A numerical groundwater model was used to predict the nature of interactions between heavy mineral sands mining operations and the groundwater regime at North Stradbroke Island, Southeast Queensland. North Stradbroke Island is formed mainly of massive vegetated Cainozoic aged dune sands. Since the 1950s, a number of operations have mined rutile, zircon and ilmenite on North Stradbroke Island. In such mining operations, a dredge and an associated processing plant are floated in a pond either above or below the prime groundwater table The numerical model was based on the North Stradbroke Island Groundwater Management Model, developed in 2001 by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M). This model was constructed using the modular, cell-centred, finite-difference groundwater flow model, MODFLOW, developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The NR&M model was refined to improve model resolution and detail for simulating dredge mine paths. Of particular interest were: water table fluctuations induced by mining for the identification of slope stability risk; the optimisation of sand spear arrays supplying mine make-up water requirements; inflow and outflow rates to the dredge pond for overall mine water balance; and interactions with Eighteen Mile Swamp and water supply bores controlled by the Redland Shire Council (RSC). Depending on the water level in the dredge pond compared with the surrounding groundwater table, water either flows out of the dredge pond into the groundwater regime or from the groundwater system into the dredge pond. The MODFLOW river package (RIV) was utilised for the modelling study. Dredge pond movement was simulated using specialised software developed by Watermark Numerical Computing (WNC) to interpolate pond positions and map the dredge path to the model grid both spatially and temporally. As tailings placement affects the groundwater system through increased recharge, the MODFLOW recharge package (RCH) was utilised to simulate different recharge efficiencies. Long-term model predictions were made for the period from July 2002 to May 2021. Results of the modelling showed that exchanges of flow between mining operations and the groundwater regime could be effectively managed. The study provided valuable information which was used to develop an appropriate mine water management plan.

The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. Test work is the foundation upon which the success of projects and subsequent operations is laid, reflected in Professor Arthur Taggart’s pithy observation: ‘Make your mistakes on the small scale and your profits on the larger scale’. Indeed, Professor AllanTrench has succinctly noted that ‘Get the metallurgical characteristics wrong and you don’t have a project’.With deposits becoming lower grade, more structurally and mineralogically complex, final products requiring lower levels of impurities and tailings management demanding more attention, test work now assumes even greater significance in the acceptance and successful execution of a project. This paper is the first in a series aiming to stimulate thought on the metallurgical test work process by getting back to the fundamental basics through exploring and providing some guidelines for the metallurgical testing world, noting preferred practices as well as precautions and mitigations. This covers the key characteristics of metallurgical test work programs, including what needs to be done, sample selection, quality control and associated drivers, and most importantly, selecting, assessing and managing test work facilities. This paper presents the physical modelling results of subsurface fracture development associated with Iongwall mining operations and an application of image processing techniques to interpretion of the results. Physical modelling results haióbeen obtained by employing a large sand and plaster model loaded purely by gravity as a means of fracturing the subsurface strata above the longwall excavation. The results have shown fracture development and crack propagation as a longwall face advances and demonstrated that the strength of stratified rocks, the presence and position of a weak band-, and the extraction thickness, have significant effects upon the overall fracture patterns above the excavation. Binary images of fracture patterns were scanned from the black and white photographs of the tested models using an image analyser coupled to a video camels. These images were manipulated by a custom written C program which allows the images to be processed in both vertical and horizontal direction. The images were filtered to quantitatively differentiate between vertical and horizontal fracture intensities. The vertical fracture intensity is particularly important as vertical fractures are considered to provide the main avenues for surface and subsurface water inflow into the excavation. The use of the image analysis techniques has shown a promising improvement in image enhancement and in model results interpretation in a quantitative manner. The numerical nature of the image analysis results will allow further statistical comparison with other modelling techniques to be undertaken and significantly increase the scope for use of the modelling technique results.

There are continuing developments in underground narrow vein mining, from innovative mining methods using low-profile equipment to adaptations of current mining methods using equipment such as road-headers. The development of new mining methods and mining equipment has one purpose in mind û to extract narrow reef orebodies keeping dilution to a minimum, whilst maximising mining recovery. Achieving this will increase the head grade of the ore mined and reduce the tonnes delivered to the mill. Narrow vein mining in Australia has been limited to traditional hand held or mechanised drill and blast methods using existing æoff the shelfÆ equipment. Numerous trials have been undertaken using rock cutting technology and lower profile equipment, but these mining trials have not resulted in the full implementation of any new mining method or the adoption of low profile equipment in narrow vein mines as an accepted mining methodology. Mine operators in Canada and South Africa have teamed up with a number of equipment manufacturers and have taken steps to further mechanise and automate the mining of narrow vein orebodies, in particular to increase safety and productivity. The challenge to Australian narrow vein mining projects is to capitalise on work undertaken by overseas mining companies and equipment suppliers and to investigate the adaptation of low profile coal mining machinery to specialised metalliferous mining. With the inevitable fall in metal prices, it is necessary for Australian mine owners and mining contractors to apply these specialised methods and equipment to make narrow vein mining profitable.

The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron; however, emissions from sintering and coking cause environmental pressure for the integrated steel works. The combustion of coke fines (breeze) during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (GHG) (eg carbon dioxide) and is a source of SOx and NOx emissions. Coking capacity is also constrained by environmental concerns and economic factors, such as increased coke consumption, and short supply is leading to high prices. Improved coking practices, which result in reduced production of fines, are also contributing to the tight availability of breeze for sintering. This combination of factors presents an opportunity to consider alternatives to coke as a fuel for sintering. CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide liberated during combustion can be sequestered back into growing biomass. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource and can be integrated with good land management practices such as remediation of salinity affected land. Weeds, especially woody weeds, can also be used as a source of biomass for charcoal, and integrating char production with weed management can help address a pressing environmental issue in Australia. Previous reported preliminary testwork indicated that the use of Red Gum char as a replacement for coke resulted in a product sinter of comparable quality, improvements in productivity and significant reductions in SOx and NOx emissions. In the latest testwork, CSIRO has examined the properties of a range of potential charcoals, and has conducted a further series of granulation and small-scale sintering trials with them in simulated Japanese Steel Mill iron ore blends. Sinter fuels characterised and evaluated include industry sourced coke breeze, commercially available wood char and a charcoal from prickly acacia (acacia nilotica). Prickly acacia has been declared a noxious weed, is widespread in Australia, and is classified as a æWeed of National SignificanceÆ. The results presented in this paper support the notion that charcoal outperforms coke in many aspects of iron ore sintering and factoring in environmental considerations makes the switch to charcoal even more favourable.

The exploration and mining risks are investigated and compared to the risks of smelting, secondary processing and other normal industrial activities. This study concentrates on the risk before, or at the investment decision. Internal and external risks are distinguished. Internal risks are the risks inherent in every engineering design and common to all projects. The main external risks are the financial risk, changes in prices, location problems and geological factors. Financial risks concern every capital-intensive and export-oriented project and cannot be considered as typical mining risks. Changes in prices, i.e. the market risk, concern every industry using raw materials, but the market risk is especially accentuated in the mining industry. Problems of location and infrastructure are normally more significant in mining than in other projects, and geological risks are unique to mining. All these risks associated with mining projects combine to form a risk at least twice as high as that for other normal industrial activities. Within the range of profitability of mines, which on average is the same as in the manufacturing industry, only a few highly profitable mines exist. These few mines are the sole reward for the high risks taken.

The safety and stability of construction structures are often affected by blast-induced waves. Investigating the generation mechanism of shear wave (S-wave) during blasting is important, because it has a strong effect in blasting damage. In this paper the generation mechanism and verification of S-wave was studied analytically and numerically. Under the finite velocity of detonation (VOD) of cylindrical charge or the compression wave (P-wave) communicating with the interface of different media during the propagation, the generation mechanism of S-wave was analysed. Propagation of blasting wave in cylindrical charge was simulated with the elastic model, and the generation of S-wave induced by finite VOD was proved. To compare with different numerical methods in simulating the generation of S-wave, the blasting process of instantaneous detonation was simulated by using the elastic model, elastic-plastic model and smoothed particle hydrodynamics and finite element method (SPH-FEM) coupled model. Results demonstrate that the S-wave could not be found in middle section of the charge if the elastic model is employed. But when using elastic-plastic model and SPH-FEM coupled model, the generation of S-wave could be verified. Improved process control can be achieved through the accurate and reliable on-line measurement of critical process parameters in real time. Over the past few decades on-line analysis techniques have been developed and applied in the mineral and energy industries for the measurement of process stream composition, mineralogy, particle size and flow rates. This has led to increased throughput and product quality while reducing processing costs and minimising emissions. The support of a sustainable mineral processing industry will require the further development of on-line analysis and control technologies. The application of developments in instrumentation combined with improved control strategies will lead to improvements in process efficiency resulting in large economic benefits to the industry, reduced energy usage and lower process emissions. There is a clear convergence of interests in being able to better measure and control minerals processing in terms of the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental impacts. Technology is increasingly becoming available enabling measurement across the entire spectrum of minerals processing from mining to hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. CSIRO is developing a range of these new technologies. A number of these developments are discussed in the present paper, namely: on-line particle size analysis and acoustic emission methods to enhance the control and optimisation of grinding circuits; on-line mineralogy of dry powders and slurries; on-line bulk elemental analysers for application on conveyor belts and in smelters; and the development of new sensing technologies for sorting base metal ores.

The concentrator at Bougainville Copper Limited has an annual throughput of 48.2 million tonnes/year producing approximately 175,000 tonnes copper, 16.1 tonnes gold, and 50 tonnes silver. Conventional three stage crushing and screening are used to reduce run of mine ore to an average product d80 size of 6.7mm. The primary objective of the crush- ing plant is to provide a continuous supply of ore to the 12 primary grind- ing mills via an intermediate 300,000 tonnes capacity stockpile. Since ball mill performance improves with decreasing mill feed size, the crushing plant continually strives to produce the finest possible product for mill- ing. This has been achieved by increasing plant availability and total installed power, and improving crusher manganese liner life, screen cloth life, and plant operating practices. A recent innovation was the installa- tion of a 35 million tonnes/year preconcentration screening plant in Janu- ary 1987 to recover high grade fines from low grade run of mine ore types in which the mineralisation occurs preferentially along fracture planes in the parent rock.

This paper describes a major ventilation study for the expansion of the El Teniente mine operated by Codelco, Chile. El Teniente is one of the world's largest under- ground mines. The design effort was under- taken in three stages and involved a partial mine ventilation survey with network simula- tion, detailed stope ventilation investiga- tions, and design of the entire mine ventila- tion circuit based on production plans to achieve 112,000 tons per day by 1995. The partial ventilation survey provided values of representative friction factors and resistances for typical ventilation raises and airways. These values were used to conduct detailed modeling of the block caving levels to investigate the most cost effective and practical means of providing the required ventilation. The results of these analyses were extrapolated to the proposed expanded mechanized zones.

Platinum Group metals have been known in New Zealand since the 1880's but not produced on a large scale. They have been neglected because their value was not appreciated rela- tive to gold and their value was often very low, reflecting demand, and because recovery was difficult compared with recovery of gold. With the rising price of most Platinum Group metals and the perfection of gravity and flota- tion recovery methods, recovery of platinum along with gold from alluvial deposits is more attractive. Platinum Group metals are known in several different environments in New Zealand, ranging from alluvial placer deposits to layered basic to ultrabasic intrusions and quartz veins. None of the known occurrences have been ade- quately prospected and there is a real possibi- lity of future discovery of important deposits. Several New Zealand based and at least two offshore resource companies are currently involved in exploration, prospecting or mining for Platinum Group metals in New Zealand.

The Chang Jiang Tunnel and Bridge Project, when completed, will provide a fixed link between ShanghaiÆs rapidly developing Pudong District and Chong Ming Island, situated in the Yangtze River delta. The link includes 7.5 km of bored tunnel from the Pudong to the intermediate Changxing Island from where the link comprises viaduct and a cable stayed bridge. The bored section comprises twin 13.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined three-lane highway tunnels. At its deepest point the tunnel will be 55 m below the river. Cross passages will link the two bores for passenger evacuation. Tunnel boring commenced in October 2006 and is scheduled for completion in mid-2009. The paper describes the key features of the design and construction of the bored tunnel by two 14.53 m diameter slurry TBMs and eight cross passages using ground freezing techniques in alluvial sediments. A decision to include light rail below the road deck was taken after the completion of the detailed design. This posed a number of design challenges including passenger evacuation to the road deck, and the redesign of the low point sumps. The various options considered are discussed together with those adopted for construction.

Occurrence data of Tastubian,Sterlitamakian, and Aktastinian (all of Sakmarian Stage of Early Permian) brachiopod genera are analysed by Q-mode cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and discriminant analysis based on presence or absence of genera. Five faunal provinces and their corresponding generic associations persisted throughout the Sakmarian Stage. The additional Sasian Province incorporating the Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes became recognisable in Sterlitarakian and strengthened in òAktastinian, implying a Tastubian-Sterlitamakian rifting event, followed by subsequent northward drift and divergence from Gondwana, and convergence with Laurasia. The nature of Permian 'Tethys' is discussed on the basis of faunal migration and abrupt changes of faunal provinciality in Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes.

Information from bores in the LatTobe Valley has been accumulating for over fifty years, and the manual extraction of details has become a limiting factor in their use.Punched card equipment, installed by the State Electricity Commission for accounting purposes, was known to be available for reasonable periods, and it was suggested that this could help in the extraction of data from the voluminous records.Investigation showed that they could be substantially duplicated on cards, with consequent gains on many operations; the cards being regarded as an auxiliary to the existing records.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RECORDSAs a bore is drilled a continuous record of the strata is kept, together with notes on the presence of water or any unusual features which the driller may observe.When coal is struck, samples of each ten feet are usually sent for analysis.The location and surface level of each bore is fixed by surveyors, and details of dates and methods of drilling are also kept.Bores are allocated numbers, prefixed by the name of the parish within which they are drilled. Numbers are allocated in conjunction with the Department of Mines, to avoid duplication.Records of strata and analyses are kept in folders, with 100 bore numbers per folder.Standard plans are drawn, showing the locations, bore numbers and surface levels. For each bore they also show the depth and thickness of coal struck, and the total depth drilled.Cross sections are then drawn, connecting the various coal seams, which have been identified by the geologist.

Integrated Remote Operations Centres (IROCs) have a crucial role in optimising a mine’s carbon emissions, especially as industry faces an imperative to achieve net-zero emissions on an accelerated timeline. To meet this time pressure, operations must adopt a comprehensive approach to energy-related carbon management and history has proven that modern technologies cannot be simply bolted into existing operations. An IROC is the most dependable solution to enable a swift transition from strategy to operational tactics that support carbon optimisation. Achieving net-zero emissions requires addressing significant energy management challenges such as fleet electrification, integration of renewable energy sources and large-scale energy storage. These challenges demand a profound change in planning, managing and executing work at large operations. The key to overcoming these challenges is an integrated approach incorporating collaborative decision-making across the value chain and more sophisticated planning approaches. Additionally, closer integration with downstream processing offers opportunities for carbon optimisation across the value chain. This includes the ability to supply tailored products that meet more varied feed-requirements of customers transitioning to less carbon-intensive processes and developing collaborative decision-making across the entire steelmaking value chain (by incorporating steelmakers, transport, coal/natural-gas/hydrogen supply, energy supply and iron-ore supply). However, this requires significant improvement in collaborative maturity and integrated decision-making capability. Finally, the imperative to reduce carbon emission demands the introduction of a range of new technologies into existing operations. The new technologies will increase the operational complexity of the mines and IROCs will need to evolve capabilities to manage the increase complexity and support the effective operationalisation and integration of these new mining technologies. This paper outlines the new capabilities required and the role of IROCs in effective integration across the demand value chain. The focus is on building on the mining industries’ existing IROC experience and augmenting with processes, technologies and lessons from other industries.

All large open pits in Australia have been mined, or are planned to be mined well below the local water table. This raises several issues that impact on mine safety, mining costs and regulatory approvals. Some pits will be æwetÆ, where they are mined through permeable horizons and where there will be measurable groundwater inflows. These will require some form of dewatering. There may also be some difficulties in the disposal of excess water. Other pits, may be ædryÆ, where they are mined through impermeable material and there are no measurable groundwater inflows but where there are stability issues related to hydrostatic pressures within the pit walls. These may require some form of depressurisation. Some pits are a combination of both. Effective management of groundwater inflows and groundwater related stability issues and the development of cost effective and environmentally acceptable dewatering and depressurisation systems requires an understanding of site specific hydrogeological conditions and practical experience in what works best for different conditions. The presentation will include an outline of the key hydrogeological factors that impact on large pits, practical methodologies for achieving dewatering/ depressurisation, and some case studies from the Goldfields, Pilbara and North Queensland.

Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013.
