In recent times, with the global mining industry’s focus on sustainable development there has been a significant focus on mine closure and rehabilitation performance and reporting through the development of the International Council on Mining Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative and the Equator Principles. In addition, financial reporting obligations under International Financial Reporting Standards and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) have also led to better understanding and improvements with industry closure performance, liability management and reporting.Under these sustainable development principles and financial reporting obligations, mining companies are required to consider mine closure planning and associated cost estimates across all life cycle phases of the mine. Internal processes have been developed within mining companies to better understand their closure liabilities and obligations and likely costs and cost estimating processes are generally developed for long-term life-of-mine (asset) planning and budgeting, financial reporting for corporate balance sheet provisioning purposes, and regulator reporting for environmental bonding and financial assurances.These days mining companies need to plan for, prepare and actually mine for closure right from the start of a project. This means that their closure and rehabilitation liabilities throughout each stage of the mine life cycle phases must be understood, planned for, managed and controlled.So how is the industry performing? Understanding of closure liabilities is improving and reflected in liability cost estimations that are recognising the likely issues to be faced at closure, but there is a way to go to ensure that the industry doesn’t add to the increasing legacy liabilities being passed onto the wider community.CITATION:Slight, M and Lacy, H, 2016. The mechanism of clay slime flocculation in coal washing circuits is considered and it is concluded that polymer flocculants are most suitable. It was found that the addition of sea water with a polymer flocculant improved flocculation and settling, and it was also found that dilution of a flocculated pulp increased floc size and hence settling rate.In predicting plant consumption of reagent it was found that cylinder tests, or even pilot plant tests, could give erroneous results, particularly on flocculated pulps. Different flocculants may, however, be compared in cylinder tests.For filtration, flocculation with Separan plus sea water was much more beneficial than flocculation with Separan alone.INTRODUCTIONDuring the mining of coal, and its subsequent beneficiation by washing, large quantities of minus 10 mesh material are produced. This fine material, which consists of broken down shales and fine coal, causes difficulties in water clarification circuits, in refuse disposal, and in filtration of fine coal.These difficulties can be largely overcome by flocculation, and this paper discusses the mechanism of flocculation, the methods by which a selection of flocculant may be made from the large number available, and the limitation of the prediction of plant performance from laboratory tests. This work applies particularly to the washeries of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) and Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. (A.I. & S.) .

SmartTag is a radio frequency identification (RFID) based technology designed to allow tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles and finally into the concentrator. This paper presents current developments and the future direction of the SmartTagÖ ore tracking system, as well as presenting some case studies. Successful applications of the SmartTag system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This presented Metso with a number of technological challenges, including RFID tag and antenna design. By reducing the traditional RFID tag diameter from 60 mm to 20 mm the RFID tags can now successfully pass through a secondary crusher. The new smaller RFID tags (referred to as mini RFID tags) have been used in some Process Integration and Optimisation projects with very promising results. The results indicate that the miniature RFID tags have a higher survivability to blasting and through secondary crushing stages. Extending ore tracking further through the process allows more reliable linking of spatial data with time based process performance. Metso is looking at developing even smaller micro RFID tags, and is also investigating other applications for the SmartTag system, including ore tracking from the original source to the final destination (ie from the mine, through the plant and ports to the customer).

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.

The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

The Iron Magnet deposit has been mined since 2007 when Arrium (then OneSteel) commissioned the magnetite concentrator to supply feed to the pelletising plant in Whyalla. The concentrate quality requirement for the customer required consistent product with minimal variability. In the early stages of operation, it was identified that the feed variability introduced significant changes in the concentrate quality, which was outside the acceptable customer limits.In 2011, a geometallurgical regression model was developed that allowed for the estimation of concentrate quality produced from the feed material. This was based on a laboratory-scale Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) test performed on the feed material. The objective of the project was to characterise the raw ore in the pit to allow for blending prior to crushing. By blending the feed to the concentrator, minimal concentrate quality variation within the plant was achieved. The orebody was divided into geometallurgical classes, called ore types, based on the mineral texture and magnetic mass recovery. Each geometallurgical class consisted of material with similar metallurgical performances. For each individual blast pattern, the ore was grouped into the geometallurgical classes and a composite sample was created. The composite sample was put through the laboratory-scale DTR test and the results were used to estimate the metallurgical performance of the material.The characterisation process and feed pile build methodology was applied in early 2013 and went through an optimisation and streamlining phase. Since the implementation of the geometallurgical characterisation process, the plant has seen a significant reduction in concentrate variability and measurable throughput gains. Open pit/underground mining and mineral processing can generate large amounts of waste that contains sulfide-type minerals such as pyrite (FeS2), and it can produce acid mine drainage (AMD) when exposed to oxygen and water. This highly acidic wastewater contains heavy metals and this is one of the most serious environmental issues after mining operations taking several decades to completely remediate with high costs. For green mining, the present study focused on the development of a recovery technique for gold from an eco-friendly solvent, thiosulfate, by utilising mine wastes, tailings. First, gold recovery experiments in ammonium thiosulfate system were carried out using model samples representatively present in tailings (ie SiO2, Al2O3, FeS2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4). The results showed that gold recoveries were negligible when using Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4 while pyrite shows a recovery efficiency three-fold as high as the maximum recovery efficiency when using others. Subsequently, the study also addressed the identification of the recovery mechanisms and post-recover process. The results indicate that tailings can be sufficiently utilised for gold recovery in the hydrometallurgy process and a further sustainable process can be established.

Stuck drill rods (often referred to as bogged rods) in production ‘upholes’ are a common problem in the underground mining industry. Bogged and broken off drill rods have the potential to fall out of the hole without warning, posing a serious hazard to personnel and equipment below.Current industry practice to alleviate this hazard can be to either grout the hole in order to lock the drill rods in place, or to ‘plate over’ the hole with a rock bolt. Each of these operations seriously delays mine production as both require demobilisation of the production drill and mobilisation of alternative personnel and equipment to address the hazard. Both methods have been assessed for safety and efficiency and were found to be expensive, time consuming and in the case of plating over, ineffective.To address the safety and efficiency short-comings of the traditional practices, the long hole plug (LHP) has been developed to safely secure the lost rods in the hole. The LHP when struck by falling drill rods behaves similar to an expansion shell anchor transferring the axial forces from the falling drill rods horizontally into the rock mass. It is installed using standard production drills allowing work to safely continue with little interruption.Extensive testing has been carried out on the LHP in the laboratory and underground at the Rosebery mine on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Testing has included static pull testing, full scale drop testing and underground trials.The outcome of this work has proven the LHPs ability to add safety, volume and cost benefits to the Rosebery underground operation and it is currently in use at that site. In this paper, we introduce the term ‘LJC’ to refer to the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator, which is an advanced technology developed by Longi Magnet, integrating various techniques such as hydro separation, magnetic flocculation, and magnetic columns. This technology combines gravity, hydro separation, and magnetic separation to achieve efficient and reliable separation processes. With its low maintenance requirements and high reliability, the LJC technology has proven to be effective in magnetite processing. The LJC technology offers two primary benefits when compared to traditional magnetic drum separators. Firstly, it can enhance the quality of the targeted or improved concentrate at a coarser product size by minimising the carryover of gangue minerals into the concentrate. Secondly, it can significantly improve the concentrate quality (eg achieving >67 per cent Fe) while maintaining similar liberation size and mass yield. In China, this technology has been widely adopted in magnetite processing, replacing traditional magnetic drum separators and fines flotation in the final stage of the process. Through collaboration with a magnetite producer in Western Australia, Longi Magnet successfully implemented the next-generation LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator to replace the original stage 3 magnetic drum separators. The application of the LJC technology resulted in an increase in product P80 from 32 μm to 43.1 μm, while maintaining a final concentrate grade of 65 per cent Fe. Additionally, the power consumption, measured in kWh per tonne of concentrate, was reduced by 10 per cent. By eliminating the bottleneck caused by the requirement of a coarser liberation size to achieve the desired concentrate grade, the plant’s throughput was increased by significantly. The LJC technology has demonstrated its ability to reduce the carbon footprint, improve concentrate grade and enhance mass recovery, offering an alternative solution for magnetite processing. The high-grade magnetite produced by the LJC technology is particularly suitable as a raw material for Directed Reduction Iron and green steel production. This paper introduces the principles of the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator and provides details of its application in a magnetite operation in Western Australia.

Recycled cement paste (RCP) is a kind of CaO-rich recourse, which is separated and recycled from waste concrete. Due to its chemical composition, RCP could partially replace lime as a flux and be loaded into electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process. Rapid RCP assimilation and liquid slag formation have significant effects on EAF steelmaking process. In this study, the dissolution behaviours of RCP and lime at temperatures of 1400°C to 1500°C were investigated using static dissolution experiment. The dissolution rate, interfacial microstructure, as well as dissolution mechanisms were discussed. It was found that the dissolution rate of RCP was much higher than that of lime. RCP could be completely dissolved into slag in 60 secs at 1500°C. The dissolution rate of lime was in range of 3.910-4 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 2.610-3 g/(cm2ꞏs), while that for RCP was in range of 1.510-3 g/(cm2ꞏs) to 4.910-3 g/(cm2ꞏs). As for lime dissolution, a dense layer of dicalcium silicate (C2S) generated at the dissolution interface, and the diffusion of Ca2+ in C2S layer was the limited step for lime dissolution. Some of calcium ferrite could be observed at the interface between lime and C2S layer. As for the RCP dissolution, there is no obvious product layer of C2S formed at the dissolution interface, Fe2+ continuously diffused into RCP layer during the dissolution, and small amount of FeOꞏMgO solid solution generated and gathered at the dissolution interface. The dissolution rate of RCP in EAF slag was quite higher than that of lime, partially add RCP as flux in EAF could accelerate the slag formation process.

Implementation of a well planned and executed Management Operating System (MOS) can result in widespread improvements to operational performance but its success relies heavily on the investment by and engagement of the larger workforce with the project. Over the seven month period of the Telfer MOS project, significant improvements were achieved; a 20% increase in monthly hoisted tonnes from the open stope and sublevel cave operations and a 45% increase in square metres of ore extracted from the narrow vein operation. The Telfer MOS was undertaken with the intention that the project wasn’t solely about producing new tools, it hinged on the investment and behaviours of the personnel affected by these tools and alterations. To ensure that the project ran smoothly, the Byrnecut senior leadership team and their operators were heavily involved in the project’s development. In the initial stage, Telfer’s MOS project determined that the quality and accuracy of the information received in the form of radio calls to mine control and completed operator plods was questionable. This required an overhaul of the data collection and verification process in the form of altered operator plods, which was then cross referenced with the operator’s radio calls to mine control. Once the data collection and verification process was implemented, the Telfer team was then able to produce several tools with the aim of providing visibility to the data being captured and its implications. These tools allowed the mine foremen to determine whether equipment was being under-utilised and where they should focus their production efforts to meet monthly targets. Whilst the initial underground project is now complete, the implementation of MOS across the entire site is ongoing with significant operating improvements occurring.

Over the last decade the adoption of autonomous technology has proven its potential to fundamentally alter the mining industry, offering significant improvements in safety and productivity. Automation levels are now increasing exponentially across all parts of the supply chain from drilling, haulage, processing, rail and shipping to the maintenance of the above. However, the management of human error risk is also becoming increasingly complex as the disconnect between the people who operate and interact with mining equipment and those that design the autonomous systems grows in terms of skill and expertise. Furthermore, as comfort levels with automation increases amongst operators, complacency is increasing as the initial functional safety benefits have been realised. This paper introduces an innovative concept that unites two distinct fields, functional safety and behavioural economics, to address the complex issue of human error risk in autonomous mining operations. Functional safety, a well-established field in engineering involves identifying potential hazards, assessing risks and designing systems in a way that minimises the chances of accidents and limits their consequences. Meanwhile, behavioural economics takes a data centric approach to analysing the psychological aspects of human decision-making, acknowledging and seeking to understand the errors that can originate from cognitive biases and heuristics. This paper seeks to bridge these domains by emphasising that human error in autonomous mining is not solely a technical issue but is deeply influenced by human behaviour and decision-making processes. By incorporating insights from behavioural economics, we can better predict, prevent and manage human errors in the mining sector. By applying principles from both disciplines to a recent incident example we will explore how cognitive biases can impact peoples’ interactions with autonomous mining equipment. This interdisciplinary approach will not only enhance the design and implementation of functional safety measures in mining but also lead to the development of people centric solutions that consider the inherent fallibility of people. We will explore how human centred design can help bridge the gap between these two domains and apply systems thinking for a universal approach. Through an indepth case study analysis and empirical data, our research aims to provide actionable insights and practical recommendations for mining industry professionals, regulators and stakeholders involved in the safe integration of autonomous systems.

A pressurisation method with multiparallel fans has been adopted at HongLiuLin Coalmine to control the significant external air leakage through the goaf area of coalface 15207. Potential damaging effects of large external air leakage on a coalmine’s ventilation system are analysed according to the current air leakage status caused by the exploitation of shallow-covered coal seams. The use of pressure balanced ventilation to prevent external air leakage through goaf areas is introduced. The calculation of ventilation network of HongLiuLin Coalmine shows that the air resistance of an external air leakage branch through a goaf area and the air pressure drops from the intake slope to the working face can be adopted to determine the values of pressure to be increased by regulating fans and airflow controlling parameters of regulators. By investigating airflow requirements of the pressure-balanced area as well as the performances of the auxiliary fans currently used in the coalmine, the number of pressurisation fans needed is fixed. "In today’s mining industry, the pressure of reducing costs and increasing production while maintaining high safety standards is at the forefront of operational endeavours. A combination of specific mining knowledge and technological advances has helped enable this notion. Fleet management systems have been developed to enable sites to better measure and manage production to improve operational efficiency.The integral part to managing production is having accurate, readily accessible data. This empowers key stakeholders in the management team to drive production reporting, materials tracking and budget forecasting.If a site does not run a fleet management system, manual input is heavily relied upon for production data, which introduces increased risk of human input error. Errors can drive outcomes that don’t achieve increased production at a reduced cost. Alternatively, a fleet management system can have improved accuracy but involves a high monetary investment. Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

Alaska Native corporations, as representatives of the aboriginal inhabitants of Alaska, control the mineral rights to 18 million hectares of Alaska, approximately 12% of the state. These corporations were established through legislation passed by the United States Congress in 1971 designed to settle the land claims of the Native peoples of Alaska. Twelve corporations, each representative of a specific geographic and cultural region, were established and granted the mineral rights to most Native lands in their respective regions. Since that time the Native corporations have taken an active role in mineral development in the state. Generally through agreements with established mining companies, Native corporations encourage balanced exploration and development of their lands. Substantial mineral potential has been recognized on Native corporation land, which includes holdings in many historic mining districts of Alaska. Several world class deposits have been discovered on Native corporation land, including the Red Dog zinc-lead deposit, which began production in late 1989. The experience of Alaska Native corporations demonstrates that aboriginal peoples can be very positive forces in resource development.Alaska, although remotely located in the Northeast corner of the Pacific Basin, is playing an increasing role as a supplier of natural resources to the region and the world. Most of Alaska's privately held natural resources are owned by the aboriginal inhabitants of the state. These aboriginal inhabitants, now collectively referred to as Alaska Natives, have emerged in the last two decades as having a major international impact in mineral resource exploration, development, and production.

At times of high metal prices, mining projects that have previously been put into the ætoo hard basketÆ are now being more closely examined. Typically these projects include the potential recovery of small mineable tonnes with high contained metal values and often with poor ground conditions. For many underground mining projects, the drift and fill method is viewed as a high-cost method and a æmethod of last resortÆ. As a result the method is not well known in Australia and it is the authorsÆ view that the method is under utilised. The drift and fill method can be applied to a variety of underground mining situations and is a preferred method for some orebody geometries and where ore recovery is viewed as a key to project success. This paper examines some of the critical mine planning and backfill issues involved with the drift and fill mining method.

Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine has a history of underperformance with delivery of ore from the underground operation to the surface for processing with no real clarity in sources of loss and value. In order to increase underground production performance, the basic concepts of the Theory of Constraints model were applied to the Argyle underground production system. This prompted a revised view on bottlenecks and contributors to value loss and ultimately leading to record breaking mine performance. System loss reporting to demonstrate the best opportunity to drive value, departmental detail to develop tools to identify improvement opportunities and clarity across the team to ensure alignment and clear lines of communication were critical to the project success.

"From paving the way in gaining approval for the first metalliferous in-pit tailings storage facility (TSF) in Victoria, to developing a deposition methodology to optimise the storage capacity and provide a final rehabilitated surface which replicates the premining topography, in-pit tailings storage has proven not only to be a cost-effective means for tailings management at Fosterville Gold Mine, but also one which provides significant economic, social and environmental benefits. Coupled with ongoing raising of the existing above ground TSF and commissioning of a new above ground TSF, Fosterville Gold Mine have to date effectively used three open pits for in-pit tailings storage, with one of the pits currently progressing through the capping and vegetation establishment phases of closure.This paper presents the process adopted by Fosterville Gold Mine in their flotation tailings management, from design and operational phases through to rehabilitation implementation.
