Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (Pacrim) region.

In 2001, the Springvale Coal Mine determined a requirement for a 360 m deep vertical airway to ventilate ongoing underground longwall mining operations. The project, referred to as the Springvale No 3 Ventilation Shaft, was completed in 2003 - 2004 by blind boring a 4.25 m diameter hole from the surface to the coal seam at 360 m depth. The shaft was completed with a 3.5 m inside diameter lining made from a continuous watertight steel and concrete composite pipe. Presented from both the clientÆs and the contractorÆs perspective, the following paper describes the process of constructing a blind bored ventilation shaft for this application. Beginning with the clientÆs definition of the requirements and specifications for the shaft, the paper describes the steps followed by Springvale Coal prior to awarding the contract. Springv aleÆs process involved a thorough site investigation including procurement of geotechnical data for prospective contractors and the management of issues relating to safety, quality and the environment. The clientÆs view is followed by a description of the planning and works performed by their nominated shaft drilling contractor, Ardent Underground Pty Ltd.The contractorÆs description of the works includes the details of the blind shaft drilling and lining construction process used for this application. The design of the shaft lining installed at Springvale Coal was the first of its type to be used in Australia. The successful installation of a watertight composite shaft lining and the safety of the method, which did not require any personnel to enter the shaft or the mine, were among the positive outcomes from the project.

A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

Vitrinite of humic source (often designated as vitrinite A) is the maceral by which the rank of a coal ought to be determined. Therefore its recognition, and the precise identification of other vitrinites is essential. The majority of Australian petrologists are not differentiating between the vitrinite group macerals in maturation studies, the results of which have led to unexplained phenomena in coal characterisations and evaluation, such as 'reactive inertinites' and inaccurate predictions in petroleum source rock studies. The Callide coal has been chosen as a case study, with examples from other coals. The coal seams from the Callide Coal Measures show variation in the predominance of some macerals, indicating successions of environmental changes. The application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to the study of the Callide coal has enabled a better understanding of the nature and origin of some of the less understood macerals such as micrinite and vitrinite B. Two forms of vitrinite have been observed, each with a distinct reflectance range. The wood-sourced vitrinite A displays an average reflectance of 0.56 per cent, and a range of 05. - 0.7, implying a higher rank than the 0.49 per cent Ro total vitrinite reflectance recorded in previous publications. Vitrinite B is one of the most commonly-occurring macerals in the Callide coal. The lower-reflecting vitrinite B which forms bands, often several hundred microns in thickness, in TEM appears to be electron transparent lipid rich. Vitrinite B is interpreted to represent accumulations of leaves, and is believed to be a major source of hydrocarbons in Australian sedimentary basins. The Callide coal has entered the oil window, and oil has been generated from some exinite, cutinite, and resinite, as evident from the amber to light brown fluorescence of exinite and the presence of exsudatinite in cell cavities and cleats. However vitrinite B, the major potential source of oil, is seen under the microscope to be generating oil, thus placing this coal at the top of the oil window. Micrinite, the origin of which has been much debated, occurs as cell filling or infill of spaces between laminations in vitrinite B.

This paper details the approach adopted to develop an integrated asset management system for a GreenfieldÆs Metallurgical Plant during a recently completed feasibility study. The proposed asset management system deals with general aspects related to metallurgical operations and includes the following:plant operation and control, human resources, security systems, stores, and maintenance management. The paper deals with the establishment of requirements for the asset management system, the interfaces required, available systems in place and cost estimations for implementation. Every effort was made to integrate the system into existing corporate installations to create an integrated and effective management tool from both a plant operation and support perspective.

Advances in the development and application of in situ imaging of mineral processing operations using electrical tomography techniques are reviewed and illustrated with case studies relating to pneumatic conveying, mixing and centrifugal separation processes. The potential for applying these methods to full three-dimensional visualisation of the dynamic behaviour of flow in pipelines and separators, and the resulting consequences for process-modelling strategies, are discussed.

At depths greater than several kilometres in the crust, elevated temperature, confining pressure, and the presence of reactive pore fluids typically drives rapid destruction of permeability in fractured and porous rock. Ongoing deformation is required to regenerate permeability and facilitate the high fluid flux necessary to produce hydrothermal ore systems. A dominant influence on the evolution of fluid pathways in hydrothermal systems is provided by stress states, fluid pressures and reactions that drive permeability enhancement and compete with permeability destruction processes (Cox, Braun and Knackstedt, 2001). Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The techniques used will be demon- trated using examples from five deposits and pecial emphasis will be given to the accurate rediction of tonnages of ore and waste using he new "transfer function" technique of G.

The introduction of gravimetric sampling of respirable dust in the mining industry ne- cessitated the standardisation of techniques. The paper reviews the legislation con- trolling respirable dust monitoring for risk assessment purposes, it discusses the actions taken to introduce gravimetric sampling in collieries and it summarises the proposed guidelines. In conclusion, some of the results of dust surveys conducted in accordance with the proposed strategy are discussed.

Coal mining operations can impact on various types of surface infrastructure or natural features, including cliff-lines, steep slopes and natural watercourses. Longwall mining leads to a subsidence depression due to the changing geometry of the mined out area. The current regulatory process for managing subsidence in New South Wales (NSW) involves the preparation of a Subsidence Management Plan (SMP). This paper demonstrates the use of a Weights of Evidence (WofE) technique applied within a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment to predict potential areas for rockfalls along cliff-lines in the NSW Southern Coalfield. The WofE is a ædata-drivenÆ method that can be used to predict subsidence impacts prior to mining. The WofE method was applied to ten known rockfalls along the Cataract River to evaluate the reduced impact of not mining within 50 m of cliff-lines along the Nepean River. There is significant reduction of probabilities of rockfall occurrence when mining is avoided within 50 m of cliffs.

Commonly held ideas about effective training have long emphasised the importance of realism. Realistic training builds better experience among the trainees and a better perspective on the training material, making training more effective. While great strides have been made in this realm for mine safety and mine rescue training there are still areas that can be improved. One possible area is the expanded use of a mine fire simulation program where the migration of gases and smoke can be realistically displayed in an emergency, and outcomes varied as different conditions are being simulated. The use of mine fire simulation software potentially allows for the creation of more realistic scenarios in that smoke advance rates can be measured and recreated in evacuation scenarios, or that gas readings in mine rescue training can be dynamically and realistically changed to show the effect that time has on the fire scenario.CITATION:Slaughter, C and Tien, J C, 2015. The Accha-Yanque zinc belt in southernPeru is a major zinc-lead rich metallogenic province. In the belt are comprised several non-sulfide-type occurrences, extending on the periphery of the Yauri-Apurfmac batholith (Oligocene-Miocene). Zinc mineralisation at Accha (almost fully oxidised) occurs in breccias of sedimentary and tectonic origin in the limestone of the Ferrobamba Fm (Middle to Upper Cretaceous). Non-sulfide association consists mainly of smithsonite and hemimorphite replacing both primary ore minerals and carbonate host rocks. Mn(hydr)oxides and Zn-clays (sauconite), can be locally very abundant. Differences in mineralogy of the ore and gangue minerals, as well as the composition of the host rock can have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption, and therefore on the economic value of the deposit. This paper presents recent case study data collected by field portable x-ray fluorescence spectrum analysers (FPXRF) as part of grade control activities at three separate (nickel, copper and copper/gold) mining operations. FPXRF has been under utilised for grade control in recent years, largely because the success of early versions of FPXRF was limited to a few metals (eg tin). Efforts to utilise these early versions for other metals was largely unsuccessful and created a perception that FPXRF could not be utilised more broadly within the mining sector and specifically the area of grade control. The structural setting of the analytical function within mining operations has also contributed to the under utilisation of more recent FPXRF instrumentation. The concept of FPXRF as a grade control tool straddles the boundaries of the geology and laboratory departments. As such, this option is often not considered as part of an assessment of grade control procedures for new and existing mining operations. This paper assesses data collected by Australian and New Caledonian miners using FPXRF technology as part of the grade control function and concludes that FPXRF can provide operational and cost benefits to certain mining operations.

In six deep hard coal mines situated in the coal district of the Saar and Lorraine, Saarbergwerke AG produce annually 9 to 10 million tons of coal. The coal is either coked or fired in power plants. Comprehensive planning work is done for the producing coal faces, 15 stone drifts and 60 seam headings. The computer can assist in drawing up the short- and medium-term planning by taking over, on the one hand, work done so far by hand and by supplying, on the other, additional information. The computer can draw up time schedules, can do quantitative calculations, can draw up plans for the em- ployment of manpower, machines and other equipment, and can calculate cost and earnings. It is ensured that all part plans are always adjusted to each other. Because of the volume of work involved, planning in this form and extent becomes possible only by the computer. Especially with the periodical continuation of planning, the new system facilitates the work to be done. The ideas of the planning engineer are and remain the basis of all planning work and the computer gives him an aid to assist him with calculations, report writing and feasibility studies.

Within the project against pollution in the Gulf of Naples (Italy) it was envisaged to build a sewage collection tunnel whose tunnelling section is about 30 m2 and whose length is over 4 km. The formations to be bored through feature heteregeneous volcanic deposits made up of either lenses or lava, lapilli and pozzolan layers and ashstone silts. The cover ranges between 10 and 30 metres. The surface is heavily built-up requiring then an accurate monitoring and reduction of noise, vibrations and settlements. The building of the tunnel is therefore carried out by means of a boom tunnelling machine equipped with a mechanized shield. Support along the complete excavation perimeter is provided by linerplates together with an immediate cement grouting behind them. At a later stage the concrete lining will be cast in place.

Legislative change has reformed the licensing process in Victoria. The Mineral Resources Development Act 1990 and the two stage system of licensing with the authority to commence work is discussed. A key part is the requirements of planning consent, being either an Environmental Effects Statement or the issue of a Planning Permit prior to the issue of an authority to commence work for mineral extraction. Examples of recent experience is discussed.
