C whereas no sulfur was detected in the microbial leached residue. Quartz was a relatively unreactive mineral phase regardless of the leaching medium and temperature. QXRD analysis indicated the residue mineralogy differed with different leaching regime.

In Europe there are many regions, where coal or lignite is mined with surface methods. In most of these regions coal/ lignite is mined below groundwater table and mining opera- tions require pumping big volumes of water. Drawdown of groundwater table has influence on surface water and ground- water on adjacent areas. Mine drainage requires purification and its discharge changes flow in existing streams. Some of mine water is used by mining companies themselves, some is used by other industries, some for communal purposes and some for irrigation. However, majority of mine water is dis- charged to rivers without use. The above issues are discus- sed on the background of general, technical and water charac- teristics of such regions in B European countries. Conclu- sions and prospects for future complete the paper.

An overburden blast utilising horizontal blast holes was successfully attempted at the Ulan Coal Mines during December 1991. The blast reduced operational problems and costs and improved dragline productivity in an area of that contains poorly consolidated sands and clays overlying very hard Permian strata.The fan shaped shot consisted of seven 250 mm diameter holes between 80 and 95 metres long drilled into the highwall face. The holes were loaded with ICI Powergel Gold 25606 bulk Emulsion explosive. The design powder factor was 0.15 kg/bcm for the total shot of 180 000 bcros and 0.44 kg/bcm for the competent Permian strata into which the holes were drilled. Fragmentation from the horizontal blast was comparable to areas conventual blasted. Following the success of this shot further shots are planned for this area.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and Sn- Ag deposits of Bolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolomr, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolomd area.

An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the various gas flow characteristics of bituminous coal samples. Adsorption and desorption tests were first conducted to estimate the quantity of methane that is retained by coal, and the rate at which it is released. Experiments were then carried out to study the variation in coal permeability with changes in applied stress and gas pressure - factors that change continuously with time. To further understand the phenomena involved in retention, release, and flow of gas, electron microscopy was used to study the microstructure of coal and how it affects these characteristics of coal.

The Sapan Dalam coal deposit of Indonesia consists of ten steeply dipping seams with thicknesses varying between 0.1 and 3.5 m and split by shale, clay, silt and sandstone. The area contains four faults dipping about 75¦ with four to 85 m vertical displacements. The complex nature of the deposit coupled with limited 27 exploration drillholes at an average spacing of 200 m made it difficult to create a realistic geological model. A three-dimensional gridded seam model gave a fair representation of the deposit. Attempt to create an optimum pit using the WHITTLE 3D pit optimiser proved unsuccessful since the pit optimiser is restricted to standard regular or fixed blocks. The gridded seam model was converted to a fixed block model prior to the optimum pit design. Smoothing and pit base controlling were also introduced to obtain a smoother pit. A mining scenario produced 3.6 million tonnes of coal, 28.4 million bcm of waste and US$18.1 million revenue.

The Mammoth Copper Deposit consists of three distinct orebodies adjacent to the Mammoth Fault. This fault is arcuate, changing from a normal tension fault to a shear strike fault just to the north of the mine. Movement on the fault was probably contemporaneous with deposit- ion of the adjacent sediments. In the upper levels the No. 1 orebody occurs within a brecciated zone in the footwall of the fault, but at depth the No. 2 and 3 orebodies are stratabound by two brecciated lithologic horiz- ons. The host rocks are impure sandstones, arkoces and quartzites, which in the mine area are near the top of the Lower Proterozoic Myally Beds. Overlying these beds is a conglom- erate siltstone sequence which has been assumed to be the base of the Gunpowder Creek Formation. North and south of the mine the conglomerate rests on an erosional unconformity representing a major time break, but in the mine the uncon- formity and conditions of deposition of the conglomerate are obscure. Some mineralization is contained within the conglomerates. The sulphides present are chalcocite, bornite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Chalcocite is dominant in the upper levels but could be en- riched by supergene processes. At depth, bornite becomes the dominant copper sulphide with lesser amounts of chalcopyrite, pyrite and primary chalcocite. Throughout the orebody minor digenite and covellite occur and arsenic is a minor constituent bound up with the pyrite. The bulk of the sulphides occur in stringers, fractures and breccia interstices but finer grained primary bedded sulphides can be observed. The genesis is probably a complex process in- volving active tectonic movements extending from deposition to post lithification giving numerous phases of brecciation and redistribut- Ion.

The geochemistry of waste rock from mining operations is critical to the development of acidity-related environmental problems during mining operations, and following mine closure. Failure to recognise the potential for waste rock to produce acidic oxidation products may cause mobilisation of heavy metals into ground and surface waters, and create heavy metal levels in soils which are toxic to plants, causing the failure of revegetation programs. Although more usually associated with wet tropical environments, the potential exists for these problems to occur even in and regions such as the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia unless appropriate pre-planning is undertaken.Acidity-related mine waste problems can be extremely expensive to rectify, but can be avoided by waste rock characterisation, and pre-planning of waste rock deposition based on this information. Integration of knowledge of waste rock geochemistry with geotechnical engineering, and application to likely problems, is essential for the successful planning and implementation of cost-effective strategies to avoid problems occurring. Pre-planning to avoid problems is likely to be significantly less expensive in most cases than remedial actions to rectify problems after they have occurred, and in fact may involve no additional cost if it requires only rescheduling or redesign of existing or planned Activities.

Prior to 1975, most geochemical drainage surveys for gold were based on analyses for pathfinder elements, such as As and Cu, rather than direct analysis for gold, for two reasons. Firstly, analytical methods lacked the required sensitivity and precision to determine gold abundance at background levels in stream sediments (usually in the range 1 - 10 ppb). Direct analysis was also inhibited by concern about the potential for gross sampling error, brought about by the dispersion of gold as rare discrete particles of the extremely dense native metal. This sampling error, commonly termed the 'nugget effect' has two components: erratic distribution of the element within the stream environment, related to hydraulic factors, and the difficulty in taking representative samples, both in the field and later in sub-sampling for analysis. In more recent years the collection of very large samples was commonly advocated to overcome the sampling problem (Hams, 1982; Nichol, 1986).Two methods have been widely used to evaluate the gold content of bulk samples (Elliott and Towsey, 1989). The preparation and analysis of heavy mineral concentrates has in recent years been largely superseded by the leaching of gold contained in bulk samples by cyanide, commonly termed the BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) or BCL (Bulk Cyanide Leach) methods. The terms BLEG and BCL are essentially interchangeable and the latter will be adopted for the remainder of this paper. The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.

Block caving is the lowest cost underground mining method but it has relatively high risks and a high up-front capital and development cost. It has application to large, often lower-grade orebodies where high production rates can provide good returns on the investment. However, it has a range of technical risks that are peculiar to block caving and the usual financial, political and environmental risks that may be exacerbated by the long lead-in times associated with the development of a block cave operation. With initial development costs that may be $100 M to $1000 M when the building of a treatment plant is also required, it is obviously important to minimise and manage the risks. In a greenfield project, commitment to a substantial proportion of the capital expenditure may be required to gain access to the deposit, and the decision to proceed at this stage would be based very largely on interpretations of drill hole data. In established mines the data may be supplemented by geological mapping and past experience, etc. The quality of this data is critical and yet it is frequently degraded through poor techniques and avoidable omissions. The final decision to proceed would be assessed on projected commodity prices, mining capital and operating costs, dilution and run of mine ore grades. The latter will vary over the life of the project and these can be estimated with drawdown or draw control modelling techniques. In this modelling, there are further risks in the assumed modelling parameters or that the modelling technique may not be applicable or appropriate. The paper addresses the most critical technical and operational risk areas and provides some practical precautions that can be taken to reduce these and improve the reliability of the geological and geotechnical models.

Geostatistical simulation has been widely used in mineral resource classification of metalliferous deposits based on international standards such as JORC code which is one of the most extensively used around the world for reporting the mineral resources and ore reserves alongside with objectives of the companies (Sadeghi, Madani and Carranza, 2015). However, the modeling process becomes challenging whenever the relationship between the variables of interest is complicated and cumbersome to model. This characteristic sometimes manifests itself in complex spatial and global cross-correlation measures, deeply depending on the formation and genesis of the deposit. The objective then is to generate the models that not only reproduces these significant characteristics, but also, it leads to a better understanding of a mineral resource estimation and successive decision-makings. In this respect, there are different approaches taking into account the spatial correlation structures, for which can be classified as independent simulation, co-simulation, and factor-based methodologies. In this paper, three techniques: Turning Bands Independent Simulation (TBSIM), Turning Bands Co-Simulation (TBCOSIM) and Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform (PPMT); from those aforementioned approaches are selected to model two cross-correlated variables (Iron and Aluminum Oxide) belonging to an Iron ore deposit located in Brazil, in order to examine which methodology better reproduces the corresponding complexity in terms of local correlation measure. Dartbrook (Hunter Valley and South Bulli (Southern Coalfield) Collieries provide contrasting settings for gas sorption studies. Gas compositions at Dartbrook are dominated by carbon dioxide, with minor methane, while those at South Bulli are dominated by methane with minor carbon dioxide. Total gas contents at Dartbrook are also significantly greater than those at South Bulli. The two collieries are also contrasted in terms of coal composition and mining environment. Dartbrook Colliery mines a relatively small sectionb(4m) of very thick seam (up to mapproximately25m); the coal is vitrinite-rich, high volatile bituminous. South Bulli mines most of the seam thickness, with coal being an intertinite-rich, medium volatile bituminous coal.Coal samples have been collected from in-seam gas drainage holes for evaluation of relative gas desorption rate (methane versus carbon dioxide). Following adsorption isotherms, petrography, chemistry (proximate and ultimate analysis) and pore structure analysis (carbon dioxide surface area, mercury porosimetry). Bomb desorption studies indicate different behaviours for methane desorption at these two collieries desorbed gas compositions at South Bulli show a small enrichment in methane content. The opposite is observed at Dartbrook. Both collieries show enrichment in CO2 in the residual content. Adsorption studies show marked variation in adsorbed gas contents for methane and carbon dioxide at each colliery and between collieries. These variations are related to differences in coal pore structure, chemistry and Petrology.

QueenslandÆs new safety legislation for metalliferous and coal mining (Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, together with the Regulations) came into effect on 16 March 2001. The legislation places clear obligations on mine owners, operators and workers to have a safe place of work and to manage risks to safety and health. It also places obligations on contractors, designers and providers of services. The legislation is non-prescriptive in that it states what outcomes must be achieved and not what must be done. The key issue is that the risk of injury to people must be at an acceptable level. The legislation creates a Mines Inspectorate with powers of inspection and audit of mines, their safety management systems and the management of risks. Auditing of the risk management process is carried out against standard risk management techniques and directives for corrective action may be issued when audits reveal non-compliance or unacceptable levels of risk.

In North Vietnam, large ductile shear zones are observed along the Red river fault and the Dienbien fault. Left-lateral sense of the Red river shear zone is related to the direction of shortening E-W. NE dipping foliation planes is subvertical. Stretching lineation is subhorizontal ( 25¦). Left-lateral slip observed in the Oligocene Yansun granites demonstrates the major tectonic phase in Neogene, The stress field established from microfaults observed in triassic limestones, Oligocene granites and Neogene Conglomerates. Measurements of striations on fault mirors are used for calculating the stress tensor and for separating tectonic phases. Two tectonic phases in tertiary are separated : first tectonic phase related to the compressive direction E-W corresponds to the major tectonic phase represented by NW left-lateral shear zone. Second phase having the compressive direction N-S associated with the right-lateral movement of the Red-river fault zone opening of the Eastern sea and the Red-river and the Red-river delta is associated with the left-lateral movement along the Red-river.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and deployed three expert systems to give advice on mining health and safety. These are: dust control for continuous miners, dust control for longwall shearers, and methane control. All three systems query about the nature and extent of the problem. Typical questions asked deal with observed methane levels, ventilation type and quantity, cutting sequence, and what control technology is employed. Advice given does not focus on a single issue, but may suggest a variety of approaches consistent with the ability of the operator to implement the Suggestions.

The Pemali Open Pit Mine is situated in a small island called Bangka in Indonesia. It produces approximately 165,000 m3/year of tin ore with an average grade of 3.67 kg/m' of tin from a primary deposit. The deposit occurs at the rim of a granitoid intrusion within sedimentary beds. The rock formations, all extremely weathered, and the overlying alluvium, are exposed to a rainfall exceeding 3m/year. Serious slope stability problems are experienced at the mine, despite using overall pit slopes of 20¦-29¦, the latter resulting in a stripping ratio of 4:1. This paper outlines a computer based back analysis of a major slope failure involving some 250,000 m' of material which occurred on the west wall of the pit in February, 1984. The findings from the analysis, together with other information, are used to examine the stability of the east wall of the pit, where tension cracks developed later. The results indicate that the large influx of water was the most significant cause of such slope stability problems and a more intensified water management programme would be beneficial.

The Morning Star mine is owned by Hill 50 Gold NL. Gold is hosted in quartz-carbonate ¦stibnite ¦molybdenite veins that occur in a series of deformed, altered and metamorphosed mafic volcanics with subordinate sediments and felsic intrusive rocks. The irregular gold distribution and its relationship to structure and alteration intensity makes the definition of stoping limits difficult. Understanding the structural evolution of the orebodies and the contemporaneous and later structures that affect the orebodies has been very useful in this context. This paper reports on a detailed mapping exercise (as part of a more extensive and on-going investigation) and the integration of this mapping with other geological and grade control data in a 3D modelling environment to provide an expanded basis for stope design. Three types of mineralised zones can be discriminated based on the morphology of the veins within. They are:those associated with strongly folded, thick veins (approximately 1 m thick eg 05 orebody); those comprising planar, boudinaged and some folded veins which consolidate to form tabular, steeply dipping bodies (eg 010 orebody); and zones containing the above vein types and thin, highly deformed veins within zones of intensely foliated country rock that result in localised, irregularly distributed high-grade gold zones (eg 02 orebody). The mineralised zones associated with thick folded veins are typically predictable over many tens of vertical metres. The second and third types of ore zone is generally less predictable. Detailed mapping and structural kinematic studies indicate all ore zone types are affected by progressive deformation involving strong strain partitioning. It is interpreted that high strain zones, recognisable by intense foliation development and highly deformed veins, are the latest stage of a progressive deformation which approximates bulk flattening. Structural controls on mineralisation can be defined at two different scales.Regional scale folding has deformed a sequence of mafic volcanics with interlayered sediments and felsic intrusives. Initial geometry of felsic bodies relative to orientation of the primary lithological layering and the bulk shortening direction is interpreted to be critical for initiation and development of strongly dilatant zones within this package of rocks, and Local scale dilation is evidenced by development of several vein sets whose range in orientations and opposed vergence relationships suggest a pre-folding origin comprising both extensional and hybrid shear-extensional types. Continued deformation resulted in folding of these veins with strong strain partitioning. Major vein packages are closely spatially associated with the felsic/mafic contact and an interpreted early structure which appears to have partitioned early dilation. This structure is now obscured by strong deformation but is currently represented by a zone of planar veins.

SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.
