The high oas emissions which are associated with high production lonowall mining have provided a need to investigate the limitations and reouirements of the various gas control methods. The major relationships between oassiness and various other parameters are presented with computer analysis being adopted to assess the respective correlations. Some of the relationships are studied in detail with emphasis being placed on methods for overcomino the changes in conditions resulting from high production levels. The importance of the various drainage systems which can be adopted to combat high gassiness levels are analysed. Logical and necessary steps are also proposed for gassiness prediction and data monitoring as well as various combinations of gas drainage systems. The gassiness prediction methods which are discussed outline the need for a sound knowledge of the established worldwide methods together with a comprehensive study of the local mining and geological environment in order to develop a system which is adaptable to the changing conditions. This is particularly important in mines where high coal production levels are anticipated and the need for accurate gassiness relationships is essential.

Sensitive and tolerant species of macroinvertebrates were present across a wide range of conductivity concentrations in the Isaac River catchment in Central Queensland, indicating the need for further ecological studies in the field to underpin the development of regionally-tailored guidelines for conductivity. The Isaac catchment has naturally high conductivity, but there is also increasing pressure on resource companies to ameliorate saline mine water discharge. Recently, catchment management efforts have included a revision of the water quality guidelines that are specific for the broader Fitzroy catchment. These guidelines include the use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of ecosystem health, but developing and applying such guidelines first requires a good understanding of macroinvertebrate ecology and population dynamics, ideally from field validation. To date, studies of macroinvertebrate tolerance to conductivity in southern freshwaters, as well as in laboratory-based ecotoxicological tests conducted in Queensland, have suggested that ranges exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm are likely to have negative impacts on survivorship of all taxa. However, these results may not be transferable to natural populations of macroinvertebrates from the Isaac, where the naturally high-conductivity water may allow the opportunity for adaptation. To test this, macroinvertebrate assemblages were examined at a series of sites in the upper Isaac River catchment at the end of the dry season in 2012. Patterns in the assemblages were examined together with water quality parameters, in order to gauge the ability of macroinvertebrates to survive at conductivity concentrations exceeding 1000 ¦S/cm. The specific conductance of the field sites ranged from 477 ¦S/cm to 9791 ¦S/cm and a total of 39 families from 13 orders were identified. Species richness was not significantly different between sites of differing conductivity. Macroinvertebrate populations were dominated by Dipterans as well as the traditionally more pollution-sensitive families Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. There was an absence of any correlation between conductivity and species richness (P > 0.050), suggesting that macroinvertebrate taxa richness occurs independently of conductivity, at least in this particular cohort of mining and/or grazing influenced ephemeral systems in Central Queensland.CITATION:Stitz, L, Fabbro, L D and Kinnear, S, 2013. Reaction products between high-temperature hydrothermal solution/uppermost mantle peridotite or lowermost crustal gabbro have been reported along Wadi Fizh of the northern Oman ophiolite; they are named as ‘mantle diopsidite’ and ‘crustal diopsidite’ respectively (Figure 1).The mantle diopsidite contains Cr-rich minerals like chromite, Cr-rich diopside (<2.5 wt per cent Cr2O3) and Cr-bearing grossular (<7.0 wt per cent Cr2O3). The chromites are varied in shape in the mantle diopsidite, euhedral to anhedral chromite grains contain globular inclusions of grossular and chlorite, and film-like chromite veinlets branch off from partially dissolved coarse chromite grains. In the crustal diopsidite, fine chromite grains are included in oscillatory-zoned skeletal uvarovite, especially in its high-Cr zones. The uvarovites are rich in rare earth elements (REEs). Direct laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analysis of the primary fluid inclusions detected Na, but not K.Our detailed studies of Wadi Fizh diopsidites clarify that the high-temperature hydrothermal solution dissolves chromite grains at the uppermost mantle section and precipitates hydrothermal chromite at the lowermost crust section. In addition, REEs were mobilised in the hydrothermal solution together with Cr. Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. Gold at the Harbour Lights Mine (HLM), WA occurs principally in pyrite (Py) and arsenopyrite (AsPy) minerals rendering it inaccessible to direct cyanidation. Froth flotation produces a concentrate with low mass recovery and with high recoveries of sulfides. After investigating several alternatives, a novel flotation process has been developed to separate the concentrate into pyrite and arsenopyrite rich fractions. The pyrite fraction is finely ground and cyanide leached, while the arsenopyrite is treated off-site. This paper describes the separation process from laboratory bench scale through to commercial operation at the HLM gold plant.

This paper addresses, in particular, the influence of winding depth on the selection of head ropes for Koepe winders. Because this is just one aspect of winder design that affects the operational safety of the winding system, the paper starts by considering all the issues governing the life and safety of the winding ropes. Regulations from a variety of countries are reviewed and comparisons of the legislated rope factors of safety and their variation with winding depth are made. This is followed by a discussion of the typical observed mode of in-service deterioration of Koepe head ropes. This mode of deterioration is due to fatigue and is influenced by the load range occurring in the ropes. Parameters contributing to load range are discussed and the influence of winding depth is highlighted. Lessons learned from early experience with very deep Koepe winders in South Africa are recalled. Predictions of load range as a function of depth are made, from which general rope life predictions are made for ropes selected by conventional national factor of safety requirements. This is illustrated in graphs comparing rope life as a function of depth. Typically a reducing life with depth is predicted. A rope selection strategy is advocated, which is based on achieving a constant rope life irrespective of the depth of wind. A new factor of safety (or rope design factor) equation is prepared that has the trend of increasing with depth. This proposed equation is compared with other published proposals that promote an increasing rope factor of safety with depth. It is shown that smoother winder drive controls enhance winding rope life and this improvement is quantified. The paper concludes by pointing out the consistency in predicted and observed life of winding ropes selected in accordance with legislated factor of safety approaches. It recommends the adoption of a new rope design factor equation for rope selection, to be used in conjunction with appropriate codes of practice for winding rope condition assessment and for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and testing of Koepe winders. The new rope design factor equation approaches a limiting economic depth of wind at shallower depths than the existing Koepe factor of safety approaches. However these older approaches æbuild-inÆ a reducing rope life with depth. The new rope design factor is therefore a more consistent way to select Koepe ropes and to evaluate economic trade-offs between Koepe and conventional double-drum or Blair winding systems.

The Hauraki Volcanic Region of the North Island developed between 18 and 1.9 Ma. Initial andesitic volcanism from 18 to 12 Ma was followed by 12 to 1.9 Ma volcanic activity that included rhyolitic, dacitic, andesitic, and basaltic compositions, with a gradual migration of activity to the SSE. Early andesitic volcanism evolved over the course of 8 m.y. to more silicic compositions; this trend was reset and repeated by post-10 Ma andesitic volcanism. Early and later andesites are otherwise remarkably similar in trace element composition. Rhyolites have the most diverse compositions, suggesting a major role for crustal input in their formation.

This paper gives the background to the development of solvent extraction processes for the recovery of metals from aqueous solutions. Its growing importance in Australia for the recovery of both uranium and copper is dis- cussed, as well as the developments in mixer-settler design as applied to recent plants. The economic significance of solvent extraction as an alterna- tive to cementation is discussed and important features of each process are highlighted by comparison of costs for each process in a hypothetical situa- Tion.

Pine Creek Goldfields Limited (PCG) is rehabilitating the Enterprise Pit to an aquatic habitat and potential water resource. This paper discusses the development and implementation of that plan. Pine Creek Goldfields Ltd's Enterprise Mine is located approximately 230 km south of Darwin. Open cut mining of the orebody commenced in 1985 and continued for eight years with 14 million m3 of ore and overburden extracted. Geochemical testing of exposed rock types in the pit has demonstrated a propensity to produce acid, and dissolved metals. A plan of management has been developed and implemented to minimise the risk of acid formation and improve the overall water quality in the final void. In developing the plan prime consideration was given to reducing the potential for pit water to impact upon the regional groundwater. An interception system was constructed on Pine Creek to divert approximately 9 km2 of upper catchment into the northern end of the Pit. Construction of the diversion system was completed in December 1993 and a comprehensive surface and groundwater monitoring program initiated. The monitoring program and associated studies are also discussed.

While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

A new high intensity flotation process FASTFLOT was deployed to recover residual zinc from the zinc circuit tailings at Pasminco Mining's Concentrator, Broken Hill. Performance of the FASTFLOT process is discussed with respect to various size fractions. Results suggest that the process has an affinity not only for fine particles but also for +200 ¦m particles which the conventional flotation cells failed to recover. Various strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also discussed.

Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy environments. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. However, the future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation as well as optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. As a result, this paper investigates a ‘lean production’ (LP) philosophy for the organisation of future mines. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent LP can be used to organise for attractive mining. It first defines what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the LP concept will be given as well as a review of how it is discussed and utilised in mining today. This paper addresses the unique environ- mental programmes which prevail at Ranger and their importance in the future profitability, of Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd. (RUM) Industrial relations, general safety, and occupational health have long been regarded as part and parcel of the concept to 'manage for profits'. More recently, the need for environmental protection has also become an important management consideration. This is particularly so at the Ranger Uranium Mine where environmental protection is very closely and continuously regulated. Since the commencement of operations at Ranger some three years ago the company has operated within these regulations and demonstrated clearly that yellowcake can be produced efficiently, economically and safely. The company also recognises that in order to ensure continuity of production, it will have to continue to operate within these strictly supervised Regulations.

The Osborne copper-gold deposit (within the Trough Tank project area) is located in the Cloncurry Shire about 195 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. It is hosted by Proterozoic metasediments of the Eastern succession of the Mount Isa Inlier. The deposit is overlain by 25-40 metres of Mesozoic cover, so it represents a true "blind target". Placer Exploration has 100% outright ownership of the property, having purchased the remaining 10% interest in the property from Shell in early 1993.Intensive exploration, both surface and via drilling at Osborne, has taken place since 1985, when CSR Limited Mineral Exploration and Development Group (acquired by Placer in 1988) entered into a joint venture with Billiton Minerals. Exploration effort from 1985 to June 1988 outlined a 20 kilometre strike length of magnetic horizons, in what was termed the North-East, Central and Southern anomalies, which were drilled with weak indications of copper-gold mineralization in the North-East anomaly. During the later half of 1989, four core holes were drilled into the shallower northern partofthe North-East anomalywhere previous drilling had outlined economic intersections of mineralization. These holes encountered high-grade copper-gold mineralization confirming the potential for an economic deposit to be hosted within the ironstone sequence. Further drilling involving over 400 holes (100 kilometres of drilling) has brought the deposit up to its present resource status.The current resource inventory is 36 million tonnes grading 2.0% copper and 1.0 grams pertonne gold and includes a high-grade zone of 13 million tonnes grading 3.6% copper and 1.5 grams per tonne gold. The discovery of this potential economic mineralization resulted from a persistent exploration effort based on indications that a large mineralizing system existed within a sequence of ironstones.

Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.

In contrast to the '50s and '60s, the period of the '80s and '90s seems likely to have low growth in demand but much greater levels of technological change. In such a climate there will be pressure on costs, productivity will continue to rise and competitiveness will be closely associated with maintenance of the most effective technology. The penalties for inappropriate investments, whether short sighted or mistakenly based on a particular view of the future, will be greatly enhanced. Accordingly, there will be a need for significantly improved anticipation of technical change and thus for better planning. Study of the funding and direction of the world's R&D effort can provide a useful input to the planning processes within industries and individual firms. Such a study also suggests some insights into the characteristics of those countries which have achieved substantial growth and high standards of living over the past two decades. These characteristics may offer significant reminders for our own development. The particular implications for the Australian minerals industry include the need for direction that is sensitive to changing market requirements and customer practice. This is not simply "more of the same." In particular it appears essential for both basic and applied R&D to provide a sound basis for the purchase and ongoing development of the new technology required to achieve international Competitiveness.

A considerable volume of work exists in the literature examining the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and sulfide minerals. Broadly, most sulfide minerals are more noble than forged steel grinding media used during comminution, therefore a galvanic couple between the media and the sulfide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the grinding media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulfide minerals thereby affecting their floatability. This paper explores the science behind these corrosion reactions, and provides an explanation of their impact on the pulp chemistry of sulfide mineral slurries and subsequent flotation behaviour. A number of laboratory and plant case studies are used to illustrate the benefits of changing to a more inert grinding media.

The extraction of gold and silver from chalcopyrite concentrates has been investigated. In view of the recent interest in non-cyanide leachants for gold and silver, one such alternative reagent, namely thiourea, has been employed in the present work. Precious metal leaching was attempted from received copper concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates. Pre-oxidation of the concentrates was carried out by three different methods, namely roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. After pre-oxidation and leaching of the base metals, the leach residues were subjected to further leaching for precious metal extraction. The results obtained on the extraction of gold and silver from received concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates are presented and the effectiveness of the three pre-oxidation routes employed is compared.

Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

Batch experiments in a 0.6 m diameter mill have shown that improvements of about 13 per cent in the efficiency of energy utilisation can be realised in ball mills by replacing 25 per cent of the ball charge by an equivalent volume of cost-free critical size pebbles from AG/SAG mills. For a mill of a given size, speed and charge filling, the rate of size reduction of ore particles depends on (i) the frequency of grinding media collisions (ii) the probability of capture of ore particles between the colliding grinding media (iii) the probability of fracture of the captured particles. The probability of fracture depends on the magnitude of collision energy. The distribution of collision energy into shear and impact events determines the relative strengths of attrition breakage and impact breakage. The efficiency of energy utilisation depends on which of the two mechanisms of breakage is more desirable in a particular milling stage. In this paper collision data from a series of DEM simulations of a mill charged with steel media and a mixture of steel media and pebbles is presented in energy spectra and spatial distribution maps. The data provides the necessary detail to elucidate the improvements in the efficiency of energy utilisation in ball mills when using a mixture of pebbles and steel media.
