Confirmation of significant mineable reserves of high grade silver ore at Elura Mine has led to the development of a high cost, high recovery mining system. At the contact of oxidised and sulphide ores lies a supergene zone of enrichment which has provided a contrast, not formerly imagined, to Elura's primary development and stoping operations. Because of the soft nature of the ore, intense ground support practice has been combined with a panel cut and fill continuous mining system to extract a reserve of small, but most valuable Proportions.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989.Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90% of the gold in the bottom 7 metres.The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below.Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced; Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken.While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

The application of methods using large diameter down holes has become an important facet in both the development and stoping operations of mines within the Aberfoyle group. Holes of up to 98 metres (vertical) and 78 metres (inclined) have been successfully used in stoping operations. A number of rises have been developed to meet ventilation, servicing and escape-way requirements. The most ambitious rise to date has been a..vertical 93 metre long by 4.50 metre square ventilation rise. Although some early problems were experienced, the ultimate successful completion of this rise has enabled the technique to be incorporated with confidence in future mining plans. This paper summarises experience in long hole rising techniques, their evolution from the original cratering concepts, and the approach to further development of these techniques.

In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. The arid and semi-arid region of Western Australia occupies about two-thirds of the State equivalent to an area of about 1.8 million sqkm. Groundwater demand in this area has historically been linked to the pastoral andmining industries commencing with the gold discoveries in the Eastern Goldfields some 100 years ago. Substantial increases in demand have occurred in the past two decades initially as a result of nickel discoveriesin the early 1970's and more recently the rapid resurgence of the gold mining industry. Mineral exploration and development in the Great Sandy Desert at Telfer (gold) and Kintyre (uranium) and in the Great Victoria Desert at MulgaRocks (uranium) has also been accompanied by detailed groundwater investigations.

"Several mine scheduling tools exist for use in optimising and scheduling the reserve according to in situ value. These tools generally value the ore on a per block basis according to regressed recovery models based on ore grade and type. It is then the task of the plant metallurgist to ensure that these ore blocks are fed to the plant in a manner that satisfies the prevailing plant constraints. This task is often completed in complex Excel® spreadsheets that are modified over time with factors applied to account for plant modifications or limitations.It is the authors’ experience that this approach is difficult to audit and replicate in a consistent manner. Furthermore, operational decisions, such as primary grind size or autoclave oxidation are made on the metallurgist or managements’ perceived optimum value and does not necessarily represent a cash flow based optimum.Many processing plants contain multiple internal constraints. As ore feed grades and properties change over the life-of-mine (LOM), processing-bottlenecks shift from one unit process to another and different operating strategies need to be adopted to maximise cash generation from the process.This paper presents a unified optimisation approach to scheduling ore based on a circuit mass balance to describe the process plant with individual models for each significant unit operation. The approach allows for optimisation over multiple input variables and the inclusion of linear and non-linear constraints.This optimisation process has been applied to different complex gold operations. The end result is an automated scheduler that selects the optimum blend of ores as well as plant operating conditions that satisfy all internal plant and shutdown constraints while maximising the objective of choice (metal production or cash flow). The models are also valuable for evaluating expansion or debottlenecking opportunities of individual processing units. The photoresponse of natural mineral pyrite and galena electrodes has been studied in aqueous solutions on freshly fractured surfaces (some fractured in situ) using moderate overvoltages. When fractured in situ, the electrode potential of both minerals instantly drops several tenths of a volt. Pyrite exhibits a spontaneous anodic photocurrent at fracture, which indicates upward band bending (depletion layer) on the n-type electrodes. The negative surface charge responsible for the depletion layer is believed to arise from a surface state that is intrinsic to pyrite surfaces, possibly modified by hydroxide ion adsorption. The flat band potential, Vty, of pyrite is at approximately -1.0 V (SCE) at pH 9.2 but to reach V(b, pyrite has to be cathodically decomposed. In contrast, galena assumes the flat band potential at fracture. Subsequent polarisation of galena at potentials positive of Vth produces an anodic photocurrent (upward band bending) and polarisation negative of Vro a cathodic photocurrent. Most of the galena electrodes studied were degenerate n-type and at potentials negative of Vtb, no cathodic photocurrents are observed, indicating the bands cannot be bent downward, consistent with the Fermi level at the surface merging with the conduction band edge near Vn,. Several were close to intrinsic, with the photocurrent changing sign near Vn,.

Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately. In 2010, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) was Australia’s largest gold producer, with total annual production of 788 000 ounces. Of the gold produced by KCGM in 2010, 95 per cent was extracted from the Fimiston open pit, also known as the Superpit. The Fimiston operation encompasses the historic Golden Mile, from which more than 55 million ounces of gold have been extracted from the world-class Fimiston lode style mineralisation.The operational performance of the KCGM Fimiston open pit was reviewed for the period between 2005 and 2010. Key performance metrics reviewed included mined tonnes and grade, cost per ounce of gold produced and the mine to mill reconciliation trends. The years 2007 and 2008 were characterised by a decline in performance against key performance metrics. The ore zones were diluted, with the excess tonnes mined resulting in lower grade and an increase in the cost per ounce. Poor reconciliation between ore mined, the ore reserve model and the grade control polygons was also observed.A series of improvement initiatives were implemented in late 2008. As a result of changes made to the grade control and mining practices, the site performance recovered. Unplanned dilution was reduced, which had a positive impact on mined grade. The lower tonnes combined with higher grade reduced the cost per ounce to below budgeted levels in 2009 and 2010, enhancing the profitability of the operation. The operational performance between 2005 and 2010 was compared to the turnover statistics for the KCGM geology department over the same period. Turnover accelerated between 2005 and 2007, peaking at an annualised rate of 43 per cent. With the onset of the Global Financial Crisis and the implementation of retention initiatives, turnover reduced significantly between 2008 and 2010. A strong consistent correlation was observed between the turnover trends in geology and the performance of the grade control function and resultant site metrics.The cost of turnover is known intuitively, however, rarely quantified. To evaluate the benefit of the improved performance, a detailed financial model was used to quantify the impact of the grade control function. In 2010, the headgrade exceeding budget by just four per cent contributed an additional A$24 M of value to KCGM. In contrast, if the 2008 performance had been replicated in 2010 (-9 per cent on headgrade), the result would have removed A$61 M in value from the business. The KCGM experience between 2005 and 2010 demonstrates the value of human capital in a mining operation and the importance of a high performing geology grade control team to the profitability of a mining operation.

The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the FrothSim flotation simulator and to demonstrate its ability to predict the performance of real flotation circuits. Example simulations are presented in which the feed rate to the circuit is varied, followed by simulations in which a cleaner section and recycle loop are added to the rougher bank.The simulator is able to predict both the recovery and the grade produced by the cells at all locations in a circuit and the simulator is shown to produce plausible grade recovery curves. It also demonstrated that the performance of banks of cells improve as the feed rate to the bank increased (improved grade for a given recovery), but that more cells are required to give the same overall recovery.

The Waterview Connection will complete a strategic Auckland motorway route linking the south, west and north. The project will comprise 2.5 km of ‘undrained’ driven tunnels and 900 m of drained cut-and-cover tunnel and portals.The project is aligned beneath a stream valley of Oakley Creek incised through alluvium and in places overlain by landfill, between Mt Albert volcano and a ridge formed in alternating sandstones and siltstones. The hydrogeology of the area is complex with perched aquifers in compressible soils, cascading water levels in fractured rock aquifers, and discontinuous higher permeability units resulting in artesian water levels and groundwater springs.Numerical groundwater modelling was undertaken to assess the potential effects of tunnel construction and long-term operation on the groundwater system; the magnitude and extent of changes in groundwater level and the resulting potential for settlement, buoyancy effects, contaminant migration and adverse effects on creek base flow. Modelling also provides inputs to tunnel design such as groundwater seepage volumes and water pressures.The driven tunnel will be ‘undrained’ long-term so potential effects on the groundwater system are limited to short-term dewatering during construction. Significant project time and cost savings can be made if the portal areas are permanently ‘drained’, but this means potential effects are greatest in the long term condition.This paper summarises the investigations, implications of the complex hydrogeological setting on tunnel design and environmental assessments, and groundwater modelling undertaken during the planning stage of this project. The groundwater modelling has been used to incorporate mitigation options in tunnel design and construction sequencing; a comprehensive monitoring program will be used to trigger appropriate responses should effects differ from those predicted.

There has been a substantial transition in the minerals industry R&D environment in the last five to ten years. Changes have occurred in the client and contractor base, the sources and scale of funding, industry imperatives, and competition and collaboration between contractors. These changes are documented from the viewpoint of research contractors in general, and universities and the JKMRC in particular.It is concluded that research groups need to be more proactive in managing their interface with the industry. Both industry and the research community m\lst devote the resources and attention necessary to ensure the effective transfer of research results into operations. The Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) has an important role in these processes, and in regulating the balance between contractor collaboration and competition.

Minimising dilution and ore loss is an important part of ensuring profitability of a gold mining operation. White Foil open pit gold deposit is a low-grade deposit and therefore managing ore quality is a high priority. Ground movement through blasting can displace ore and waste boundaries up to 10 m from their in situ location and therefore requires stringent ore movement monitoring and adjustment. There are currently only two options for monitoring blast movement – utilising visual targets (commonly lengths of polypipe) but this has widely been replaced by electronic blast movement monitors (or BMM). Regardless of the technology used, the basic principle is to compare the pre- and post-blast locations of the targets to determine the movement of the rock mass during blasting, which is then used to determine the final location of ore and waste boundaries.The Blast Movement Technologies (BMT) BMM system has been used at White Foil since June 2014. The system has been effective and reliable during that time; however, the annual cost of using the BMM system is greater than other monitoring alternatives. As such, the open pit geology team conducted a study comparing the BMM system against the conventional polypipe technique. The objective was to quantify the profit and loss that would occur based on the ore block transformations from both methods. Eight blasts were selected where polypipes were installed in additional holes adjacent to the BMM monitoring holes. The resulting movement vectors from the respective methods were used to create post-blast ore blocks by transforming the in situ ore blocks. While polypipe is a cheaper alternative, the BMM system tracks ore and waste boundaries more effectively resulting in better quality control, enhanced ability to minimise dilution and ore loss thus maximising profit. For these eight blasts, it is calculated that the BMM system resulted in A$664 978 extra profit through a reduction of ore loss. The total cost of a yearly BMM package was recovered in the first two blasts of this study. The primary reason for the difference is that polypipe had a poor recovery rate of 32 per cent compared with 92 per cent for BMM at White Foil. Therefore, the data used to transform the ore blocks was less representative, resulting in inaccurate post-blast ore block boundaries when using polypipe.CITATION:Watson, M E, 2017. Kambalda Nickel Mines (KNM) currently have eight operating underground mines, three on care and maintenance and other orebodies at various stages of development. Each operation differs greatly in scale, ore grade, milling characteristics and cost structure. The optimum number of mines operating at any one time and their level of production, within the constraints of mill blending requirements and overall mill capacity, is the key to maximising profit in a climate of fluctuating nickel price. Cost models are developed for each mining operation which relate ore tonnes mined to total cost per pound of nickel produced from that mine. Aggregating the mine cost models provides a composite cost model for the entire operation. The cost models provide the operating levels necessary for each of the mines and hence Kambalda as a whole, to operate at the lowest cost per pound of nickel produced. However, lowest operating cost does not necessarily lead to maximum profit. The level of nickel price above operating cost can dictate maximum profit positions which are contrary to the lowest cost position. In addition, the decision to temporarily shutdown mines or reopen mines in response to nickel price movements comes at a cost. In considering the optimum operating position, the price of production capacity flexibility needs to be taken into account. This paper describes the process used to assess all these factors in arriving at the optimum operating position for Kambalda Nickel Mines for varying nickel prices. The same methodology can be used by corporate management in managing multiple mine sites as well as mine management managing multiple orebodies or stoping blocks for maximum profit.

Segregation studies in ternary systems of glass ballotini, iron ore and coke particles (with size range of 1-8 mm in each) in filling and emptying a laboratory size Paul Wurth hopper are described. In-bin segregation is shown to be a function of the position in the hopper, the nature of the material and the feed composition. The in-bin results are correlated by the equation C = C0k, where C and C0 are the size compositions (wt per cent) in the hopper and feed respectively, and k is an experimentally obtained segregation constant. The results of now pallern measurements show that material discharges from the hopper according to the sequence; core now - wall now - scaffold now, where the latter represents stagnant material at the hopper wall that discharges last. Size segregation in the discharge stream from the hopper is shown to be a function of in-bin segregation and hopper now pallern. A method of predicting discharge segregation from these two sets of data is suggested. The results of the model studies are also compared with industrial data and these show satisfactory agreement. Discussion of the hitherto ignored effect of size segregation on hopper now rates, stoppages and other operating problems is also included.

Ore sorting has the potential to reduce the feed to wet plants and in the case of complex orebodies that can significantly reduce the water, energy and reagent consumptions and resulting operating costs for the project. The application of ore sorters has sparked renewed interest and application in the precious and base metals mining industry in recent years as a result of the continuing development of new sensing technology and very fast information processing that is making ore sorters applicable to a much wider range of ores and larger scale operations. The application of ore sorters involves a range of trade-off decisions that have economic impact upon the benefits of ores sorting to the project under consideration. Level measurement of underground orepasses is important. Orepasses are not only utilised to funnel ore to the shaft skip loading station but also as silos for storing of ore in order to smooth out ore flow in a shaft system. Safety and operational efficiency are also improved as proper orepass level measurement could prevent overfilling of tipping areas. A study was therefore commenced to determine alternative technologies available as well as identifying practical installations across the Anglo American plc Group. From an instrumentation perspective an orepass system is an extremely difficult environment to take measurements in. Factors like dust, vapour, interference, bridging, wear and physical installation have to be taken into account. The study discusses time-of-flight (ultrasonics, radar and laser) measurement techniques followed by other possible solutions. These solutions included strain gauge measurement, the æjumping monkeyÆ technique, radiotomography, fibre optics and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Finally, various South African suppliers have been approached in order to determine instrumentation that is available for orepass level measurement in the marketplace. These recommendations were verified, where possible, by visiting the claimed installations.

The Savage River open cut magnetite mine is located in rugged terrain in densely rain forested northwest Tasmania. The mine and concentrating plant are both in the Savage River valley. Pickand Mather Incorporated (PMI) operated Savage River as an open cut magnetite mine between 1966 and 1996. Acid rock drainage (ARD) was first noted in the last ten years of the operation, leading to elevated concentrations of heavy metals downstream of the mine. When operations ceased in 1996, PMI returned the mine to the Tasmanian Government along with a remediation fund of $11.4 million. At that time, the assessed cost of remediation was in excess of $120 million. As a result of the ongoing ARD contamination and to facilitate both a new operation and effective remediation, Goldamere Pty Ltd negotiated an agreement with the Tasmanian Government in 1996, which resulted in the Goldamere Act and the Goldamere Agreement. The agreement has allowed Australian Bulk Minerals (ABM) to remediate the Savage River mine in conjunction with the Tasmanian Government while re-invigorating a previously closed mine by providing ABM with an indemnity against past pollution. ABM can configure its mine and waste planning activities to maximise remediation benefits without fear of future litigation for past mistakes. The effect to date has been the development of a long-term strategy to remediate the Savage River and short-term remediation works such as water management, which provide benefits to the ecosystem. After five years, the Savage River is no longer significantly impacted by ARD for 30 kilometres downstream and trout are now reported within the reaches of the mining lease. The arrangements between ABM and the Tasmanian Government are an example of a genuine WIN WIN situation where co-operative environmental management of the site results in significant improvements and where the æregulatorÆ and the æminerÆ are working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals. The end result is a significant benefit to Tasmania.

Randgold Resources’ Loulo-Gounkoto Complex is one of the largest gold mining operations in Mali, West Africa. The mine, which is situated on the western border with Senegal, treats more than 4 Mt/a of ore through a conventional three-stage crushing and ball milling circuit followed by a carbon-in-leach plant. Ore supply is achieved by a combination of open pit and underground mining, with the majority of the ore supply sourced from the Gara and Yalea underground mines situated approximately 2 km and 6 km respectively from the gold plant.In 2011, Randgold Resources commissioned Golder Associates to perform an evaluation study for providing structural backfill to both the Gara and Yalea underground mines using the current gold plant tailings. The test work performed as part of the evaluation study concluded the need for a tailings cycloning and dewatering facility capable of producing slurry at a solids concentration of 65 per cent with a particle size distribution that had minimum 25 per cent passing 20 µm and less than 5 per cent of -5 µm material. Tailings desliming was required to ensure a consistent feed quality to the paste preparation plants and to ensure that the system would be capable of handling variation in the feed composition from the gold plant.WorleyParsons, previously TWP Projects, was contracted by Randgold Resources to complete the engineering design for the slurry preparation plant, whilst Golder Associates was retained to complete the engineering design of the two paste preparation plants.This paper discusses the test work, design considerations and engineering design of the slurry preparation plant, termed the ‘intermediate plant’, as well as all ancillary facilities required for the delivery of the deslimed slurry to the paste preparation plants located at the two underground mines.CITATION:Swanepoel, M, du Toit, G and Gillot, P L, 2014.
