Queensland is Australia's second largest mining state with world-class deposits of coal, base metals, bauxite and magnesite. The total value of Queensland's mining production is about $5 billion per annum, and coal accounts for around 55 per cent of that total. The environmental issues which arise as part of management and regulation of the industry are resolved within the EMOS process. The Environmental Management Overview Strategy is the cornerstone of the policy 'Environmental Management for Mining in Queensland' developed jointly by the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy and the mining industry. The Gordonstone Coal Mine is the largest underground mine to gain approval under the new policy. Accordingly, Gordonstone has a well planned environmental management program which takes into account site-specific factors and provides for continuous compliance with the provisions of the Mineral Resources Act in a self-regulatory context.

At present we are witnessing large investments in the iron ore industry, fuelled by demand from Asia. At the same time, there is a changing landscape in pricing of iron ores, with the recent demise of the benchmark system and the evolution of market based index pricing systems. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that gives them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions, and in setting quality price differentials.This paper describes the use of the Marx value in use (VIU) model to quantify the downstream value of iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering, pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples given for the relative value of haematite, Marra Mamba, and channel iron deposit (CID) ores.

It is a well known fact that the best method of rock reinforcement is to avoid physical ground support. This goal can be achieved by means of: - Increasing the rock structural strength - Geological definition and forecasting. - Sequencing the excavation - Smooth blasting In many cases however, extra ground support is needed in order to maintain safe working conditions. In an open pit, the structural strength of rock cannot be increased by lowering the pit walls due to economical reasons. Economy demands steeper walls and less waste to be hauled to the dump. The geological conditions can also often be extremely poor and unpredictable. For excavation sequencing and smooth blasting there are good possi- bilities, such as cleaning of the pit walls after the main excavation, arul- ing of long small diameter straight inclined holes, use of smooth blasting techniques and lightened explosives.

"Booster fans are relatively rare in Australian coal mines. However, as mines become progressivelydeeper it is likely that such fans will be increasingly adopted as a method to sustain or improve the ventilation of underground workings. The reasons why booster fans may be an att ractive alternative include: increased cost of sinking additional ventilation shafts with greater seam depths; environmental objections to shaft sinking projects; and increasing urbanisation and surface constraints limiting availability of potential ventilation shaft sites. As Tahmoor Colliery movedinto its northern lease the ventilation constraints became the limiting factor on production. Thelimitations of the old workings meant that the existing ventilation system would be inadequateto sustain the required production. Extensive ventilation modelling was carried out to evaluatevarious potential solutions and the recommended option was the installation of a booster fanor fans, to gain underground access to an already approved shaft site in the northern lease.Proposals were sought from recognised fan manufacturers and various alternative arrangements were tendered. Ultimately the choice was between one large centrifugal fan and a set (three or four) of smaller æauxiliary-likeÆ fans in parallel. The successful tender was for a single centrifugal, an arrangement very similar to the booster fans that have been operating eff ectively at Westcliff Colliery for a number of years. This paper describes the current ventilation network, evaluation of the ventilation options, the fan selection process, and the project status to date."

The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. The kinetics of cementation of silver chloro-complexes from sodium chloride solutions onto copper and zinc was studied using rotating disc electrode system. The activation energies were found to be 10.8 and 30.5 k7/mole, in a 3M NaCl solution on copper and zinc discs, respectively. Higher dissolution factors were obtained on zinc disc, due to hydrogen evolution, whereas, copper dissolved close to the predicted values. Scanning electron microscope studies were conducted both on copper and zinc- cdiscs-to evaluate the deposit morphology and its effect on reaction kinetics. Two stage deposit growth was observed both on copper and zinc discs. Smooth, coherent initial deposit followed by tree-like secondary dendrites formed on copper, whereas, scattered bulbous initial deposit followed by porous dendrites was typical on zinc disc.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a process by which coal is converted in situ to a combustible gas that can be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock. The process has been used in commercial-size projects in the former Soviet Union for more than 40 years, while significant national research programs have been undertaken in the United States and Western Europe. The Chinchilla UCG project is located at a site southeast of Chinchilla in Queensland. The UCG operation commenced in December 1999. A controlled shutdown of the process was initiated in January 2002 and successfully completed in April 2003. The process is currently under conservation and ready for restoration of gas production for commercial use in the near future. Groundwater plays an important role in the gas formation process during UCG. Most of the process water required for chemical reactions is usually derived from the coal seam itself and from surrounding aquifers. If insufficient water is available for chemical reactions the UCG gas will contain reduced concentrations of combustible components, and conversely, excessive water influx into the process area would cool down the reactor and thus limit the energy available for gas production reactions. Because of the importance of groundwater in the gasification reactions, and the potential to contaminate groundwater if the process is not correctly controlled, it is essential to predict and to control the groundwater influx into underground gasifiers during and after underground gasification. Control of groundwater requires a thorough understanding of hydrogeological conditions in the vicinity of the gasifier in order to be able to predict inflow rates, and constant monitoring throughout the process of water production rates and groundwater pressure in the coal seam and adjacent aquifers. Hydrogeological testing and groundwater monitoring in the vicinity of the UCG operation commenced six months in advance of its initiation. Monitoring of groundwater pressures in the vicinity of the gasifier have also been undertaken using vibrating wire piezometers installed in the coal seam at varying distances from the gasifier. This paper presents the results of the hydrogeological testing and groundwater quality monitoring carried out at the site, which show that it is possible to operate a UCG process without uncontrolled impacts on groundwater.

Upgrading of Indonesia's Bauxite by Washing Method There were eight bauxite samples used in this research, three samples from Kijang contain total SiO2 18.36 - 29.16 per cent, Al2O3 40.12 - 48.36 per cent, Fe2O3 4.27 - 5.13 per cent, one sample from Tayan, contains total SiO2 4.69 per cent, Al2O3 38.95 per cent, and Fe2O3 19.67 per cent, and four samples from Mempawah contain total SiO2 33.5 - 44.8 per cent, Al2O3 29.8 - 35.9 per cent, Fe2O3 7.29 - 9.88 per cent. All of those bauxite ores have not fulfilled the requirement for Bayer process yet; therefore simple up-grading using a rotary drum scrubber is needed. The scrubbing process was carried out with time variable up to 60 minutes with solid percentage applied was 50 per cent and rotary speed was set up 30 rev/min. The bauxite was washed by following steps: scrubbing, screening, drying, and finally it was analysed to show chemical content. The washed bauxite produced has size fraction that is retained on the 1.7 mm of screen opening. The result of the research shows that the higher alumina content of the raw bauxite, the longer washing time is needed moreover the higher quality of the washed bauxite is produced. The highest alumina content of the washed bauxite was 53.67 per cent with the alumina recovery was 89.66 per cent and the concentration ratio of 84.80 per cent was achieved within 20 minutes of washing time of the raw bauxite (Al2O3 48.36 per cent). The washed bauxite resulted from this research is suitable as a raw material for Bayer process.

Waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are important secondary sources of many valuable materials, including Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) defined by the European Union (EU): lithium, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. Additionally, LIBs typically contain nickel and copper, which are classified as Strategic Raw Materials for EU since 2023. In recent years, great effort has been made to develop efficient recycling processes for waste LIBs. Pyrometallurgical processes have been essential in industrial production of metals for many decades. These technologies are relatively mature, with high adaptability for different raw materials. Pyrometallurgical treatment in LIB recycling typically involves the use of smelting processes, in which waste batteries are heated above their melting points and metals are separated through a reduction reaction in the liquid phase. Through this recycling route, cobalt, copper, and nickel can be efficiently recovered in the form of a metal alloy, whereas lithium and manganese are lost in the slag phase. The goal of this work was to increase the recoveries of valuable battery metals through a combination of hydro- and pyrometallurgical unit operations. First, industrial Li-ion battery scrap underwent a selective sulfation roasting stage, where the aim was to transform LiCoO2 and Mn-oxides into Li, Co and Mn sulfates. After roasting, the battery scrap was leached in distilled water with a solid to liquid ratio of 100 g/L at 60°C and recovered 95 per cent of Li, 61 per cent of Mn and 35 per cent of Co. After leaching, the solid leach residue was mixed with industrial Ni-slag and biochar, followed by reduction at 1350°C in argon atmosphere. The high-temperature smelting experiments were conducted as a function of time (5–60 mins) to investigate the reduction behaviour of battery metals. The results show that Co and Ni from the slag and leach residue can be efficiently recovered in the slag cleaning stage.

The detonation pressure of an explosive is a function of its density and its velocity of detonation (VOD) and relates directly to the degree and manner in which the explosive loads the surrounding rock. The suitabil- ity of an explosive to any particular situation is determined not so much by the total energy released but more by the rate at which it is released. As the science of rock blasting advances it is becoming economically more important to quantify explosive performance, particularly with respect to quality control and fragmentation. As part of a major explosive user, BHP Central Research Laboratories have developed a number of tech- niques to determine the detonation characteristics of explosives. These include a method of continuous velocity of detonation measurement based on the SLIFER principle. This not only enables the VOD of the explo- sive to be determined, but also has the versatility to allow factors such as under priming, slow run up, the effect of water, variable energy load- ing and the velocity of the shock wave in the stemming to be assessed. Multi point VOD systems have also been developed for more routine appli- cations. With a minor modification they can be used to determine the absolute delay of detonators accurately and economically. Direct deto- nation pressure measurement methods have also been developed based on piezoresistive techniques. Future developments include the incorpo- ration of all the above techniques into a single, portable package, allow- ing easy use on the mine site.

The paper presents new developments of the methodology of open pit coal production scheduling optimisation. They deal with the specific features of the exploitation of single coal seam and utilisation of truck-shovel and dragline systems. A production scheduling optimisation model is developed as a linear programming problem. The objective function maximises the net present value of the mining project under the technological constraints for meeting the demand function of the coal processing plant and effective utilisation of the available production equipment. Both principles of mine planning, coal quality optimisation and waste deferment are incorporated in the model. Results of a case study are provided to illustrate the applicability of the optimisation model.

The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. One critical factor in open pit mining projects is the estimation of the recoverable reserves. The reason for this is that at the valuation stage there is a lack of information about future metal prices and production costs. Consequently, the estimation of the recoverable reserves needs to be done based on a fixed break-even cut-off grade (BECG), in which fixed expected metal prices and production costs are assumed throughout the operating life of the mine (OLM). In this paper, an alternative technique for estimating the recoverable reserves of an open pit mining project is presented and explained in detail. The main characteristic of this technique is that it estimates the recoverable reserves of the project using mining costs as reference: this is done due to the fact that mining costs are easier to model than metal prices. Another important characteristic of this technique is that it uses the uncertainty of the geology of the orebody, given by simulations of the deposit, to make final strategic decisions, such as the selection of the operating life of the mine and the optimal production rate, which minimise the risk of not achieving future production targets while maximising the upside potential of future rewards. As it will be shown, the final outcome of the proposed technique is the generation of a robust open pit design, that include cutbacks and ultimate pit limits, called the marginal open pit mine design (MOPMD). One characteristic of the MOPMD is that, at each production period, it will be characterised by their respective geological uncertainty, given as probability distributions of ore, waste and metal quantities, and by marginal economical project indicators, such as cut-off grades and metal prices, among others. The University of Wollongong was named University of the Year 2000, for its work in preparing students for the e-world. Computer facilitated learning is being introduced into subjects throughout the engineering course. First year mining engineering students are introduced to computers, e-communication, using the UniversityÆs web based information system, and web based subject delivery. Mining engineering students in the mid-years of the course use programming languages and numerical computation software such as MATLAB, while students in the final years use a range of commercially available professional engineering software such as TALPAC. Most of these subjects are offered as part of the UniversityÆs Learning Online program, co-ordinated by its Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR). Learning Online subjects are delivered using the Web Course Tools (WebCT) environment. WebCT allows all resources to be accessed through the web, allows email communication between lecturer and student, and allows discussion groups for the exchange of ideas. Students can submit their assignments through WebCT and receive immediate feedback. This paper describes how WebCT has been used to deliver a first year engineering computing subject, mid-year numerical computation subjects, a mining economics subject and mine planning subjects.

"Continuous improvement on metallurgical treatment plants is possible only when good data and analysis of the data are available. Good data implies appropriate and accurate mass measurement coupled with good sampling practices and accurate chemical analysis especially when carrying out monthly metallurgical metal reconciliations. Adequate characterisation of key samples (eg tailings, feed, concentrates and others) at timely intervals is an important part of a good continuous improvement program. The data from this will help identify opportunities to improve operation performance and thus profitability. Time and time again history shows us that mine closures are sustainability failures. Mine operators do not know how to turn the mine closure into an asset and communities around the mine do not know how to plan or what to implement to be sustainable when the mine needs to close. If we want to achieve sustainability when we close a mine, we generally need to consider what economic activity we will have to create leading up to the mine closure to ensure that the communities remaining in the area are not worse off after mining than before. There is not one silver bullet solution to mine closure, as all mines are affected by different environmental and socio-economic conditions. That is one of the reasons why mine closure is so difficult.Effective stakeholder engagement is the nucleus around which sustainability is built. Achieving sustainability as part of mine closure means not only a self-sufficient community, but also could lead to transformation of that asset.A key issue is that neighbouring communities become completely reliant on the mine. The mine has influenced the economic, environmental and social aspects of the community and with no alternative economic sources. The community and municipality will struggle with capacity to maintain infrastructure, services and jobs. This not only impacts the mine workers and their families but also other businesses and people in the town that make a living by servicing the needs of the workers and their families. Social problems associated with a mining operations and closures need to be considered. The misuse of alcohol, domestic violence, breakdown in law and order, economic and health issues all have a severe influence. Families often need to relocate from the mining town to find work. The purpose of this paper is to list by tabulation and flow sheet, the operating equipment and installations in use at Rosebery, and to refer to particular items which may be of interest for purposes of comparison, or because they possess some unusual feature. The general perspective has been taken from the viewpoint of operating and maintenance experience.The sequence begins with ore breaking and transport and proceeds through milling operations. The paper is in two sections, first, mechanical equipment, second, electrical equipment. A brief outline of a scheme for using gravel wash for stope filling, which is in course of installation, has also been given.

Due to environmental considerations, mineral processing plants are increasingly recycling water to decrease the impacts of wastewater on environment and the depletion of fresh water resources. Industrial experience has shown that increasing recycling water in flotation typically negatively impacts the recovery and selectivity, especially in the selective flotation of minerals from complex sulfide ores. The major reason for the reduced selectivity is typically the inadvertent activation of sphalerite or pyrite by the heavy metal ions (HMI) in solution. These HMI are often produced during milling and flotation and absorbed by other minerals. In the normal flotation pH value range (8 - 10), these HMI are often in the form of precipitates or complex ions that may re-appear in solution or become active should conditions favour this. In this paper, microflotation, batch flotation and XPS surface measurement were used to investigate the use of HMI absorbents additions to the pulp to improve flotation selectivity of a complex sulfide ore. It has been demonstrated that HMI removal does improve flotation selectivity by facilitating more effective depression of the sphalerite. Microflotation and XPS surface measurements have shown that HMI absorbents compete with sphalerite to absorb HMI, and thus reduce the surface concentration of HMI on those sulfides. The practical use of HMI absorbents in complex sulfide ore flotation is also discussed.

The binary indicator coding of assay and lithological data according to a single criterion or multiple criteria is a powerful technique for representing mineralised shapes through the modelling of probabilities. This can be as simple as using a single indicator to model the probability of occurrence of a condition, usually a grade threshold or a lithology, but it can also be used with a number of categories. Case studies are presented to show the power of this approach, where the geological controls on mineralisation or on the distribution of a rocktype or alteration, often coupled with mineralisation, are unclear. The categorical approach is often used as a de facto grade filter in disseminated or stockwork mineralisation. The ultimate expression of the indicator formalism is in multiple indicator kriging (MIK), where a conditional distribution of probabilities is generated for each estimation panel. This has applications in recoverable resource estimation, as the input for continuous or categorical simulation, where the distribution of sample grades is multimodal, or when there are superimposed mineralisation events with different orientations. However, in some cases, MIK is being used as an excuse for ignoring a quality geological interpretation. Examples from the public domain show the abuse of the categorical and MIK approaches to modelling probabilities, together with a plea for greater consideration of the geology.

"Mine-derived sedimentation in rivers can have significant impacts on the processes and features of the receiving environment and impact on communities reliant on this environment. However, identifying and quantifying the contribution of mine-derived sediment to the receiving environment can be complex. This is particularly the case in remote environments and where little/no baseline assessments have been undertaken. One approach that can be used involves sediment fingerprinting, whereby a unique tracer is identified within the mine-derived sediment to discriminate between mine- and non-mine derived sediment sources downstream. The technique typically involves sampling of sediment at upstream, control and impact sites and sites within the mine deposit. Laboratory analyses are run on all the samples to determine whether the chemical signature (eg presence/concentration of specific metals) differs between each group of samples. In complex environments where the mine-derived signature may be difficult to detect from a basic review of the data, or where sampling constraints may limit the number of samples for analyses, statistical methods can be used to help identify sediment groups.
