An increase of 22 per cent in lead usage is expected in the European Union by 2050. During lead refining, the Harris process is a critical step in which a salt melt is used to remove arsenic, tin and antimony. During this process, the caustic salt melt absorbs these impurities, requiring regular evacuation before saturation. Current metallurgical practices for: 1) determining the end point of the lead alloy involve time-consuming sampling and offline analysis, and 2) determining the end point of the caustic salt melt are based on subjective visual observations by the operator. In the context of Industry 4.0 concept, automating these processes becomes desirable, as smart sensors systematically collect real-time data in an unbiased manner. This research focuses on monitoring the Harris refining process using objective methodologies. Two different methodologies are investigated. The first methodology focuses on electrical conductivity changes of the caustic salt melt as function of Sb content. For this study, synthetic and industrial samples are used. A lab-scale electrical conductivity set-up was built to accommodate the aggressiveness of the salt melt. Initial findings suggest a promising relationship between electrical conductivity and Sb content in the caustic salt melt. Although the results are preliminary, the study provides valuable insights by enabling real-time measurements. The second methodology focuses on measuring the electromotive force (EMF) in lead doped with Sb at pilot-scale. Multiple probes are reevaluated for their effectiveness in Sb measurement. Ultimately, a partially stabilised MgO probe with Ni as a reference, without cardboard and copper protection caps, yields promising results. A correlation between EMF and Sb content is observed. However, repeatability issues arise due to possible wire interference at low temperatures. The results underscore the potential of advanced measurement techniques in optimising lead alloy production within the context of Industry 4.0.

The first mining in Western Australia probably commenced some 40 000 years ago when Aborigines arrived and began quarrying stone for tools and weapons, and ochre for decoration. The earliest documented mining by European settlers took place in 1850 on a small lead vein in the bed of the Murchison River, reported by the explorer A C Gregory. However, it was the discovery of gold in the Kimberley region in 1885 that first drew wider attention to the State's mineral potential.

We operate a 50 cubic metre per hour mobile alluvial tin mine on small scattered deposits in the Irvinebank area. Wash is loaded by a Cat. 950 front end loader into the bin of a screening section and screen undersize is pumped to a separate jig unit. Both units are rubber tyre mounted and are shifted once a month when the haul distance gets to about 150 metres. The shift takes about 8 hours.The screening section is sited close to the face with a ramp for dumping in and a one metre drop for the screen oversize which is removed by the loader.A reciprocating plate feeder with variable rate hydraulic drive, feeds wash onto a horizontal 1.2 metre x 2.2 metre two deck Kinergy screen. Minus 10 millimetre undersize is pumped by a Warman 6/4 sand pump with a 37 kW variable speed Reeves Motordrive to the jig unit.The jigs are placed 20 to 70 metres away so that tailings will run back into previously mined ground. Reject stone is used to impound the sand and mud, allowing the water to filter through and return to the feed water pump.An MTE trapezoidal module is used as a primary jig. Hutch product is pumped to an eight cell clean-up jig which we developed ourselves along MTE lines. It has a trapezoidal shape and sawtooth stroke provided by cams. Clean tin is taken from the first four spigots. These consist of clear plastic tubes fitted with taps so that there is no water loss except when the tin is drawn off. Fine concentrate from the last four spigots is put over a curvilinear table which sits on a steel base packed with earth.

In response to the increase in consumption of galvanised steel for automobiles in the last decade and the problems associated with remelting larger quantities of galvanised steel scrap, a process is being developed to separate and recover the steel and zinc from galvanised ferrous scrap. The zinc is dissolved from the scrap in hot caustic using anodic assistance and is recovered electrolytically as dendritic powder. The dezinced ferrous scrap is rinsed and used directly. The process is effective for zinc, lead, and aluminum removal on loose and baled scrap and on all types of galvanised steel. The process has been pilot tested for batch treatment of 900 tonnes of mostly baled scrap. A pilot plant to treat continuously loose scrap, with a design capacity of 48 000 tonnes annually, has been in operation in East Chicago, Indiana since early in 1993. The first 450 t of scrap degalvanised in the pilot plant have residual zinc below 0.01 per cent and sodium dragout below 0.01 per cent. Use of degalvanised steel scrap decreases raw materials, environmental compliance costs, and opportunity costs to steel- and iron-makers. Availability of clean degalvanised scrap may enable integrated steel producers to recycle furnace dusts to the sinter plant and EAF shops to produce flat products without the use of high quality scrap alternatives such as DRI, pig iron, or iron carbide. Recycling the components of galvanised steel scrap saves primary energy, decreases zinc imports, and adds value to the scrap. The quantities of zinc available by the year 2000 from prompt and obsolete automotive scrap will approach 25 per cent of zinc consumed in the major automotive production centres of the world. Zinc recycling from galvanised steel scrap, either before or after scrap melting, will have to be Implemented.

Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

This paper presents a waste rock treatment and rehabilitation program conducted at a metaliferous mine site in northern New South Wales from 2000–2013. It updates findings from 2005 for Program #1 (which examined acidity, leachable metals and tree growth in a control and three treated areas of waste rock) and includes new results for Program #2 (which examined acidity, plant uptake of metals and trace elements and tree growth in a control and four treated areas compared to undisturbed background levels) and Program?#3 (which examined the treatment and revegetation of submerged mine tailings and an exposed tailings beach).Program #1 showed low soil pH in the control area remained unchanged from years 1–14, and soil pH in the limed and capped areas was initially increased but fell back to starting levels within 12 months and remained low for 14 years. In contrast, soil pH in the Terra B area resulted in soil high pH immediately after treatment and increased in years six and 14 without further treatment. Tree height and density in 2005 and again in 2013 indicated acidity in the control, limed and capped areas suppressed tree height and density; however, in the Terra B area, revegetation in 2013 was comparable to undisturbed forest. Outcomes in the control, biosolids and three Terra B areas in Program #2 were similar to those observed in Program #1.Program #3 showed the submerged and exposed tailings initially had low pH and high concentrations of total and leachable metals before treatment, but these became non-leachable after treatment with Terra B. Revegetation was achieved on the tailings beach, with almost uniform colonisation of bulrush and common reed, along with bottlebrush and golden wattle; a variety of reptiles have also been observed on the revegetated tailings beach, along with migrating ducks, spoonbills and grebes.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Scutts, T, ?2014. The beneficiation of fine coal has been the major problem facing the coal preparation engineer in recent years. The influence of clay slime, particle size and reagent type are but a few of the many factors that affect the recovery of fine coal. Laboratory test work has indicated that substantial increases in recovery could be achieved by improvements in technology in all these areas. Unfortunately, in most cases this technology has not carried through to the operating plants.

A new approach to more reliably predict the Ni (and Fe, Mg) composition of Ni laterites was tested for RC samples from the (siliceous) oxide–style, Siberia North deposit, Kalgoorlie Nickel Project (KNP), in the north-eastern Yilgarn (WA) using partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis of diffuse reflectance spectra over the 380 - 2500 nm wavelength range with a multi–element chemistry data set. PLSR cross-validation models were developed to predict FeO, MgO and Ni contents in composite samples with bulk composition limits of >0.08 wt per cent Ni and <6 wt per cent MgO. Calibration and validation models showed a strong, linear trend for predicting FeO and, to a lesser extent, Ni content, whereas PLSR models for predicting Mg content were less reliable. This reflected the prevailing mineralogy and associated element deportment within the oxide laterite profile. For example, Fe and Ni distribution is controlled by relatively few minerals, predominantly goethite and, to a lesser extent, the Fe3+-bearing smectite, nontronite. Magnesium is associated with a range of Mg-bearing minerals, some of which are compositionally complex (eg serpentine, talc, chlorite, smectite and carbonates). Magnesium chemistry alone does not reflect the varied mineralogy of samples with relatively high (5 - 6 wt per cent) MgO contents, which can be spectrally distinct. Hence, samples with similar Mg contents, though comprising Mg-bearing minerals with distinct reflectance spectra, were difficult to model (eg smectite versus Mg-carbonates). The findings of this study demonstrate that characterisation of Ni laterite composition may be achieved as part of routine logging of either drill chips or diamond drill core using PLSR analysis, but that a detailed understanding of the mineral-element association is essential for reliable predictive analysis. This has particular relevance to characterising the geometallurgy of Ni laterites, especially where deposits may be classed as the same type, but have distinct compositional and mineralogical differences.

This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers. Over the years there have been occasional references in the literature to the activating effect of cyanide in galena flotation with xanthates. These have usually been associated with the processing of lead-zinc or copper-lead-zinc ores. Bubble contact curves for the pure galena-xanthate system show a flotation edge at pH 10.4 independent of sodium cyanide concentration which was thought due to hydroxyl ion, not cyanide ion.Flotation tests were conducted on samples of Mount Isa lead-zinc ore using varying concentrations of sodium ethyl xanthate and sodium cyanide. At low collector concentrations, galena recovery kinetics improved with sodium cyanide addition, and the higher the cyanide concentration, the higher the galena recovery rate. At higher collector concentrations, galena recovery rate was independent of sodium cyanide addition.For a given collector addition, the lead grade-recovery curve shifted to an improved position with increasing sodium cyanide level. For the same recovery there was an increase in the lead grade with increased sodium cyanide addition, and this increase was most dramatic at high sodium cyanide concentrations.The presence of sodium cyanide during the grinding of Mount Isa ore caused surface passivation of the iron sulphides and possibly the sphalerite.These sulphides, therefore, reacted with less of the oxygen present in the pulp, hence more oxygen was directed to the surface of the galena. This resulted in an enhancement in the total amount of xanthate adsorbed on the galena that is reflected in the improved flotation response of that mineral.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine is being developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km northeast of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners, road-headers and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumped down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.   PRCL faces significant challenges to achieving the goal of cost effective production. The remoteness, high rainfall (greater then 6 metres per year on average), temperature variation and restrictions on access to this subalpine environment have driven the project to develop some distinctive solutions. These include the establishment of survey control in such a difficult environment with vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, significant vegetation and steep slopes by using helicopter survey, aerial photography and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerial survey. PRCL has also commenced designing the placement of the main ventilation fans in an underground chamber in the stone drive.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. Freeport IndonesiaÆs DOZ (Deep Ore Zone) mine is scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining methods and will have a number of major improvements when compared to previous block cave mines in the district. The DOZ will have an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system than in previous underground mines in the district. This paper will describe the mine plan, haulage, and ventilation systems, and compare them to those used in other operations in the district.

"Based on solid simulation material research, the simulation conditions for methane and coal solid-gas coupling were obtained using solid-fluid coupling theory. Using sand as the aggregate and paraffin and oil as the cementing agents, a material suitable for solid-gas coupling simulation was developed. A permeability testing instrument was also developed, and the compressive strength, brittleness parameters and seepage velocity of material were tested with different aggregates. The results showed that as the paraffin content increased, the compressive strength of the material increased but the permeability decreased. The oil removed the drawback of intensely changing material compressive strength. By setting a different ratio of aggregate to cementing agent, it can simulate rocks with different strengths and permeability. Applying the material to a mining simulation experiment revealed a relationship between methane seepage velocity and overlying strata movement. By extracting pressure relief gas from Shanxi Tianchi coalmine drainage, the authors found that the mining fissure zone was a storage area of pressure relief gas, and a gas drainage system can be placed to achieve good results. With the progress of modern mining engineering, one of the features of which is the mining from greater depths and the hoisting of greatly increased loads, it becomes a matter of increasing importance that the engineer should be able to determinewith some degree of precision the character of the strains on the hauling rope. But a wire rope is a complex structure; it is made up of spirally-twisted strands, which in turn are composed of spirally-twisted wires, and it is not particularly easy to say exactly what happens when this "doubly-twisted structure is wound round a drum or over a pulley.. The difficulty has been generally evaded in ordinary practice by the simple device of adopting a large factor of safety for the rope-usually from 8 to 10-a factor which experience has shown is sufficiently large to cover the bending strains set "up when the rope is passed over pulleys of the sizes commonly considered appropriate.When, however, we add the stress due to the bending of the rope to the stress produced by" the direct pull, we find that the actual factor of safety is usually more nearly 4 than 10, and frequently the bending stresses in the rope are so large compared with the simple tensile stresses that their neglect may easily lead to disastrous results when dealing with problems a little out of the common run. Common Empirical Rules.-It is always "recognized that the bending of a wire rope round too small a pulley is likely to do the rope serious injury, but as it is desirable in ordinary winding operations to reduce the inertia of the moving parts to a minimum...

A metallurgical evaluation of the Argyle Kimberlite No. 1 (AKl) orebody has been carried out using a 40 tonnes per hour pilot plant. Pilot plant results, together with laboratory investigations provided a basis for the determination of process design criteria for a major treatment plant. Various sampling programmes were carried out to determine specific aspects in the evaluation of diamond liberation. Treatment parameters such as the top crush size, recrush size and the bottom cut-off size were investigated. A description of the pilot plant is given together with the design criteria for a 3 million tonne per annum treatment plant

During late 1953 and early 1954, tests were carried out in Sydney metropolitan brickpits in order to determine if some improvement might not be effected in the personal shock, fly rock and possible ground displacement accompanying daily blasting occurrences in the numerous quarrying activities of the metropolitan area. As a result of this preliminary work (Reid, 1954), the Department of Mines decided to further investigate the problem with a view to placing this type of blasting on a sound economical and safe basis for both operator and nearby residents alike. To assist in the work, a Cambridge Universal vibrograph was acquired.Human safety was the first consideration followed by property damage to homes and factories in the extractive areas. Although most of the actual field work has been confined to the Sydney metropolitan area and in particular to the large clay-shale quarries, many cities and country towns have blasting problems associated with the extractive industries, engineering projects both above and below ground level, and in building excavations to which the results may apply.The following figures illustrate how much activity of this type is located around cities and towns:Sydney Metropolitan Area:

Woodlawn Mines began underground operations in 1986. At the time of going underground it was envisaged that there would be no 'contract' payment to the underground employees. This was a relatively unique step to make, especially as most major underground mines in Australia relied heavily on the contract system to motivate their workforce. (Obviously with varying degrees of success.) Woodlawn faced the task of motivating their employees through a multi-skilled system with a great emphasis on leadership and a genuine care for their employees. The 'proof of the pudding' is that Woodlawn has not lost any time over industrial issues since beginning underground operations in 1986. To achieve success in any operation the organisation must not only be advanced in its management principles but also be prepared to be innovative in the way it deals with physical problems, ie ground control, equipment selection and maintenance. Difficult ground conditions at Woodlawn have necessitated the deployment of two Cabolt Jumbos and the construction of cost-effective shotcrete systems. The shotcrete system now being built has been tested in a prototype form and is proving to be a safe and simple way to manage weak, low stress friable ground. Although the ground at Woodlawn has low stress component by virtue of the fact the ore can have a density of 4.5dm3, cable dowelling has become a necessity. The two cable dowel jumbos install high quality reinforced cables. The pressure of 'production' means that these machines must be consistently available for use and the training of maintenance personnel and operators ensures that a maximum of cable dowels can be installed over any given time span. In any modem mine ventilation is a primary concern and the major area of concern comes from the vehicles themselves. In our recent replacement for the standard 'Toro' loader, three engine options were considered. A relative newcomer to underground mining was accepted. The Detroit 60 series (DDEC) engine came with a great reputation and has lived up to this. The engine has an electronic management system that reduces particulates to a hardly visible minimum, provides great amounts of engine power and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 45 per cent. The operational benefits of such an engine are worth sharing through this conference.
