Recent well-publicised problems with the start-up of new mining projects have continued to feed the perception that the mining business in general and Ore Reserves in particular are a poor risk. New mines commonly experience difficulties when the true variability of ore characteristics becomes apparent during commissioning. At this critical stage, the impact of lower metal recovery, reduced throughput or increased consumption of reagents and energy can have a catastrophic effect on economic returns, as illustrated by the premature closure of some operations. There appear to be several common reasons contributing to the poor performance of mining projects, of which three are examined here: lack of early risk assessment before feasibility studies are started, inadequate sampling for metallurgical test work and variability of the run-of-mine (ROM) ore. An underlying feature of these issues is the lack of effective interaction between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists/ process engineers. Geologists need to be more aware of ore processing issues and the range of characteristics that need to be considered as part of the resource estimate. Metallurgists need a greater understanding of the variability of the run of mine ore in terms of all the characteristics that influence the design and operation of the plant. Mining engineers need to determine the short-term variability of the ore in the mine schedule, so that there is confidence that the quality of the run-of-mine ore will be within the design specifications of the plant. A substantial overlap between these disciplines and sharing of areas of responsibility is necessary if these and other technical problems are to be better understood, production estimates are to be improved and commercial risks are to be reduced. Although the JORC Code (1999) provides guidelines for reporting all the issues that are material to an Ore Reserve estimate, some issues are rarely fully addressed in Ore Reserve reports. In particular there is no formal requirement for a metallurgist to assure his or herself of the appropriateness of the Ore Reserve classification. Consequently the level of uncertainty related to recovered grade and ore processing characteristics may be understated. It is suggested that to meet the concerns of bodies funding new mineral developments a stronger multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of mineral deposits and reporting of Ore Reserves is required. The culmination of this approach would be the formal requirement for a geologist, mining engineer and a metallurgist to co-sign Ore Reserve reports.

Mining companies and operations across the globe typically target best practice financial management, along with a focus on economically driven mine plans. Not only is this inherent in running a successful mining business, but also critical in addressing investor scrutiny. The standards for social and environmental practices is less consistent than this, with most companies adopting standards that are driven through legislative and compliance requirements of the nations in which they operate. Although there is still room for improvement, Australian is a country that stands at the forefront of social and environmental legislation, driving more sustainable planning practices for mining operations, with an ever-increasing focus on mine closure considerations. Of the many nations yet to reach such a legislative position, Kazakhstan is a place where some companies are driving towards world class standards beyond what is government mandated. In mineral processing, the management of tailings may become increasingly more challenging with a change of ore type and the quality of water used in the plant. This, in turn, may affect the overall costs of the operation and water usage and, in the long-term, pose challenges for mine closure and rehabilitation. Depending on the applied treatment technique, the short and long-term properties of tailings are largely determined by the fine particles. Most clay materials and ultrafine particles exist in tailings from oil sands, coalmines and base metals, bringing about challenges in dewatering performance. Moreover, given the growing concern for water scarcity, the minerals industry is increasingly turning towards the use of saline water, which poses yet another challenge for tailings management. The high salt content alters the behaviour of clay particles, making dewatering a more complex process than in freshwater systems (Boshrouyeh Ghandashtani et al, 2022; Costine et al, 2018). High-density techniques for tailings management have been used for several years in the mineral industry. In this regard, one of the novel and promising dewatering methods is in-pipe or inline flocculation, where the polymer is added at high dosages to thickener underflows, giving additional (likely denser) aggregation, releasing more water on deposition compared to low solids thickening. Previous research in the field of flocculation has primarily focused on the process of flocculation itself, specifically the settling rate and size of aggregates, rather than the long-term impacts of the produced tailings materials (Liu et al, 2020; Jeldres et al, 2017). This is particularly true for the novel method of this technology, where polymer is added to the thickener underflow. Furthermore, these studies have used small-scale set-ups using buckets/beakers, plungers and mechanical stirrers for the flocculation process. Unfortunately, these methods lack the necessary control over the properties of the treated tailings, which can lead to irreproducible mixing and dispersion of viscous polymer solutions (Fawell, Costine and Grabsch, 2015). Consequently, a system that can work with a wide range of operational conditions for high-solid tailings material is essential for reliable and reproducible results. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of different type of polymers in the presence of monovalent and divalent salts on the inline flocculation of artificial tailings. The next step was to evaluate the impact of high-dosage polymer addition on geotechnical properties such as settling rate, consolidated density, rate of consolidation and the hydraulic conductivity of tailings. In addition, this research aimed to fill a knowledge gap and investigate the feasibility of using polymer-treated tailing in removing the copper ions and then quantify the performance of produced aggregates under time-dependent processes.

Throughout industry in Australia, time lost through work accidents and illness is three times greater than strikes. In 1978 in New South Wales alone, 400 workers died, 125,000 were injured, 6,000 were indust- rially deafened, and 3,800 people died of occupational cancer. It has been estimated that less than 10% of workers injured make claims for common law damages. The figure is probably in fact much lower than that. However, common law damages claims are starting to become a boom industry and employers are only now starting to see the effect of the increase in Claims. I predict that within 5 years the number of common law damages claims made will increase dramatically.

Nelsen, Porter and Wilson (1996) provided some preliminary concepts for the design of the Melbourne City Link tunnels. At that time, the City Link project was in the early design phase whereas now it is nearing completion. This paper provides details of the actual design adopted for the various sections of the tunnels as well as some commentary on the design process. The tunnels form a critical element of the project and the design of both driven and cut and cover tunnel sections is a significant factor contributing to successful project execution. Geology, hydrogeology, site constraints, traffic management and program were important design inputs. Design for the cut and cover sections in particular varied significantly in response to these differing inputs.

Pumped co-disposal of coal processing waste was promoted in the 1990-2000s as a low-cost highperformance alternative to tailings dams. In particular it would avoid high up-front capital for rejects trucks and dam embankments, and would produce a combined waste deposit with better geotechnical properties than either coarse rejects or tailings. Overall, the promise was not delivered; in particular, upon discharge the waste segregated by size, and operators responded by moving the coarser waste to contain the finer waste. In consequence, not only did design analysis lag behind construction, but some of the initial expectations persisted with the result that analyses did not fully represent what was occurring on the ground. After more than twenty years inspecting, designing and tending Co-Disposal Areas (CDAs), it is apparent that they are essentially upstream constructed tailings dams with some more favourable aspects but also a few unique quirks. Although waste management technology has moved on somewhat, the high cost of changing CHPP waste circuits means that most mines with pumped codisposal will continue to discharge mixed waste slurry into CDAs. It is therefore worthwhile to share some lessons in the hope of promoting sounder design, operation and rehabilitation. These include: • Discharged waste does not form a homogeneous wholly competent deposit but instead comprises materials ranging from sandy gravel to silty clay with the distribution determined by movement of the discharge and decant structures; • CDAs circulate and contain a lot of water; • As a result of the first two points, some areas of the CDA comprise saturated fine waste that is no different from tailings and, like tailings, often behaves in an undrained manner; • Seepage is inevitable and desirable because strength improves as water is removed. However, stability is strongly impacted by pore pressures and in design these need to be rationally rather than optimistically considered; • As CDAs are built to about 40m or higher, strength-deformation characteristics of the foundation become more important; • Even if geomechanically stable, CDAs will need covers to prevent salts and acids from reaching the surface; and • Erosional stability of the cover material(s) will probably dictate maximum slopes for rehabilitation.

The seminar had its origins in an Inquiry into the Box Flat Disaster and one of the conclusions from this Inquiry was that there should be a better dissemination of technical knowledge and the results of research work. As a result of this Mr. W. Roach, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in Queensland and Mr. R. Menzies, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in N.S.W. had a meeting to see how this could be done. They concluded that it would be difficult to have the sort of regular meetings that would be possible where distance was not significant, but a seminar would be a major step toward satisfying this particular conclusion of this Inquiry. As a consequence, Mr. Roach, who is on the Committee of the Southern Queensland Branch of the Institute, suggested when the Branch programme was being planned this year that a meeting of this type should be held, and the Mine Fires Seminar which was held today is the result. We have received a great deal of support in arranging the Seminar. First and foremost I wish to acknowledge support from the National Coal Board in United Kingdom. Not only have they released Dr. Willett for a period of six to seven weeks to visit Australia, conduct the Seminar and give a series of lectures in various areas through the country, they have also borne the brunt of the financial support that has been necessary to make this possible. The process of excavating and mining coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata. The fractures provide pathways for gas released from coal seams and other gas-bearing strata to flow into the mine workings. Coal seam gas typically contains high concentrations of methane with lesser concentrations of carbon dioxide. Low concentrations of other gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide and ethane may also be present in some coal seams. In certain geological settings, particularly in close proximity to geological structures, such as faults and dykes, the concentration of gases contained in a coal seam can vary significantly between methane-rich to carbon dioxide-rich.In mine design and planning it is vital that mining engineers gather sufficient information to accurately determine the content and composition of the gas present in the coal seam and develop an understanding of changes in these parameters within the planned mining area.The longwall method of mining coal causes fracturing of the overlying and underlying strata behind the retreating longwall face. Where coal seams and other gas-bearing strata are present within the caving zone, gas will be released from the strata leading to contamination of the mine workings. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the mine ventilation, the concentration of gas in the mine may exceed the statutory limit, resulting in production delays and potentially unsafe conditions.CITATION:Black, D J, 2016. The Australian mining industry, a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, is on a journey towards greater equity and inclusion. Th paper introduces a comprehensive exploration of how universal design principles, stemming from architectural roots, have evolved through automation and digital technology into the more encompassing frameworks of inclusive design and equitable design. The paper proposes a practical framework for those involved in work, facilities and equipment design in the mining industry to identify and assess for equity and inclusion. Universal Design emerged in the 1960s with a primary focus on architecture, aiming to create spaces accessible to people of all abilities. Its foundational principles sought to ensure equitable use, flexibility, simplicity, perceptibility, tolerance for error, low physical effort and optimal spatial considerations. Over time, these principles evolved and expanded beyond physical spaces, finding applications in various fields, including technology, education and transportation. In response to advancements in technology and a growing understanding of the multifaceted nature of diversity, Universal Design evolved into Inclusive Design. Inclusive Design goes further than mere accessibility, considering a broader spectrum of users with varying cognitive, sensory, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. It emphasises user centred design, customisation options, diverse user research and continuous iteration. Equitable Design emerged as a framework that addresses not only the diversity of needs but also systemic disparities. It emphasises fairness, justice and the elimination of structural inequities. Equitable Design encompasses accessibility and affordability, representation and diversity, ethical considerations and community engagement. This paper will explore the applications of these design principles through a series of case studies including village and on-site facilities, remote operations and office based work design and technology design. By applying these frameworks in a mining context, the paper proposes that mining companies and suppliers can improve diversity, equity and inclusion leading to safer, more engaged and productive workplaces.

Comalco's Bell Bay smelter produces some 94 000 t.p.a. of primary aluminium in the form of foundry alloys, extrusion billet and rolling blocks. The extrusion billet and rolling block are produced by a process, in which molten aluminium is poured into an open ended water cooled mould of the required shape. The bottom of the mould is initially closed off by a dummy or starting block. Primary cooling takes place at the mould wall and secondary cooling is achieved by direct water sprays onto the out side shell of the product. Careful preparation of the molten alumin- ium is essential if stringent alloy specific- ation limits are to be met. Gallium (Ga)-containing compounds such as Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) are widely used in electronic devices due to their superior electro-optical properties and their usages increase rapidly. For the sustainable supply of Ga to electronic industry, therefore, the recycling of Gallium becomes essential. Pyrometallurgical Ga recycling process involves the complex chemical reactions between slag, matte, liquid metal, gas, refractories, etc. Therefore, the accurate thermodynamic information and phase diagram data for the oxide system containing Ga2O3 is important. In the present study, new phase diagram experiments for binary SiO2-Ga2O3 and ternary CaO-SiO2-Ga2O3 system are carried out using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and quenching experiments followed by Electron Probe Micro-Analyser (EPMA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) phase analysis. Based on new phase diagram data and available literature data, the thermodynamic modelling of the entire CaO-SiO2-Ga2O3 system is performed for the first time.

JUDGING from the attitude of past and present Parliaments in Australia, it is a' reasonable assumption that encouragement of the principal industries has been adopted as a main principle in the government of the country, but while in most cases bonuses, subsidies, and other means have been proved successful and become recognized as established methods in the case of mining, which is undoubtedly one of the most important industries, the question is complicated by difference of conditions and variable quantities, and it can scarcely be said that any system has been proved generally successful. Indeed, it would not be a very extravagant statement to assert that problems connected with affording direct monetary assistance in aid of mining development, and at the same time devising a system adaptable to the varying conditions to be met, are, in every State of the Oommonwealth, matters continually exercising the minds of those concerned in providing and ailocating such assistance ie Parliament on the one hand, and the Department of Mines on the other.True, there are methods in vogue of granting State assistance to the mining industry which have undoubtedly been successful, but it is in most cases questionable whether the beneficial results following successful expenditure in one direction have compensated.

Development face destress blasting is a construction technique in deep mining, which aims to prevent, reduce the frequency, or manipulate the timing of violent, stress-driven rock mass instability at the face. This paper presents a destress blasting design concept that was optimised for the specific rock mass conditions of a deep mine using the Hybrid Stress Blasting Model (HSBM) software. The design was then implemented in an area of the mine where stress-driven instability of the face regularly occurred during development. An adjacent tunnel was constructed in parallel without destressing, within the same rock mass conditions, as a control. The rock mass response to each excavation was quantitatively compared using high-resolution local seismic monitoring. Visual observations of the fractures created by destress blasting were also made. The analysis indicated that destressing reduced both seismicity and the rock mass stiffness ahead of the face. This was inferred from the spatial broadening of the development seismogenic zone and the typically significant reduction in the spatial density of seismic events. Seismic source mechanism analysis also indicated that destress blasting generated a much wider variety of failure modes than conventional blasting. Most seismic source mechanisms following destressing were associated with natural joint structures. A relatively small portion were consistent with newly created blast-induced fractures. The greater diversity of rock mass failure modes associated with destressing implied a lower potential for stain-energy accumulation within the rock mass at the face, and thus a lower risk of hazardous instability. Observations of visible rock fracturing indicated that the major principal stress influenced the damage intensity on natural geological structures within the destressed zone, and that numerical predictions of radial fracturing limits made by HSBM analysis were realistic representations of the real blasting performance.

Acid generating sulfidic tailings covering a surface area of approximately ten hectares have been deposited in the historic mining area of Lavrion in Greece. For the development of a remediation strategy, the performance of three alternative acid generation control techniques was assessed under actual field conditions. The techniques involved the application of dry covers, including a synthetic HDPE liner and a compacted clay layer with capillary barriers. Furthermore, the potential formation of a low permeability hardpan layer at the sulfidic tailings surface by limestone addition was investigated. The field tests covered an area of 2500 m2, which was divided in equal quadrants, corresponding to the control plot and the three alternative remedial options. To monitor the amount and quality of percolated water, lysimeters were installed beneath the four plot areas. Based on the monitoring results over a period of six years, due to the dry climate encountered in the Lavrion area, a low amount of water percolates through the pyrites if no action is taken (control area), corresponding to 20 - 25 mm per year. This water is highly acidic, pH = 1.2, and contains a heavy load of contaminants, eg Fe 40 g/L, Zn 15 g/L, and As 1.5 g/L. The HDPE cover eliminated the percolation of water into the material for a period of five years, whereas thereafter the volume of leachates increased to values similar to those recorded in the control plot. The water collected in the lysimeter of the clay cover has been minimal corresponding to approximately five per cent of the drainage volume produced in the control area. In the fourth plot, which involved limestone addition to sulfidic tailings, the volume of drainage initially collected was almost double compared to the control area. After three years of monitoring, significant reduction in the amount of percolated water was observed, attributed to the formation of a cemented layer (hardpan), at a depth of 40-80 cm from the testpad surface.

The phase equilibria in the Al2O3–TiOx system were investigated in wide ranges of temperature and oxygen partial pressure: 1300~1600°C and 10-16.6~10-8 atm, respectively. The equilibrium phases and their compositions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), respectively. Most noticeably, a wide range of pseudobrookite solid solution was found in equilibrium with almost pure alumina. At each temperature, the cationic ratio expressed as RTi = nTi/(nAl + nTi)) of the pseudobrookite solid solution showed a noteworthy dependency on the oxygen partial pressure. This resulted in the formation of a broad range of pseudobrookite solid solutions, ranging from Al2TiO5 (RTi = 1/3) to Ti3O5 (RTi = 1.0). Complete miscibility within the pseudobrookite solid solution was observed at 1600°C, with only a minor miscibility gap becoming evident below 1500°C. Based on the results obtained in the present study, the behaviours of Al2TiO5 pseudobrookite have implications in two key domains: (1) understanding changes in the physical properties of the materials, and (2) elucidating the evolution of Al–Ti complex oxide inclusions in liquid steel which can deteriorate the steel cleanliness.

The Sirosmelt top submerged lancing system has many applications in the smelting of base metal and complex materials. It has particular advantages for smaller scale smelting and the treatment of recycle materials in smelters where its low capital and operating costs and its operational flexibility are of immediate benefit. The system can be fueled by oil, gas or coal, as well as by mixtures of fuels. For many applications, the use of coal as a fuel has operating cost advantages over oil and gas, but conventional pulverised coal feeding systems entail very large capital expenditure and this militates against the use of coal. The methods available for improving on conventional technology for coal firing of Sirosmelt systems are discussed and operating experience with alternative systems are outlined. The use of coal as a reductant in the Sirosmelt system is also discussed.
