The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia holds significant tonnages of detrital iron deposits. Formed by a cyclic weathering and eroding sequence of nominally barren banded iron formation, they may form rich proximal accumulations of iron cemented gravels distal from any obvious hard-rock iron mineralisation. While generally small, they nonetheless represent excellent economic targets as they are near surface and easy to mine. The relatively high density of iron detritals, when compared with their sedimentary hosts, makes the gravity method the primary method of exploring for these blind deposits. Identification of possible trap sites is used as a precursor to gravity surveying, with magnetics used as an ancillary method prior to drilling. Application of the gravity method in this terrain is not straightforward. Detrital trap sites are best developed next to the spectacular cliffs that form the range fronts to the Hamersley Ranges. Precise terrain corrections and use of first vertical derivatives are routinely applied to gravity data in an effort to map every possible gravity high that may reflect the presence of a detrital accumulation. Extensions to Hamersley Iron Pty LimitedÆs BS2D deposit were discovered by the routine application of gravity. This methodology has been used to create a model by which exploration for detrital deposits continue to the present day.

Computer-based block modelling of orebodies is now used at Renison Tin mine for the estimation of ore reserves. It is considered that this has resulted in improved reserve estimation for complex 'stratafault' orebodies. The results for all orebody types are more easily understood by the mine planning section and provide greater scheduling capability than those from the previous manual isoline reserve estimation method. A structural overview of the deposit can be gained by combining geological block models for the various orebodies. It is anticipated that upon completion of block modelling for all the orebodies the time spent on the annual ore reserve estimate will be significantly reduced.

After reviewing the various approach es,namely, empirical,analytical.observational and numerical, a logical systematic approach is proposed for the estimation of compressive strength of coal pillars. In this approach first,uniaxial compressive strength of coal in pillars is estimated,taking into account the size effect and the effect of discontinuities. Next,the compressive strength of coal pillars is estimated by determining the stress distribution in the pillar and the Bieniawski strength criterion. The results appear to be compatible to the ones obtained by Wilson's method. The traditional pillar design equations give improper answers for deep workings.

Haymont (2012) notes that in parts of Australia significant areas of mining disturbance cannot be relinquished. In Queensland it has been estimated that by 2010, just 0.3 per cent 507 ha of mining disturbance had been rehabilitated to the regulator’s satisfaction (Short, 2015).One reason for this poor record is the presence of inappropriate, unachievable or unmeasurable rehabilitation targets (Glenn et al, 2014; Butler, Anderson and Sexton, 2015). In the authors’ experience in Queensland many mature operations have licence conditions that hinder the achievement of sustainable outcomes or prevent successful validation of rehabilitation success. This creates a lack of certainty for industry and a lack of confidence in the community that the sector can deliver good rehabilitation outcomes (Short, 2015).This extended abstract presents a framework approach that has been applied at two contrasting operations. Without the changes presented, the goal of progressive rehabilitation certification, reduction in financial assurance (FA) and a path to surrender at these sites would have been impossible. Secondary microplaty haematite in its variety of styles and generations is the defining component of the high-grade banded iron-formation (BIF)-hosted iron ores of the world that are dominated by martite (M; - haematite pseudomorphs after magnetite). The term microplaty haematite (mplH) was introduced during the CSIRO-AMIRA 1976-1994 iron ore program, and was used to differentiate the then main export martite-microplaty haematite (M-mpl H) ore types of Tom Price-Whaleback and Paraburdoo (Paleoproterozoic), from the newly exploited, more prolific supergene martite-goethite (M-G) ores (Mesozoic-Paleocene) of the Hamersley Province that are now the major Hamersley iron ore exports.Morris (1980, 1985) suggested that the most important genetic factor that distinguishes the two main ore types was regional metamorphism of Paleoproterozoic M-G ores at temperatures normally related to diagenesis (ca 80 - 100°C). As temperatures increased, mplH grew in goethite both spontaneously as well as by nucleating on martite and other pre-existing haematite. Because the conversion of goethite to haematite involves a ~27 per cent reduction in volume, the crystals probably grew within microvoids of their own creation, with iron transfer through water resulting from the process itself, a local hydrothermal process requiring no introduced hypogene fluids.Barley et al (1999) and Taylor et al (2001) concluded instead that oxidation of introduced siderite in hydrothermally metasomatised BIF ‘protore’ resulted in mplH + ankerite by reaction with heated meteoric fl uids. This postulated ‘protore’, still preserved locally at Mt Tom Price, was described during the CSIRO-AMIRA program as local post-ore BIF metasomatic residuals. These new hypogene-meteoric concepts for M-mpl H genesis have formed the basis for a range of varying local and international models that currently dominate the literature of iron ore.No valid petrographic data supporting the hypogene-supergene modelling was found but petrographic images of goethite-related mplH growth in a range of different environments are shown.

The EnvIRONment process has been developed to treat steel works dust and organic wastes simultaneously. A pelletised feed is fed into a special DC electric furnace, the pellets becoming immersed in a molten slag above a carbon saturated bath. The iron oxide in the pellets is reduced and carburised whilst the organics are broken down to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour. Volatile metals are vapourised and collected in the baghouse. Over two years of trials in a 100 kg DC electric are furnace has brought the process to the stage where it is ready for commercialisation.

During the last few years the quality requirements on roads and railroads have become more accentuated due to the desire to minimise maintenance costs. This has, in turn, led to increasing requirements in the preparation of ballast materials and pavement aggregates. As the access to natural gravel in northern Europe is decreasing (due to lack of availability or by law restrictions) the use of crushed rock material is becoming more and more important. The aim of this paper is to derive and describe a universal method for the prediction of particle size distributions from compressing crusher machines such as jaw- and cone-crushers. Based on a closely defined physical model, expressions which define the size reduction process are derived. Conditions for simplifying assumptions are clearly outlined. The choice and mix of breakage functions is a central subtopic iò the analysis of the crusher machine processes. Known breakage functions are reviewed and evaluated. A new concept for determination of a true breakage operator which is related to physical properties of the crusher device and the size distribution of the feed material is introduced. Finally experimental tests are compared to numerical calculations. The method described in the paper can be a useful tool when designing crushing plants or when optimizing the output of compressing crusher Machines.

Planning for flooding and assessment of flood impacts are important requirements for mining projects, as they are also for other types of development. With more intense development and concern from the community, supported by government regulatory requirements, assessment of flood concerns and impacts has become of increasing importance. To ensure that flooding issues are fully understood and results presented in an appropriate format, advanced hydraulic analysis procedures have been developed and are beginning to be applied. These procedures must be rigorous in an engineering context but the results must also be readily understood by the community and government agencies. Advanced two-dimensional hydraulic modelling is becoming accepted as an important means of assessing flooding issues for mining projects. With presentation of results from hydraulic models with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), flood impacts can be analysed rigorously and presented clearly. This paper discusses the application of advanced hydraulic modelling in the planning and impact assessment of a major mining project located on a floodplain where there is extensive inundation. The analysis provides for both input to the planning of the project and for detailed assessment of potential impacts. This case study illustrates some important aspects of the application of hydraulic modelling using a two-dimensional modelling to a critical flood design.

Elastomeric compression gaskets for segmental tunnel liners are capable of fulfilling all sealing requirements for one pass constructed tunnels.Once the segments are mounted and the gaskets are compressed the watertightness of the tunnel is guaranteed at once and for the whole technical life time.The only prerequisite for effective sealing is that tolerances in the tunnel segments be kept within reasonable limits.

Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. For many years the mining industry at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, was carried on with just sufficient attention to underground ventilation and hygiene conditions as to keep pace with necessity. However, the campaign against industrial diseases in other mining centres (notably South Africa) some years ago, brought the subject more prominently before local mining engineers.Throughout a period of several years, gradual improvement has been effected, and at the present time industrial hygiene is considered an essential part of the production operations of the various companies.In June, 1918, a move was first made by the Board of Trade advising an inquiry respecting the health of employees engaged in the metalliferous mining industry in the State of New South Wales. At the end of that year, a recommendation was made to the State Government by the Board of Trade that a Techni.cal Commission of Inquiry be appointed to examine and report upon the dust conditions of the metalliferous mines at Broken Hill. Following this a second report presented in 1919 made specific recommendations in respect to the scope of such a Commission. A Technical Commission of Inquiry was accordingly appointed and arrived in Broken Hill to inquire into the prevalence of miner's phthisis and pneumonoconiosis in the mines. Early in March, 1920, the examination of all mine employees commenced, and the work was completed in June, 1920. As the mining industry looks to new technologies for a safe work environment and increased production rates, so should emergency response teams when dealing with organisational incidents. Implementation of technology has transformed the nature of incidents within the international mining community with lower frequency, high impact events replacing high frequency, low impact incidents of the past. In turn the approach to mines rescue response and preparation has naturally diversified. New rescue technologies when applied effectively can only further advance preparation and the response of mine rescues teams. This paper discusses some of the changes associated with mines rescue as the industry embraces technology. It highlights some recent rescue responses and their approach and gives examples of some of the new technologies being used for improved mines rescue.

THE Sulphide Corporation's works for the smelting of ores containing lead, gold, and silver are situated close to the Cockle Creek railway station, on the main Northern railway line, and are about 95 miles from Sydney and 10 miles from Newcastle. A branch line runs to the works, and siding accommodation and bins are provided for expeditiously handling all ores sent for treatment. The Corporation also possesses wharfage facilities at the port of Newcastle, where consignments of ores arriving by sea can be handled direct into railway trucks for conveyance to the works.The greater portion of the ore treated at Cockle Creek comes from the Corporation's mine at Broken Hill, but a large quantity of other grades is also purchased and treated.

The current methodology for delineating and subsequently evaluating coal reserves is based on the use of vertical drill holes and surface based geophysics/geology. These techniques have three major problems, these being respectively:-a) Vertical drill holes can only provide a small sample of the coal seam and stratigraphy. Therefore the planar variation in coal reserve and environment parameters can only be approximated.b) Although surface based geophysics has had its fair share of success in recent years, there are still environments which have masked the finding of major structures.c) Access to drill sites is difficult at some locations due to mountaineous terrain, standing water and environmental impact.

Major cities are not only the focal point for AustralianÆs work, leisure and homes, they also are the focal point for the flow of resources into the built environment, motor cars and transportation and urban consumables. The steady increases in æstockÆ and waste generation, in line with GDP growth, means that cities will become the mine sites of the future if the inherent value is recovered from these materials at end of life. The urban waste stream can be characterised as containing approximately nine per cent hydrocarbon-based materials; 57 per cent biomass-based material; 28 per cent fully mineralised materials that are inert, five per cent metals and less than one per cent of problematic materials that are potentially hazardous and toxic. In order to convert these wastes into value added inputs into the economy, a number of technological interventions are required. These æurban waste mining techniquesÆ revolve around source separation and material streaming. One issue that needs to be overcome when determining which mining technique to implement, is identifying the option that will deliver optimal value, both from a financial and a sustainability perspective. The difference between embodied energy and calorific value is a case in point. Highest net resource value (HNRV) is a concept that can assist in choosing between different resource recovery options. The assessment can be done at a strategic level, or can be used to work out material specific issues. For example, used tyres can be recovered for their energy content at an approximate cost of $120 per tonne, whereas mechanical processing of used tyres can deliver a net benefit of $192.

HoistEM is a helicopter-towed time domain electromagnetic system. This paper presents details of the towed array structure (the Hoist) as well as a description of the instrumentation. A comparison between HoistEM and ground TDEM (from which HoistEM was derived) is given. Over 50 000 line kilometres of HoistEM have been completed to date and datasets for structural mapping, nickel, base metals, manganese, ground water and bathymetry are presented and discussed.

A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.
