The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted compliance assistance diesel particulate matter (DPM) sampling throughout the underground metal and non-metal mining industry. Based on that sampling, MSHA identified mines that were having difficulty meeting the DPM limit. To provide further assistance, MSHA then visited approximately 60 of the mines that were experiencing difficulty complying with the DPM standard. As part of these visits, DPM exposures were measured and control technologies for DPM were observed and assessed. Controls consisted of ventilation, clean engines, environmental cabs, alternative fuels, diesel particulate filters (DPF) and work practices. The focus of the follow-up compliance assistance visits was to assess control effectiveness and to make recommendations to mines experiencing difficulty in meeting the DPM standard. At each mine visited, the ventilation controls were evaluated, engine emissions were determined for equipment in use, environmental cabs were examined, and operational practices were noted. Additionally, control technologies, including alternative fuels and DPF were evaluated in several mines. A comparison was made of mine and section airflow to equipment particulate indices. Based on engine emissions, horsepower and operating time, the contribution of individual engine emissions to total emissions was made. Environmental cab integrity, positive pressure and air filtration systems were checked and operational practices relating to DPM exposure were assessed. This paper summarises the preference and magnitudes of controls that were typically used or needed for successful control of DPM. Additionally, results of the assessments of alternative fuels (including bio-diesel and water emulsion fuels) and DPF are presented.

Currently there is considerable interest in the production of DRI in Western Australia to take advantage of intense interest from the Asian market. Most DRI is produced using gas-based processes and is used as a feedstock in electric arc steel furnaces, otherwise known as mini-mills. This paper critically examines the technical and economic issues of various gas-based DR processes available today and recommends the most effective and attractive processes suitable for Western Australian iron ores.

Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. This data forms the basis of forecasting systems which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions and visual grade estimation are rountinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grade, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Routine reconcilation and check sampling allow calibration of these systems.

I have spent most of the past thirty-five years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American' Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited of Australia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining Investment.

Poor ground conditions associated with historical workings have presented significant challenges to the drilling of production downholes at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. The combination of foam and polymer drilling, the use of Aquacrete to drill through voids and the practice of lining completed holes has allowed downholes to be effectively drilled and blasted in delaminated ground.

Estimation of the semi-variogram is basic to the geostatistical processing of data. The most widely used arithmetic average estimator is here employed with various sampling patterns to calculate experimental semi-variograms in a deposit which is simulated to have a defined semi-variogram. Percentage differences between theoretical and experimental semi-variograms are reported.

The relevance of borehole and bore core evaluation to the design of underground coal mines is illustrated by considering the technical parameters of colliery design and the information from which they are constructed. The nature of this information is described, together with some methods for its storage, processing and presentation. Geophysical exploration techniques are compared as information sources. It is concluded that borehole and bore core evaluation is relevant and necessary for colliery design, but that optimum results will be obtained if drilling can be combined with geophysical techniques. Because of the inherent uncertainties in prediction of mining conditions the necessity of obtaining as much information as practicable from drilling evaluation is also stressed.

For the sampling of particulate materials in mineral exploration and mining, the fundamental sampling error (FSE) introduced by Gy is a measure of the constitutional heterogeneity of the sample lot and is expressed as the relative standard deviation of subsample grades of a particular mass. The FSE is presently regarded as an important indicator of quality for samples used in resource estimation. Constitutional heterogeneity describes an ideal state of heterogeneity with respect to all constituents of the lot such that the fundamental error among subsamples of a particular mass is minimised.In this paper, the term ‘sampling precision’ used in relation to mineral resource sampling usually refers to a statistic based on the assay results drawn from pairs of separate subsample splits of multiple sample lots. The pairs of splits are extracted after the lots have been prepared by crushing and pulverising to meet specified criteria of grain size and subsample mass. There is presently no generally accepted method of calculating the ‘sampling precision’ from such paired data but some form of the relative standard deviation that is consistent with definition of the FSE is preferred here. The work of Thompson and Howarth in the 1970s on geochemical analytical precision, which has been subjected to extensive examination and criticism by Stanley and Lawie (2007), and that of Francois-Bongarçon since the 1990s forms the background to the discussion in the paper.A significant aspect of the application of Gy’s sampling theory to sampling in gold deposits is the requirement that the fundamental error be maintained at less than ±20 per cent. The most important reason for this is to ensure that the effects of other sampling errors such as the grouping and segregation, and increment delimitation which can cause local and global biases in sampling are kept as small as possible. This paper is focused mainly on the quality of sampling in gold deposits and looks at an alternative to the use of a constant sampling precision applied to a collection of lots with varying average grade. A theoretical model for the FSE based on duplicate sampling is presented and the simulated results of the model are compared to practical outcomes of real duplicate pairs drawn from multiple sample lots. The goal of the work is to present a more informative analysis of duplicate sample data from multiple lots which may allow a more informed view of the potential for bias generating errors during sample preparation and processing.

Chromite was recorded among the rare minerals in the natural beach sand concentrates on the coast of Northern New South Wales by Whitworth(l) in 1931, and the commercial production of zircon and rutile from these beach sands has yielded concentrates of ilmenite with small amounts of chromium. The chromite is a detrimental impurity in the utilisation of the ilmenite, and the difficulties that attend the separation of the small amount of chromite from the ilmunite have raised suggestions from time to time that chromite occurs with ilmenite in composite grains. The absence of such composite grains and the nature of the chromite grains has been indicated by the following mineragraphic examination of magnetic concentrates containing chromite which were prepared by the C.S.I.R. Ore Dressing Laboratory, Melbourne University, from ilmenite concentrates from beach sands at Norrie's Head, County Rous, New South Wales and Stradbroke Island, Queensland.The magnetic concentrates from each locality are divided into five fractions, and the No. 1 concentrate is the most highly magnetic and the tailing the least magnetic. Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) deposit which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. Evaluations were made on former block caving mines at PT Freeport Indonesia (IOZ, GBT Area I and II) in order to design a more appropriate support system. As a permanent support, the thread bar bolt support system is widely used in the DOZ mine. The advantages of this system are ease of operation, quality control and high bond strength. The main problem of this system is the curing time of about 28 days to achieve maximum strength, necessitating the installation of a temporary support for its implementation. In this instance, the system was inefficient in operation and studies were required to find an alternative grouting system. This paper examines the evaluation of thread bar bolt support system and compares the performance of two types of grouting (resin cartridge and cement cartridge) with cement grouting performance. The evaluation is conducted with a pull out test. The advantages and disadvantages for each grouting method, comparison of cost estimation and grouting application in mine scale are presented in this paper.

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research programme being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the const- ruction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipe- line crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research programme is discussed.

The adsorption of gold cyanide by the weak base ion exchange resins, PAZ-4¦ and Duolite A-7C, the neutral polymeric adsorbent, Amberlite XAD7¦, and the strong base resins, PAZ-8~a and IRA-400 have been studied in both low and high salinity waters, and their performance compared with activated carbon. A systematic study has also been made of the effect of different ions (Na+, Cat+, Mgt+, Cl', SO4) ) on the gold adsorption capacity and kinetics of these resins. The results indicate that, contrary to popular belief, the ion exchange resin, can perform effectively in highly saline environments. The performance of the neutral polymeric adsorbent im- proves with increasing salinity but cannot match the performance of the ion-exchange resins.

Feed ore variability, the major disturbance into a mineral processing plant receives considerable attention operationally, and at research and strategic levels to ensure that the throughput of the ore are maintained at all times whilst encouraging a sustainable approach to recovering the valuable minerals from ore bodies. Effort and insights from mineralogical and processing characterisation (eg. ore hardness) of sub-ore body domains allows sequencing for processing to ensure consistency and throughput for the size sensitive grinding unit processes. Optimising the blast fragmentation has benefit as does pre-concentration using ore sorting. Blending of ore domains with different characteristics is common for operations. In recent years a number of technologies have become available for on-line and more rapid assessment of ore and have been discussed in a recent paper by Cameron et.al. (2016) as an opportunity for further utilisation of mine-to-mill (and mine to product) strategies. Current concepts have focused on extensive characterisation of ores so that current control practices can be realised and made more effective with relatively slow measurements and actuation. Conflicting claims and views on the priming of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) are reviewed; certain fallacies and misconceptions are rectified. Optimum priming systems for a range of blasthole conditions are indicated. Moves towards optimum priming lead to reductions in the combined cost of drilling, blasting and handling the material. With shallow blastholes, two-point priming is rarely warranted. Best blasting results from single priming are usually obtained when the primer is located near, but not at, the bottom of the blasthole. As blast- hole depth increases, two-point priming becomes more reliable and effective than single priming. For two-point priming, primers should be located such that detonation waves in the ANFO collide at grade level or, if preferred, within a hard band in the burden. Where blastholes are very deep and/or strata variations can be appreciable, three or more spaced primers are often justified. The effectiveness of a primer varies with its detonation pressure, diameter and length. Primer properties influence the velocity of detonation (VOD) near the primer, but do not affect the final (steady-state) VOD in the ANFO. The Gordonstone Project with a capital cost in excess of $500 million will become the largest underground coal mine in Australia. The project development decision was taken on 31 July, 1990 and at 31 May, 1991 construction was approximately 35 per cent complete. The first train of processed product coal will be railed to Gladstone during December 1992. The general theme of this paper therefore will address the planning and development processes at Gordonstone particularly the interrelatedness of technical, production, construction and environmental disciplines to ensure success during operations.

The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. Maintaining catch berm capacity in open pit mines through controlled blasting prevents production delays associated with managing risks associated with wall instability. A method has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation of presplit holes at Century Mine. Different controlled blasting techniques are used to control wall quality and decrease the risk. The performance of presplit drilling, in terms of deviation from design has been investigated. A methodology has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation in three dimensions. This methodology was converted into a series of algorithms capable of handling an extensive range of data. The methodology was applied to a case study at Century Mine to evaluate the performance of drilling on two presplit blasts. Overall, 67 drill holes were investigated in the case study. The drill hole deviation was quantified in terms of three parameters: skewness, linearity and drill hole deviation parameter. Methods for quantifying each parameter were developed. Skewness, a measure of the amount of curvature and linearity, was defined as the measure of the consistency of the gradient of the drill hole. Drill hole deviation parameter is defined as the average measured deviation of the surveyed drill hole position from the design position. Acceptable drill hole deviation tolerances for each of the defined parameters were developed by analysing drill hole deviation parameters with respect to implications to catch berm capacity. Verification of the methodology was confirmed through the comparing of the completed drill hole deviation results using both visual inspection and cross analysis for each of the three methods. Holes with an R squared value of less than 0.97 for skewed deviation were classified as having skewed deviation, while holes with a difference in gradient of 3.5 were classified as having linear deviation. The results show that 76 per cent of the drill holes had deviation. Of this, 19 per cent were skewed, 57 per cent had linearity and 12 per cent contained both skewed and linearity deviation.

To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

In this paper, we introduce a methodology to optimise mining equipment operation in terms of the conflicting concerns of productivity and availability. We also introduce the concept of damage points and equipment dutymeters. These provide the mine management with tools to monitor the success of such optimisation. Since we have quoted the results of an on-going Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project, the apparent focus of this article is on draglines. However, the concept is equally applicable to other equipment. Mining is the type of business that requires a large investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product that is sold at a relatively low unit cost. In such a business, the key to competitiveness lies in achieving the full realisation of capital investment ie sustained production at high levels. Some of the concepts outlined in this paper are essential components of this picture.
