It has long been known that closed circuit grinding with a classifier improves grinding efficiency, reduces unit specific power consumption, and reduces over grinding. The classification device removes material from the circuit that has reached the desired size and returns coarse material back to the mill for further grinding. The efficiency of the classifier is an important factor in the overall performance of a grinding circuit. The classifier affects the capacity of the grinding circuit and the metallurgical performance of downstream operations. In this paper, an analysis is made of the present situation in the Chinese steel industry and its demand for iron ores. It is shown that the demand for iron ores has been growing substantially with the rapid development of the steel industry all over the world, especially in China. However, the iron ore market is currently in the situation where supply exceeds demand due to the economic crisis, with more investment in mines and less output of steel for several years ahead all over the world. Gigantic pressure is confronting the Chinese steel mills due to the too high and irrational price of iron ores. It is time to return the price of iron ores to a normal position much closer to their value. More attention has therefore been paid to developing low-grade and complex iron ore resources in China due to the irrational price of imported iron ores. More innovative mineral processing processes have been developed to tackle these complex resources. A systematic introduction to the development of beneficiation processes for low-grade iron ores is provided, including upgrading low-grade siderite, limonite, micron sized haematite and magnetite resources.

Projects must be flexible to account for the rapid development of new technologies and changing stakeholder expectations. Coupled with calls for bleeding-edge solutions, customers, shareholders, and regulators demand robust, safe products and systems-of-systems. Developing and integrating these solutions is becoming increasingly complex and maintaining the flexibility required to ‘pivot’ to effective solutions can be a serious challenge. The necessary flexibility is fundamental to the Agile ethos, and this family of methodologies therefore offers a potential solution to this challenge (Beedle et al, 2001). These have traditionally been delivered with systems engineering applied through a Waterfall methodology. Agile Systems Engineering combines both approaches and presents a means to achieve these goals without compromising flexibility, quality or safety. A robust methodology for the application of Agile Systems Engineering is required to enhance practical outcomes and reduce risk for real-world mining projects.

The potential for adverse surface settlement during tunnelling in soil and rock poses a significant risk to the successful completion of any tunnelling project. Undesirable ground movement may lead to unacceptable level of damage to surface infrastructure, buildings and the environment, resulting in safety concerns as well as causing significant delays and costs to a project. One of the empirical methods which is commonly used to predict surface settlement in the early stages of a project’s development is the volume loss approach as described by Mair, Taylor and Burland, 1996. This method was developed for use in soft ground; however it has also been applied in weathered and soft rock to provide an initial indication of potential surface settlements along a proposed tunnel alignment. This paper presents some initial thoughts on the use of this method in weathered and soft rock and the associated limitations which need to be taken into consideration when interpreting the results. Increasing fuel prices, unavailabilty and high prices of tyres have imposed tremendous challenges for large open pit operations. Carajßs open pit mines, one of the largest iron ore projects in the world, has been particularly affected due to the high amount of giant trucks operating in this site. On the other hand, environmental constraints push the mining industry towards reductions in fossil fuels, noise and waste generation. As a feasible response to these requirements, an alternative mining method for open pit mining, aiming to reduce or even eliminate the need for trucks has been developed, based primarily on coal opencast continuous operations. This innovative approach for open pits involves the replacement of trucks by fully-mobile crushers, bench conveyors and ramp conveyors. Two different applications have been developed for exploiting waste and ore at Carajßs largest pit, named N4E. To make it possible, mine planning paradigms should be replaced leading to new conceptual design of open pits. This paper shows two case studies (waste and ore conceptual design) carried out at Carajßs mines to anticipate and put forward the future of open pit mining, proving that our industry would be greatly affected by this new way of exploitation, reducing thousands of tons of fossil fuels. Productivities can be enhanced and environmental performance greatly improved. In this approach mine automation can be easily implemented reducing operating costs and man's fatigue.

Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

The Ban Houayxai mine (BHX) is a relatively low-grade, low-cost, open pit gold-silver deposit in Laos operated by Phu Bia Mining, a subsidiary of PanAust. The ore production rate at BHX is 4.5 Mt/a, with direct tipping to a semi-autogenous grinding/ball mill circuit with a carbon-in-leach process plant. Approximately 100 000 oz of gold is produced per annum.The operation is located in mountainous terrain with minimal run-of-mine stockpiling. This results in limited capacity for blending from stockpile, with the mill instead reliant upon direct feed ex-pit. Since commissioning in 2012, the plant has seen significant variation in milling rates due to variability in the feed properties of the oxide, transition and primary ores. As part of an ongoing continuous improvement program, an integrated approach was initiated, focusing on maintaining and enhancing production in the future as the proportion of harder primary ore increases. This will specifically focus on direct blending from the loading face using the ore properties and blast fragmentation to maintain mill throughput.This approach was based on the concept of physical assets management, commencing with improving information and knowledge of the condition of the orebody through modelling the characteristics, variability and performance of the feed for processes relevant to throughput. These models are used to support both mine and process plant production planning.The key ore feed characteristics and parameters modelled for the life-of-mine are blastability index, powder factor, crushability or impact resistance and grindability. These predictive spatial models were based on the data from diamond drill holes used in resource definition and geotechnical drilling programs by integrating geotechnical, geological, geochemical and metallurgical data.At the early stages of implementation, the models are being utilised for ore blending decisions to provide guidance and support for budgeting, long-term mine planning, blast design for mill feed and providing the mill with an expectation of performance.CITATION:Jackson, J, Gaunt, J and Astorga, M, 2014. Traditionally, quality control of iron sinter has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry. However, the mineralogical composition that defines the physical properties, such as strength or reducibility, is not monitored.X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in combination with Rietveld quantification and statistical data evaluation using partial least squares regression (PLSR) has been successfully trialled to determine the mineralogical composition and process parameters such as the FeO (Fe2+) content and basicity of iron sinter within an analysis time of less than eight minutes per sample. The results were compared with wet chemistry data.PLSR does not require pure phases, crystal structures or complex modelling of peak shapes. The analysis is therefore easy to set up and ideal if only one property needs to be analysed. PLSR results show an accuracy for the FeO content of ±0.3 per cent for the samples analysed in this case study.Both the PLSR and Rietveld methods take the full XRD pattern into account and can be simultaneously applied on the same measurement. PLSR was found to be the more robust method if only FeO and basicity results are required. The Rietveld method helps to predict other parameters, such as the compression strength of the sinter, by monitoring all existing phases (eg larnite C2S or silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium phases).CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2015. A reliable scale-up procedure for column flotation must address three important areas of column design, ie column geometry, sparging system and wash water distribution network. The column geometry is dictated by the maximum froth carrying capacity (which determines column diameter) and the bubble-particle attachment rate and particle retention time (which determines column length). The most important factor in the scale-up of an air sparging system is the ability to produce small bubbles in both laboratory and full-scale columns. Other factors, such as energy consumption and maintenance requirements, should also be considered in the scale-up of bubble generators. It is also important to design a wash water distribution system that can properly control the froth stability and maximise the column throughput. Based on these criteria, a successful scale-up example is given.

AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

Rio Tinto Alcan has undertaken feasibility level assessments into the expansion of its bauxite mining operation in an area south of the Embley River in far north Queensland. The project has the potential to extend their Weipa operations by approximately 40 years.The construction and operation of two additional mineral ore processing plants are proposed for the South of Embley project. Golder Associates was engaged to develop and conduct modelling assessments of potential sources of water supply required by mineral ore processing.Two models were developed using GoldSim: a dam yield model and a water balance model. GoldSim is a graphical object-oriented modelling environment with a capacity to carry out dynamic probabilistic simulations. Originally developed by Golder, GoldSim has been applied successfully in a decision support role to a range of mine water management operations.The dam yield model was used to provide estimates of reliability and volume of annual water supply of several potential surface water dams. This information was then used to determine a hierarchy of water supply options for processing plant operations. The water balance model dynamically simulated the water demands of the two production plants and the consequential response in water supply, with respect to the timing and discharges provided by the various source options.Use of the model provided a preliminary operational tool to assist with water supply management decisions. Water quality issues required a blending of water from separate sources and attention paid to scheduling to ensure water supply through the dry season. The model also helped identify risks to water supply in the event of underperformance of one or more water supply sources. NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. It is predicted that underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin will have a significant rise in heat problems as mines aim to increase production, depth of extraction and length of longwall panels. At an actual Bowen Basin mine, extended longwall panels greater than 4 km in length are planned to be mined at depths with a virgin rock temperature (VRT) of more than 40¦C. Research has been completed into the reasons for the substantial increase in temperature at the face for underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin. An analysis into heat loads produced at the Bowen Basin mine for the development and production phases shows a significant amount of additional cooling will be required to ensure safe working temperatures. All of the major sources of heat, which included both natural and mine induced heating, were considered for the analysis. Maximum heat loads were assessed, together with peak intake surface temperature to determine the maximum cooling capacity required at a Bowen Basin mine. These maximum heat loads were assessed for a specific longwall panel, Longwall A, which extends to over 4.1 km in length and at a maximum depth of over 330 m, resulting in a VRT above 40¦C. The cooling system positional efficiency was analysed, determining that underground cooling via an indirect heat exchanger was preferred to increasing the capacity of the current bulk air cooling (BAC) on the surface. This paper deals with the modernisation of the brakes on an electrically coupled Blair multi-rope hoist and covers the removal of the old calliper brakes and hydraulic control system, and its replacement with brake discs, disc braking units and hydraulic control systems. The paper covers the braking requirements of the hoist, which is made up of two electrically coupled single-drum hoists, together with the theory behind the choice of brakes and control systems supplied. The paper also covers the project logistics that were required in order to install and commission the new brakes and control systems with the minimum disruption to production on the only rock hoist on a major production shaft. Items covered include the modifications to civil works, pre-installation of bearing lubrication systems, brake discs and hydraulics and the interfacing of the new hydraulic control system to the existing electric control system. It had to be designed to be compatible to a new electric drive and control system due for installation at the end of 2005.

The Cayeli volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit is located in Black Sea region of Turkey. Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri (CBI) was formed as a joint venture between Inmet (Canada) and Eti Holding (Turkey). CBI is processing complex copper/zinc sulphide ores. The Cayeli concentrator was commissioned in 1994, with a design capacity of 600 000 tonnes/year. The grinding circuit was a classical rod mill/ball mill combination. The rod mill was converted to a primary ball mill in May 1997. The reasons for conversion were to use mill power more efficiently and eliminate feed interruptions during rod charging. The grinding circuit now has a primary ball mill in open circuit, and a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Classification was originally done in two stages with hydrocyclones. Both mill discharges were combined and pumped to a primary cyclopack having two, 500 mm diameter cyclones. Primary cyclone overflow was pumped to a secondary cyclopack for further classification. The secondary cyclopack had ten, 200 mm cyclones. Both unit underflows were fed to a secondary ball mill by gravity. The secondary cyclone overflow, typically 62-64 per cent passing 36 ¦m, at around 42 per cent solids (w/w) was fed to flotation circuit. In order to increase circuit capacity to 1 000 000 tonnes/year and to improve control over the grinding circuit, it was decided to convert the classification circuit from two stage to one stage. For this purpose, six Warman Cavex cyclones having 400 mm diameter were installed. Now, the combined primary and secondary ball mill discharge was classified in single stage with the Warman cyclones in closed circuit with the secondary ball mill. The cyclone overflow goes directly to the copper rougher circuit as flotation feed. The grinding circuit is producing a flotation feed of 70 per cent passing 36 ¦m. The change over to single stage classification at Cayeli was successful. A mill throughput of 1 000 000 tonne/year is being achieved with better control over classification, and improved grind size. Results and comparison between the two classification circuits are presented in the paper.

Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

Following civil war in Sierra Leone, London Mining Plc obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. The Sierra Leone Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by a few companies since the 1930s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the preceding operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960s. There are two virgin ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings accumulated from previous operations. The Marampa tailings operation (Phase 1a) is being implemented first with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mt/a in a Phase 1b. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Further expansion (Phase 2) that includes the development of the virgin deposits is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production. Outotec partnered with London Mining to develop the magnetic separation flow sheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa tailings (haematite) material. The flow sheet development process started with sample characterisation and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flow sheet configuration, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, demonstrates the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit for iron ore tailings.

Gold at Renco occurs in association with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and quartz and is confined to a series of brittle fractures and fault breccias (reefs) preferentially developed within an anastomosing ductile shear zone. During late Archaean crustal movements both the orebody and the enclosing host rocks were deformed within a series of east-north-east striking, southerly dipping, shear zones. The reefs within these shear zones are now texturally different to those away from the shear zones, and this difference is reflected by differences in the way the gold is distributed in the two reef types. These differences are not taken irto account by the software package currently being used to generate kriged plans of gold grade and reef thickness and this may explain some of the inaccuracies found in these plans.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage.
