The Prospect to Pipehead Tunnel is a component of the Sydney Water Board's multi-million dollar Drinking Water Quality Program to improve the quality of Sydney's potable water supply to meet revised national health guidelines. The tunnel project involves the construction of seven kilometres of 3.9 metre diameter machine bored tunnel which is to be lined with a three-metre diameter steel liner. The paper describes the fully integrated planning and design approach and management technique used to enable this major project to proceed to meet the requirements of a tight construction program.

The economic feasibility of controlled district cross-cut recirculation is examined in this paper with particular reference to the most important mine ventilation network parameters. An algorithm is developed to express the annual cost of recirculation which is then compared to the annual cost of conventional ventilation using the University of Queensland Experimental Mine as a case study. The concepts of resistance ratio and volumetric efficiency ratio are introduced and used to analyse the economic feasibility of controlled recirculation within a mine ventilation network.

The sequence of development and back analysis of the failure of a spoil pile in the 1B pit of the Moura Mine are given. The mode of failure was a two-wedge mechanism with a basal slip plane passing through a clay band about 2 m below the pit floor. Remedial actions for improving spoil pile stability are discussed.

Organic carbon is a major ore contaminant at MMG’s Century mine. This carbonaceous matter is associated with shale hosted sphalerite mineralisation. It occurs as elongated lamellae and as inclusions in porous sphalerite aggregates which are fine grained and difficult to liberate from sphalerite. The carbon prefloat circuit was designed to remove the liberated organic carbon in order to mitigate excessive reagent consumption, contamination of the lead and zinc concentrates and poor flotation performance in the primary zinc circuit. The consequence of organic carbon removal is that sphalerite and galena minerals are lost to the prefloat concentrate. A Jameson Cell was installed in late 2005 as a prefloat cleaner cell. Operational experience showed that the cell became capacity limited during periods of high amounts of organic carbon in the feed and was subsequently bypassed.Reactive style operating strategies were implemented to manage the effects of insufficient organic carbon removal by the prefloat circuit but due to the relatively large circuit residence time, upstream changes meant hours before the downstream circuits were stabilised following a disturbance from excess carbon.This paper describes the modifications and testwork undertaken to enable the Jameson Cell to be operated during periods of high organic carbon in the float feed and the implementation of process control initiatives to proactively remove the required prefloat mass from the float feed to eliminate the reactive style operating strategy.The process control modifications centred on dynamically targeting a prefloat mass recovery determined by an equation relating the carbon to zinc ratio to the carbon prefloat mass as a percentage of the float feed. The equation was developed by analysing historical data. These improvements served to optimise the prefloat circuit and consequently stabilise the downstream lead and zinc circuits.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the mining and processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. The audits described in this paper involve working with site personnel to develop and implement major improvement projects, providing advice on how to improve environmental practices and facilities, and disseminating innovative ideas and practices across the site and to other operations within the same group. Essentially the lead auditor assumes the role of a æskills coachÆ as opposed to a æpolicemanÆ, which is quite often the case for many audits. The audit process has been developed from involvement with a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years and more recently, with a metalliferous mine in the Northern Territory. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided. The auditing process as described is applicable to metalliferous mines, the processing of mineral ores, coal mines, coal handling and preparation plants, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

Gipronickel Institute JS that is a Research and Development Centre affiliated to the worldclass Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company, and Outokumpu Technologies AB (Boliden Contech AB) have jointly developed the reconstruction project of Pechenganickel metallurgical operations using a two-zone Vanyukov furnace. The international expert group appointed by the Nordic Investment Bank has examined the project. The project financing should be partly executed by the Norway government. Current annual rate of sulfur dioxide emissions is 100 000 t. The aim of the project is to reduce it to 12 000 tpy. Pechenganickel Combine is owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel. Currently it produces nickel high-grade matte from sulfide copper-nickel concentrate with up to ten per cent MgO content. The existing production is in accordance with the following flow sheet: agglomeration û electric furnace smelting with matte production û converting in horizontal converters. Annual production capacity is about 36 000 t of nickel in high-grade matte. Converter gases report to sulfuric acid production. The principal results of studies on high magnesia materials smelting in two-zone Vanyukov furnace, engineering solutions, and technical and economical parameters are offered.

How do you portray a large structurally and stratigraphically complex deposit to return a meaningful resource estimation, and produce a geological model that is useable for planning on a daily basis? The George Fisher Mine is located 22 km north of Mount Isa and forms part of XstrataÆs Zinc Group operations. It is currently a major producer of zinc, lead and silver in the region with an estimated total resource for all categories of 127 Mt at 100g/t Ag, 5.3 per cent Pb and 9.2 per cent Zn (June 2005). Production in 2005 totalled 2 647 492 wet tonnes for 317 699 kg Ag, 140 317 tonnes Pb and 230 331 tonnes Zn from underground operations. George Fisher (GF) consists of two deposits that are structurally complex on a mine scale, George Fisher North (GFN) and George Fisher South (GFS). Regional faulting has resulted in a 2 km long package of variably pyritic shale and siltstone that separates the deposits. This paper looks specifically at GFN. Distinct correlations exist between the two deposits based on stratigraphic matches; however, orebody characteristics, geometry and fault architectures differ significantly between the two. The deposits consist of multiple, sedimentary-hosted, stratiform orebodies from 2 to 25 m wide, separated by waste intervals of variable width. Each ore-waste interval is modelled as an individual geological domain. Structurally, George Fisher North (GFN) contains a series of major late-stage NE faults with dextral offset(s) of up to 130 m. Further complexity is added by NS, NW and NNE striking fault orientations that can produce either a loss or repeat of stratigraphy, local drag folding, orebody attenuation and block rotation. Due to this structural complexity and orebody offsets, domains at GFN are further divided into fault blocks (FB). The GFN model comprises eight FBs over a strike length of 1 km, all of which are modelled independently. As drilling progresses and additional resources are converted, further FBs will be added at major fault offsets to accommodate orebody and model expansion. This will be in addition to what is already a large and time-consuming data set to manage and update. For example, each FB has 18 domains each with two constraining wireframes (hanging wall and footwall). Each wireframe has several sets of point data depending on the type of data available, ie diamond drilling, mapping or interpretation points. This equates to over 1100 separate files to manage. Additional wireframes and files are also required for major structures, daily planning requirements and block model runs. In total some 1500 files are managed, updated and maintained for GFN alone. The ongoing need to expand as a business and optimise production in the current economic climate where there is a global demand for metal has led to an increase in production at GF. This has resulted in a rapidly growing data set and highlights the importance of practical and efficient modelling to achieve a meaningful resource estimate. This paper focuses on the geological modelling, modelling approaches and techniques employed for the GFN deposit.

The use of geophysics in mineral exploration in Australia, and overseas, has increased dramatically over this century. This paper shows that using simple equipment with clever interpretation that the foundations of modem geophysics were laid, using all the same principles. The plethora and diversity of mineral exploration geophysical techniques does not allow a full description of their evolution to be given in such a paper. To convey this evolution, however, the progress of two different geophysical methods, magnetics - a potential field (passive) method, and electromagnetics - an electrical (active) method, are described. Examples of magnetic survey data from the 1920s and more recent vehicle home and airborne surveys are given to show the increase in data quality through technological improvement. A set of four airborne electromagnetic data sets spanning three decades is used to indicate the improvement in electromagnetic techniques. It is argued, that considerable progress is still required in the electromagnetic field to increase its interpretability.

This paper describes how Brisbane-based PanAust Limited develops process control strategies that are implemented at all operations and are used in functional descriptions for plant upgrades and new projects.The process control strategies are determined by operating management philosophies designed to maximise returns from the company’s assets.The approach is endorsed in the project planning and design phases to ensure facilities and equipment that form the major production assets are fit for purpose and capable of enabling the production managers and operators of the projects to maximise shareholder returns.PanAust’s process control approach has been to develop sets of process control standards which focus on two key areas. The first area covers hardware requirements and architecture, software objectives, control models and individual loop tuning methods. The second area defines control room layout, graphic standards and the alarm philosophy. The application of these standards in a new plant or upgrade decreases the time required to achieve design capacity and optimal performance.The PanAust process control strategy changes the operator’s role from one that controls a number of individual loops to one that sets the control objectives of the processing plant. To achieve optimal performance, all the process areas of the plant are analysed to identify opportunities to improve throughput, recovery and stability. Once a key opportunity is identified, a process control strategy is developed which defines the objective of the control, its functionality and how an operator will interact with it. After development of the control model the operators assist engineers to test and debug it. Traditionally, the Lead Lode at Broken Hill has been represented on presentation plans, cross sections and diagrams in scientific papers as a solid black mass, around which the more 'interesting' and 'structurally useful', wall rocks appear to wrap. Structural analysis of the Broken Hill orebodies has usually turned to these wall rocks to determine the structural history of the mineralisation.This tendency to represent the orebody as a massive single entity is incorrect and the aim of this paper is to illustrate that sulphide orebodies (in this case Lead Lode), are a dynamic part of the mine stratigraphy. They can preserve a great deal of useful structural information that can be recorded with detailed internal mapping.Three main categories of ore type are recognised in Lead Lode; Stratiform ores, Mobilised ores and Metasomatically altered ore. The ore types in these categories occupy or have formed in distinct structural and stratigraphic positions and have clearly recognisable inter-relationships.

The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. As such, we outline the reality of stakeholder landscape preferences, and present a critical response to current planning practices within the life-of-mine (LOM).CITATION:Hine, A and Erskine, P, 2016. The excavation of a tunnel through rock and mixed ground of basalt and silty clays presents a challenge to engineering organisations. Such was the situation facing the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) in constructing the 15.3 km, 5.5m dia. tunnel component of the new Western Trunk Sewerage System. The tunnel geology showed that there were two distinct components to the excavation - rock and mixed ground. By drawing on extensive experience in the use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's) used previously by the MMBW and using techniques developed for predicting TBM per- formance, a comparison of the options of drill and blast versus TBM was made. The conclusion was that TBM methods would provide the best solution to the problem. Tenders were called for the supply of a TBM. A performance specification was used to attract tenders offering designs which re- flected the state of the art on an internation- al level. Particular features required by the MMBW were included in the specification. The excavation planning and operation are described in this paper. The production achieved has shown that the TBM can very adequately handle rock excavation (best weekly production 167.9m). Extreme conditions of mixed ground with heavy groundwater inflows have been handled using an auxiliary thrust system to maintain gripper reaction through the soft ground encountered.

BHP's newest colliery on the Southern Coalfield Is Tower Colliery. It is situated near Wilton some 60 kms south west from Sydney. It commenced its operations in 1978 and since that time has experienced considerable roof problems. In its eight years of operations, production has been 936 687 tonnes to December 1985. To a certain extent this is a reflection of the ground control r,,b1cros present in the colliery. paper out Iines the signif mt g,, logical features that are known to exist in the colliery and their influence on roadway development. Faulting has hindered the mine's development and an igneous intrusion has had outhursting associated with it. The prevailing roof rock has also had an impact on the roadway conditions. The paper will look at intersection deformation in present workings. Extensometers have been installed in these areas and provide measurements to verify visual observations. The results show a significant increase in roof movement as the roadway is developed from a single heading, to a T-intersection and then Into a four-way intersection.

The performance of the Renison tin concentrator was assessed in detail for two arrangements of the three available ball mills. With two mills used for primary grinding and the third for regrinding table tailing, the concentrator recovered 65.3 per cent of tin in the three tin concentrates produced by tabling, vanning and flotation at a calculated overall grade of 37.5 per cent tin prior to batch dressing. In the second arrangement one mill was used for primary grinding and two mills for separate regrinding of table tailing and sulphide concentrate. The metallurgical effective- ness of the change was somewhat obscured by unintended changes,i.e. an increase in the assay of the fresh feed from 1.38 per cent to 1.1+6 per cent tin and unresolved changes in the sulphide rougher flotation and tabling. However, using the results from a detailed size by size analysis of the behaviour of ore components in appropriate parts of the plant, it proved possible to show that, had the two unintended changes not occurred, up to 5 per cent

The Water Delivery Alliance (WDA) was established to design, construct and commission the pump station and desalinated water delivery pipeline to link the desalination plant on the Kurnell Peninsula (constructed by others) with the existing distribution network at Erskineville, Sydney, Australia. The WDA consisted of McConnell Dowell Corporation Ltd (Macdow), Bovis Lend Lease Pty Ltd (BLL), Kellogg Brown and Root Pty Ltd (KBR), Worleyparsons Ltd (WOR), Environmental Resources Management Group Inc (ERM) and Sydney Water Corporation (SWC).Sydney’s Desalination Project is one of the initiatives to secure Sydney’s water supply against the effects of climate change, population growth and drought. The desalination plant, 100 per cent powered by renewable energy, can supply up to 250 million litres of water per day (mld), which is up to 15 per cent of Sydney’s water needs. The project involved the construction of an 18 km pipeline with an ultimate capacity of 500 mld to accommodate any future increase in the output of the desalination plant.The Alliance procured three full-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) from Herrenknecht AG to construct the 6.5 km of tunnel that would provide a conduit for the DN1800 welded mild steel cement mortar lined (MSCL) pipeline at a number of locations along the route. Nineteen shafts and 16 tunnels were required to complete this work.Crucially one of the TBM drives involved construction of a tunnel into Botany Bay under protected marine life habitats; enabling the connection of the MSCL water carrier pipeline into the dredged section of pipeline underwater, approximately 800 m off-shore in Botany Bay.This paper details the retrieval of the 17.4 m long TBM from the ocean floor upon completion of the Botany Bay tunnel allowing for subsequent use on the Project. Elements covered in the paper include the 835 m tunnel, design and construction techniques for the tunnel and recovery, and details of the methods used to install the DN1800 water carrier pipeline.

Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The results of the study show that if the tailings storage facility influence the water quality of the rivers, this effect is not significant, so that the prevailing parameters of the measured parameters were within the permissible standard of drinking water in Iran.CITATION:Rashidi Nejad, F, Naraghi, S and Pirouznia, N, 2018. The behaviour of tailings under cyclic loading has an impact on the stability and deformation of tailings dams and a good understanding of the cyclic behaviour of the tailings under earthquakes is important for tailings engineers and tailings operators for the design and safe operation of tailings dams. This paper presents an investigation into the cyclic behaviour of tailings using both laboratory cyclic direct simple shear (DSS) testing and numerical modelling. The laboratory testing involved cyclic DSS tests on gold tailings and zinc-copper tailings under different loadings and loading frequencies. The gold tailings specimen tested at a higher loading frequency and a higher cyclic stress ratio experienced spontaneous liquefaction during cyclic shearing and the zinc-copper tailings specimen tested at a lower loading frequency and a similar cyclic stress ratio exhibited ductile behaviour and liquefied due to cyclic mobility. The liquefaction behaviour of the tailings was modelled using an advanced constitutive model (UBCSAND), which was developed specifically to model soil liquefaction and strain softening under cyclic loading. The constitutive soil model presents the nonlinear soil behaviour under dynamic loading using a hyperbolic stress-strain relation. Dynamic analyses were carried out using a finite difference program FLAC. The cyclic stress-induced excess pore water pressures measured in the laboratory were modelled using numerical simulations of the laboratory tests under different loading conditions. The results of the non-linear dynamic analyses demonstrated the capability of numerical modelling of cyclic shearing induced excess pore water pressure and the onset of the spontaneous liquefaction. The laboratory investigation and numerical modelling technique provided the key properties and parameters for the dynamic analyses to assess the stability and deformation of tailings dams under design earthquake events. More importantly, the laboratory tests and numerical modelling provided some insights into liquefaction behaviour of the tailings during earthquakes. CITATION:Li, A, Laxman, M and Jinto, H, 2018.
