Rockbursts, as they occur in South African deep level gold mines, have a lot in common with natural earthquakes. Both violently release seismic energy and cause damage to underground and surface structures. Rockbursts are the main cause of fatalities in deep gold mines and the problem may increase in severity with future mining at greater depths. Although the emphasis in Rock mechanics is on the prevention of rockbursts, prediction would provide a partial solution to the rockburst problem. A research project was initiated in 1981 on Western Deep Levels to investigate the possibility of detecting and identifying precursive microseismic activity. This project has succeeded in locating potential sources of seismic events with reasonable confidence. The timing of these events may be estimated with less confidence, and an important parameter, namely the potential size of the rockburst, still cannot be determined. An example of a large seismic event and its associated precursive activity are discussed. Practical prediction systems will, at least for some time, involve subjective decision making which will place a new responsibility on the mine manager as well as the rockburst specialist. The moral pressure on the manager as the final decision maker will probably be greater than the fear of leqal prosecution.

Open pit mining began in 1978 at the Woodlawn base metals deposit. For its ten years as an open pit the mine was financially unsuccessful as a combined result of difficult metallurgy and industrial unrest. In 1985 CRA bought out two American joint venturers with a view to going underground and a prerequisite to expending capital on developing an underground operation was to improve the industrial climate, work practices and mining methods.Following feasibility work, continuous production from the underground mine began in 1986 using mechanised cut and fill methods and a workforce trained under a multiskilling program. Men with no previous underground experience were trained by supervisors with backgrounds as miners to undertake all the work that is required with increases in skill levels being rewarded with increases in pay.

BHP Minerals Ltd operates an open cut iron ore mining operation on Koolan Island, off the coast north of Derby in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The mine comprises a number of pits, the largest of which is situated adjacent to the coast on the southern side of the island. The lowest bench is currently at RL +2 m, and the mine has planned ultimate depth of RL -82 m. Mining has already extended below the pre-existing water table level, and below mean sea level. In 1984, an extensive program of drilling, geophysics and test pumping was instigated to evaluate the aquifer hydraulic properties and the nature of the groundwater flow regime. With the aid of computer modelling, predictions have been made of the likely dewatering and depressurization requirements, and a conceptual pumping and drainage system has been designed.

Pasminco is actively addressing the optimal utilisation of the known orebody at the Broken Hill mine, in addition to actively exploring for economic mineralisation in the region. As part of the policy of better utilising the known mineralisation a major upgrade of geological systems at the mine was initiated. The software chosen for this change was Maptek's Vulcan, mainly because of the ease of use of this package. Rather than having numerous data sources in varying software packages the mine aimed to limit interfaces and packages. The decision to upgrade the mine's software was not taken lightly, especially in view of the inature stage of Broken Hill mining operations. However, the current mine life of Pasminco Broken Hill mine is I I years, which is longer than many new mines setting up in Australia today. Also, a more sophisticated system brings with it a better understanding of the economic mineralisation, possibly extending the mine life further. The process of moving the Broken Hill databases into Vulcan was a huge task which included, database transfer, digitising, wire framing, modelling and eventually ore resource calculation. To ensure the validity of the new ore resource accounting system, the existing system was run as a duplicate for the introductory year, providing a comparison and if necessary a safety net. The benefits of such a change, however, became apparent almost immediately. Area geologists realised the opportunity to revise geological interpretations in their areas of responsibility, enabling them to obtain a better understanding of orebody morphology. Three- diniensional analysis provides an excellent method by which review of ore targets both in the underground and mine lease exploration areas can he made. As each new find of mineralisation enters the system and hopefully extends the mine life, the opportunities for further mineral exploration in Broken Hill area by Pasminco are enhanced.

This paper describes the design of the precast concrete segmental lining for the 13.1 m internal diameter and 450 mm thick, 2.4 km long mainline tunnels for the Waterview Connection project in Auckland for the New Zealand Transport Agency.The design and detailing of this segmental lining presented some noteworthy challenges, including an alignment that has sections of low cover in soft ground. Key points of interest are that this precast segmental lining is the largest to ever include steel fibres as the primary method of reinforcement and the lining includes cams on circumferential joints to control ring deformation.The paper describes some of the key design decisions that were made in a collaborative manner with the construction team, tunnel boring machine manufacturer, segment manufacturer and the designers.CITATION:Mahajan, R, Kuras, A and Pradhan, S, 2014. Vaal Reefs Mine annually produces some 75 tonnes of gold. Stoping operations, using a scattered mining method, are conducted on several reef horizons within Witwatersrand Supergroup metasediments of the Klerksdorp Goldfield. Current grades average 7.19 g/t Au over a 133cm stoping width. The reef horizons, of which the Vaal Reef is the most important, consists of 2.9Ga palaeoplacer deposits at the base of low angle unconformities. Typically, a reef comprises a mature quartz and chert conglomerate with a siliceous matrix and intergranular pyrite and carbon. Geologists are primarily responsible for underground mapping and supervising of drilling programs. To a lesser extent they are involved with sampling, grade control, ore reserve estimation, mine planning and rock mechanics. Due to a general decline in grades of gold mines, an escalation of production costs, and with the current weak gold price, it has become essential to improve production efficiencies. Consequently the role of the mine geologist has moved away from that of simply keeping the mining people "on reef'. Greater emphasis is being placed on refining geological models to assist in selective mining of the reef and investigations of secondary reef horizons are encouraged. Exploration within fault losses and re-evaluation of pillars is important, and geologists are becoming more involved with sampling and grade control exercises.

At the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines, the largest diluent of the copper concentrate is liberated fine pyrite. Laboratory flotation tests carried out as a function of grind and flotation Eh in combination with surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have identified the major mechanisms of iron sulphide flotation. It was found that a significant proportion of the iron sulphide minerals had surface coverages of graphitic carbon, sufficient to impart moderate hydrophobicity in the absence of collector. A smaller, but economically significant proportion of chalcopyrite was also affected by the graphitic carbon coating. Two methods were tested to reduce the impact of the natural floatability of the iron sulphides on concentrate grades. 1. Depression through the use of organic depressants. 2. Preflotation to remove the "naturally hydrophobic" iron sulphides (flotation independant of Eh ) prior to chalcopyrite flotation. Preflotation was tested at the pilot plant scale. It was found that the amount of chalcopyrite reporting to the preflotation rougher concentrate could be minimised through flotation at a mildly reducing Eh by the use of nitrogen as the flotation gas to maintain the low Eh conditions resulting from grinding. The preflotation rougher concentrate was upgraded to an iron sulphide concentrate or a low grade copper concentrate.

"Geometallurgy is an important addition to any evaluation project or mining operation. As a discipline, it seeks to maximise the net present value (NPV) of an orebody while minimising technical and operational risk. It also aims to promote sustainable development and initiatives by ensuring that all stages of extraction are performed in an optimal manner from a technical, environmental and social perspective. To achieve these goals, development of innovative technologies and approaches along the entire commodity value chain are being established (Glass, 2016). Geometallurgy has been shown to increase operational stakeholder collaboration, creating an environment for knowledge sharing and improved data acquisition and interrogation, with the end result being the integration of such data into mine planning and scheduling. A strong correlation between the reduction degradation index (RDI) of production sinter and the titanium content of the sinter mix was identified at the Ruukki sintering plant between 2000 and 2004. The titanium distribution in different mineral phases was studied using samples from pot sintering tests. Titanium additions were made using two different materials: rutile and crushed titanium-bearing haematite pellets. While both titanium additions clearly increased the RDI, titanium seemed to favour secondary haematite. The study focused on the effect of titanium in haematite, because haematite is reduced to magnetite in the RDI test. During the haematite-magnetite reduction, reduction degradation was observed. To increase accuracy, the phenomenon was investigated first by sintering and then reducing synthetic minerals under controlled laboratory conditions at the University of Oulu. The effect of titanium oxide in solid solution in magnetite on the magnetite to haematite transformation rate was studied first in order to simulate the final stage of the sintering process. In other experiments, haematite samples doped with 0.5, 2.0 and 5.0 wt per cent titanium oxide were studied using thermogravimetry under a controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/H2/N2). Sintered samples were reduced using the same gas composition as in the RDI test. Polished sections for optical microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis were prepared from both reduced and oxidised samples and unreduced sintered samples. The titanium oxide content of haematite had a clear effect on reduction degradation of the samples. Furthermore, increasing titanium oxide content in solid solution in magnetite radically accelerated the oxidation rate. Similar observations regarding the effects of titanium have been reported earlier, but this was the first time the effect of very small additions of titanium were shown to deteriorate blast furnace burden quality and a reason suggested behind the process.

Mount Isa Mines Limited operates one of the worldÆs largest underground mines in North West Queensland. ItÆs mining and smelting complex produces copper anode, crude lead bullion (containing silver), and zinc concentrate. Copper is recovered in the Copper Concentrator from chalcopyrite ore, converter smelter slag and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag via grinding and flotation operations. During 2002 a project to optimise cleaner circuit capacity was commenced. Its aims were to minimise copper losses and minimise slag/chalcopyrite cross contamination by reconfiguring existing flotation equipment and the addition of new flotation capacity. To minimise cross contamination a Jameson Cell was installed and dedicated to cleaning of slag concentrates, which had formerly been conducted by three flotation columns operating in series. The flotation columns were re-configured to operate in parallel and dedicated to upgrading chalcopyrite concentrate. In addition a Jameson Cell was installed to reject entrained copper from a prefloat concentrate consisting of talc and carbonaceous pyrite. This paper discusses the logic behind the cleaner circuit expansion, recent test work relating to the Jameson Cell and the installation and commissioning phases. Difficulties relating to the commissioning are reviewed and the solutions to problems are highlighted. The benefits the reconfigured circuit has provided to Mount Isa Mines are also discussed.

A mine waste rock dump does not have any intrinsic value, yet is an inevitable structure in surface mining operations. Since the purpose of mining is to maximise profit, possible expenditure reduction in hauling waste rock to the dump, which can represent up to 50 per cent of the total operating cost, is highly desirable. Apart from cost, potential acid mine drainage (AMD), due to seepage from surface waste rock dumps containing reactive waste rock, could threaten the ecological balance, drinking water supplies and irrigation systems downstream from a mine site. In order to minimise these potential risks, selective placement of benign and reactive waste rock, and the encapsulation of reactive waste rock by benign waste rock, need to be carried out during the construction of the rock dump.In this paper, a new methodology, based on mixed integer programming (MIP) is developed to manage waste rock dumping. The model aims to minimise waste rock haulage costs by locating the optimum destination(s) for each waste rock block, while at the same time controlling the placement of reactive waste rock to minimise the potential for AMD. Tests on small-scale virtual data demonstrated that the model is capable of dealing with selective placement of different waste rock types, encapsulating reactive, potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock, and stockpiling benign waste rock for encapsulation and rehabilitation purposes. The solution time for the MIP model is far less than the traditional manual approach, and the resulting schedule is up to 46 per cent more cost effective.CITATION:Li, Y, Topal, E and Williams, D J, 2012. One of the key challenges for the mining industry globally is the rehabilitation of mine waste, and Queensland is no exception. Out of pit waste structures including waste rock dumps and tailings storage facilities, create novel landforms which require ongoing maintenance and pose risks to the environment and sometimes to communities. Where multiple mines co-exist, such as parts of Queensland’s Bowen Basin, individual mines can often be constrained by adjoining operations. This presents opportunities for broader rehabilitation strategies to be considered, more than the current single mine focus, that may provide better environmental outcomes for a region. Given recent global disasters involving tailings storage facilities, and our team’s endeavours to drive Queensland to achieve leading practice in mined land rehabilitation, we are exploring the potential to maximise in-pit tailings disposal opportunities for coalmines through shared waste management strategies. A shared waste management strategy is where two (or more) mines, owned by different companies and operated under different environmental permits, transport tailings from one mine to the other in close proximity, for disposal in a disused pit. This would reduce the number of waste structures to be built, operated, rehabilitated, and managed in perpetuity. Our objectives are to identify and remove barriers to tailings transfers between sites to:  minimise environmental risk  minimise long-term liability of managing mining waste and associated structures  support improved outcomes for the local community. To determine the scale of coal waste disposal practices in Queensland, internal data and publicly available imagery was analysed by the Department of Environment and Science in 2022. Approximately 6500 ha of land in Queensland is utilised for coalmine tailings storage facilities or codisposal areas, with ≈ 3700 ha of this being out of pit.

The use of shotcrete as an efficient means of both temporary and permanent ground support has continued to grow over the last 30 years, with its use underground now commonplace around the world. However, the development of analytical design methods has lagged advances in material and application technologies. Historically, part of the reason for this was a lack of understanding of how shotcrete linings actually worked. Considerable progress has been made in this area in recent years and this paper attempts to summarise the current state of practice with respect to shotcrete lining design. It then concludes by summarising areas where the authors consider future research and development is still required.

The load capacity of a friction bolt has long been regarded as 4 t/m of embedment for ground support design analysis and supported by in situ pull test results. In recent years, the authors have observed lower pull test results or inconsistent results which were rarely sighted in the early 2000s. The lower pull test results indicated in some cases that reliable friction bolt capacity (≥90 per cent of results) is closer to 3 t/m of embedment with some geotechnical engineers adjusting the ground support parameters in the design work accordingly. This can be in contrast with other mines which reliably obtain 4 t/m (or greater) using the same suppliers bolt in similar ground conditions. This raised several questions: • What is the effect of poor installation (bolt twist or bolt hole deviation)? • Does the performance of friction bolts vary in different rock masses? • Does bolt performance vary between suppliers? • What effect does increased jumbo feed/percussion/rotation settings have? • Have the bolt dimensions or steel strip width changed? • Have the physical bolt properties changed? • Have the steel properties changed? This paper was aimed to answer as many of these questions as possible and discuss each variable in detail. This project included friction bolt trials at various mine sites across Australia, multiple friction bolt manufacturers, steel manufacturers and laboratory analysis. The paper also includes discussion on what the authors consider best practice for pull testing. It should be noted, the terms ‘friction stabiliser’ and ‘split set’ used in this paper are used in a generic manner and is not linked to any specific ground support supplier. Whilst its acknowledged within the industry the term split set and friction stabiliser is used interchangeably, the authors acknowledge that the term split set is a trademark of Split Set Mining Systems and has been used in context in this paper.

"It has long been recognised that the barometer infl uences areas of underground coal mines that havebeen sealed off from the current, or active, mine workings but it appears litt le formal research hasbeen done on how the barometer aff ects the goafstream sample point. Based on statistical analysis of samples from a number of mines from Queensland and New South Wales it can be concluded that there is a direct correlation between the barometer and oxygen concentration at a goafstream sample point. To help mitigate some of the high consequence hazards within the underground coal industry and protect the health and safety of the persons within that environment, many monitoring tools are utilised. A control recognised in management plans prescribed under New South Wales and Queensland legislation is the need to conduct monitoring to identify the early warning signs of spontaneous combustion. One of the monitoring tools utilised involves a bagsample being collected from a goafstream sample point then returned to the surface for analysis.When the sample is incorrectly collected, the resultant analysis from a gas chromatograph provides litt le value to the persons charged with the obligation of operating the coal mine at an acceptable level of risk. This, therefore, increases the probability of spontaneous combustion leading to a loss of equipment, mine and in the worst case, life. When the sample is collected correctly, the analysis presents early warning signs of low level oxidation allowing corrective action to be taken, to prevent the oxidation accelerating to spontaneous combustion. The eff ect the barometer has on this sample point should be recognised and the knowledge imparted to persons who conduct sampling to remove a variable in the bag sample collection process. This will ensure the persons operating the mine have a bett er understanding of what is happening within their longwall goaf."
