ENGIE, the current owner and operator of the Hazelwood Open Cut coalmine, are in the process of rehabilitating the mine site in preparation for mine closure. Bucket wheel excavators (dredgers) used during coal mining operations are in the process of being demolished, which involves the controlled felling of dredger components using explosives. With the mine located in close proximity to the Morwell township and other critical public infrastructure, it is crucial that the use of explosives and the possible implications for mine stability is well understood. The felling of Large Mining Equipment (LME) will apply an impact load immediately to the underlying coal benches with the adjacent coal batters potentially at risk also of adverse slope stability impacts. This paper presents the 3D stability modelling methods employed to successfully assess the potentially adverse stability implications associated with LME collapse.

Many aspects of water use in mining are driven by the technical requirements for water. There has been little consideration given to both the safety and the health requirements. Workers in the mining industry are exposed to water from a range of treated and untreated sources. The intended use of this water dictates the required quality of the water, sometimes with limited consideration for contact with miners. Particularly for underground workers, there is exposure while working in and walking through groundwater possibly contaminated by hazardous substances. Where controls are inadequate the outcomes of this exposure can result in disease, illness and injury û the costs of which can be significant. The situation could also arise where, due to the lack of human exposure, the controls are unwarranted and the financial cost unjustified from a health perspective but warranted from an equipment management standpoint. In addition to the health aspects, water can impact on a range of safety issues resulting from high pressure usage, dust suppression, fire fighting and other processes. The protocols and procedures in place need to consider the safety issues in addition to managing water usage. The current state of water management in mines from an occupational health and safety perspective has been ascertained from a survey targeting underground and surface coal and metalliferous mines. This survey considered the health and safety issues associated with water use, the types of surveillance, control protocols and the strategies that the mines have in place to manage the health and safety risks associated with water systems. The results assisted in the identification of potential occupational health and safety risks associated with water systems and the management processes that may be appropriate from a risk management perspective. Health and safety issues are often neglected but remain critical issues affecting the value of water to the mining industry.

"The feasibility of Dugald River mine was highly sensitive to mining and geotechnical design assumptions, particularly stope dilution and strike length. Following the start of initial mine development in 2012 the project was suspended in 2013 due to concerns over the complex ground conditions and resulting dilution, stope sizes and general mineability. A technical risk mitigation program was undertaken with a key aim to increase the level of confidence in predicting stope dilution.A stope sizing and dilution model was developed that provided a range of stope sizes based on geotechnical conditions and acceptable dilution. The original feasibility used a standard stope size of 25 m height by 25 m span. The new model was used as the foundation for the subsequent updated development plan for Dugald River that reduced much of the previous technical risk through greater confidence in the geotechnical and mining parameters.Several methods to predict stope hanging wall dilution and appropriate stope size have been used at Dugald River that relied on the modified stability graph method. Improvements to the method were identified as more rock mass and mining data became available through the completion of a trial stoping program, increased underground development and a large geotechnical core logging campaign. These improvements not only focused on the technical aspects of the model, but also on creating an easy to use and sustainable process that could be used at multiple stages of mine planning from life-of-mine (LOM) through to final stope design.Several of the main improvements are: understanding stope failure mechanisms and collecting only geological information that is most relevant detailed modelling restricted to the rock mass that could be expected to influence stope behaviour accounting for different stope failure mechanisms with the stability chart method assigning a geotechnical confidence factor to the data making it useful as a mine planning tool with integration into the mine planning process using performance of completed stopes to update and calibrate the model.The model provides recommended hydraulic radius and associated dilution estimates across the ore body. Providing the hydraulic radius allows planning engineers the option to consider single, double and triple lift stoping options suitable to mine scheduling. While the model has been calibrated for conditions at Dugald River the process used to create the model is not site specific and is applicable to other steeply dipping tabular orebodies.CITATION:Hassell, R, de Vries, R, Player, J and Carswell, J F, 2017. Achieving quick underground access after the completion of an open pit mine can be critical to maintaining project value and ensuring regular ore feed to the mill. This paper outlines the design and construction for two portals in an active open pit to commence underground development quickly whilst installing appropriate ground control to maintain long term access in an uncertain setting. Implementation of the portal designs was complicated by the change in underground design from hangingwall access to footwall access late in the life of the open pit due to preferable ground conditions. The portal locations did not have easy access for ground support installation integrated into the pit design due to the timing of the underground design changes. Practical implementation of the ground support systems subsequently became a key part of the project. Intact rock strength, rock mass characteristics, gradational weathering / alteration profile and structural information were modelled against pit displacement monitoring as the basis from which the portals were located and ground support schemes designed. Conditions around one of the portals necessitated numerical modelling to estimate the appropriate level of ground control for long term stability. The design was completed whilst the open pit was actively on-going and the portal areas not entirely exposed. The rock mass assessment and analysis for the two portals indicated different ground support scheme capacities would be required. The expected level of control for one of the portals also necessitated the use of monitoring with extensometers and load cells to ensure the rock mass response and ground support scheme performed as planned. Construction of the portals demonstrates the benefit of a considered design process, a plan which allows practical installation of ground support schemes where access is limited, the benefit of ongoing monitoring to ensure performance remains within design limits and the challenges involved working within an active pit with limited floor space.

Tailings management trade-off studies are done for all mining projects. There is wide variability in these studies as their approach, details and outcomes are determined by the experience and focus of the project team. While some of these approaches may consider the whole life cycle of the project others may focus only on capital and operating costs and direct environmental impacts. A complete life cycle approach is not standard practice. This paper describes an approach to implementation of formalised life cycle assessment (LCA) following ISO 14044 to tailings management trade-off studies. The paper describes the implementation of the methodological framework for the LCA, ie goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory analysis, life cycle impact assessment and life cycle interpretation. This standardised approach to implementing tailings management trade-off studies following the LCA approach will contribute to the state-of-the-practice in sustainable mine development.

Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. The Australian Constitution specifies certain powers of the Commonwealth Government to be used in its capacity as the national government. Certain of these broad powers result in the Com- monwealth having a facility to play an important part in the development of the mining industry. The State Governments, however, by virtue of their wide powers to regulate matters within the boundaries of a particular State, are more directly involved in the day to day administration and standards of activities of mining operations. In this respect the Common- wealth has something of a dual role because of its "State-like" responsibilities for the mainland Terri- tories. The components of the role that the Common- wealth Government discharges in relation to the mining industry are qualified to varying extents at particular times by the political persuasion of the Government. In absolute terms the components are as follows. 1. Economic management. The Commonwealth's fiscal and monetary policies have an important effect on industry as well as on State finances. In particular, the taxation regime employed by the Commonwealth Government is of direct importance to economic decision-makers in the mining industry. 2. International matters. International trade and commodity matters are, more and more, becoming an everyday part of the conduct of a nation's foreign affairs. 3. Exports. The Commonwealth Government, via the constitutional powers over overseas trade, have exercised varying degrees of control over mineral exports to achieve particular objectives. 4. Foreign capital and investment. Australia in general, and the mining industry in particular, is and will continue to be a net importer of capital. There appears to be bipartisan political agreement in Australia that foreign investment policy must be enunciated to ensure that investors. are in no doubt that Australia welcomes beneficial investment and technology from overseas. 5. Environment and Aborigines. Governments, both Commonwealth and State, have in recent years become more involved in these areas in response to their interpretations of community aspirations. 6. Energy. Access to assured supplies of energy is now viewed, by Governments worldwide, as a desirable asset to ensure the well-being of a nation's people and industries.

The Wiluna mining operations are centred near the township of Wiluna 750 kilometres north-east of Perth and 600 kilometres east of Geraldton.The Wiluna gold mines produced over two million ounces of gold, predominantly by roasting the refractory sulphide ores, before closing in 1947. In the period 1984 to 1992, 668 000 ounces of gold has been produced from free milling oxide ores and the retreatment of tailing. A plant capable of treating the refractory sulphide ores using the bacterial oxidation, Biox technique was commissioned in March, 1993.The Wiluna lode deposits are hosted by a sequence of very low grade metamorphosed mafic flows at the northern end of the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt. A strike slip fault system provided conduits for fluid migration; ore deposition occurred at favourable sites along the faults. Satellite mines at Gourdis and Wiluna South provide laterite and lode style oxide ores.The different styles of deposit and ore types at the Wiluna mining operations require a flexible approach to resource estimation and grade control practices.

"The Telfer processing plant commissioned its pyrite regrind and flotation circuit in August 2012. The circuit was designed to regrind pyrite concentrate to a p80 of <30µm then float a gold and copper rich concentrate before tails from the flotation circuit fed the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit downstream. Expected benefits were: improved CIL performance that would result from the finer grind and a reduction in cyanide soluble copper to the CIL circuit, as well as a small increase in overall flotation circuit recovery. While the benefits of a finer grind were soon realised, recovery in the post-regrind flotation circuit (named the ‘pyrite recleaner circuit’) was consistently and significantly lower than that expected based on laboratory test work. Selectivity in the pyrite recleaner circuit was virtually nil and copper reporting to the CIL circuit did not change as a result of the pyrite recleaner circuit operation.A pulp chemistry survey of the plant and comparison with the lab showed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) demand in the plant was much higher than that in the lab. Lab flotation tests conducted using nitrogen gas instead of air resulted in recoveries similar to those from the plant. It was identified that the freshly ground pyrite surfaces exiting the regrind mill were consuming oxygen in the slurry and there was insufficient oxygen available for collector adsorption and pyrite depression to occur. Test work, using a pilot regrind mill, showed that a reduction in grind size resulted in an increase in DO demand.A range of oxidising agents were tested in the laboratory and using a pilot flotation rig set-up in the plant. Oxygen was found to be the most reliable and effective agent and options for increasing oxygen delivery to the plant were explored. Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

Alkalis in the blast furnace are removed mainly by the slag, Alkali removal by the slag was studied as a rate process of alkali vapor- ization from the slag flowing through the dropping zone in the blast furnace. The vapor-, ization rate of I:20 from CaO-Si02-A1203 IZ20 slag was- measured under various experimental conditions. An empirical formula for the vaporization rate was obtained as a function of slag basicity, temperature and surface area per unit mass of slag. A simulation model of IC20 vaporization in the dropping zone was evaluated using the rate equation when the true velocity and surface area of the slag was de- termined from a flow dynamic model of counter- current gas-liquid flow through packed beds. The influence of the dynamic conditions of flow, as well as the slag basicity and temperature, on alkali removal by the slag was estimated.

Rehabilitation has been very effective in the short to medium term in providing a cost effective and reliable means of containing the side effects of land disturbance. However, there is still insufficient data to critically evaluate the sucess of rehabilitation in the long term. There is an urgent need to develop objective criteria to monitor the sucess of rehabilitation. The aim of rehabilitation in Australia has traditionally been to return disturbed land to natural vegetation compatible with the surrounding area. This objective has often been accepted instinctively without adequately addressing alternatives.

The Central Coal Mining Research Institute has developed the MAE acoustic emission monitoring system, the BD4-1 portable acoustic emission monitor and the MRB rock burst monitoring system. In the MAE system there is an IBM-PLAT, a receiver and 16 channels and the investigating range is 100 m. The main functions are detecting acoustic events from the working faces, periodically making statistics, prints, displays and storing of the results, and performing the off-line process such as drawing the curves of acoustic activity. The BD4-1 instrument has four channels, it works for more than 24 hours continuously, and keeps the data for more than 30 days after power tum-off. The BD4-1 is suited to the monitoring for a long or a short time as a fixed point where the system is invalid, especially to the monitoring of the acoustic activity promoted by the blasting. There is an IBM-PC/AT, a receiver and 16 channels spread 10 km in the system MRB. The system could on-line collect microseismic events throughout the whole mine, calculate the source location and the energy, and off-line draw the seismic activity draft of time-based or distribution in space. In practice, the forecasting is successful by using the acoustic emission and microseismic monitoring system and the portable instrument.

If a mining operation’s key performance indicators (KPIs) are tied to operational performance, then overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is an essential metric to track progress and to identify areas of improvement.

An estimation geologist has many tools in their kit and using the correct one for the job is vital for creating a useful model. Reconciliation is a key step to monitor the performance of a resource model and to ensure the correct tools have been selected and appropriate parameters are set. This paper presents an example of refining the estimation methodology for a Channel Iron Deposit (CID), resulting in an improved model. Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) CIDs are unique iron ore deposits located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and contribute a significant volume to the world’s seaborne iron ore market. A problematic feature of these deposits is the irregular dispersion of clay pods that cannot be delineated with confidence within the resolution of the exploration drilling. Resource to grade control reconciliation showed an over-prediction of high-grade material in the resource model. A fresh approach was required to improve grade and tonnage predictions. Historically, clay pods were delineated using traditional wireframing techniques and estimated using ordinary kriging with hard boundaries. The new method utilised indicator kriging to estimate the probability of clay. Probabilities generated from the indicator kriging estimate were used as an additional weighting following the ordinary kriging of grades. Results showed indicator kriging improved global high-grade tonnes reconciliation, however, as expected, it did not improve the spatial prediction of clay. Based on improved reconciliation results indicator kriging has now been adopted as a suitable alternative for analogous CIDs at RTIO. These improvements benefit the mine planning process, but do not replace grade control models.

As a project moves through the mine life cycle, the quantity of data available increases and the understanding of the orebody matures. Incorporating new information quickly and efficiently in current 3D models, is essential for adding value across the life-of-mine value chain. At the Martabe Gold Mine, the resource development group manages 14 drill rigs on six resource projects, including three operating mines. The Martabe deposits are geologically complex and the volume of new information that becomes available each day is substantial. It is imperative that new geological and assay information is integrated into the 3D models as soon as possible, so that drill planning and targeting can be modified accordingly. Martabe uses Leapfrog<sup>®</sup> 3D software to update and interrogate the 3D models on a dynamic basis as data becomes available. This results in faster and more effective changes to drill planning and schedules. The impact of this is better drill productivity and cost savings due to optimal drill targeting, and availability of up-to-date models incorporating the most current data. Mining of lignite is the largest bulk materials handling activity in Europe. In order to mine this lignite, with an average calorific value of only a third of bituminous coal in an economical way, highly efficient opencast mining technology is mandatory. The total continuous mining of overburden and lignite was introduced more than 60 years ago and was subsequently developed stepwise into the largest mass transport system of the world. In 2011, the Inden Mine, one of three RWE Power mines, stripped 90 Mbcm of overburden to produce 22 Mt of lignite. In total, nearly 100 Mt of Lignite was produced from the three mines of RWE Power in Germany. Beside bucket wheel excavators (BWE), several high-performance in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems, which allow the adoption of continuous mining systems, even for typical shovel and truck (S&T) operations, are available today. RWE Power assists operators considering a change from the S&T to IPCC technology, both in the planning process involving large-scale belt conveyor systems and later with operational know how transfer. In a number of cases, the challenges associated with this system change have been addressed and solved successfully. One key challenge is managing the development of skills for operating the belt conveyor systems efficiently. This paper compares the effectiveness of S&T to different configurations of continuous mining operation for an up to 170 m deep mine with a total annual output of 117 Mbcm. From the mine operatorÆs point-of-view, the quantity and skill level of staffing required for operation and maintenance are discussed in detail. The main conclusion of this paper is the larger the operation becomes and the longer the mine life is, the earlier fully continuous mining systems should be planned and implemented.CITATION:Schmitz, R, Durchholz, R and Heiertz, A-J, 2012. When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.
