Research and development into alternate gold and precious metals adsorbents has resulted in the development of a new technology named the AUROSAVE adsorption process (ARGOSAVE'" for high silver con- tent ores). Adsorbents called VITROKELE'" can be tailored for either Gold I (cyanide leach) or Gold III (halide leach) applications. VITROKELE consists of a chemically synthetic adsorbent carried on an inert substrate, often a polystyrene bead. It is suitable for both in- pulp and in-solution use. VITROKELE adsorbent offers certain advan- tages over both carbon and ion exchange resin adsorbents. This paper describes testwork on Australian ores and commercial solu- tions obtained from operating Australian plants demonstrating the kinetic loading characteristics, elution methods and other operating parameters of VITROKELE adsorbent in the cyanide system. Brief reference is made to VITROKELE in the Gold III system.

Geostatistical simulation techniques are used to quantify uncertainty of spatial attributes of interest describing mineral deposits, petroleum reservoirs, hydrogeological horizons, environmental contaminants and so on. The majority of existing methods consider second-order spatial statistics and Gaussian processes, while the more advanced multiple point-based simulation approaches are algorithmic and do not consistently account for the high-order spatial relations in data. Recently, simulation techniques for complex and non-Gaussian spatially distributed variables have been developed, based on high-order spatial cumulants, and make no assumptions on data distribution or require data transformations. In this paper, the previous developments are extended and a new approach for the joint simulation of multiple correlated variables using high-order spatial statistics is proposed. The technique is based on a new algorithm for the decorrelation of correlated variables into factors, using the so-termed diagonal domination condition of high-order cumulants. The decorrelated factors are then simulated using high-order simulation and back-transformed into the initial correlated variables. The decorrelation using diagonal domination of high-order statistics is tested with a data set from a multielement iron ore deposit, and then a fully known two-dimensional data set with two correlated variables is used to demonstrate the practical intricacies of the proposed method.CITATION:Minniakhmetov, I and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Precious metal mineralization at the North Arm goldfield in SE Queensland occurs in the Triassic North Arm Volcanics, a sequence of andesite to rhyolite, pyroclastic and epi- clastic rocks deposited in a continental envir- onment. This unit displays a well-defined fracture system on Landsat imagery, including several arcuate structures which may represent former calderas. Two of the latter are associ- ated with zones of hydrothermal alteration, breccias and anomalous precious and volatile metal values. At the North Arm prospect, alter- ation is zoned from outer propylitic into exten- sive sericitic, although K-feldspar alteration is prevalent in the rhyolite. A zone of advanced argillic alteration is also present at Mt. Ninderry, SSE of North Arm. Alteration involves depletion of Na, Ca and Sr, and vari- able enrichment of S, As, Au, Ag, Hg and Mo. K and Rb are strongly enriched in K-feldspar altered zones. Precious metal mineralization occurs in veins, stockworks and hydrothermal breccia zones, and pervasive low grade Au-Ag dispersion is found throughout the sericitic and K-feldspar altered rocks. Veins and brec- cia interstices contain abundant quartz (common- ly banded), minor pyrite, calcite and sericite, with traces of silver grading to electrum, frei- bergite, naumannite, allargentum, marcasite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics are consistent with that found at volcanic-hosted epithermal precious metal deposits, particularly with the low-sulphur/adularia-sericite type.

During the past three years there have been several parties prospecting for oil in the Stat6 of Queensland, and It was: gratifying to read the newspaper headlines last Christmasabout the discovery of oil in the Moohie Nol Well. This discovery was not only a welcome Christmas present for Australia but marked up another success for the seismicmethod in exploration for oil.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the operationaI aspects of seismic work in Queensland with-emphasis on shot-haledrilling. The paper is based upon the experience of one particular seismic survey which began in December of - 1959 and is still inoperation. This survey is being conducted by the Petty Geophysical Engineering - Company of San Antonios, Texas, and the Queensland area involved is in the general vicinity of Quilpie, Dlackall and Charleville.

Within the Mt Whaleback open cut mine the integrity of the final pit wall is achieved through careful rock slope design, use of rock reinforecement technology where marginal stability exists and use of controlled blasting techniques and excavation practices. By reducing the effective density of ANFO explosive within blastholes to around 0.2 glcm', and developing standard blast pattern designs for various rock types, blast damage to pit walls has been minimised. Accurate geological prediction is necessary for optimum blast design. Controlled blasting is undertaken where blasting occurs within 90 m of the designed final batter crest and hole by hole assessment of final limit blast patterns is undertaken before pattern charging. Shovels and trucks remove the bulk of blasted and dozed rock material, but due to the mine's variable pit wall slope configuration, bulldozer excavation of some critical design batters has been successfully Implemented.

The increasing market requirements regarding the quality of products, the enhanced predictability from detailed mine planning, the need for process consolidation and upgrading require continuous investigation on the characteristics of different ore types to be concentrated. This paper addresses the mineralogical and technological characterisation of several itabirite iron ore types and the influence of the composition and mineralogical associations on desliming and flotation. Pellet feed quality and the influence on the major performance indicators, such as weight recovery of slimes, selectivity index, metallurgical recovery, flotation kinetics of iron minerals and gangue is also emphasised. The investigation resulted in a classification of iron ores according to their mineralogical composition, morphology of the crystals, and/or texture and microstructure of mineral particles with respect to desliming and flotation performances.

"The Gosowong Gold Project is owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM), an Indonesian company 75 per cent owned by Newcrest. It is located on Halmahera Island, in the North Maluku Province of the Republic of Indonesia, approximately 2450 km north-east of the national capital, Jakarta (Newcrest, 2017).Kencana is one of two underground gold and silver mines at the Gosowong Operation where ground conditions vary from competent to very poor. Development headings occurring in poor rock mass conditions require high capacity ground support including long tendon cable bolts. Manual installation of cable bolts in these development headings has been a time consuming process due to borehole collapse, blockages requiring subsequent re-drilling and a minimum eight hour grout curing time interval. The installation of cable bolts including the setting, plating and tensioning can impact the critical path for development heading advance resulting in development cycle delays.A review was conducted by PT NHM on current industry practices for alternatives to manual cable bolting. PT NHM subsequently approached Minova to assist with the development and trialling of self drilling anchors (SDAs) installed using jumbos with a rapid setting pumpable resin, CARBOTHIXTM. A series of system development trials were conducted and a reliable bolting system was developed utilising the existing jumbo drilling fleet with minimal required modifications.The system developed was a ‘one pass’ bolting process to install and grout SDAs using a two component resin with a remote, mechanised system. Improvements achieved from the system include: eliminating hole closure issues and more immediate support in poor rock mass effectively reducing personnel exposure to poor ground conditions by removing the requirement to access the drive backs reducing grout set time with full installation times for 6 m SDAs averaging 25 min.The resin grouting system has now been successfully implemented to effectively manage areas of poor ground conditions and to accelerate advance rates in high priority headings.CITATION:Pateman, D and Sprague, T, 2017. Current models for the origin of banded iron-formation (BIF) derived in situ iron ore deposits assume that the typical chert and iron oxide banded BIF is the primary rock from which enriched iron ore deposits arise by the selective leaching of quartz and the residual accumulation of the iron oxides. Weathering extends to the base of all the hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province, which lie within the saprolitic weathering zone, as shown by the preservation of the primary textures, and are overlain by a hydrated goethite zone representing the solum. Since groundwater typically contains dissolved silica, derived from the hydrolysis of silicate minerals, greatly in excess of the saturation solubility of quartz, it is incapable of removing quartz from below the watertable, and quartz is preserved in all saprolites derived from quartz bearing rocks. Quartz may be dissolved in the solum due to the influx of meteoric water having little or no dissolved silica, but soil-forming processes that dissolve quartz likewise alter the oxides by hydration and transposition with consequent destruction of primary textures, and there is no suggestion of soil-forming processes having produced the deposits, which typically extend to considerable depths below the water-table. A characteristic feature of the typical hematite orebodies is the unaltered nature of the iron oxides in the ore compared to those in the adjacent cherty BIF. Although the solubility of ferric iron at >10 ppb is much less than quartz, any process capable of dissolving the huge volume of quartz must also affect the iron oxides, but evidence of this is completely lacking in most ore deposits. Hydrothermal alteration at Koolyanobbing in the Southern Cross Province affects both cherty BIF and ore, and clearly shows equal mobilisation and recrystallisation of hematite within quartz/hematite veins and in the surrounding cherty BIF, which shows no evidence for the selective leaching of quartz. Similarly, any metamorphic process capable of removing all quartz from BIF would leave characteristic evidence in the remaining oxides. However, a hydrothermal process may account for at least portions of certain ore deposits, in which the chert bands have been replaced by carbonates at comparatively low temperatures, to produce a quartz-free magnetite/ carbonate rock that is readily upgraded to high-grade ore by supergene dissolution of the carbonates. This process is interpreted to have formed high grade ore at Mt Gibson, Koolyanobbing æAÆ Deposit and Mt Tom Price North Deposit. In addition to carbonate replaced cherty BIF at Mt Gibson in the Murchison Province, there are extensive sequences of magnetite BIF without chert bands, and this chert-free facies of BIF is interpreted as the precursor to the majority of in situ hematite ore deposits, through oxidation and weathering of magnetite and iron silicate and carbonate minerals. The world-class martite/microplaty-hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province are a special case of BIF-derived iron ore deposits that were initiated during the Proterozoic era. Evidence from overlying Wyloo Group conglomeratic horizons containing clasts of Hamersley Group BIF indicates that microplaty-hematite formed within the clasts before deposition, and that Proterozoic subaerial oxidation and weathering of uplifted Hamersley Group formations produced the microplaty-hematite in both chert-free and cherty BIF.

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.Recent increases in prices for iron ore, together with the potential to produce high iron and low contaminant concentrates, have resulted in a renewed interest in recovering magnetite from banded iron formation and other deposits.Geometallurgical evaluation of magnetite involves approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation that are different from the methods commonly used for haematite iron ore. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.The sampling protocol will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a bench-scale test that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents, or may be estimated directly. For estimation of the concentrate grades, a weighting can be applied to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries from each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.This paper presents an overview of the use of metallurgical test data in resource evaluation for magnetite deposits.

In a tailings storage facility, the chemistry of pore water is a function of oxidation and dissolution of sulfide minerals, containing metals and metalloids, the neutralising effect of gangue minerals and the geochemical processes controlling solute equilibria such as pH, redox potential, precipitation, ion exchange and adsorption. On the other hand, the changes in geochemical composition of tailings feed over time is a function of spatial variability within the orebody and modifications in processing method. Tailings properties such as pyrite content, pH, concentration of deleterious elements, surface chemistry, pore water chemistry and particle size are already shaped in the dynamic environment of a process plant.To engineer desired environmental outcomes, a new research framework is needed. The new approach should follow the physical and geochemical processes of tailings feed and construct models that can be used for the prediction of seepage water quality and dust propagation and evaluate the potential re-processing of tailings or production of tailings with desirable surface chemistry, particle size and internal structure. The challenge of developing tailings engineering model is not in laboratory techniques, but more of the overall communication of results and establishing the link between disciplines. It requires investigating geochemistry across mining and processing for improved environmental outcomes at tailings storage facilities.The paper reviews the current tailings management practices by comparing the geochemistry and mineralogy of tailings and the chemistry of seepage water from three Australian case studies in the context of geology, mineral processing and climate. Sintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blast furnace use. Due to the depleting reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, there have been considerable changes in iron ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia. Corresponding to the changes in the availability of iron ore resources, the amount of impurities in iron ore has been slowly increasing. Some of these impurities have been found to have deleterious impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. In the meantime, an increasing number of large blast furnaces with inner volumes of more than 5000 m3 have been built that require more sinter and are often more demanding in terms of the quality requirements of the ferrous materials. Finally, sinter plants are facing increasing pressure due to more stringent regulations regarding their environmental impact. One of the key aspects to develop sustainable metallurgical production is to ensure that the predictive power of thermodynamic tools is brought up to a new level of accuracy and reliability. Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

The paper is aimed at mining engineers and other mining practitioners in the metalliferous mining industry who are considering the use of roadheaders and wish to understand the basic geomechanical and operational principles controlling their performance. The paper aims to address metalliferous minersÆ general unfamiliarity with roadheader technology, which is one of the factors which has limited the application of these machines in such mines. The historical development of drag tool mechanical excavation machines is briefly discussed, and factors affecting the application of roadheaders are mentioned. The mechanics of cutting with drag tools is then reviewed as are the effects of these and tool wear on tool performance. The implications of tool performance to roadheader performance are mentioned, the potential benefits of high pressure waterjet assistance are discussed and the relative performances of different tool types and materials are compared. Roadheader performance factors including productivity and utilisation are mentioned, and the state-of-the-art of conventional roadheaders is discussed in the context of machine weight, power and cutting head configuration. The influence of these and rock strength on machine productivity is analysed. Alternative, developing technologies are discussed which may extend the effective use of mechanical excavation into stronger rock masses which are beyond the range of conventional roadheaders. Finally, conclusions on these discussions are presented, along with recommendations for continuing research and development.

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

"Falling commodity prices and a rising supply surplus have ushered in a period of restraint in capital project investment across the global mining and metals sector. Competition for capital project funding has seen fewer projects progress through investment gates and a stronger focus on projects that deliver gains in capital productivity and strategic outcomes.Over the course of the 2015 financial year, EY conducted a study of 108 projects in the global mining and metals sector (EY analysis; Larsson and Ericsson, 2014; SNL Financial, 2015). The projects studied were at various life cycle stages and related to the development of copper, iron ore, gold, coal, nickel and other commodities. Each individual project investment exceeded US$1 B, and the studied group represented a cumulative investment value of US$367 B.The research found that the majority of projects were delayed and/or over budget when measured against the initial estimates made during the early stages of the project life cycle. Of the surveyed projects, 69 per cent were identified as facing cost overruns with an average overrun of 62 per cent above the initial estimate and 50 per cent reported schedule delays, even after remedial acceleration initiatives.The analysis found that budget and schedule overruns could be attributed to five key causes:project management factorsstakeholder conflictsresource constraintsregulatory, and policy-related challengesunfavourable external environment.Improving project delivery performance starts with successful planning, followed by rigorous management during delivery. Most iron ores occur in mine benches as complex mixtures of lithologies and ore types. This significantly complicates their characterisation for both blast design and fragmentation modelling. A great deal of technical and research effort has been applied to the development of models to predict fragmentation from rock blasting. A number of quite useful engineering models are currently available to blasting engineers and consultants, and more sophisticated approaches using mechanistic descriptions of rock breakage continue to be developed and applied by researchers and explosives companies.The engineering or empirical models that are in more general use within the industry, such as the Kuz-Ram model, require appropriate data if they are to generate useful fragmentation predictions. Some of these models have reached significant sophistication and have made very useful contributions to both routine blasting operations and the exploration of new blasting paradigms. However, these models struggle to adequately deal with rock that is as complex as iron ore. This paper reviews the characteristics of the most successful blast fragmentation models available to the industry and discusses approaches to the derivation of suitable rock mass properties to adequately describe blast fragmentation in a range of iron ores.CITATION:Scott, A and Onederra, I, 2015. Pinched Sluices, in a variety of guises, are used extensively for the separation of minerals according to density. In the authors' work a pilot-scale sluice has been constructed with provision for splitting the discharge stream into a number of layers. The composition and flowrate of the stream can thus be analysed as a function of depth and the results presented graphically. The effects of such parameters as total flowrate, pulp composition and particle size on overall performance can be clearly seen from such data.

The term "joint venture" lacks any precise legal definition but is typically used to denote a form of legal relationship which is neither a partnership nor a corporation. Nbst joint ventures are contractual relationships which provide for the sharing of mining leases and production facilities and for the sharing of costs, but which enable each joint venturer to carry on his own separate business. The rationale for such relationships is that each participant: retains independent taxation status may independently grant direct security over his interest in the project assets for financing purposes Bankers prefer to lend to incorporated joint ventures (i.e. corporations in which all of the joint venturers are shareholders) but will lend to individual joint venturers provided the joint venture agreement does not imperil their security; i.e. provided there is a "bankable" joint venture. The carpeting objectives of joint venturers and their bankers may be reconciled and unnecessary conflict avoided by the timely inclusion of appropriate provisions in the joint venture agreement before financing negotiations commence.
