IMA Engineering (IMA) and Mine On-Line Service (MOLS) companies have used on-line sensors for analysing ore and waste rock in mining for more than 25 years. Today IMA on-line sensors are used in various stages of the mining process including on-line analysis of drill cores, drill chips, ore and waste in loader bucket, ROM ore analysis on belt conveyor belt and in bulk ore sorting and in slurry analysis in concentrators. During years of extensive field experience and testing we have found that the waste rock dilution and ore losses create much larger economic and environmental losses than has been previously recognized. According to our studies the main reason is limited number of analysis already in exploration when drill cores or drill cuttings are used in block modelling. The same happens in production because too few and biased samples from benches are used to estimate the ore grade. Much more than today estimated amount of waste enters the mill and considerable volumes of ore losses happen at the same time. The ore grade on the benches and in muck piles is averaged and “homogenized” with averaged and biased samples. These are the main root causes of waste rock dilution and ore losses. Sensor based preconcentration can be the remedy to waste rock dilution and ore losses. This presentation will show examples of the use of on-line sensors in preconcentration when analysing ore and waste rock in drill cores, drill cuttings, on conveyor belt and in bulk ore sorting. Waste rock removal in preconcentration has direct effect on energy consumption in crushing and grinding and chemicals in concentrator. In concentrator waste is separated and goes to tailings pond, however, preconcentration directly reduces the volume of the tailings. In our presentation we will cover cases in base metals and in gold mines.

Exploration, including research, has fuelled the enormous expansion of the Australian mineral industry in the last three decades. Analysis of success and failure in exploration and research has therefore potentially powerful lessons and messages which may be used to influence the future shape and direction of the mineral industry. Research has been an integral part of organised corporate mineral exploration since its beginnings in Australia in the 1930s. In corporations, the activity generally called project generation or new project development is the main expression of exploration research but mostly it goes unidentified and poorly documented except perhaps when a successful discovery is made and reported on. The competitive nature of exploration means that extended and detailed analysis of corporate exploration research across the industry is impossible to achieve.

This paper proposes a set of new approaches for the optimisation of planning and designs in mines by means of evolutionary algorithms, which include the determination of ore grade, layout of development system, selection of mining methods and production scheduling in underground mines. The applications indicate that evolutionary algorithms are particularly suitable to the complex and complicated problems in mines.

Construction of twin stacked railway tunnels through mixed ground conditions in the heavily populated urban environment of Hong Kong, including tunnelling in poor ground conditions, with low cover and under or adjacent to sensitive structures with minimal impact was the challenge presented by the tunnelling section of the Kowloon Southern Link project. This paper details how twin 1.1 km tunnels of 7.0 m internal diameter were driven by Mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in mixed ground through one of the exclusive shopping and hotel districts in Kowloon. The paper addresses the challenges required to be considered and managed for the success of the project, including ground conditions, TBM selection, Mixshield TBM operation, settlement monitoring and control, ground- borne noise and vibration, proximity to utilities, buildings, roads and operating railways.

The paper presents a model of a multigrade monitoring-management structure for support to decision making and management in real and extended time in mineral processing (MP). The model was created as a result of a long-lasting research, design and development of mining, computer integrated monitoring-management systems. Apart from the general explanations, the authorsÆ state in the introduction that efficiency of a system for support to decision-making and management in mineral processing is more difficult to achieve by conventional approaches, than by the fuzzy logic approach. Starting from the multiphase structure of process flows in MP, the following are process and monitoring-management oriented graphs. The graphs served as a foundation of the multigrade hierarchical fuzzy model for support to decision making and management in MP. Following the example of the monitoring-management system of the æRudnikÆ mine flotation plant, fuzzy logic implementation was shown. The key conclusions of the paper are that fuzzyfication of layers of the decision making and management model has full justification due to the complexity and dynamics of mineral processing processes, complications and often insurmountable difficulties concerning the precise description of real systems by conventional mathematical tools, variability of external influences, and the (general) non-linearity of the MP processes management criteria functions.

"Suboptimal performance of clusters of hydrocyclones (cyclones), relative to the performance of the individual cyclones that comprise the cluster, is a common phenomenon. The primary cause is well known: uneven distribution of the slurry feed into the individual cyclones. The direct result of uneven distribution is that each cyclone in a cluster performs somewhat differently. Hence, some, if not all, of them do not work at their intended operating points, and the classification is not as sharp as intended. The impact on grade, recovery and milling efficiency will vary depending on the duty of the processing circuit, but the most immediately apparent consequence of uneven distribution is a difference in wear rates in the individual cyclones; this exacerbates the problems of unequal performance of the individual cyclones. In severe cases, and as differential wear proceeds, flows from the individual cyclones may become visibly different. Uneven distribution, once the phenomenon was identified, was seen to be a significant issue in the high-solids hydrocyclone cluster in the ball mill recycle section of Evolution Mining’s Edna May Operation (EMO, Westonia, Western Australia) gold processing plant. In 2012, a FloCEP® hydrocyclone feed distributor system was installed to alleviate the problem. Over the next four years of operation, this innovation has proven its value in the metallurgical and maintenance areas. Individual cyclones now wear at the same rate, greatly reducing the need for operator intervention, as well as increasing overall plant availability through minimising unplanned maintenance. The costs of the installation can be justified by savings in maintenance alone, though the greatest value, as is described in this paper, is in allowing the plant to produce consistently closer to its operational design limits. The FloCEP® system is a low maintenance, readily installed retrofit, based on two patented devices that are combined with complementary proprietary design methodology allowing customisation for specific flow rates and slurry particle properties. The Beaconsfield Gold Mine within the township of Beaconsfield in northern Tasmania has been established in recent years to exploit a known resource in the Tasmania Reef which was mined to a depth of 450 m below surface between 1877 and 1914 yielding 850 000 ounces of gold. Activity at Beaconsfield over the past 30 years has involved drilling to assess the resource and rehabilitation of the top 100 m of the Hart Shaft that had collapsed since the original closure. More recently the mine has been dewatered to the 375 m Level and work is well advanced establishing infrastructure aimed at recommencing production during 1998 - 99. This paper reviews geotechnical studies undertaken to-date and provides a brief overview of some practical methods of analysing ground conditions. It pursues simple observation and analysis as a tool for assessing mine design and ground support options without recourse to extensive monitoring and measurement and avoids the use of elaborate models before the basics are understood.

An integral part of the Brisbane Suburban Railway Electrification involved the relining, refurbishment and track lowering in the Roma Street, Brunswick Street and Gloucester Street double track tunnels. The design and the construction procedures had to satisfy the Queensland Railways electrification clearance and track standards and the requirements of maintaining track services through the tunnels during work. Refurbishing of the tunnel linings was carried out to extend the life of the tunnels.

A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in silica-saturated iron silicate slags under controlled oxygen partial pressures at 1200 and 1250¦C. Molten copper containing each of the above elements was kept in contact with a slag in a silica crucible for 24 or 48 hours to attain equilibrium. No me- chanical entrapment of metal into the slag was observed. The appearance of the magnetite phase in the slag was avoided by holding oxygen potentials at substantially lower values than that evaluated from available data on iron silicate slags. Solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in slags were plotted against oxy- gen potentials and both oxidic and atomic types of dissolution were found, except in the case of arsenic, from the dependencies of the solubili- ties on the oxygen potential and from positive intercepts of regression lines when extra- polated to zero oxygen potential. The dissolu- tion of arsenic seemed mostly oxidic. Distri- bution coefficients of arseò,ic, antimony and bismuth between copper and slag are also Discussed.

"This paper presents preliminary results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales Australia (UNSW) into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that rock mass strength can be determined following the geological strength-index (GSI) approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions: construction dates from 1880s to 2006 spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m depths from 17 to 124 m excavation methods of drill and blast, roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM).Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the principal stresses that were present at the time of the failures. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zones. Failure and stable points are then compared to the proposed strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown and the spalling criteria. The ability of the Hoek-Brown rock mass strength criterion to differentiate between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones is considered to be remarkable.CITATION:Bertuzzi, R, 2014. Saxonvale mine is a multi bench open pit coal mine developed to its Stage I capacity of 1.75 Mt/y of run of mine coal. Detailed engineering studies for the mine commenced in April 1980, approval to proceed with the development was received in July 1980 and first coal shipments were made in April 1982. The engineering and project management of the mine development was carried out by BHP Engineering. This paper outlines the design and site administration for the development and describes both the organisation structure and the control and administration procedures used by BHP Engineering to ensure that the project was Successful.

Caving is the lowest cost underground mining method, provided that drawpoint spacing, drawpoint size and ore handling facilities are designed to suit the caved material and that the drawpoint horizon can be maintained for the draw life. In the near future several open pit mines that produce in excess of 50 000 tons per day will have to examine the feasibility of converting to low cost, large scale underground operations. Several other large scale, low grade underground operations will experience major changes in their mining environments as large dropdowns are implemented. These changes demand a more realistic approach to mine planning than has occurred in the past, where existing operations have been projected to increased depths with little consideration of the change in mining environment that will occur. As economics force the consideration of underground mining of large, competent orebodies by low cost methods, the role of cave mining will have to be defined. In the past caving has generally been considered for rock masses that cave and fragment readily. The ability to define cavability and fragmentation, the availability of large, robust LHDs, a better understanding of draw control requirements, improved drilling equipment for secondary blasting and reliable cost data have shown that competent orebodies with coarse fragmentation can be exploited by cave mining at a much lower cost than with drill and blast Methods.

The problem of automatic control of a coal mine ventilation network is discussed. It is found that the structure of the control sys-tem should have two levels, i.e. local regulation of ventilation para-meters (air flows) in faces to eliminate the effect of quick disturba-noes, and supervisory control of the whole ventilation process by pe-riodical modifications to the working characteristics of the main fans. Practical and theoretical problems connected with implementation of the system in Polish mining are listed and discussed. To solve these prob-lems a series of experiments with air flow control in three different coal faces were carried-out with the aim of checking the measuring and control equipment in a real mine conditions as well as investigatingthe gasodynamics of the ventilation process. The results of the experi-ments are analysdd, and used to verify the mathematical model of the gasodynamics of a longwall face.

The current practice of magnetite ore agglomeration involves high temperature oxidation roasting (typically at 1200–1350°C) of magnetite to hematite phase in order to improve the strength and reducibility of pellets. The requirement to pre-oxidise the magnetite before introduction to an ironmaking plant increases the CO2 emissions generated during the ironmaking process. In our previous papers, a novel, alternative agglomeration route for magnetite ores was presented where magnetite was converted to a reducible CaFe3O5 (CWF) phase through the addition of lime to produce a Lime-Magnetite Pellet (LMP) feedstock that can be directly charged to ironmaking units. The LMP process eliminates the magnetite oxidation stage, thereby reducing the CO2 emission during ironmaking. The concept was tested by thermodynamic calculations, high temperature experiments and scaled-down pilot scale test work. In this paper, larger scale synthesis of halfstoichiometric LMPs (1 mole of Fe3O4 and ½ mole of CaCO3) were prepared using a balling drum, followed by overnight drying at 110°C and induration at 1050°C for two hours. The LMPs were analysed using X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope techniques for phase and microstructure characterisation. The LMPs were found to have 14–15 wt. per cent of CWF phase when indurated under a CO2/CO ratio of 8.5:1. Pilot scale testing of the LMPs was conducted following ISO standard test procedures. The test results indicated the LMP’s had a Reducibility Index (RI) of over 91 per cent, a Tumbler Index (TI) of 87 per cent and a Reduction Degradation Index (RDI) of 4.6 per cent. The results indicate LMPs may be useful as an alternative feedstock to ironmaking processes that would result in lower overall CO2 emissions.

This paper outlines a laboratory-based design method, founded in critical state soil mechanics, for identification of an appropriate compaction specification to ensure dilative conditions prevail across the design TSF stress range. The method makes use of the critical state line (CSL) and consolidation tests prepared at varying compactive efforts. The CSL and consolidation curves are plotted together in e-log p’ space, with the compaction curves transformed from vertical effective stress to mean effective stress using the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0). Consideration is given to the sensitivity of K0 as it is generally not available during the design phase. An example of the design method is illustrated with laboratory data.

A thick sequence of alkaline intrusions and volcanic rocks underlies a Quaternary caldera on Liliir Island. The sequence is host to a still active sub-aerial hydrothermal system and associated epithermal gold mineralisation. Sub-horizontal alteration horizons exhibit progressively increasing chondrite norma-lised (La/Lu) en and (La/Sm) cn ratios from unaltered shoshonites, to the potassic alteration zone, to the argillic altera-tion zone to the advanced argillic alte-ration zone. The increasing fractionation of HEE, and especially of LHEE, up the alteration sequence is the result of de-creasing pH, temperature and alkalinity of the hydrothermal fluids with increa-sing alteration intensity. HRE3 were especially mobile in argillic and advanced argillic alteration units characterised by acid fluid conditions and large fluid volumes. Abundant Cl, S and CO2 within the hydrothermal fluids and thus abundant REE complexing agents and large fluid volumes favoured the mobility of REE during hydro-thermal alteration of the volcanic rocks and intrusions. Steam escape, mixing of the gases with groundwater and a change from a magmatic neutral chloride hydro-thermal system to a meteoric acid sulphate system was accompanied by liquid/vapour ratio changes, pronounced alkalinity, pH and temperature decreases, and fluid/rock ratio increases. This caused the mobili-sation, fractionation and deposition of PF.F.

The four-dimensional (4D) network relaxation method, originally developed by Akaike in 1999, uses Lagrange relaxation and is known for its ability to include the price change and possible better outputs, but the computation time is huge. However, the continuous advancement in computer technologies allows the use of higher-speed computers with more memory capacity. Therefore, in this paper the authors have tried to implement the method with adjustments and improvements in its algorithm to suit the current computing system. As a result, the computation time has been drastically reduced and more constraints can be included, which makes the scheduling a more realistic one. The case study of an open pit gold mine with 129 500 blocks can be solved considering the capacity constraints in 71 seconds. In previous case studies, the mined ore had to be processed or disposed of immediately. Now, stockpiling can be included as another option. Since the details of the algorithm are still being improved, the computation time is a little longer than the previous cases without the stockpiling option. However, it is found that scheduling with the stockpiling option is possible in a reasonable time. In conclusion, the 4D network relaxation method has become more useful with advances in computer technologies and provides better results.

A study was conducted to examine how pretreatment of carbon-bearing gold ores with chlorine enhances gold recovery by cyanidation. It is hypothesized that metal species (including iron and copper) dissolved during chlorination adsorb on the carbon surface hindering the adsorption of dissolved gold. To test the hypothesis, samples of several sulfide minerals were subjected to reaction with sparged chlorine gas to determine which, if any, dissolve faster than gold under these conditions. Then, a synthetic carbonaceous refractory gold ore containing pyrite, chalcocite, activated carbon, and gold was subjected to gas sparging. The results of these experiments showed that chalcocite and arsenopyrite dissolve so that metal (copper and iron) is put into solution slightly faster than gold under the same chlorination conditions. Also, it was observed from the experiments that gold adsorbs on activated carbon during chlorination, but is replaced by copper and iron as the chlorination process dissolves more of the chalcocite and pyrite. The study concluded by investigating ferric chloride addition prior to chlorination to hinder gold adsorption on activated carbon.

There are two main areas of application of geology in quarrying: (i) In regional planning for industrial mineral requirements.(ii) In direct quarry management. The regional planning requirement has recently become more evident because of greatly increased land demand conflicts around cities. The direct quarry involvement is a reflection of both the economy and the greatly increased sophistication of the quarry industry. Here, professional planning and development expertise by a geologist is required, to ensure continued supply of raw materials at the best price to the consumer with sufficient profit to the producer. Today, geological insurance safeguards capital investment in plant and assures economical development plans.

Scrutiny of the whole explosives industry has increased as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 and the bombings in Indonesia, including the Bali bombings last year. This has been highlighted in specific press releases from governing bodies, like the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources û Western Australia, on the necessity of being in compliance with regulations for storage of explosives. As a result, audits by inspectors to assess compliance are to be expected. In a proactive move, DynoConsult has assisted several customers through benchmarking current practices, in order to identify any areas of non-compliance to the statutory requirements for explosive storage and security. This paper discusses the outcomes of supplier discussions and customer audits and highlights the implications for the industry.
