This paper attempts to draw together the experience of over 30 years of research and practice in the United Kingdom on the rehabilitation of abandoned metalliferous mining wastes. The reliance on water when the mines were operating has implications for water quality and the techniques used to restore sites to alleviate the principal impacts of the mines. Drivers of reclamation included concerns about human health from wind blown dust and pollution of watercourses as well as perceptions of dereliction. Techniques of reclamation used involved removal of spoil from near to surface watercourses, capping of spoil, diversion of watercourses, use of impermeable membranes, prevention of surface sinks into underground workings and the use of constructed wetlands. The issues to be dealt with in mine reclamation have become more complex and sometimes diverge. The schemes in the 1990s described have been effective in dealing with pollution from spoil heaps and small but significant adit discharges; however, significant issues, particularly those of large flows of polluted water from mine sites, still need to be dealt with. Although the paper describes the legacy of mining, which largely finished in the late 19th/early 20th century, similar issues but on a larger scale are to be found in more recent mining, for example Eastern Europe. In many of these areas minerals still remain to be won and dealing with this legacy may fall on new mining developments.

A compound cylinder-cyclone system, fitted with a flow control valve between the cylinder and cyclone, has been used for coal slurry sizing experiments in the range approximately 100 to 300 micrometres. An important feature of the system is the ability to adjust the cut size of the separation over wide limits by adjustment of the flow control valve. Results have been compared with typical fine screening operations. Under roughly equivalent conditions the compound cyclone system can achieve better elimination of extreme fines, but is not as sharp as the screen for coarser size cut-off. Simulations of systems involving combinations of the cylinder-cyclone system with screens indicate that the advantages of both sizing devices can be combined to yield accurately sized products for fine coal cleaning, at much less cost than using screens alone.

One of the main energy efficiency opportunities identified from the majority of mine site energy audits is to optimize the comminution circuit to reduce energy consumption through improved throughput and product size distribution. Typical analysis reviews comminution process efficiency/inefficiency i.e. utilization of grinding mills, process bottlenecks and product vs. target size, to identify instances of overgrinding or undergrinding. From this, it is possible to establish the potential improvement that could be gained through formal plant optimization and what the optimization program would entail. It can also sometimes reveal immediate opportunities for process improvement. This paper presents steps that can be taken to optimize the efficiency of comminution circuits.

Patterns of successful metallic mineral discoveries in Australia are analysed for the last three decades. A trend towards more discoveries of poorly expressed and blind ore- bodies is evident and can be expected to continue. Discoveries using traditional and conceptual geological techniques have proportionally declined but are expected to continue at a significant level for a decade or so. Improvements in the quality and numbers of geological exploration models and in the quality of available basic geoscience data have aided successful discovery in recent years. Although some orebodies for the Year 2001 have already been found maintenance of a strong mineral inventory demands that more and better geological models are applied. Empirical models need to be improved by critical multi- disciplinary integrated studies of mineral occurrence at all scales. New models can and will be developed by various means. If application of these models is made with all the innovation, initiative and unorthodoxy that can be mustered then new discoveries will result. Greater attention to the surface expression of orebodies will also lead to new discoveries. Review and follow-up of old data in the light of new concepts will provide yet another discovery route.

"Establishing ventilation in the early stages of a new mine is an essential step to achieve scheduled outcomes that ultimately drive the financial success of an operation. If the primary ventilation is not in place in time to support a contractorÆs work output, then the ore delivery is likely to be severely impacted. Options to increase ventilation in order to address shortfalls are limited. This in turn can lead to reduced revenue generation at a time when a mine is at its highest capital outlay. This can have implications for any company, but even more for an explorer moving to producer. The ventilation put in place to cover the start-up period is also unlikely to cover any extended or increased load required to meet schedule delays.The following paper examines two issues in relation to ventilation with a focus on small to medium projects where the company is establishing a mine using a mining contractor. The issues being: potential impacts on the contract and tender process when using a mining contractor key mine design considerations, such as æcrunch timeÆ, as they interact with ventilation achieving a successful ramp up.A recommendation is made for higher levels of detail around secondary ventilation leading up to the primary fan installation. The information should be included as part of the tendering process and preliminary project execution planning. Understanding the æcrunch timeÆ concept can lead to strategies, as well as back up plans, to minimise any negative impact.By understanding key risks around primary ventilation establishment for a new mine, detailed design work can be completed where it is needed most. Value is added by reducing uncertainty and a payback with better contract terms and a more robust ramp up plan. Shortwall continuous mining as first introduced at Burwood colliery, and currently being used at John Darling, Lambton, and Corrimal collieries, is a method of coal winning which was pioneered in the Newcastle district. The system uses individual hydraulic self-advancing chocks for roof support and the coal winning operation is by continuous miners and shuttle cars. Where physical conditions are suitable the system provides a safe, efficient and economically viable basis for pillar extraction. Shortwall operations have been conducted successfully in the Victoria and Dudley seam, near the coastal fringe of the Newcastle district and are now being tried out in the more difficult conditions of the Bulli seam in the Illawarra district.

A modular computer-based monitoring system for mines is dis-cussed. The system consists of the following modules : production moni-toring system HADES, methane monitoring system CMC, seismoacoustic and seismometric systems SAK and SYLOK, communication systems. The system enables one to compose flexible,` economic structures according to the specification of a mine. Application of microcomputer-based monitoring and control systems in coal preparation plants also is discussed.

Safe, efficient production is a common objective for all large open pit mines. Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and regulations aimed at protecting workers, several people die each year in mining equipment-related collisions. The limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators coupled with difficult operating conditions are major contributing factors to the majority of mining equipment collisions. Off road haul trucks are the most common type of machinery involved in surface accidents. These vehicles represent the primary target for improving safety performance by mine operators. Although several commercial products have been introduced to address these issues, none have achieved significant market acceptance. The current collision avoidance solutions lack integration with onboard fleet management and equipment health systems. To achieve acceptance in industry, any collision avoidance system must offer high reliability, minimal false alarms, and value for money. With these criteria in mind, this paper will examine the pros and cons of the various technological approaches to collision avoidance in an open pit mining environment. The unique global positioning systems (GPS) and camera-based proximity detection solution on offer from Modular Mining Systems will be described. This solution uses intelligent filters to minimise false alarms. Tight integration with fleet management provides context information to enhance warnings and enable back-office near-miss analysis. Available today, this combination creates a practical solution to improve the situational awareness of heavy equipment operators, at a compelling price point. Future directions for maximising heavy equipment operator situational awareness will also be examined.

Since Jameson Cell flotation technology was first installed in a coal flotation application in 1988/89 at Newlands Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) there have been fundamental improvements to its design which has led to its current status as the leading technology in Australia for fine coal flotation. These improvements, which include key hardware modifications, consist of the re-development of the orifice plate to produce considerable increase in wear life and reduction in power consumption for a given air entrainment and a significant increase in the amount of air that is entrained. Modifications to the downcomer allow maximisation of residence time and air entrainment while changes to the feed and air distribution system allows a reduction in installation cost and a reduction of solids ingress into the air line. Additionally, operational improvements such as the use of recycle to maintain constant flow to the cell feed are discussed. The recent installation at Hail Creek in the Bowen Basin, which consists of three B6000/20 Jameson Cells (6 m diameter bottom-fed distributor with 20 downcomers) will be reviewed as a case study. The latest design and operability of the cells are summarised and compared against one of the original designs at Riverside CHPP also in the Bowen Basin.

In tunnel construction or other underground construction, a detailed knowledge of the rock mass ahead of the face is essential for both safety and efficiency of work. Many tunnel collapses have been reported to occur because of lack of appropriate information, such as the geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face. One of the methods which can identify rock mass conditions is the application of drill monitoring data obtained from blasting drill holes, which can detect abrupt and unexpected changes in ground conditions, geological structure and the mechanical and physical properties of rock mass. This paper presents a new approach to how drill performance parameters can be used for prediction of geological conditions ahead of tunnel face. The predictions are based on monitoring the drill parameters of instantaneous advance speed, torque and tool pressure. In order to assess conditions ahead of tunnel face, tunnel seismic profiling (TSP) and a horizontal boring investigation were undertaken and the obtained data compared to the drilling data. The predicted results using drilling performance parameters correlated well with geological conditions ahead of tunnel face.

A new bench blast design method and its realization with the assistance of the computer is introduced. The basic design principle is to define a rhomb cell, called fully- fractured zone, through a series of full scale bench crater tests and apply this geometric pattern in multi-hole, multi- row blast design. To illustrate the design method, the optimization process and assessment of blast performance are presented in the context of a case study.

Underground coal mines in the United States are in the process of completing installations for tracking and communication systems, mandated by Congress after a number of recent coal mine disasters. Yet, evaluation, modelling and testing of such systems has lagged due to legislated changes, abruptly introduced into the coal mining industry. System installation in a wide array of mine types, configurations, layouts and characteristics has provided a wealth of information regarding their potential in underground environments. Data collected from numerous installations for a variety of systems can be used to further define true capability and accuracy of communication and tracking packages. This paper describes a uniform means of evaluating the performance of a communication and tracking system. Several performance measures are proposed and described. These measures can also be predicted using an interactive software program. This program predicts the signal propagation, given the input mine characteristics and layout, with numerical and visual feedback. New or alternative system installations can also be more accurately designed to potentially minimise initial system cost and time required for trial and error installs. The focus of this research is to develop tools and protocols that can evaluate and measure the effectiveness of installed underground communication and tracking systems.

The flocculation of hydrophobic magnetite with gold was examined as a possible means of recovering fine (95 per cent were possible for 1.5 - 3.0 ¦m and 5.5 - 7.5 pm gold sizes. The effect of process variables on the flocculation process was explained by variations in the adhesive force between the gold and magnetite.

Late Cenozoic ore deposits "Precious and base metal-rich" and " Sn-Ag-polymetallic"of Northern Puna are associated either with Middle Miocene dacitic volcanic-dome complexes or with Upper Miocene dacitic-andesitic volcanic centers. Ore mineralogies and their related volcanism are discussed. A strong link is observed between the Cenozoic Metallogenetic Province of Northern Puna and the Southern Bolivia Tin and Polymetallic provinces.

Bulk explosives provide the energy to move a rock mass and reduce it to an optimal size (fragmentation). The intensity of energy needed depends on several factors including a customer’s geology and end objectives. An energy mapping tool has been developed to help customers to determine their bulk explosive needs based on these objectives.At one end of the energy map dealing with high-energy products, a new range of bulk explosives products for surface mining have been developed. With these products, it is possible to provide blast designs with up to nearly triple the relative bulk strength (RBS) of ANFO, and address primary focus areas for mining operations, including the reduction of drill and blast costs, improvements in production rates, better face advance through improved broken stock management, better drill productivity, improved milling efficiency and lower energy costs in surface mines.In this paper, field trial results from the first level of new high-energy products are presented. These products have an RBS 2.25 times that of ANFO. Industry variations of a smaller diameter (89 mm) pumped product for civil quarrying applications, and for large diameter (311 mm) hard-rock metalliferous mines are presented. For both cases, the run-of-mine fragmentation levels obtained with the new bulk explosives are contrasted with the fragmentation profile generated with the currently accepted product range applied in similar geological conditions. The new products show increased fragmentation across the measured size distribution, with reduction in P50 values of 20 and 37 per cent over the currently used product for the 311 mm and 89 mm diameter blastholes respectively.CITATION:Wilkinson, D, Rigby, G, Norgard, J and Thomson, S, 2015. This paper introduces a novel roll crusher design, which incorporates non-cylindrical crushing rolls. The use of non-cylindrical rolls enables the crusher to achieve a greater reduction ratio than is possible with conventional roll crushers. Referred to as the NCRC (non-cylindrical roll crusher), the new crusher incorporates two rolls comprised of an alternating arrangement of plane and convex or concave surfaces. The two rolls are complementary and arranged so that when they rotate the convex and concave surfaces of each roll are substantially opposed. With the rolls rotating in opposite directions at the same speed, this arrangement produces a gap between the rolls that remains approximately constant. Discontinuities on the roll surfaces provide improved angles of nip, which increase the probability of larger particles being drawn into the crusher. Initial tests on a scale prototype of the NCRC have indicated that reduction ratios exceeding 10:1 are achievable.

In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

Optimisation and mathematical formulations for open pit design and long-term production scheduling have been available since the 1960s. There are two main concerns in the application of existing mixed integer programming (MIP) models in open pit mines: a. the feasibility of generating both optimal solutions and practically mineable scheduling patterns and b. the inability to deal with in situ variability in orebodies and account for uncertainty. In dealing with these issues, a general open pit production scheduling method for multi-element deposits is presented and subsequently used to optimise the long-term production schedule in a nickel laterite deposit. The application shows the weaknesses of MIP formulations in terms of generating optimal solutions as well as practically feasible mining patterns. The application of the same formulation in the presence of in situ orebody variability and uncertainty uncovers a major reason for deviations of scheduled production from actual production, and outlines additional limits of traditional optimisation formulations as well as future needs.
