The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. At present, the friction factor is calculated by measuring pressure drop and airway configurations. However, the workload of on-site measurement is heavy, and the measurement results are easily disturbed by the external environment. In order to meet the need of intelligent ventilation to quickly and accurately obtain the friction resistance of roadway. Based on the important of roughness in Atkinson friction resistance formula, in this paper, fractal theory is used to characterise the 3D rough surface, and a method based on fractal dimension to describe the roughness of roadway surface and calculate the friction resistance was proposed. A computational model of friction resistance for fractal characterisation of roadway 3D rough surface was established. The parameters of the model were deduced and verified by using Nikuradse experimental data. The fractal dimension of roadway surface was calculated by 3D laser scanning data of Kailuan roadway, the established friction resistance calculation method was compared with the field resistance measurement results. It is considered that the calculation method of friction resistance based on fractal theory is reliable and can well represent the influence of 3D rough surface characteristics of roadway. The result show that the new established friction resistance formula compared with the traditional Atkinson formula in Nikuradse experimental, the average relative error is 6.874 per cent, and compared with the measured results of ventilation resistance in Kailuan experimental roadway, the relative error is 6.667 per cent. Comprehensive evaluation and analysis suggest that the new formula can well reflect the influence of 3D rough surface on friction resistance, combined with 3D laser scanning technology, the friction resistance of roadway can be calculated quickly and accurately. This research provided a reference for the key technology and theoretical development of intelligent ventilation parameter measurement.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore initiated a program in January 1995 at the Mt Whaleback operation in Newman, Western Australia to develop a closure plan for the overburden storage areas (OSA), which have the potential to generate acid rock drainage. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of OSAs with respect to slope stability, surface run-off, erosion, water infiltration and vegetation. The objective is to control acid rock drainage by preventing moisture movement into and through the OSA material. Infiltration to the underlying OSA material and closure costs are minimised due to the presence of the run-of-mine (ROM) cover material. A summary of the field data is presented to illustrate low percolation rates to the underlying OSA and key performance characteristics of the moisture store and release cover system design. Field data collected to date demonstrates that a moisture store and release cover system constructed with suitable ROM material has good potential as a final cover system at the Mt Whaleback site. The performance of the cover system on a sloped surface was significantly different as compared to placing the cover system on a horizontal surface.

The Vanyukov Process is a high-intensity smelting system that has been proven over the last 20 years for various metallurgical operations including the smelting of copper, nickel, copper-zinc, antimony concentrates, municipal waste treatment and pig-iron production. Extensive pilot plant tests on copper and copper-nickel concentrates have provided information for the design of the commercial furnaces. The thermodynamic analysis, design idea and the data obtained from commercial furnaces have shown that Vanyukov Process would be the best choice to smelt copper-nickel and nickel sulphide concentrates as well as oxide nickel ores.

Sixty years after its inception, after an alternation of periods of admiration and rejection by the industry, Sampling Theory can now be seen as going through its golden age. A brief history of its successive transformations and progresses achieved by its author, Pierre Gy, and his followers, reveals the theoretical as well as practical difficulties that had to be vanquished to reach this point. Its current level of acceptance and corresponding trends are discussed and illustrated, with an insight on its increasing real role in the industry and future prospects for its further development.

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of an ongoing three-year government- and industry-funded research program. In order to assess the feasibility of various bio-remediation strategies, field-scale manipulations were conducted using enclosed mesocosms (limnocorrals). Two manipulation strategies were tested: addition of algal nutrients (phosphate and nitrate) to Main Zone Pit surface waters; and addition of algal nutrients (surface waters) and dissolved organic carbon (deep waters) to the Waterline Pit. Nutrient addition was conducted in order to stimulate algal production and enhance metal scavenging by biogenic particles, while dissolved organic carbon (ethanol) was added to increase oxygen demand and foster the development of sulfate reduction in pit bottom waters. Fertilisation resulted in rapid growth of natural phytoplankton populations in the surface waters of both pits. In the Main Zone Pit, the stimulation of algal growth resulted in the pronounced removal of both dissolved and total metals (Zn and Cu) from surface waters, with higher rates of metal removal being observed at higher nutrient additions. Metal removal could be attributed to the scavenging of dissolved metals by biogenic particles and subsequent particle settling. A similar pattern of removal from surface waters was observed in Waterline Pit (Zn and Cd). The addition of ethanol to deep waters in Waterline Pit was effective in promoting sulfate reduction in the lower layer. The development of reducing conditions resulted in near-quantitative removal of dissolved Zn and Cd, presumably as secondary metal sulfides. Iron, As and Ni profiles in Waterline Pit exhibited no evidence of removal from either surface waters or bottom waters. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the passive forms of bioremediation tested in these pit lakes may be effective for whole pit-lake remediation.

Oxygen and carbon isotope mapping of hydrothermally altered wall rocks was applied to the blind ore prospecting of skam Pb-Zn deposits in the Kamioka mining district, central Japan, where the wall rocks consist of heterogeneous rock units. The results (8180sMow of -1.1 to +17.3%o and 613CPDB of -5.0 to +4.8%o for limestones, and 8180SMOW of -0.8 to +12.5%c for silicate rocks) show isotope zonations of the wall rocks with depletions in heavy isotopes (180 and 13C) toward the center of mineralization. The isotope zonations likely formed by interaction of migrating thermal waters with the wall rocks during the mineralization. The heavy-isotope depleted zone, which indicates higher temperature or higher water-to- rock ratio of the system, occurs in the footwall of a fault, indicating that the fault played the role of main conduit of the ore-forming fluids. A heavy-isotope depleted zone was also found in an area, where significant mineralization had yet to be identified. Recent drilling in this area has intercepted a zone with a grade of 16.0% Zn, 0.8% Pb, and 35g Ag per metric tonne at a depth of about 360m.

The Vickery Coal Mine commenced open cut mining operations in May 1991. All overburden and interburden is drilled and blasted for excavation by dragline or hydraulic excavator. The mode of operation adopted from the feasibility studies requires that throw blasting of the overburden be used to assist dragline productivity.This paper reviews the development of the drilling and blasting practices with particular emphasis on the throw blasting of the overburden and optimisation of costs. This review includes analysis of the pre-production drilling and blasting feasibility studies by comparison with actual results.

Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. Coal mining has been occurring on the Stockton Plateau for over 100 years. As a result of both natural conditions and mining activities, surface water on the plateau is known to have low pH and elevated metals concentrations, a condition known as acid rock drainage (ARD). Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ), as owners of the current mining operations at Stockton desire to understand the nature and causes of ARD at Stockton to determine whether commercially viable options can be developed to improve the water quality to levels acceptable to the local community and regulators. A series of integrated water quality investigations have been performed towards developing a characterisation of the water quality on the Stockton Plateau and receiving waters. The investigations performed include: design and implementation of a water quality monitoring program to collect a satisfactory base of water quality data from which to develop an understanding of the water quality and its variability, and to collect data regarding the range of flow rates that occur in the principal streams; development of a hydrological model for the Plateau with the ability to predict flow rates at key locations on the plateau and on the Ngakawau River; field investigations of the bio-diversity of the plateau and surrounding areas, to develop a snapshot of the health of aquatic communities and whether streams draining mine workings are æadversely impactedÆ; eco-toxicology; waste dump seepage water quality monitoring at selected basal springs, drilling, investigations and permeability and geochemical testing; data processing of a range of historical data and the newly acquired data for the development of empirical relationships that describe the water chemistry system and its relationship in turn to flow rates in the streams; simulation of the long term water quality record for the measured parameters (pH, acidity and metals concentrations), based on the hydrological model and the empirical relationships developed from the new database; and preliminary development and examination of mitigation options for the ARD issues at the mine. The study has progressed towards design of pilot studies of options for mitigation of the generation of the ARD as well as treatment of the discharges. It is the integrated approach adopted by SENZ from an early time in the investigations, that has enabled fast-tracking of the pilot engineering trials. This paper presents the results of the field investigations and eco-toxicology studies and demonstrates the value of predictive modelling of water quality in the study area, even at a very early stage in the remedial engineering design process.

The collapse of the I.T.C., the subsequent fall in the price of Tin, and the lifting of quotas saw the Renison concentrator resuming full seven- day operations at maximum capacity in 1985/86. Performance was sus- tained in terms of grade and recovery, and in some areas improved, over this period. A further challenge was declining head grades, and the need to treat higher proportions of less amenable ore types. The complexity of the flowsheet and the method of mining and ore handling predisposes the process to unstable operation, and solving this problem comprises a major component of the current development effort. The concentrator has an imbalance of capacity between processes, and excess in some areas is being adapted to enhance the capacity of others. Magnetic susceptibility of various minerals is being exploited to greater effect. Significant performance gains are achievable by improving exist- ing unit process efficiency, particularly in grinding, gravity processes and Cassiterite Flotation. This paper reviews the metallurgical developments, both recently implemented and planned for this year, which have contributed to main- taining Renison Limited in a competitive position in the post I.T.C. Tin industry.

"Geometallurgy is now recognised within the mining industry as an approach that can both maximise value and reduce the risks associated with resource development. The process of spatial ore variability testing for metallurgical response and the use of quick, inexpensive metallurgical proxies has been well developed in the past decade in industry and the literature, and via various collaborative research programs and laboratories. Technology continues to advance with new techniques such as hand-held analytical tools and automated hyperspectral core scanning, allowing for even faster, less expensive in situ geometallurgical testing.In the current mining industry downturn, a critical frontier of geometallurgy is in its application in short-term geological modelling (ore control) and mine planning, and the associated decision-making. This is the end game at which the hard-won knowledge of orebody variability can be exploited to add near-term value. In order for spatial block models to be fit-for-purpose for such tactical uses, they must be populated with key geometallurgical information and then have workflows that use this richer model as a basis of material allocation to destinations so that the true value of the resource is realised.We envision geometallurgy (geomet) programs designed to add and sustain value at two levels:‘Strategic geomet’ has a long-term strategic focus that actively uses all relevant data that helps predict processing performance such as bench-scale metallurgical tests, mineralogy, geochemistry, ore texture etc (‘the geometallurgical database’) to model spatial ore variability and metallurgical response throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). This will enable better resource definition, more optimal mine planning and scheduling, improved process design and sustaining capital strategy over the LOM. The value-realisation is gained by basing all these strategic decisions on spatial models that better reflect the actual value of blocks (or aggregates of blocks) in the model.‘Tactical geomet’ has a short- to medium-term tactical focus that, again, actively uses the geometallurgical database, but also includes new data derived during ore control activities (such as drilling and sampling) to inform allocation-to-destination decisions via the ore control process. This will enable improved efficiency (ie less error) in allocation of mining blocks as direct feed, stockpile or waste. Importantly, this efficiency will be measured in terms of value and not grade, which is an incomplete – and typically biased – proxy for value. The key benefit is that ore control will then be planned and executed on the basis of realised value.We therefore propose a twofold systematic and holistic, value-based geometallurgical process. This process needs to be planned and implemented in an integrated manner, noting that strategic and tactical geometallurgy can be worked on by the same professionals, sharing data, methodologies and potentially models. As open pit mining of a deposit deepens, the cost of extraction may increase up to a threshold where transitioning to mining through underground methods is more profitable. This paper provides an approach to identifying an optimal depth at which a mine should transition from open pit to underground mining. The value of a set of candidate transition depths is investigated by optimising the production schedules for each depth’s unique open pit and underground operations. By considering the sum of the open pit and underground mining portions’ value along with the cost of transitioning corresponding to each candidate transition depth, the optimal transition depth can be identified. The optimisation model presented is based on a stochastic integer program that integrates geological uncertainty. As an input, the stochastic integer program utilises a set of several stochastic simulations that represent equally probable scenarios of the mineral resource. This group of simulations describes the uncertainty in the deposit, while the optimiser aims to maximise value based on discounted profits of both the open pit and underground components of the deposit.CITATION:MacNeil, J and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives. Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring? It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.

Even though flotation is one of the most important unit operations of mineral processing, accurate modelling of this process for plant performance prediction has remained elusive. In the last four to five years dramatic changes have occurred in our ability to make credible model based predictions. This paper briefly traces the history of flotation modelling from simple (lumped pulp-froth) æchemical kinetic analogueÆ models for single cells to more detailed multi-phase, multi-component population balance models for banks of cells. It then focuses on recent developments in physics-based modelling tools. This includes current efforts to model the forces of attachment and detachment at the individual event level as well as multi-event levels in individual cells and circuits. Two examples of these tools are presented. The first is DEM modelling of the mechanics of motion of bubbles in froths. The second is population balance modelling of the dynamics of flotation circuits describing how they are influenced by upstream processes (such as crushing and grinding) as well as internal process variables (such as aeration, agitation and reagent addition). Applications of each of these tools are discussed.

With the advent of increased environmental regulation and high penalties for non-compliance in many countries, there has grown a need for all industries to assess their risk with respect to environmental compliance and consequently develop management systems which ensure environmental compliance and sound environmental practice. The need to better assess and manage environmental risk has developed rapidly as legal and financial penalties have increased for inappropriate management of the environment. The mechanism that industry has developed to manage risk is through the use of environmental management systems. These environmental management systems are generally based on the principles of total quality management. For example the British Standard BS7750 (Specification for Environmental Management System) shares common management system principles with ISO 9000 quality management systems. The same trends of increased environmental regulation and higher penalties for environmental impairment are now evident in Australia where environmental management systems are now being introduced. With increased penalties for environmental impairment and greater responsibility of managers and directors, environmental management systems are likely to become even more common in Australia. This paper describes some of the influences directing environmental management within the Australian industrial and mining environment, describes the elements of an environmental management system and relates these to the mining industry.

Rapid access longwall mining' or 'longwail punch mining' is a proposed extraction method whereby longwall gate roads are driven into a seam directly from an opencut highwall. The longwall panel thus formed is retreated back to within 40 m of the highwall providing an extremely simple, reliable and therefore highly productive longwall mining system. The concept is of particular benefit for the recovery of isolated pockets of coal (adjacent to a highwall) not easily accessible from a conventional underground mine. As panel gate roads are driven directly from the open strip, minimal delays are incurred between the end of open cut and start of underground production, allowing the method to bridge the gap between open cut mining and a total underground commitment. The study was specific to the Bowen Basin, and given the likely conditions, no significant operational or geotechnical hinderances to the concept could be identified. It was therefore concluded that longwall punch mining would not expose the operator to any additional risks above that normally associated with the introduction of longwall mining. Thus, longwall punch mining is an attractive option, both operationally and financially, for open cut mines reaching their maximum economic Death.

This paper describes the effects of physical variables in dewatering of mineral slurries with air as the filtrate displacing medium. Using a mathematical model with material related constants measured in laboratory dewatering curves are simulated for vacuum and pressure filtration. Four different mineral slurries are studied. Basic dewatering curves with variation in air-pressure are shown with iso-energy lines. Variables such as air pressure, feed concentration, cake thickness and cake formation pressure are discussed.
