Space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is becoming available over much of the world, includingNew Zealand. Radar imagery has a number of very advantageous features, including all-weather capability; it also has artifacts, such as layover, which require processing before these data may be used to best effect.   This paper gives an outline of SAR, details the image processing required, and discusses the use of the first New Zealand Japan Earth Resources-1 SAR data to aid geological mapping on the Coromandel Peninsula.

This paper presents the near-field rock damage owing to production blasting in limestone quarry in the western region of Japan. The study's purpose is to learn the mechanism of crack development due to blast vibration. In this study, blast vibration's magnitude was expressed with peak particle velocity (PPV) which was obtained based on seismographs recorded database. In attempt to pursue a research's purpose of this study, there were two considerable interests: near-field blast vibration propagation and prediction, and crack observed and prediction. Furthermore, with regards to considerable interest of the study, there were three essential aspects which were challenged, such as: monitoring and interpretation of seismic wave propagation in a rock mass near large explosive charge of production blast scale, measurement of blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole, and determine critical value of PPV which may produce significant rock damage. In order to determine precision critical PPV, understanding correlation between rock damage with vibration level is firstly important to be done. This paper also discusses how to measure, detect and quantify near-field blast vibration and blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole.

This paper discusses various issues surrounding the metallurgical control for furnaces, especially focusing on processes with long time-constants and æmetallurgical memoriesÆ. Examples will focus on furnaces accepting particulate and sometimes ill-defined feeds, eg submerged-arc furnaces, blast furnaces, secondary scrap smelting operations, recycling operations, waste incinerators, etc. Generally, because of the usually higher metallurgical time constant of these furnaces, these reactors have to be controlled in a feed-forward manner by the use of a hybrid of æblack boxÆ or empirical and ægrey boxÆ semi-empirical first principles metallurgical modelling and simulation techniques in a supervisory metallurgical control capacity.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. The Bega granite at Whipstick, N.S.W., consists of a granite metasomatically altered to leucogranites and a spessartite-granite. The ore occurs in pipes controlled by jointing and shows evidence of post-depositional tectonic forces.The principal ore minerals are molybdenite and bismuthinite, with minor amounts of uraninite, pyrite, gold, bismuth, joseite A, joseite B, tetradymite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and skutterudite. The gangue minerals are microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, and spessartite, with fluorite, chlorite, magnetite, and biotite as accessory minerals.The intrusion of granite was followed initially by ascending metasomatic fluids which penetrated along joints to be trapped in the domed roof of the intrusion to form the leucocratic granite. Iron-manganese-rich fluids metasomatically altered the granite to a spessartitegranite which is associated with the later deposited ore.Quartz veins and dykes of varying composition post date the ore deposition.

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

The global shift towards decarbonisation is driving competition for the extraction of critical minerals such as nickel, lithium, and copper. To meet this demand, new mines are being developed while mines approaching closure are being reimagined as sites of potential resources. This reimagining challenges how mine closure is being conceptualised. In the conventional case, when a mine reaches the end of its economic life, it is closed or put into care and maintenance until it transitions to the next land use, such as agriculture, native ecosystem corridors, solar farms or integrated eco – precincts (Murphy et al, 2019; Holcombe, 2020) (the authors acknowledge that unplanned mine closures have left a devastating legacy of contamination, safety and cultural heritage impacts). Extracting minerals from closed or closing mines will extend mine life and, therefore, delay relinquishment and transition. In this context, innovative technologies are needed to make mining economically viable. In the first year of her doctoral research on improving stakeholder engagement in mine transitions, Lee Zhi Yi has coined the term ‘mine life extension technologies’ (MLETs) to describe a class of technological solutions that optimise extraction of resources after a mine reaches the end of its economic life. Examples of MLETs include agromining (van der Ent et al, 2015), in situ recovery (Robinson and Kuhar, 2018), and reprocessing or reuse of tailings (Gou, Zhou and Then, 2019). MLET extraction offers several benefits compared with conventional mining processes, such as waste remediation, value recovery of minerals, a smaller footprint and less environmental impacts (Sellers, Picorelli and Salmi, 2022). What requires further investigation is the consequences of MLET implementation to host communities or community perspectives towards the proposed technology and subsequent delays in transition.

Although these earths were actually weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. The Ni-laterites are a special class within the broad laterite family.

During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.

Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

It is proposed that a waste rock dump be constructed on slopes consisting of soft colluvium and weathered Chim Formation mudstone at the Porgera Gold Mine, in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Geolog- ical, geomorphological and geophysical investigations were conducted in support of geotechnical studies to assess the physical character of the 6km2 site. Geomorphological studies focused on the extent and nature of colluvium cover and landslide activity. Detailed ground traverse mapping resulted in classification and delineation of eight terrains and seven material types. Seismic refraction and resistivity profiling, combined with drilling, provided subsurface data. Results were presented as standard profiles, coloured contoured sections and plans. Subsurface features, including deep colluvial channels, buried cliffs, slump blocks and buried alluvial channels, were identified. Results of the combined investigations allowed designers to model the colluvium/ bedrock surface and identify critical areas of deep, mobile colluvium and weak bedrock. A design approach was developed which accounted for the morphology of landslide systems and distribution of colluvium types.

The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. The ready solubility of gold in dilute aqueous solutions of the cyanides of the alkalies or alkaline earths provides a convenient method for the separation of the precious metal -from the large surplus of associated materia1. The finely ground ore is pulped with a weak solution of cyanide, agitated to dissolve the gold, filtered and washed. The lowgrade filtrate is then clarified and the gold precipitated by some electronegative agent, the most usual being finely divided zinc or zinc dust. The slight precipitate is collectedon some form of filter coated with a filter aid, the filter cake being then known as "gold slime".A typical analysis of this slime is given in Table 1.

The rocks of Waihi and the surrounding district are almost entirely rhyolitic and ande5itic in character. Sedimentary rocks, with the exception of some surface deposits of clay loosely compacted conglomerate, etc., and one or two thin and broken beds of a very poor lignite, occasionally changed by igneous agencies into a bituminous coal, are almost absent. In the shafts sunk by the Waihi and Grand Junction companies outside the outcropping andesitic area of the Martha Hill, more than one old surface or lake bottom has been passed through. At these points layers of sand, consolidated volcanic mud and tuff, accompanied by numerous broken fragments of imperfectly silicified wood have been enccuntered, but these occurrences may, for the purpose of this paper, be neglected.The youngest rock of the district are rhyolites, probably of Pliocene age. At least three distinct classes of rhyolitic lava, each possessing features of unusual interest, may be made out. None of these, however, is gold-bearing. The youngest flow, a light-coloured, fine-grained rock, is remarkable owing to its enclosing at times fragments of carbonised wood, varying in size from mere specks up to quite large pieces of almost pure charcoal. The Australian gold industry has made large steps forward in the last few years. This progress has been driven by improvements in mining and processing technology, the high price of gold and by a favourable legislative, political and taxation environment. This paper concentrates on improvements in gold project development, process engineering and technology as seen by BHP Engineering, Perth, Australia. The paper describes technical aspects of successful gold project development including metallurgical test work, feasibility studies, choice of process flow sheet (gravity, heap leach, carbon in pulp (CIP), carbon in leach (CIL) or other routes). It sets out our views on plant design, plant construction, procurement and project management. A case study for a small plant recently completed in the Philippines is presented as a solution to the problems often encountered in treating quartz vein gold deposits.

Australia’s ageing population means that by 2050 there will be 2.7 people of working age to support each Australian aged 65 years and over compared with five working people per retiree today and compared with 7.5 in 1970 (Swan, 2010). This means that there is going to be a greater demand on social services – for medical and aged care – from a smaller private income base. How will this gap be met? Australia is fortunate in that it has vast resources of mineral wealth; from iron ore, nickel and gas in Western Australia to the giant copper and uranium deposits at Olympic Dam in South Australia.The prospect of a meaningful profit based tax on this vast mineral wealth has been lost through Australian government’s handling of the issue in 2010 and with an industry fiercely opposed to the prospect of a mining tax. Hence, new ways of thinking are required. This paper looks at the issues facing the implementation of a novel scheme whereby Australia leases the mineral resources it extracts and thus derives income over the decades the metals are in-use in pipes, wires and structures with a premium paid for unreturned material or that used in dissipative applications. Applicable minerals could include copper, aluminium, nickel and rare earths. If Australia simply digs up and sells the metals once, the buyer becomes custodian of that resource and they benefit from controlling the future ‘above-ground’ resource stock.A complementary driver for a leasing scheme is the increasing importance of chain-of-custody following initiatives of the Responsible Jewellery Council with gold and diamonds, now with the potential to extend across commodities. The Australian minerals sector could thus position itself as a premium supplier with high social and environmental credentials.Recognising the implementation challenges, this paper includes a review of how such a system could be enforced to ensure that the metal is tracked throughout its life. It concludes with a discussion of the rates and terms should such agreements hold and suggestions for institutional arrangements for enforcing compliance.
