The City of KalgoorlieBoulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth, and as the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25 000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operating entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon company).This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.5 million ounces of gold ore with an average head grade of TEN grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden We located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation.

In June 1995, BHP announced that it would build a Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant and associated beneficiation, materials handling and infrastructure facilities at Port Hedland, Western Australia. This plant, the first direct reduction plant in Australia, will convert beneficiated iron ore fines into metallic iron for briquetting into HBI. The reduction plant will be based on the FINMET fluid bed technology jointly developed by Fior de Venezuela and Voest-Alpine Industrienlagenbau. Electric Arc Furnace steelmakers in the Asia Pacific region will be the principal customers for the product. This paper presents an overview of the facilities to be constructed by the project as well as discussing some particular technology and design engineering issues associated with the project.

Embankment dams constructed mainly of sand or non-plastic fine soils are susceptible to liquefaction, particularly in high-rainfall, high-seismicity environments where there is sufficient water to saturate the materials and sufficient energy from an earthquake to cause liquefaction. This paper shows the process adopted to review the stability of an existing cross-valley, centreline-raised cyclone tailings sand embankment dam.The study showed that two-dimensional stability analyses did not sufficiently capture the potential for instability, overestimating the depth of the critical failure surface. Instead, three-dimensional modelling was required to provide a reasonable representation. Post-liquefaction stability analyses carried out using the three-dimensional model indicated an adequate factor of safety (FoS). The FoS under seismic conditions was still considered to be a concern based on pseudostatic analyses (but noting the limitations of the analysis method).Earthquake-induced settlements were estimated using an empirical approach based on case history records (Swaisgood, 2003). The post-earthquake event settlement was estimated to be in the order of 600 mm, which is considered to be acceptable for the embankment, taking account of the proposed long-term freeboard of more than 8 m under operating conditions and 2 m under the probable maximum flood condition.CITATION:Chapman, P J, Wrench, B P and Gowan, M J, 2015. Reliable predictions of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a final void are vital if mine operators propose to decommission final voids in open cut mining operations. The catchments feeding final voids typically comprise a large proportion of coal placed or re-shaped spoil piles. Spoil piles from open cut coal mining operations have distinctive hydrological characteristics, which result in unique run-off behaviour. There is a need to understand the nature of spoil hydrology processes in order to predict the long-term hydrological behaviour and water quality responses of such systems. Preliminary estimates indicate that it may take 20 or more years for a void to flood. It is impractical for mine owners and operators to wait until long-term hydrological and water quality conditions have been established in a void, before reaching agreement with regulators about mine closure conditions. Reliable simulation of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a void are therefore. The adoption of an agreed modelling approach and sharing of results from field data programs could result in the establishment of a database that could be used, with regulatory approval, for assigning parameter values, without the need for a specific data collection program for every individual void. Industry and regulators should agree on the model adopted for predicting post-closure behaviour of spoil/void systems. This will require reliable, robust methods for field data collection. This paper describes the field monitoring, data collection, model preparation and simulations undertaken over a three year period for Australian Coal Association Research Projects (ACARP) Project C7007. It presents the findings of that research, and provides comment on aspects of the project that were undertaken well and on aspects that could have been done better. Limited data is presented in this paper due to confidentiality arrangements with the relevant mine sites.

"The most commonly used method of thick coal seam extraction in Polish deep mines is multislice longwall (MSL). In MSL stability of goaf in the roof as a result of previous extraction in upper slice is a major geotechnical consideration that must be managed.This paper outlines the results of a wide range of investigations carried out in three longwalls that were in operation in a multislice system using caving with additional fly ash goaf stowing. The longwalls were operated by Katowicki Holding Weglowy SA (KHWSA) in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin of Poland.Examinations were completed on the properties of goaf at the roof of longwalls ie measurements of strength parameters of the goaf material by means of a borehole hydraulic penetrometer, determination of the goaf condition by means of a borehole endoscope and laboratory testing of the caved rock. The Monty Copper Gold Deposit is an ultra-high grade mine in Sandfire Resource’s Doolgunna region which was completely drilled out and developed within two years of commencing mine development. During this period, a total of 986 grade control diamond drill holes were completed, assayed, and validated, 15 levels developed, and 3136 faces mapped. The aggressive schedule meant a high flow of geological data was produced, validated, and incorporated into regular geological model updates. To process this data at a rate which allowed for timely use, more robust data processing methodologies needed to be generated. A new validation system was implemented which required two levels of validation being applied to any diamond drilling update. Step one was the validation of initial physical data including survey pick-ups and logging. This was done prior to new drill data being added to the geological model. Step two was the validation of assay data which was required prior to resource estimation. The implementation of Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo modelling software also allowed for a more seamless and efficient modelling workflow. The use of the Leapfrog Geo vein systems allowed for more rapid generation of geological models which then afforded more time for stringent assessment of the mineralisation system. An example of this was the introduction of cross-shift peer reviews in which opposing rosters of geologists would rigorously evaluate the previous rosters work prior to reporting. This additional level of validation resulted in more robust geological models and the identification of new ore trends. This presentation will detail the evolution of the Monty Geological model from a simple tabular indicated resource into a complex highly refined measured resource. Themes will include how the model was produced using workflows developed and optimised to meet key deliverables.

Porgera is located in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera Joint Venture treats a high grade epithennal gold deposit. Most of the gold occurs as submicroscopic particles in a sulphide matrix although there is some quite coarse free gold. Anticipated gold production is 900 000 oz per year for the first six years of operation.Stage I of the treatment plant consisted of a concentrator and leach/CIP Circuit. It was commissioned in August 1990. Design throughput was 1500 tpd with an anticipated gold recovery of 60 per cent. Throughput achieved was actually 1850 tpd with an average gold recovery of 69 per cent. CIP tails were accumulated in a pond awaiting retreatment by pressure oxidation.

The number and severity of sulphide dust explosions in underground metalliferous mines have increased in recent years, despite various methods used to prevent or inhibit them. A dust explosion occurs when a cloud of combust- ible dust in an oxidizing atmosphere is exposed to an ignition source with sufficient energy to ignite the dust. A computer blast simulator model was used to investigate the movement of the fractured rock, temperatures and volumes of the explosion gases in a 70 m high, 24 m wide open stope.

Kamhalda is located within the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, specifically in the Norseman - Wiluna greenstone belt. Numerous nickel sulphide deposits have been mined at Kambalda with I I mines currently operating. For several years, a program of in-mine geophysics has been operating at Kambalda, with downhole electromagnetics (UHEM) one of the key techniques used. Three case studies illustrating the uses of UHEM in mines are presented here. In the first example, the Helmut South deposit was discovered as the result of an extensional exploration program. The first drill hole in the program intersected ore width and grade mineralisation at around 760 in depth. Two subsequent holes intersected subgrade mineralisation. DHEM surveys were completed in each of these three holes, with anomalies recorded indicating that a large conductor was located directly south of the first hole. The next hole intersected this target, for an intersection of 21.6 in at 3.5 per cent Ni. DHEM continued to play a role as the exploration program proceeded, providing drill hole targeting based on anomalous responses recorded in each drill hole. In the second example from Carnilya Hill, old drill holes were surveyed with DHEM in order to search a large section of prospective contact for massive ore pods. An off-hole anomaly was detected and subsequent mining discovered a small but high-grade pod of ore which was extracted for a considerable profit. Carnilya Hill has limited reserves and discoveries such as this, assist in keeping the mine operating. In the third example from Victor, a program of drilling intersected thin ore profiles in an interpreted flanking position. Without massive ore close by, these intersections probably do not constitute economic mineralisation. DHEM surveys of three holes did not detect any conductors. The area is now regarded as sterilised of significant massive ore and exploration efforts and dollars can be focused in other areas. These three examples demonstrate the type of successes that can he achieved through the use of DHEM.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

The variation of austenitic grain size with temperature for the steels XKSlSO and XK9261 was determined using the vacuum ctching technique.It is shown that the effect of temperature on the mean grain intercept is relatively small, up to approximately 950°C. Above this temperature the rate of increase of grain size rises sharply.Within the limits of the 1-4 hr vacuum etching times used the effect of time at temperature is relatively small on the ASTM grain size of the steels.

This paper outlines the journey of cultural maturation and management system development at the Mt Rawdon (MRO) gold mine from its acquisition by Evolution Mining Limited (Evolution) in late 2011 to 2016.Evolution embarked upon a series of projects that aimed to improve the operational consistency and implementation of change on-site, while leveraging off the existing strengths of the operation. This document describes the gaps that were identified, the processes used to close them, and the resulting cultural change and production outcomes, with a specific focus on how to optimise the culture at any mining operation.MRO had a history of four owners in less than three years when it became a key asset of Evolution. The site leadership team (SLT) decided to influence the culture at MRO by reviewing and upgrading the existing management processes.The first priority was to improve transparency and collaboration at the SLT level, followed by improving competency in project management. The next phase was to strengthen the internal communication using a deliberately designed network of meetings, communication screens and other initiatives. Once there was some traction, the focus moved toward increasing production volume and decreasing cost per unit by improving short-term planning and execution capability. Together with other initiatives, this resulted in improved collaboration between all functions, which in turn netted over 37 per cent mining production uplift.Following solid success, a process of prioritisation and alignment management was implemented. This supported the ‘Mine to Mill one operation’ ideal and allowed the SLT to decide month-by-month what actions were to be prioritised. These priorities incorporated production realities and longer term imperatives of the balanced business plan.Much of this work was completed during a period of declining gold prices and a relentlessly strong Australian dollar, making it difficult to justify spending money on improvement projects. It is indeed an honour to address the perth branch of the australian institute of mining and metallurgy and to have the opportunity to talk to you about the future role of upgraded ilmenite on t102 feedstock supply and demand. There have been many papers written on upgraded ilmenite supply and demand and now I would like to share with you QIT's view of the situation first, a word about demand, although I will be talking principally on the supply issue. The principal use of t102 is in the manufacture of pigments which, in turn, are used in paints, plastics, and the paper industry together with a few miscellaneous uses, while a further b% or so of t102 minerals are consumed for the manufacture of titanium metal and for the manufacture of welding electrodes. the total demand for contained t102 is of the order-of 3 million tons per annum, and the general consensus in the industry is that growth rates should be of the order of 2% annually- it is against this backdrop that suppliers must compete with one another and produce least cost materials for the pigment industry. At the moment, supplies are relatively tight, but the generally slow growth in demand coupled with the abundance of titanium bearing minerals should ensure that long term the reverse is generally true. Now, let us examine the supply situation. Titanium is the 9th most abundant element in the earth's crust, so the problem from the producers` point of view is not one of scarcity of titanium minerals, but of how to extract most economically t102 feedstocks from a wide variety of choices- up to the present, all titanium feedstocks are being derived from either rutile or ilmenite rutile, at about 95% t102 content, is indeed a premier raw material which does suffer from potential scarcity and rutile supplies will likely be a diminishing factor in future decades- whereas ilmenite, a combination of iron and titanium oxides found in varying ratios, may be found in huge quantities all over the world.

The discovery of the Cuffley Lode at Mandalay Resources Costerfield Operations provided an opportunity to extend mine life via mining the offset depth extension of the previously worked Alison Mine. Access from the existing Augusta Mine placed the initial Cuffley underground workings at approximately 250 metres depth from surface. As the new orebody transitioned towards production, a secondary means of egress needed to be established. The depth of the initial capital development presented a challenge in establishing a secondary means of egress that could be confidently relied on. The availability of land to locate a surface shaft collar further reduced available options and geotechnical drilling further limited suitable shaft locations. Time limiting factors such as permitting and having a secondary means of egress in as soon as possible, further highlighted that an innovative secondary means of egress was needed. A consideration of using an emergency gig lowered by a suitable sized crane supplied by an external crane contractor was investigated and found to be a suitable outcome. This Emergency Gig was deployed via the Cuffley Return Air Raise. When trialled, the emergency gig was found to provide a reliable, repeatable extraction method with an acceptable level of risk. Issues discovered during such trials further improved the process to a point where this extraction method became the adopted secondary means of egress for additional lodes that existed at depth. When assessing possible methods of secondary means of egress, the use of a third-party crane and custom designed and fabricated emergency gig should not be discounted. Where a crane can be sourced within an acceptable timeframe, the emergency gig extraction method provides a reliable safe and cost-effective means of secondary means of egress, especially when multiple shafts are to be developed. Local laws may negate the ability to employ such a system, although it is believed with good communication and well-constructed risk assessments, this system can be safely deployed.
