A number of mines in Australia have experienced premature detonations caused by bulk explosives reacting with the rock type being blasted. Premature detonations are extremely high risk events as they are unplanned, occurring at any place, at any time, potentially resulting in high loss (personnel and equipment). Many Australian mines have also experienced spontaneous combustion where spilt explosive reacts vigorously with the rock type. Premature detonation in these cases does not occur due to the lack of confinement and the volume of explosive present, but these reactions could impinge on the surface initiation system and provide an early warning of future premature detonations. The explosive ground reactivity phenomena is not restricted to Australia with similar incidents being reported in North and South America, South Africa, China and South East Asia. All reported incidents have two common denominators, being the presence of sulphide rock types and nitrate based explosives. Both premature detonation and spontaneous combustion result from the same series of reactions of partially weathered sulphides that ultimately result in the violent decomposition of the ammonium nitrate based explosive. A number of relatively easily observable indicators can be used to assess a particular minesiteÆs potential for explosive ground reactivity. The presence of two or more of these indicators means that minesite personnel should contact their explosives manufacturer for assistance in determining if a problem exists and if so then developing strategies to overcome the situation. The paper describes the indicators as well as discussing, via a case study, the holistic approach required to efficiently develop a relevant æSafe and Efficient Blasting ProcedureÆ to deal with explosive ground reactivity problems.

This paper provides a brief fundamental insight regarding the fabric media concept for liquor filtration. The subject matter will be of interest to metallurgists and engineers with professional responsibility for world class design of solid liquid separation processes and efficient lowest cost operation of existing mineral process plant. Avocet Mining commissioned the worldÆs first mineral liquor clarification process incorporating a fabric media liquor filter at their Lanut gold mine in Sulawesi, in 2004 with design consulting provided by the Australian company SLS Technology Pty Ltd. Development of the technology continues with applied research focused on selecting textile parameters to apply filtration to a wider range of particle and contaminant types, higher solids concentrations, and different process liquors. Liquor filtration with the Fabric Media technology offers an array of attractive benefits. For Avocet Mining, filtration of pregnant liquor directly from the heap leach pad has enabled removal of the sediment pond and sand filters from the traditional process flow sheet, thus providing significant cost and installation time savings. Avocet Mining has recently expressed confidence in the technology indicating selection preference of the technology for the expansion at Lanut and for a new project. The application design window for the Fabric Media concept is extremely flexible with the technology now successfully applied to many different liquor chemistries and application objectives around the world. Potential cost savings for solid liquid separation process plant, such as counter current decantation circuits, clarifier vessels and thickener tanks can be calculated from laboratory measurements or pilot plant demonstrations.

The primary object of this paper is to describe the present metallurgical practice of the Emperor Combined Mill, wherein ores from the adjoining and Associated Mining Companies, Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and Dolphin Mines, Ltd., are treated for the recovery of gold and silver.The mining field is located in the foothills, five miles from the sea, on the northern side of Viti Levu, the largest and most important island of the Fiji group.The orebodies occur in basalt and associated ash beds overlain by andesite, tuffs and sediments. The basalt is a dark greenish-black rock and in much of the ore mined is weathered with alteration of the olivine to serpentine and iron oxides, of the augite to chlorite and of the minute included crystals of iron ore to other iron oxides. Into the basalt intrudes a considerable number of andesite dykes, and the lodes occur as veins in these dykes, as "flatmakes" along fissures or, ash beds extending horizontally from the dykes and at the contact of the basalt and the andesite dices.The Emperor orebody is the largest and most important, and consists essentially of massive, shattered, well altered and mineralized basalt.Little or no free gold occurs in the ore at present being milled, the most important host minerals for gold being the tellurides sylvanite and hessite, next in importance being the sulphides, pyrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. Chalcopyrite is present in quantities large enough to be troublesome in the subsequent concentrate treatment section, while sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bornite, galena and native tellurium are present in small quantities.Unimportant occurrences of native copper have been observed in both Dolphin and Emperor orebodies.

Risk assessment in the mining industry is currently a topic of great interest with risk methodologies being increasingly applied beyond the traditional areas of finance and feasibility to analyses of risks due to various physical hazards including chemical, electrical, mechanical and geotechnical sources. The application of risk analysis and evaluation techniques to the management of personnel safety is being promoted by both industry and regulators but, particularly for geotechnical hazards, often there are inadequate databases for a meaningful quantitative calculation of risk. In Western Australia over the decade 1987 - 1997, the annual fatality rate for underground mining has averaged at approximately 1.3 in 1000 employees with rockfalls/rockbursts accounting for over half of these deaths (Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce, 1997). Recent improvements have been made since this time, perhaps halving the annual fatality rate, mainly due to industry improving ground control measures and implementing various recommendations from the Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce (1997). However there still remain a large number of unknowns when trying to address the complex area of geotechnical risk in mining. Risk calculations require information about the source of the hazard, the people or assets exposed to the hazard (the æelements at riskÆ) and the effects on these vulnerable elements if the hazard actually occurs (the potential consequences). To date, little information has been available on the exposure of mining personnel and equipment to underground hazards other than occupational safety studies on chemicals, heat, dust, etc. This paper concentrates on underground geotechnical risks and presents a data collection and rating system for the exposure of both the underground workforce and equipment to rockfalls and rockbursts. The methodology considers exposure times, personnel protection levels and hazard proximities to give exposure ratings for the major underground mining activities and hence rate different locations within a mine. This exposure methodology is then applied to the workforce and production/ development cycles in an actual WA underground mine, creating a snapshot map of differing levels of personnel exposure across the mine.

The end uses of magnesia are determined by both its chemical and its physical proper- ties. There is seen to be an increasing need for products of high chemical purity. Prod- ucts containing 90-95 per cent MgO can be routinely produced by physical beneficiation and calcination of most magnesite ores, the dominant source of magnesia. However, pro- duction of grades containing more than 98 per cent MgO with low impurity levels is not readily achieved physically. Such products can only be readily produced by chemical processing techniques. This presentation outlines the types of impurities present in magnesite deposits and the general concepts that are involved in chemically upgrading them. Of the potential leachants, only hydrochloric acid and aqueous carbon dioxide appear to be commercially attractive.

This paper describes the current and finished design work which has been performed for shallow rock station caverns for New York CityÆs first new subway construction in 60 years. A new robust, sophisticated, design procedure has been developed for two up to 30 m wide caverns, with overburden of less then 12 m, and rock cover to span ratios (C/S) in the order of 0.25. The design is based on empirical input parameters like the Q-value, rock mass rating (RMR) values, rock mass class after Cording (1984), cover to span ratios, which have been validated by the use of structural computer models as well as two- and three-dimensional numerical discontinuum models. The design approach is a staged approach using first principles, empirical models and non-linear FEM and DEM models. In addition, the paper describes the factors and circumstances why shallow caverns have been selected instead of cut-and-cover structures and why all the underground station structures have been developed as drained structures.

This paper describes a methodology for the design of mine pillars at the McArthur River Mine. The pillar strength is calculated using a method that accounts for confinement, pillar geometry and intact rock properties. The average pillar stress was calculated using in situ measurements of vertical stresses at shallow depth and the tributary area method in conjunction with numerical modelling. Observations of pillar behaviour indicate that an existing pillar stability graph may be slightly conservative and further adjustments for the local rockmass conditions are needed. The results to-date indicate that all mine pillars are stable for a range of mining geometries at McArthur River Mine.

Ore selection is generally a highly subjective task, with emphasis on producing product with a consistent target grade matching a perceived market requirement. A composite selection criterion ‘Comp’ (a linear function of the grade vector) can be used to maximise ore tonnage at a specified target grade (in Fe and contaminants) extractable from a block model. The blocks correspond to the selective mining units, with grades interpolated from diamond drill hole data. An iterative procedure has been developed to identify the coefficients and cut-off value for the composite function ‘Comp’, maximising potential ore tonnage at target grade.Commonly, target grade is predetermined by marketing; however, there is no guarantee that maximising ore tonnage at a specified target grade maximises the potential value of the mine. If the value of ore could be expressed as a linear function of the grade components, then these coefficients would be appropriate for the selection criterion ‘Comp’. The cut-off value for ‘Comp’ would correspond to the marginal cost of production; all blocks with a ‘Comp’ score above the cut-off would be classified as ore; and the cumulative grade of these ore blocks would be the average product grade over the life of the mine.Unfortunately, no such value function for iron ore is generally available. Methods for estimating the value function are discussed, using the spot price and sensitivities based either upon operational tolerances for Fe and the contaminants or upon published price differentials. This approach has been applied to an anonymous Pilbara deposit with about one million blocks averaging 1.1 kt. It is shown how the optimal target grade, cut-off grade and maximum tonnage can all be explored as a function of marginal cost and iron ore price. Alternatively, given marginal cost and an iron ore price, the effects of changing the tolerances (and therefore the relative costs of the contaminants) can also be explored.It is suggested this procedure can enable informed decision-making for an iron ore mine. Rather than setting final policy for the entire life-of-mine, the method enables target grades and tonnage estimates to be revised by re-computation as the mine life proceeds to recognise changes in market conditions and knowledge about the resource.It should be emphasised that this paper is concerned with ore selection rather than ore sequencing. Appropriate ore selection is a necessary but not sufficient condition for maximising value. Having identified the set of blocks that potentially maximise value, the sequence in which they are mined will present a trade-off between producing at constant grade and extracting high value ore early. The sequencing issue is not considered here. It is shown that optimum ore selection for an open pit mine is independent of any consideration of discount rates, although ore sequencing will depend upon the time value of money if the product grade is to vary across time.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. The Golden Blocks Goldfield is located in the Slaty Creek area,North West Nelson, about 20 km west of Collingwood. Alluvial gold was discovered in Slaty Creek in 1861. Gold was mined from quartz veins up to 1.5 m thick at nine mines from the 1890s until the closure of the Aorangi Mine in 1911. Total production from the Golden Blocks Goldfield is estimated at 46 000 ounces of gold. The Aorangi Mine was the largest mine, with a recorded production of 27 978 ounces of gold at an average grade of 36 g/t. Quartz veins containing gold and sparse sulphide mineralisation occur in a slightly metamorphosed, complexly deformed over-turned sequence of Lower Ordovician sandstones and shales. Primary gold mineralisation is associated with intensely deformed zones that occur near or at carbonaceous shale and sandstone contacts. Some eighty-five percent of all gold production (39 000 ounces) came from four mines confined to the stratigraphically lowest, most widespread shale unit. The quartz veins exhibit textures consistent with a hydraulic fracturing mode of vein formation with fissure infill vein types predominating over replacement textures. Stylolites of carbonaceous material and recrystallization features within the veins suggest multiple phases of deformation. The lack of wall rock alteration, and low primary fluid inclusion temperatures of 200¦ - 265¦ indicate that the ore fluids were associated with a low temperature epithermal system. A model consistent with similar mineralisation styles observed in Ordovician sediments from Pacific Rim occurrences is presented. The high grades (up to 100 g/t) mined from the upper levels of several mines suggests supergene enrichment processes associated with the Upper Cretaceous weathering surface. The Golden Blocks Goldfield has had no modern exploration. The most recent exploration was undertaken in the early 1980s. There are known acid intrusives in the area, with potential for the application of new models of intrusive-related gold mineralisation.

In the first half of this century a mining industry was developed in Indonesia under Dutch colonial rule. World War II and the subsequent struggle for independence resulted in the destruction of most of the infras- tructure and much of the data. After independence, restrictions on for- eign investment and internal turmoil prevented re-establishment of a viable mining industry until the formation of the present Government after 1965 and the enactment of sound laws in 1967 to encourage foreign investment. Rebirth of the mining industry was followed initially by slow growth, but in the 1980's, spurred by the worldwide interest in gold, Indonesia has become the focus of an intense exploration boom for gold and other precious metals. 103 Contracts of Work for gold have been awarded since 1985 with Australian companies being the most predominant. Since 1985 three new gold operations have been commissioned and another two are nearing completion. Several more are undergoing feasi- bility studies. There is reason to predict that Indonesian gold produc- tion will grow to place the country in the ranks of significant producers during the 1990's.

An important problem occurring in the iron and steel industry of Egypt is the presence of manganese oxide and chlorine with different percentages in the Bahariya Iron Ore Deposit, Western Desert, Egypt. In this work we used a geostatistical method known as the Volume- Variance Relationship to predict grade fluctua- tions of Fe% , Mn% and Cl% in the ore after blasting a certain volume from the ore deposit, on the other hand, if we have a certain limit for each of these chemical components, we can select the bench blasting dimension to give these limits.

The kinetics of reduction of PbO-silicate melts in CO-N gas mixtures at 900¦C have been studied. Rea~tion rates were measured by moni- toring the CO2 content of the product gas. A wide range of gas and melt compositions and gas flowrates have been investigated. The overall reaction rates in heterogen- eous systems are typically characterised by a steady increase as the gas flowrate is in- creased. At low flowrates the processes are limited by gas film mass transfer. At high flowrates it is expected that the rates will tend to maximum values determined by either the rate limiting chemical reaction or diffusion in the condensed phase. In the present series of experiments it has been found that for any given gas composition the overall reduction rate goes through a maximum with increasing gas flow. The maxima, which occur at relatively low gas flows, are more than an order of magni- tude greater than those observed at high gas flowrates. The results of these and other experiments are presented and analysed. Possible rate limiting mechanisms in the reaction system and their implications regarding commercial reactors are discussed.

Australia is well endowed with both tin and tungsten resources, and is currently a significant producer of both commodities for the international market. The intensity of exploration activity for both metals has been rather sporadic, reflecting the changing market situation. Thus tin has experienced three major boom periods around 1880, 1907 and 1983, while tungsten prices peaked around 1917, 1953, 1970 and 1977. During the earlier periods, the major discoveries were located utilising simple prospecting techniques involving creek travers- ing and stream sediment panning. The resulting location of tin alluvials quickly led to the discovery of adjacent primary deposits. The major tungsten deposits were composed of quartz- wolframite, which was readily visible as mineralised float both within the drainage systems and on scree slopes. Thus by the early 1900s most of the currently significant deposits had been located. More recent exploration approaches have combined these tradi- tional methods with the development of exploration models based on evolving genetic concepts. Within tin systems the emergence of province styles of clas- sification combined with enhanced perceptions of tonnage-grade characteristics and improved geological models has enabled more effective exploration strategies. Province classification at the inter- national scale demonstrated a clear relationship between deposit type and geological environment and thus considerable attention was given to the range of provinces present within Australia. Tonnage-grade diagrams enabled the refinement of economic per- spectives, while detailed models provided the basis for localised search parameters.

In 1953, Dr N Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of The Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H H Dunkin, Associate Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor); E A Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide; J D Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer, to consider the report on this subject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its frrst report to the Council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposals. A large number of replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report, in part as follows:From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the frrst report of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all of the following grounds:a. number of categoriesb. defmition of categoriesc. nomenclature.It is also apparent that all alternatives suggested in the various replies would likewise be unacceptable to the majority of those replying.As a result, we have come to the conclusion that neither this Committee nor any other could at present and in the present state of opinion on the subject make recommendations regarding classification and nomenclature of ore reserves which would be acceptable to a sufficiently large proportion of members.It seems to us now that the objective of a widely applicable and acceptable system of classification and nomenclature, one that could be endorsed by The Institute and ultimately become standard practice in the industry, requires more than compromise between present conflicting views... it requires first a foundation of substantial agreement on the essential facts, implications and range of ore reserve estimation. This does not yet exist and it is evident that much additional analysis of present practice and opinion must be undertaken before any further systhesis is attempted.

In the sixteenth century the Spanish Captain da Alvaro Soavedaro, on a search for the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, came across the main island of New Guinea which he named Isla del Oro (Island of Gold). Since that time exploration for, and mining of, gold has been pursued by many, culminating in . the development of major world-class projects in the latter part of the 20th century. Though various prospectors have panned for gold and small gold mining projects were undertaken through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was not until the 1880's when mining became a more concerted economic venture. Misima and Woodlark Islands in Milne Bay, Gura-Ackera and Yoada in Oro, and Lakekamu in Gulf Province and Keveri in Central Province were all gold producers by late nineteenth century. It was in the 1920's that corporations began mining in PNG and with the commencement of production at Panguna in Bougainville in 1972 a new era of mega-project mining began.' Today there are two large mining projects producing mainly gold and copper. The first, already mentioned, is Panguna on Bougainville Island. This project has provided Government with $US 475 million in taxes. ok Tedi is the second large mine development located in Western Province. It began production in 1984 with the extraction of the deposit's "gold Cap".

South Australian coals are all low in rank and generally poor in quality, with difficult combustion characteristics. This circumstance makes the selection of a fuel source for future power generation difficult, requiring careful study and detailed analysis of the various alternatives. Combustion characteristics can have a significant effect on plant design and costs, and need early attention in any exploration and evaluation programme. The physical location of the deposits, often remote from established infrastructure and centres of population, is also a major factor in the ultimate cost of power at the poirl use.

Basic principles of stack injection are outlined and supported by calculations of thermal, chemical and aerodynamic requirements of an ideal 4000 tpd furnace. Calculated results show that these requirements vary with conversion of FeO, and that best performance may be expected with XFeO = 1.0 for which calculated production is 6919 tpd and coke rate is only 211 kg/thm. Calculations are also presented for a cycled injection. Discussions show that stack injection is a good way of overcoming softening problems and meeting the demand for iron in a fluctuating demand situation when it exceeds the maximum capacity of a furnace.

Anglo Platinum is the worldÆs largest producer of platinum group metals, and also produces large quantities of nickel, copper and cobalt at its Refining complex in Rustenburg, South Africa. In 1995 Anglo Platinum embarked on a smelter modernisation project, primarily to reduce site emissions to below the guideline limit of 20 tonnes per day SO2, but also to increase the converting capacity in line with future projected production profiles. To achieve these requirements the existing Pierce Smith converters were replaced with a single large Ausmelt converter and a new acid plant. This was the first time that an Ausmelt furnace had been used for converting, but it had the advantages of being a very robust furnace and was fully enclosed, giving good gas capture. It was thus considered the most appropriate technology from both a process and an environmental perspective. It also enabled the smelting and converting furnaces to be decoupled. The plant was commissioned from late 2001 and the first tap was in June 2002. Despite being a new technology, ramp-up has been similar to other large scale pyrometallurgical operations. Numerous process improvements have been made since start-up, most notably a change from two-stage batch to fully continuous, resulting in the plant now operating above design in terms of throughput. Optimisation of freeboard accretion control was also a major component of the ramp-up activity. This paper discusses the commissioning and ramp-up issues of the new Ausmelt converting furnace, concentrating on the design and process changes, and summarises current operating performance against the original design objectives.

The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) was formed in 1994 to promote development and adoption of international standards for estimation and reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. The CRIRSCO standards have been accepted by most mining companies and professional societies worldwide. Market regulators from Australia, South Africa and Canada require that these standards be followed when releasing public information. Among these requirements is the use of specific definitions for what constitutes exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. If such information is publicly disclosed in must be estimated by a Competent or Qualified Person. In the United States of America, public disclosures are regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC does not recognise the CRIRSCO guidelines, and some of the SEC requirements for public release of information are materially different from those applicable in other countries. The CRIRSCO definitions and the Competent Person requirements are reviewed and compared with those of the SEC. The organisation of the SEC and its rule making process are briefly discussed. Ongoing efforts to bring the US regulatory requirements closer to those applicable in other countries are presented, as well as other activities that CRIRSCO is entertaining with the United Nations, the International Accounting Standard Board and other international organisations to reach the objective of worldwide standardisation of reporting procedures.
