The ironmaking industry consumes a large amount of fossil fuel derived carbon as heat source, reducing agent of iron ores and carburising agent of reduced iron. Although the demand for drastic decrease of carbon dioxide emission, carbon is an essential element for smelting process of molten iron. The carbon recycling ironmaking process by circulating CO has been already proposed to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the production of molten hot metal is not considered in this process because sufficient amount of carbon does not dissolve in reduced iron by CO. Therefore, our group has suggested a new carbon recycling ironmaking process which can produce hot metal. In this process, free carbon and iron carbides produced by carbon deposition reaction using metallic iron as a catalyst are used. It is known that only Fe3C is obtained as iron carbide by using CO gas, however, Fe5C2 is also produced by adding H2 gas. The composite agglomerated with these carbonaceous materials and fine iron ore (Deposited Carbon-Iron oxide Composite: DCIC) is reduced and melted in a furnace. It is reported that Fe3C in DCIC accelerates the reduction reaction and melting of the composite. In this study, the effects of iron carbides and free carbon on the melting behaviour of DCIC are investigated. Fe3C, Fe5C2 and free carbon were produced by vapour deposition using porous iron whiskers and CO-CO2-H2 gas. These were agglomerated with hematite reagent at a certain ratio to prepare DCIC samples with and without Fe5C2. The samples were heated up to 1300°C in inert atmosphere. The DCIC containing Fe5C2 completely melted and iron nuggets were obtained after the experiment. This behaviour was not observed in the composite without Fe5C2. This indicates that using Fe5C2 is more preferable than Fe3C for molten iron production using DCIC.

Gosowong is situated within the Neogene magmatic arc of Halmahera island in the Maluku province of eastern Indonesia. It was discovered as the result of a rigorous ground reconnaissance program in an area with no previous mining activity. The broad structural setting in the Gosowong District comprises an elongate dome formed by the forceful upward intrusion of magma along a deep-seated structure, resulting in associated tensional fracturing trending parallel to the long axis of the dome. Four copper-gold porphyries and numerous low-grade epithermal veins occur within this mineralised corridor, with the Gosowong Deposit being the only economic occurrence discovered to-date. Gold mineralisation is hosted within multiphase epithermal quartz-adularia and quartz-chlorite fissure veins, breccias, and stockworks. High-grade gold mineralisation is emplaced in two gently south-plunging ore shoots along a 400 m section of the north-striking, east-dipping, Gosowong Fault, the primary control on mineralisation. The Gosowong Fault is believed to be a tensional fracture associated with uplift of the dome. Lithological variation and structural intersections play a large role in grade distribution within the vein zone. Host rocks comprise a wide range of shallow marine, intermediate-basic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of ?late Miocene age. The Gosowong gold deposit is a classic example of a low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposit, based on the abundance of adularia and illite in the alteration assemblage, and low base-metal sulphide content within quartz-adularia veins. The indicated resource is estimated at 0.99 Mt at 27 g/t Au and 38 g/t Ag for a total of 870 000 ounces Au, using a cut-off grade of 2 g/t Au.

The need to recover metals from low grade deposits, old tailings, etc., combined with improvements in equipment design and the development of new extractants, has resulted in solvent extraction (SX) metal recovery reaching new importance (Webster & Ferron, 1993). The basic principle of solvent extraction is the use of an equilibrium system in which a metal ion is transferred from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, (Equation 1), (Ritcey, 1984). M + E ME . (1) The organic extractant (E) is usually specific for a certain metal ion (M) and forms a metal complex in the organic phase, leaving the impurities behind in the aqueous phase. To recover the metal, the equilibrium is reversed and the metal ion is transferred back from the organic to another aqueous phase in a process called stripping. The metal is then recovered from the aqueous strip solution, usually by electrowinning.

Sampling of grain, animal feeds (solid and liquid) including important mineral mixtures in the Danish agricultural sector is subject to an ongoing investigation with the objective of improving existing (suboptimal) sampling procedures. Results from the first six months are presented here; the project will continue for two more years and will include international collaborators (Australia and Canada). The Danish authorities have instituted a system of control analysis, which contains a set of mandated sampling and analysis methods. From a preliminary survey it was concluded that in fact all of the existing sampling procedures are not optimised in the light of Pierre GyÆs Theory of Sampling (TOS).

With the recent rapid development of Chinese steel industry, the world iron ore resources of good quality are depleting rapidly. As a result, iron ore deposits of lower quality have been or are being developed to meet the market demand and are becoming increasingly important to iron and steel companies. As concentrates have advantages of high Fe grade and less harmful impurities, they are ideal sweeteners to maintain sinter grade and quality when high proportions of low-grade ores are used in the sinter blends. However, due to their fine nature, addition of concentrates will inevitably increase the proportion of adhering fines and reduced the proportion of nucleus particles of the sinter blends, which can adversely affect the green bed permeability and sintering productivity. In the present study, lab scale sintering tests were carried out under the conditions similar to the sintering process to examine the effect of concentrates on the high temperature sintering characteristics of sinter blends and the structure and strength of the resultant sinter analogues.

This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. Liquefaction potential is also considered. A limit equilibrium solution is used to obtain factors of safety against failure of the fill during mining of adjacent stopcs

Recent increase in the development of underground space in urban areas in Australia has included soft ground tunnel construction. The ground movements associated with soft ground tunnel construction may present risk to other existing and proposed structures in the nearby vicinity. Much experience has been gained both in the UK and Asia in recent years in the engineering evaluation of this risk. The paper presents a procedure to assess these aspects of soft ground tunnel construction with reference to recent projects.

This paper describes a new mine backfill method based on a newly invented binder with several years of test results from laboratory and onsite applications. The new binder has several advantages over traditional Portland and slag cement binders. One tonne of the new binder can replace two to three tonne of Portland cement when used to consolidate backfill and can result in the same compressive strength within seven days. When comparing backfill slurries of the same pulp density, the new binder attains more volume of in-place backfill mass than Portland cement because of the high crystallisation of water, resulting in tightly filled stopes. The crystallisation of the water provides for less or no dewatering in the backfill stope and easier transportation of the backfill slurry. Pastefill performance can be achieved by using pulp densities typical of a hydraulic backfill and the new binder, all the while transporting with the same ease of hydraulic fill.

CaF2 has been a common constituent in a wide variety of welding fluxes, including those used for submerged arc welding (SAW). The widespread use of CaF2 stems from its role in lowering the liquidus temperature as well as the viscosity of the molten slag that covers the weld pool. However, the harmful effect of fluoride evaporation from molten flux, on the environment as well as the health of the users is becoming increasingly evident over the years. This has led to increasing attention towards reducing the CaF2 concentration in the fluxes. The fluoride-free formulations face the challenging requirement to maintain the thermo-physical properties (viscosity, liquidus temperature etc) like those observed in fluoride-containing fluxes. In the present work, three fluxes with compositions in the CaO-MnO-SiO2-Al2O3 system have been identified as promising alternatives to the CaF2-rich fluxes. However, the thermo-physical properties of any such flux need to be comparable to CaF2-based commercial SAW fluxes before it can be adopted for regular use. The single hot thermocouple technique (SHTT) has been used by several researchers in the past as a tool for observing the melting and solidification characteristics of fluxes. This device has been developed in the present work and is used to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The measured solidus and liquidus temperatures from SHTT were compared with the results from differential thermal analysis (DTA) and simulations using the FactSage™ software for a comprehensive understanding. In spite of having a slight deviation in the measured values from the multiple techniques, the results obtained from these multiple methods show that the selected compositions could be potential CaF2 free alternative welding fluxes.

To demonstrate the advantages of using electronic delay detonators over pyrotechnic detonators, a trial using the DNES Dynatronic System was conducted at the KCGM Mount Charlotte operation in 1998. The trial clearly demonstrated that accurate control over the firing delay time between blastholes can lead to fragmentation improvement and ground vibration energy control which are two important issues for the Mt Charlotte underground operation. Excellent fragmentation was achieved by employing a 12 ms delay sequence. Detailed fragmentation analysis has shown a 10 to 20 per cent passing increase for the rock fragment size from 0.1 to 0.4 m compared with the pyrotechnic detonator firing. There was no increase in ground vibration level on the surface with the electronic detonator firing even though the electronic detonator firing had a much shorter blast duration than the pyrotechnic detonator firing. In fact, our energy calculation has clearly shown that much less energy had been propagated to the surface from the blast using electronic detonator firing.

Fragmentation modelling has been in use in the mining industry for a long time; however, there are still some aspects to tackle with regard to its use for strategic/planning and day-to-day purposes.On one hand, an important amount of resources are allocated to the task of calibrating and validating a good fragmentation model. Nonetheless, errors during the implementation stage introduce uncertainty into the prediction.On the other hand, it is common practice in the mining industry to use only discrete values to represent the fragmentation from blasting (k20, k50, k80), which provides a biased interpretation of the situation as, for instance, the best and worst possible cases are not taken into account. This is particularly critical when a continuous improvement philosophy has been adopted and modelling is used to either modify the drilling and blasting designs or plan ahead.It is well known that every site has particular conditions (rock mass, equipment, drilling and loading practices, among others) that often define unique trends in implementation. These trends can be captured using statistic and probabilistic techniques and then used as proxies for further analysis.This paper explores the potential of including implementation data in the form of probabilistic distributions into the Swebrec model to improve the performance of this engineering tool during the decision-making process.The fragmentation results of four designs were modelled using three different degrees of accuracy in the implementation for the burden, spacing and explosive column length.The data analysis showed that the probabilistic approach helps to achieve a broader perspective regarding the fragmentation that it is possible to obtain and the implications for the subsequent processes. The analysis also showed that the likelihood of producing similar fragmentation with different designs (involving different powder factors and costs associated) increases with the variability of the implementation.CITATION:Parra, H and Zenteno, D, 2015. Newmont Australia is the operator of the Mt Leyshon mine near Charters Towers, Queensland. Mt Leyshon is an open cut gold mine, which processed on average 5.0 Mt of ore and produced up to 250 000 ounces of gold per year. Mining was completed in early-2001, followed by treatment of low-grade ore stockpiles for a further 12 months. Approximately 250 ha of waste rock dumps have been rehabilitated. Rehabilitation of two of the three tailings storage facilities (TSF) has been completed and the third is in progress. A field performance monitoring system that includes an automated meteorological station, large-scale lysimeters (measurement of net percolation), and in situ moisture content sensors (measurement of moisture storage changes in the cover material) were installed to monitoring performance of the cover systems placed on the waste storage facilities. This paper focuses on the installation and calibration of the in situ moisture monitoring system. The moisture monitoring system provides automated detailed in situ volumetric water content data above and within the large-scale lysimeters. A portable unit that provides spatial in situ moisture content measurements at additional locations on the cover system is also utilised. The paper will focus on installation and calibration of the in situ water content monitoring instrument in the waste rock, coarse cover material, and fine textured cover materials of the tailings facility and waste rock dump cover systems.

The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western lasiuania use, uuiusatise solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. The initial paste fill design was based on the Bad Grund and Ranunelsberg Mines paste fill systems of Preussag in Germany and comprised pumping filtered tailings paste some 1.2 kin uphill from the mill to the mine portal, where cement was to be added before being distributed underground. The system was designed following initial testwork that was undertaken on a bulk sample of ore mined from the scar surface Sill Zone. Subsequently, during the mining of the Zone 96 orehody, it was found that there were significant mineralogical variations in the composition of the ore mined. Following processing, the resultant Icach residue caused significant changes in the paste rheology and therefore the pump and flow characteristics. An alternative solution was implemented that involved the use of agitator trucks to transport the cemented paste to the portal. This required modifications to the fill preparation system and also the underground distribution system. Laboratory strength tests of the HDPF using actual gold plant leach residue showed low early strengths were attained with HDPF containing only filtered leach residue. Therefore, high binder addition rates or an increase in the fill cycle time would be required to allow the fill to gain sufficient strength. A considerable amount of potentially acid generating waste rock also requires underground disposal. By blending the waste rock with the HDPF, the strengths were improved and the required cement addition rate reduced by about one-half. The potentially acid funning waste rock is encapsulated in the highly alkaline cemented paste, minimising the potential for acid generation.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

This paper examines the effects of the changes in stress that a coal may undergo as part of the drainage process. As a consequence of this, some coal seams will come to the situation that they have zero horizontal stress existing within them at the time of mining. The hypothesis of this paper is that this lack of horizontal confining stress means that on mining, the vertical stresses may be easily raised to a level where failure occurs. This failure may be accompanied by significant energy release from energy stored within the coal as well as that coming from the roof and floor. To determine the state of stress within the coal seam, the concept of the effective stress path that the coal passes through is examined and is found to be very dependent on the shrinkage of the coal with degassing, the Young’s modulus of the coal and its Poisson’s ratio. The Young’s modulus of the coal is important and has been found to be highly dependent on the state of stress within the coal. It may change by more than an order of magnitude.CITATION:Gray, I, 2014. Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. Cyanide has been used for over a century worldwide for gold extraction. However, the presence of several metals and metalloids in ore requires greater amount of cyanide for an efficient gold recovery due to their solubilisation in conjunction with gold. The extraction residues are discharged into tailing storage facilities (TSFs) and may cause bird mortality if there is exposure to cyanide-bearing wastewater exceeding the toxic threshold. The toxicity arises from free cyanide released from weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide complexes. The International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC) has deemed 50 mg/L of WAD cyanide released into TSFs to be safe for wildlife protection. However, this concentration is based on observations of an apparent lack of toxicity rather than a toxicological approach. The National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) identified in 2010 that there is a lack of toxicity data to properly assess the environmental significance of cyanide levels at gold mines. Lack of knowledge for the toxicity of free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes to wildlife led to consider alternative direct assessment techniques for designating safe levels. Whilst toxicity may be assessed by using young chickens with animal ethics approval, the traditional bioassay approach to assess cyanide toxicity is impractical for gold mine TSFs. Bioassays using algal species such as Euglena gracilis, a unicellular alga, are widely used for ecotoxicological studies. A unique feature is that the Euglena gracilis Z cell has plant-like while SMZ cell has animal-like characteristics. SpaDiSÖ is a revolutionary approach to the spatial analysis of point data using geometry to analyse geometry! SpaDiSÖ uses each and every spatial relationship and is not dependent on mathematical models. For n points there are n2 û n spatial relationships and, because of the square function, the method yields interpretable results for both small and large data sets. SpaDiSÖ is an alternative to variography for directional studies. At the regional scale, the analysis can assess distribution patterns of mineralisation and potential controlling structures. At the deposit scale, the characteristics of zones of mineralisation such as direction, spacing, high-grade ore direction and grade distribution can all be deduced.

Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.
