In underground mines experiencing dynamic events, there is an ever-present challenge to design and maintain a capable ground support system. One key component of ground support systems is surface support, which serves the essential roles of retaining failed rock and transferring forces generated by surface displacement to rock bolts or other support elements. Observations underground show that in many instances, standard mesh panels alone do not provide sufficient dynamic support to retain substantial bulking failures imposing displacement onto mesh, and in such cases Mesh straps and W-straps may be employed. Determining the performance of surface support elements proves to be difficult, with a multitude of variables at play in the underground environment. Quite comprehensive work has been completed on laboratory testing of surface support systems; however, very little work has been conducted on in situ dynamic testing of Mesh straps and W-straps. In 2019 in Western Area’s Flying Fox Mine, in situ dynamic testing was conducted on a series of Mesh straps and W-straps using Sandvik’s in situ Dynamic Test Rig (DTR). The testing regime applied impact energies from 5.1 to 15.3 kJ to Mesh straps and W-straps. The performance of the straps that did not fail was a maximum absorbed energy of 9.3 kJ and 14.2 kJ for the Mesh straps and W-straps respectively. The testing successfully demonstrated the ability of Sandvik’s DTR to test not only rock bolts, but also surface support elements, creating new testing and research possibilities. The testing also provided important design guidance data that is not practicable to obtain using laboratory dynamic testing facilities.

Project delivery in our current market is not as efficient as it could be. Industry at large (both client and consultant), is diligently following the engineer, procure, construct, manage (EPCM) or engineer, procure, construct (EPC) delivery models and not necessarily appreciating the underlying principles that make them the effective tools they were to start with. We often misinterpret project management with EPCM and end up with a literal and superficial interpretation instead of the disciplined risk reduction and business value capture exercise it is intended to be. One of these underlying principles is the project team as resource or commodity depending on which perspective we follow. Some of us understand this principle only too well and succumb to the temptation to take advantage of the imbalance in the understanding of EPCM by selling bodies and hours. Value and return on investment do not always come into the equation. The latecomers and aspirants are struggling with this as a barrier of entry into this lucrative market, since as we all know - people as commodity was becoming and still is a scarce resource. Clients are also waking up and asking why 1000 engineers on the floor are better than 100, when engineering design in all aspects of industry, new technology aside, is mature. Why is it that we start with a clean sheet of paper with every project or that neighbours in the same industry segment and location just happen to have completely unique conditions and circumstances that require totally original design (Local conditions aside)? The answers to this question appear when we explore the role of the project team and how it is structured. We will need to investigate team culture and levers for success. Then we will formulate a business case for a team to be able to follow traditional project management practices with EPCM delivery models but yet end up with an alternative look, feel and result. An outcome where more input is not necessarily better and the client and consultant both are aligned with success measured in dollars and a win-win outcome for both parties.

Because the environmental problems are occurred by greenhouse gases such as CO2, the industries have tried to increase electric motor efficiency to reduce CO2 emissions. A core material of electric motor is high-silicon electrical steel. The ferrosilicon (FeSi) alloy, a raw material for the production of electrical steel, affects the electric properties of silicon steel. The main impurities such as Ca, Al and Ti make inclusions or precipitates that causes core loss. The slag treatment has been widely used to remove impurity elements. Thermodynamic principles for the refining of several impurities, specifically Ca and Al, have been investigated, whereas thermodynamic behaviour of Ti has not been fully understood yet. Therefore, in the present study, the titanium distribution ratio () between ferrosilicon and CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slag system at 1773 K was investigated. The results show that is influenced by both the basicity and stability of titanium ion in the slag. Specifically, exhibits a minimum value at about C/S=0.7 indicating a shift in the titanate structure unit from [TiO5]-square pyramid to [TiO4]-tetrahedron because of lack of Ca2+ ions in a C/S<0.8 region, contributing to an increase in titanate capacity and .

Metals Refining Operations Pty. Ltd. (NMO), PNG&apos;s only gold and silver refinery is operated by Golden West Refining Corporation Ltd (GWR), a member of the Rothschilds group and has a strong PNG ownership link through statutory shareholders. Located in Waigani, MRO has been successful in substantially increasing production through toll refining for Porgera, Misima, Tolukuma, Wapolu and, more recently, at Lihir as well as treatment of alluvial gold from smaller operations. This increased throughput has resulted in the need to constantly upgrade equipment, techniques and practices, particularly to continue quality improvements and meet market demands. The evolution of these changes are documented and discussed and the probable future development plans are detailed.

The resurgence of silicosis and coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP) in mining and the recent ban of engineered stone products underscore the need to comprehensively address mineral dust exposures and the associated health hazards. Worker exposure to particulate matter, remains a pressing concern demanding nuanced exploration as all dusts are not created equal. The established link between silica and respiratory diseases necessitates a more detailed understanding of the characterisation of particulates and their health impacts. While current monitoring relies on total mass, it is increasingly evident that the size, shape, mineralogy and agglomeration of particles play a crucial role in determining health impacts. This has been evident in the engineered stone industry with workers not only facing a greater risk of silicosis, but also seeing a faster progression of the disease and a higher likelihood of dying from it. Simultaneously, the surging demand for critical minerals, integral to low-carbon economies, has seen government and industry fast tracking the exploration, mining and processing of these commodities. Critical minerals, crucial in technologies like lithium-ion batteries and high-performance alloys, are central to achieving global environmental goals. Significant funding is currently being allocated to advance the development and processing of these materials, however there remains a considerable gap in understanding potential health risks, urging comprehensive health risk assessments. To tackle these challenges, the University of Queensland has developed innovative dust characterisation methodologies, including the use of the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), a scanning electron microscope, to characterise respirable and inhalable dust samples. This advanced technique, initially applied in coal and metals mining, is expanding to critical minerals mining, unravelling diverse mineralogical components and particle size distributions. This conference presentation will showcase the latest research, emphasising the use of advanced analytical techniques to deepen our understanding of the size, shape and mineralogical composition of particulate matter. By synergising insights from coalmines, metals mines, smelters, engineered stone and critical minerals assessments, we aim to proactively manage health risks, contributing to safer workplaces and responsible production practices in the mining sector.

At Tropicana gold mine (TGM), mine planning is completed from ‘one source of truth’ known as the Integrated Planning Model (IPM). The IPM is a block model which forms a core component of the TGM Mine Planning System – used for short, medium and long-term mine planning cycles, and for Mine to Mill reconciliation.The IPM was developed from a desire to consolidate long-term information contained in mineral resource and ore reserve models, with short-term information from the grade control processes, including grade control models and ore polygons.The IPM is informed initially by resource models, upon which the longer term budget and schedules are based. The IPM is routinely updated with grade control models and ore design information, providing increased confidence for short to medium term mine planning. In this format, the IPM also provides a framework for reconciliation of resource performance with grade control, mining actuals and mining schedules, and ultimately milling. As well as a means for analysing past performance through reconciliation, it has proven its worth as a predictor of variation and an input to successful schedule sequencing and change management. The IPM is a critical component of the TGM Mine Planning System, providing a centralised framework for short interval mill feed prediction through to life-of-mine (LOM) planning.Current development of the IPM is working towards incorporating Mine to Mill optimisation and real-time material tracking projects at TGM. If successful, the model will provide a truly powerful mine planning data source. Current development outlines a mechanism for tracking material from Mine to Mill, and for transferring mill performance data back to the IPM. Increasingly advanced material classification and mine planning, incorporating the multiple geometallurgical variables, will enable the mine to provide consistent mill feed products and result in a steady state and optimised mill.This paper outlines the vision, creation and benefits of the IPM at TGM. An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. Mobile mining equipment presents only a small portion (ten per cent mining project costs but the selected technology will determine to a large extent the mining performance and mine profitability. The actual performance of the selected mobile equipment technology will rely on the support functions, infrastructure, user interface and user acceptance. Optimising the technology to match the circumstances is an increasingly important phase in a mine feasibility study. Smartly done feasibility studies include the possible future needs of changing or building-up of the selected technology. In massive mining applications the machinery faces quite different challenges than in selective or small-scale mining applications. In massive mining applications the efficient and continuous move of large amounts of material has led to the use of increasing degree of automation. This higher degree of automation in a mining application, on the other hand, will be best applied to a smooth and streamlined mining process and operation. Mining methods like block caving support automated operation. Automated mobile equipment needs supportive infrastructure, monitoring and information transfer systems as well as well established working procedures. Too often the user interface and human factor is disregarded during the consideration of automation. Through the available supplier programming tools it is possible to see how much the selected technology provides flexibility in changing production or economical situations, when major rebuilds or replacements are necessary, and view the effects of all these on the mine economy. When adequate technology is available from various sources, the difference becomes from preparing for the future, managing costs and combining the best layout with the most suitable technological solutions.

In recent years there has been a major change among mining companies in their mining methods. This has been driven by the need to increase shareholder value and optimising the value from an operation. With this understanding there has been a need for all producers to become more efficient in their mining processes. An analysis of the coal losses at Mount Thorley Operations indicated that the major losses were in the dragline section of the mine due to coal damage from throw blasting. This damage was evident after the removal of the overburden by the dragline.Coal and Allied Mount Thorley Mine in partnership with Orica Explosives developed a process to reduce the coal loss associated with the throw blasting of Mt Thorley. Orica provided its specialised knowledge and experience in the drilling and blasting area and combined this with the local mining knowledge and expertise of Mount Thorley Operations personnel to conduct the project. This partnership reduced coal loss in excess of 50 per cent whilst maintaining targeted dragline productivity.

The benefits of fine size separation in magnetite concentration are detailed focusing on published research from various iron ore producers. Basic principles of fine sizing and advancements in screening technology are addressed. A chronological review of research is used to show the evolution of fine sizing applications in the industry, starting with studies that demonstrated the benefit of using fine screens to produce consistent lower silica concentrates, followed by improvements in fine sizing equipment that have made effi cient screen classification in ball mill circuits practical. Case studies are used to demonstrate how positive sizing with screens can be used to significantly shift concentrate ‘grind/grade’ relationships.

Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several seismically active mines as part of its Kalgoorlie Operations. In order to successfully continue mining at depth in increasing stress conditions, strategies need to be developed to reduce, control and manage the impact of seismicity causing damage to the rock mass. Consequently, a research partnership was developed with the WA School of Mines (WASM) through Mining3. The main aim of the project was to develop appropriate ground support standards that could withstand the expected dynamic response with minimal to no rehabilitation required for the life of that excavation. The project utilised a design methodology for determining the required energy demand based on detailed geotechnical mapping, probabilistic analysis of wedge formation and an estimate of rock ejection velocity based on uniaxial compressive strength of the intact rock (Villaescusa et al. 2016). The ground support scheme consists of high tensile chain link mesh, resin encapsulated de-coupled posimix bolts and plain strand cable bolts, in one, or multiple passes together with plain shotcrete. Implementation of the design posed several challenges including how to install the chain link mesh, maintaining the required productivity, ensuring quality control, and understanding the interaction of the several ground support components within the scheme. The implementation of the system within a trial area was successful from development mining to open stope extraction. The most significant field verification of the system occurred with near field M+1.9 seismic occurring in proximity to an operating long-hole drill. Despite large displacements exceeding 0.5m in places, there was no significant ejection of rock or failure of the ground support system. Following the successful trial, the ground support design methodology and standards have been implemented across several NSR sites. The system forms the basis for the successful extraction of resources in future high seismic risk areas.

Australia&apos;s gold mining industry has seen a resurgence in the past seven years - a resurgence the likes of which has been seen in very few, if any of this nation&apos;s other mineral industries. Industry experts are predicting that Australia could become one of the world&apos;s largest gold producers as the future of the South African gold industry looks increasingly tenuous under the present political crisis in that country. Therefore, it is utterly ludicrous for the Federal Government to introduce a tax which will see the Australian gold industry "wither on the vine."The Queensland State Government is utterly opposed to a tax on gold. Anyone in their right mind, who has seen the statistics could only agree with our stance. In 1984/85, activity in the gold mining industry is estimated to have accounted for over $750 million in national income, over$1,200 million in national output, and tax revenue of at least $115 million as well as providing more than 16,000 jobs. Chartered accountants Coopers and Lybrand&apos;s survey on the gold industry last year showed an increase in exploration expenditure by gold producers and explorers by up to 36% in 1986 from 1985 levels. That level is expected to be maintained in real terms for most of the remainder of the decade under the present tax arrangements. This is in contrast with the mining sector as a whole, where a recent Australian Mining Industry Council survey forecasted a 14% FALL in production.

Since the earliest recorded prospecting of the 1860&apos;s mineral exploration and mining in Fiordland has been discouraged by the formidable physical difficulties presented by its isolation, extremely rugged relief, treacherous coastal waters and generally unfavourable weather conditions. Government assistance was often sought by the miners and prospectors but little, if any, support or encouragement was received after the initial period. During the 1840&apos;s decorative marble was quarried at Caswell and Dusky Sounds. A prospector discovered and attempted to mine copper sulphides to the north of Dusky Sound (Parks Mineral Beds) and near Mt Solitary. A small Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au bearing quartz reef was discovered and driven on in the granite coast line of Preservation Inlet (Bradshaws Reef) and the ore roasted on site. Alluvial and quartz lode gold was discovered at Preservation Inlet in the 1890&apos;s and led to the recorded recovery of 11 000 oz of mainly lode gold. Falloff in grades with depth, thinning and splitting of the reefs and the high mining costs at this location led to a virtual abandonment of the field by 1906. In the late 1950&apos;s and early 1960&apos;s the geology of Fiordland was mapped by the Geological Survey at 1:250&nbsp;000 scale, but field work was largely confined to the shore lines of the coast and fiords. In view of the physical difficulties it is not surprising that mineral exploration and mining up to 1970 was limited to the scant attention outlined above.

The Australian mining industry can expect to be working internationally competitive high quality coal mines during the twenty-first century. Cost efficient mining methods such as high productivity longwall units with heavy reliance on remote control will be standard and worked by well paid and intensively trained operators. Major changes in mine ventilation engineering can be expected in the use of computers and mine telemetry, the understanding of the mine environment and the frequency of mine disasters, the utilization of mine air contaminants for profitable purposes and the provision of a pleasant and comfortable work environment. New approaches to mine ventilation such as air recirculation will have been considered. There will be an increased need for highly trained ventilation engineers. With the present pace of technological change, quite revolutionary new approaches to mining and ventilation can be expected by the end of the twenty-first century.

The purpose of any consultancy is to provide a superior service for their client. Organisational structure is a key element in providing this service and differentiating between consultants.In an organic organisation the emphasis is on effectiveness, problem solving, responsiveness, flexibility, adaptability, creativity and innovation. Such an organisation is able to respond in a timely manner to change because employees are empowered to be creative, to experiment and to suggest new ideas. The process of innovation is triggered by employees throughout the organisation in a collaborative manner.Problem solving becomes a core competence of the consultancy. A multidisciplined approach arrives at superior solutions that are rigorous, holistic, achievable and often novel. It allows the mining consultancy to extract the most from a very talented and experienced team.This paper highlights the advantages of an organic structure for a mining consultancy and how to implement such a structure. The paper describes data from test work programs on a range of magnetite ores in Australia and overseas. The analysis looks at the behaviour of material of different sizes fed to the rolls and the change in product size as a result of that, the conclusion being that there is a logarithmic relationship. The paper develops a form of equation to predict the product size from a given feed size distribution. The behaviour of the various magnetite ores is compared to more standard test methods such as crushing work index and unconfined compressive strength.

The construction and placement of tunnels by means of jacking is continually advancing. This paper presents an outline of the construction of a major highway tunnel placed by a combination of mining and progressive placement by hydraulic jacking of precast units. Features of the project were the relatively shallow ground cover between rail and road routes over the tunnelling and jacking operations and also the weight of tunnel sections to be moved into position.

In a variety of methods, building an aground-underground seamlessly integrated model, and then analysing the formation and development mechanism of mining disaster based on this model is a useful way. In this paper, we studied an aground-underground seamlessly Integrated modelling method, and correspondingly given an aground-underground seamlessly integrated 3D spatial model, CSG+CD-TIN+GTP-TTS, by which we can carry out analysis of surface subsidence and underground laneway distortion efficiently, finally preliminary applications verified the effectiveness of this method.

Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.
