The weathering of different types of base metal deposits in the semi-arid environment of the Lachlan Fold Belt of western New South Wales affects the geochemistry of outcropping ironstones (gossans) and derived soils. W eathering of the pyrite- and pyrrhotite-rich mineralisation at the Elura Zn-Pb-Ag deposit leads to highly acidic conditions and strong depletion of Cd and Zn throughout the profile. There are local attainments of high concentrations of Ag, As, Ba, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb and Sn in the profile and As, Ba, Pb and Sb are still highly anomalous in surficial material (ironstone and soil). However, at Parkers Hill, in the Mineral Hill Field, the primary Zn-Pb mineralisation is pyrite-poor and so weathering is not as acidic as at Elura. Thus, although Ag, As, Cd, Cu, Sb and Zn may be concentrated at various levels in the Parkers Hill weathering profile, Cu and Zn (as well as As, Pb and Sb) are retained in surficial ironstones in essentially the same abundances as in primary mineralisation. Thus, variations in the suite of geochemical indicators present in ironstones and residual soils are likely to reflect differences in the original mineralogy and the degree of acidity produced during the weathering of base metal mineralisation. Hence, an understanding of weathering processes is necessary to fully interpret exploration geochemical data.

Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials.This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products.This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia.These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50 per cent of new generating plant might be nuclear.Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme.The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.

The paper explains the genesis of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education to its unique position in mining engineering education. A description follows of the development of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management which commenced in 1979 in the cooperative mode of four groups of three weeks full- time study followed by twenty-three weeks in industry. In particular an analysis will be given of the state of origin of students, ages and employing industries. Given the experience from the evolution of this course a similar process is described for the Graduate Diploma in Mining which has been accredited to commence early in 1987.

The AuPlus" Systems have been applied in the gold mining industry to achieve improved gold recoveries, faster leach kinetics and reduced cyanide consumptions. Calcium or hydrogen peroxide, collectively known as peroxygens, can be used. The choice depending on plant design and the nature of the ore. Laboratory test work and plant trials are included in this paper to illustrate the benefits of peroxygen usage in extractive gold metal- lurgy.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) derived from sulphide oxidation and the associated metal leaching is the most significant environmental issue facing the mining industry today. Under given hydrological and biogeochemical conditions, the local geology and mineralogy largely control the formation of ARD. The involvement of a geologist is therefore essential in minesite ARD assessment and prevention. The relevant tasks that a mine geologist may undertake at three major phases of a mining project are briefly described. Additional knowledge that a mine geologist should acquire in order to achieve proficiency in ARD assessment is also suggested.

The carbon-in-pulp (CIp)process has become well accepted and firmly established in the gold industry of South Africa and, at this stage, six large CIP plants are treating close to I million metric tons of material per month. Many small operators are also using CIP and additional large plants are either nearing completion, are on the drawing boards,. or are being considered. The programme of testwork that preceded the acceptance of the CIP process in South Africa was conducted over some eight years and has been previously described'-7. With the start-up of the President Brand CIP plant on 'calcine' in July 1980 and that of the Western Areas CIP plant on repulped filter residues in September 1980, the emphasis on the CIP process switched from pilot plants to these large plants - and has largely remained there. As it has started up, each new CIP plant benefited from the experience gained and the developments made, on earlier plants but, since so few plants have so far been established in South Africa, each new plant and each new design has revealed a further set of conditions to be met and problems to be overcome. However, in the highly collaborative atmosphere of the South African gold-mining industry, the results and observations from the operation of these first plants were shared by all mining groups. This paper will attempt to describe typical developments on, and results obtained from, these new large plants, and will incorporate significant results from the earlier laboratory and pilot-plant investigations.,

Samples weighing 0·5 g are fused with sodium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 5 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is boiled with concentrated nitric acid and then 2 ml. of a phosphotungstate solution are added. After dilution to 10 ml. with water, the solution is heated in a boiling water-bath for not less than 10 min. When cold, the solution is extracted with 2 ml. of iso-amyl alcohol and the yellow phosphotungstovanadate complex is compared with a standard series. Concentrations down to 4 p.p.m. may be analysed at a rate of 100 samples per man-day of 8 hr.

Copper-gold ores have been technically difficult and uneconomical to process due to high consumptions of cyanide. Many copper oxide and sulphide minerals react with cyanide to form copper cyanide complexes, partly contributing to the high level of weak-acid dissociable cyanide in the tailings which is normally experienced during the processing of copper-gold ores. The cost for detoxification, if required for treating these tailings, would further inhibit the development of these copper-gold resources unless the cyanide used for leaching was recovered. Several technologies have been proposed to process copper-gold ores, aiming to recover copper as a co-product and cyanide for recycling in conjunction with the leaching process. A critical review of these processes reveals that a pre-concentration stage (solvent extraction or resin ion exchange) is required. Cyanide is recovered by the conventional Acidification-Volatilisation-Regeneration technique in most cases. A critical evaluation is also provided on technical aspects related to the use of Vitrokele Technology and a newly developed Elutech process in processing copper-gold ores, in particular with its application at May Day Mine.

The current methods for predicting pillar strengths are reviewed. A two-dimensional model, based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is proposed for determining the compressive strength across the width of a long pillar. The model can be used to determine pillar strength and the depth of the crushed (ie yielding) zone from the pillar edges. The values of the parameters in the model, namely the cohesion and internal friction angle of the coal seam, friction angles at the contact of the coal seam with the roof and floor are determined by matching the strengths predicted by this model with the Bieniawski pillar strength formula for pillar width to height ratios up to 5. It is found that the derived values of these parameters are quite close to the results from laboratory tests. Based on the model, a preliminary analysis of pillar stability is made.

Potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock contained in dumps formed as a result of open cut mining of metalliferous orebodies are conventionally sealed or covered using a near-saturated, low permeability compacted clay layer, protected with a mulch layer and/or vegetated growth medium. The purpose of the compacted clay layer is to limit oxygen diffusion and the infiltration of rainfall into the dump. Where the aerial extent of the PAF waste rock dump is large, or where suitable clayey material is in short supply, it may be difficult to source sufficient suitable clayey material to form the cover. The paper describes a laboratory-based investigation of combining inert waste rock and tailings to form an alternative seal or cover material. The inert waste rock was sourced from the trafficked surface of a non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock dump, with a maximum particle size of about 100 mm. This was combined with NAF thickener underflow tailings slurry in various mass ratios, and the resulting mixtures tested for their particle size distribution, compaction characteristics, soil water characteristics (relationship between suction and volumetric moisture content), and saturated hydraulic conductivity. The mixtures tested ranged in consistency from those dry enough to be compactable, to those with the consistency of wet concrete that lend themselves to placement without the need for compaction. The laboratory test results showed that the suitability of the mixtures as seal or cover materials is very dependent on the particle size distribution of the mixture, with well-graded mixtures having substantial fines performing best.

Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. Vein formation in response to deformation observed at Penjom reflects regional structural deformation within the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia and specifically along the Bentong-Raub Suture zone.CITATION:Endut, Z, Ng, T F, Abdul Aziz, J H and Teh, G H, 2015. Structural mapping of pit walls can be performed using digital images and photogrammetry software, but the performance is limited by weather and environmental conditions including dust, rain and light. On the other hand, active sensors such as terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and total stations (TS) suffer from vertical orientation bias and occlusions when persistent discontinuities dip at the same angle as the scanner line-ofsight. The recent development of the compact light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems has made it possible to mount these sensors on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones which offer the potential to overcome limitations that are inherent in existing mapping systems. This study details the research involving integration and application of an advanced UAV-LiDAR system for structural mapping of a highwall. A state-of-the art laser scanner with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and real-time kinematic global positioning system (GPS) was integrated on to a UAV. The system was first tested in a laboratory condition. Then the UAV-LiDAR system was employed to map a highwall of a coal mine. The planned flight trajectories tested the system at variable distances from the highwall face and at various speeds. The raw data collected from individual sensors were fused, filtered to remove noise, and segmented to produce a surface scan model. Finally, the point density and surface coverage were measured using the surface scan model of the highwall. The parameters were compared with equivalent measurements computed from a reference TLS data. The study demonstrates the capabilities of a UAV-LiDAR system to generate accurate and occlusion free data for mapping highwall geological structure with very quick and efficient flights in the field. The accuracy of an ore reserve is only as good as the geologist's understanding of the deposit. The methods that are applied to resource and reserve estimation reflect that understanding. At the Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold deposit in South Australia, evolution in the understanding of the controls on mineralisation coupled with the changing demands of the project have led to changes in the approach to reserve estimation. The project has moved into a phase where detailed stope mining reserves are now required as distinct from global ore reserves. The complex nature of the mineralisation and the large amount of data demand that all available information be readily accessible in a flexible format. To enable the selective manipulation of geological and assay information and its characterisation, a relational database has been developed. For reserve calculations themselves, initial computations were based on a system derived from that used for the Kambalda nickel orebodies. The Olympic Dam system differed mainly in the use of statistical analyses in the estimation of grade instead of the previous polygonal area of influence weighting method, Three dimensional weighting techniques are now being used for local reserve estimates. Flexible facilities for raw data handling combined with grade estimation techniques which are commensurate with the mine geologist's understanding, produce detailed gridded and contoured ore zone models suitable for reserve calculations and stope designs.

Sampling and sample preparation systems at the Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited port of Dampier, W.A., were developed for two separate objectives. 1. The need for rapid determination of physical properties. On stream size analysis enables lump ore and pellet- ized ore physical properties to be monitored and controlled whilst shiploading is in progress. As a control procedure this facility allows optimum shiploading rates con sistent with physical quality control. 2. The need for accurate chemical analysis. Chemical analysis on ship- loading forms the final link in overall quality control procedures encompassing the operation of mining, railway and port blending. Thus maintenance of specification products with minimum variation in chemical characteristics is ensured.

As the modification of the 2009 Mill OperatorsÆ Conference theme from æmilling through the boomÆ to æthe boom û experience gained and lessons learnedÆ exemplifies, comminution practitioners are facing a series of challenges in the dramatically changing mining environment. One of the main problems plant managers have been facing during the boom times has been the severe metallurgy skills shortage and high staff turnover, both factors that can cause difficulties in mill liner management. Many of todayÆs mill managers are now also more than ever faced with the need for cost-cutting in order to continue operating viably. Amongst other potential target outcomes such as maximised throughput, MillMapperÖ, a tool for mill condition monitoring and mill performance optimisation, can be utilised to address these issues. This paper demonstrates how MillMapperÆs quantifying decision making tools can serve to be in control of managing mill liner and production issues, and how it can form the basis for mill cost savings without the risks normally associated with conventional methods or the lack of using any condition monitoring methods. MillMapperÖ is currently being referred to at a rate of approximately 150 surveys and associated reports per annum at processing plants in Australasia, South America and Africa. Examples throughout the paper provide insight into how the presented sample set of users have extracted benefits that could have otherwise not been safely or at all achieved.

The importance of using disc cutters for rock excavation is reflected by their wide application in hard rock cutting machines such as tunnel boring machines and raise borers. The forces involved in the cutting process are those due mainly to thrust and rolling forces and are greater than that required by cutting picks. An interesting feature of cutting with discs is the formation of surface crushing, surface and sub-surface chipping and primary crack formation. Experimental, as well as analytical, work has been carried out to determine the optimum spacing between the disc cutters to control primary crack orientation. Wedge bit indenters were used to simulate disc cutters. The paper concludes by proposing a new approach to rock excavation by hybrid cutting based on controlling the primary crack Orientation.

The accurate determination of trace level gold in ores, metallurgical samples and process solutions is required because of the value of gold, the efficiency of the cyanide leach process and because of the high gold recovery from these cyanide solutions. It is thus necessary to routinely analyse geological and metallurgical samples with gold concentrations of 3 g tonne (ug g- 1ppm) and process solutions with a gold concentration of 0.01 mgL 1 (ppm) preferably with sufficient accuracy to quote at least two significant figures. Several techniques have been reviewed for their suitability for the routine gold analysis of these samples which also contain signif- icant concentrations of other ions. The classic fire assay technique has achieved the respect and confidence of mining personnel because of the results achieved by very experienced assayers. Other extraction and concentration techniques have now been shown to be equally effective. The use of instrumental analytical techniques particularly atomic absorption spectrometry have shown that cheaper procedures, which are as reliable, are now available to gold producers for the routine analysis required to maintain an efficient gold recovery process.

"Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. Zinc-bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as electric arc furnace dusts, Waelz oxides, galvanising ashes, brass foundry and converter fumes are marginally attractive, both technically and economically, for processing by the Imperial Smelting Process or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolytic plant. The EZINEX« Process allows the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form from these materials, together with regeneration of the leach liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarises the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroammino complex, permits the recovery of other valuable metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver. These are recovered as a metallic cement, consequently improving the economics of the process.
