In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. The Broken Hill deposit is located in Australia in the far western region of New South Wales. The deposit was found in 1883 and has been mined continuously since its discovery. It is considered the largest lead, zinc, silver deposit that has been discovered in the world and originally contained around 340 Mt of ore at a grade of around 12 per cent lead, ten per cent zinc and 150 g/t silver. The material remaining in the deposit represents only a fraction (perhaps ten per cent) of the original resource. Several of the world’s largest mining companies can trace their origins to the Broken Hill Field. The remaining resources on the CML7 consist of two large lower grade resource lodes that have not been subject to mining, some scattered areas of zinc lode material and the pillars and remnants of the main lead lodes.The deposit occurs in metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill Group a division of the Willyama Super Group contained within the Curnamona Craton. The Broken Hill Group rocks have undergone multiple phases of deformation. Metamorphism is granulite grade with major shears cutting through the deposit having been retrogressed to mica schists. The deposit lies in an antiform associated with the second phase of deformation.The resultant proposed mine is situated on Consolidated Mining Lease 7 (CML 7) which occupies a strike length of 3.6 km in the central part of the 7.8 km long footprint of the orebody. Underground mining on CML7 ceased in 1975 with surface mining of silver chlorides in the weathered zone continuing until 1991. CBH Resources has been continually working to define and evaluate the remaining resource since 2002. This work has included four surface drilling programs, two underground drilling programs, an exploration decline, enormous amounts of compilation of historical data and detailed three- dimensional (3D) modelling of historical mining and the resource lodes. It is currently planned to commence production at the Rasp Mine in late 2011. The operations will produce from previously unmined lodes and from remnants and pillars.This paper primarily aims to encapsulate the processes involved from information acquisition through to resource estimation and also to highlight some of the challenges encountered and the specific techniques and practices used to overcome them. Many of the experiences at Broken Hill are applicable to all brown field sites.

In order that the processes seen may be followed in their proper 'order, the subject will be dealt with as follows, (1) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines; (2) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines Smelting Works; (3) Broken Hill Mines; (4) Concentration at Broken Hill; (5) Smelting and refining of Lead, Silver, and Gold at Port Pirie. The first acquaintance with the copper region was made at the Yelta shaft and dressing mill of the Parramatta Copper Mines Co. at Moonta. The country rock at Moonta is a hard, tough, felsitic porphyry, the copper lodes having a general strike of N. 30° Kilipping from 500 to 70°. This necessitates shaft-sinking on the lode, and underlay shafts are the rule on the field. The ore is raised in the Yelta shaft in wheeled skips, and consists of ·chalcopyrite, bornite, pseudomorphic hematite, containing, in addition, molybdenite and tourmaline. The ore from the bins at the brace is passed over a grizzly; the over-size is hand-picked into smelting ore, concentrating ore, and waste rock (00 attle ), which is sent below for filling. The under-size is elevated to a trommel having in. holes. The over-size falls on to a picking belt made up of lengths of rope strapped with iron, working over wooden pulleys.

Equipment and people are commodities purchased with money.The focus of this approach is MONEY. The equipment and people, and the use of them, determines the amount of money that can be generated. In this approach people are motivated by financial concerns. The harder the times the more money becomes the focus.

High intensity stirred milling using the IsaMill has been the enabling technology for many projects by transforming the economics of fine grinding and simplifying circuit design. IsaMill grinding technology was originally developed for large-scale grinding to P80 sizings of 7 ¦m. The IsaMill is a high throughput, high efficiency mill that produces sharp product size distributions in open circuit configuration. The ability to grind in an inert environment, using a wide variety of media types, can give further metallurgical and economic benefits. The high energy intensity results in a small footprint that enhances the ability to distribute grinding power throughout the circuit, applying grinding energy to the minerals that need it. Recent scale up developments in IsaMill technology have enabled the benefits to be extended to large-scale conventional grind sizes, until now the domain of ball and tower mills. This paper will examine the crossover of IsaMill technology from ultrafine applications into the more conventional grinding area (P80 20 - 150 ¦m). Scale-up developments in IsaMill technology that have enabled this are reviewed. The upcoming commissioning of a 3.0 MW M10,000 IsaMill, the most powerful to date, grinding to P80 55 ¦m at PPL in South Africa will be discussed, as will the recent commissioning of a 2.6 MW M10,000 IsaMill at Kumtor. Recent testwork at McArthur River, where an IsaMill is being considered as an addition to the primary grinding circuit to replace the current tower mill will be reviewed. The potential combination of HPGR and IsaMill to transform concentrator grinding economics will also be discussed. Large-scale IsaMill technology has the ability to transform circuit design and energy efficiency for both coarse and fine grinding.

The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

Net solar radiation is one of the key factors affecting evaporation from soil covers on waste rock dumps. While net solar radiation is normally taken as a uniform parameter over a site for modelling purposes, there can be significant variation in the radiation actually received on various portions of the dump. These variations are a function of the difference in the cover slope and direction of exposure. A predictive model has been developed to calculate the actual radiation received on the dump surfaces, based on the net radiation data measured at a weather station on a horizontal surface. The model has been designed for application at any mine site in the world, and can be used in conjunction with evaporative flux models to help estimate the effect of three-dimensional variations in the cover surface exposure. The waste rock dump at Equity Silver site (located in British Columbia, Canada) has a barrier-type soil cover system to limit oxygen entry and water infiltration. This cover has been monitored for the past nine years. The new net solar radiation model has been applied to this site and the predicted net radiation was compared to the values of actual net radiation measured on the site. The predicted variations in net radiation over the three-dimensional surface of the waste rock dump have been applied to calculate spatial variations in potential and actual evaporation (or evapotranspiration) from the site. Preliminary analyses indicate actual evaporation from a site at this latitude could vary by a factor of two for exposed versus shaded slopes. The implications of these variations for the site are considered.

On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.

With the continuing move towards digital signal based control and measurement, it is inevitable that such technology will be increasingly employed on remote sites. The benefits of increased metallurgical performance, of reduced energy and manpower requirements far outweigh the problems associated with high technology in remote locations, provided that the installation is well thought out from both technical and manpower viewpoints. The new accessibility of vast quantities of process data will uncover previously unthought of savings and profit opportunities but brings with it the responsibility to carefully design the data presentation methods. The resulting changes in installed hardware will force changes in the maintenance and engineering workforce and will affect even the stores and purchasing department methods.

The Kanmantoo copper mine is located in the Adelaide Hills area of South Australia and is owned and operated by Hillgrove Resources (HGO). The mine is a drill and blast, truck and shovel operation mining sulfide (chalcopyrite) ore located in chloritised andalusite biotite schist. The initial Kanmantoo open pit operation occurred in the 1970s, before falling copper prices closed the mine. In 2010 the mine was reopened by HGO and the Kavanagh cutback of the Kanmantoo pit was undertaken. The Spitfire, Nugent and Emily Star satellite pits were also mined through to 2015 before the latest steep wall Giant pit design was developed to take mining out to 2019.There are no major fault structures and only two significant shear zone structures exposed in the open pit walls. The main Garnet Andalusite Biotite Schist (GABS) unit is quite competent so the pit designs have therefore mainly been controlled by four distinct joint sets. This paper is a case study on the influence of the joint regime on the wall stability of the main GABS unit and how a better understanding of the joint regime and the use of rock reinforcement has allowed the steep wall design to be adopted.The paper also describes the remote geotechnical mapping and slope monitoring techniques used to manage the rockfall risks associated with the steep walled slope design.CITATION:Hutchison, B J, Chambers, J, Gannon, S and Oko-oboh, D, 2017. Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. The combination of catchment overbank samples and partial analysis technique has been shown to be effective at locating the source of gold anomalies from initial low-density continental and regional surveys.CITATION:Mann, A, Davidson, A and de Caritat, P, 2013. Risk exposure in tunnel projects is extremely high due to various factors such as variability of subsurface conditions, selection of inappropriate design and tunnelling methods, improper risk assessment on adjacent surface and subsurface structures and utilities, and inadequate contractual practices. The risks in tunnelling must be borne by the contractor, designer and the owner of a tunnelling project. There have been a number of improvements in the last ten to 15 years in the manner in which tunnel projects are developed and implemented in terms of their design, construction, financing and operations. One significant improvement has been the manner in which underground conditions and their risks are being managed. Owners are less willing to transfer the full responsibility to the contractor for managing the underground conditions, although this is a familiar manner in which underground major urban projects have been previously contracted and managed. The owners of tunnel projects in Singapore have advanced the risk management process for their projects through geotechnical interpretative baseline reports (GIBRs), geotechnical data reports (GDRs) and project specifications (PSs). This paper discusses industry practice and its development as well as the application during the preparation and use in Singapore on the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) and the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) project in Singapore. The DTSS trunk sewer is 48 km and ranges from 3.3 m to 6 m finished diameter up to 50 m below the ground. The underground conditions ranged from Old Alluvium, strengths of about 1 MPa to competent Bukit Tima granite, with strengths of over 230 MPa. The total route length of the MCE is about 5 km. About 3.6 km will be constructed underground, consisting of dual five-lane carriageways. The underground construction will be cut-and-cover, and 2.6 km will be constructed about 13 m underground, and 1 km of tunnel will range from 13 m to 24 m as the tunnel passes under a 420 m wide reach of Marina Bay, whose crossing will be constructed as a two-phase cofferdam.

A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. Variable bench heights, interaction with underground workings and a steeply dipping orebody are challenges faced daily by geologists at Xstrata Zinc’s Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) Zinc/Lead/Silver mine in Mount Isa, Queensland.BSOC has been in operation since late 2004 and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Zn/Pb/Ag mineralisation mined in the underground lead mine. To date many large scale stopes and extensive development drives have been intersected and successfully mined. The stratigraphically hosted orebodies strike in a north-north westerly direction, dipping ~75° west. Ore production from the pit is currently at 4.5 Mt/a.Historically, sampling was conducted using a multiple spear technique from blasthole cuttings. This method proved to be relatively reliable when blasting benches at a consistent height, but a requirement to vary bench heights to safely collapse and then mine through underground workings reduced sample representivity to unacceptable levels.The purchase and commissioning of a production rig which had been converted for reverse circulation (RC) has allowed for the flexibility of a small rig, with the capacity to easily drill 48 m holes while ensuring sample quality. Sample quality is not the only benefit of introducing RC grade control. By collecting grade control data well in advance, informed decisions can be made by planning, drill and blast and mining departments weeks beforehand, rather than hours before firing. Additionally, seeking operational value to offset higher drilling costs has proved positive with benefits including increased confidence in orebody wireframes, accurate tonnage and grade for proceeding five benches along with the ability to representatively test metallurgical response on a tight grid spacing.

Structural Controls Interpretation of regional aeromagnetics, radiometrics and satellite image data has identified three structural domains (fig 2): The Fairyland Domain: a general N - S structural trend. The Cracow Domain: a general NW - SE structural trend. The Bald Mountain Domain: a general N- S structural trend. Known mineralisation is confined to the Cracow Domain in which there occurs two major NW - SE trending fault zones. The Cracow Fault Zone (CFZ) and the Immy Creek Fault Zone (ICFZ). Enhanced detail of the CFZ (fig 3) shows three main structural trends within it: NW-SE structures which include the mineralised White Hope South fault zone and the Golden Mile fault zone. NE-SW structures which have an influence on mineralisation in the Orange Creek, Fernyside and Golden Plateau areas. N-S structures comprising several major structural zones.

A 4-component model for settling slurry pipe flow has been previously described by Wilson et al (2006) and Sellgren et al (2014) to predict pipeline friction loss (hydraulic pressure gradient) over a range of slurry compositions: from fine to coarse particle size, narrow to broad particle size distribution, and low to high solids concentration. The method applies a weighted average of established pipeline models for various settling slurry flow regimes, according to the volume fraction of solids falling within the applicable size range for each model. Further development of the model was undertaken by Visintainer et al (2017a, 2017b), based on a comprehensive set of laboratory tests in 203 mm (8 inch) and 103 mm (4 inch) pipelines, and it was also adapted to the modelling of slurry pump performance derates. However, this work was all performed with solids having a specific gravity near 2.65, as is typical for many mineral processing and dredging applications. The goal of the present work is to test the applicability of these models for settling slurries having a higher solids specific gravity, as may often be seen in the mineral processing of iron ore deposits. To that end, a test program was carried out in a 103 mm (4 inch) pipe loop using various compositions of an iron ore product having a solids specific gravity of 4.75 and containing both coarse and fine solids. By screening and flushing operations, a range of particle size distributions were created having different proportions of the coarse and fine elements. In all, 19 tests were performed with d50 particle sizes ranging from 50 μm to 3.2 mm and delivered solids concentrations from 10 per cent to 43 per cent by volume. Particle size distributions varied from very narrow to very broad, with d85/d50 ratios ranging from 1.75 to 26. Pipeline pressure gradient and pump performance data were collected and used to test the applicability of the previously developed 4- component models and to propose improvements to the models for the handling of high-density solids.

With the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities related to haul truck accidents, this research investigates technologies and intervention strategies for improving worker training using a virtual environment (VE). Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this research specifically focuses on training workers in preshift inspections of haul trucks to avoid preventable defects from causing worker injuries and expensive equipment damage. Improved training in these inspections is expected to increase uptime. The VE developed to train workers for preshift inspections consists of three phases: the virtual tour, the virtual inspection and the shift simulation. The virtual tour introduces information necessary to conduct a preshift inspection by guiding the worker around a haul truck, identifying parts to be inspected and explaining defects to look for. The virtual inspection assesses retention as the worker navigates around a haul truck and identifies defects. During the shift simulation, the worker is shown a simulation of the work shift, which animates severe consequences of any overlooked defects to emphasise the importance of preshift inspections. To provide multiple training platforms, desktop and CAVEÖ versions of the training VE were created. Flux Studio was used to model the environment and to produce Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) files for the desktop version. DIVERSE, an application programming interface, was then used to implement a more realistic version of the VE in a CAVEÖ, a room-sized visualisation system. Initial feedback from mining colleagues indicates that the training VE may replace normal classroom training for preshift inspections in the future. As opposed to PowerPoint presentations and instructional videos, the training VE provides better spatial understanding of the location of parts and incorporates interactive features to actively engage drivers in the learning process, which may result in better retention. Initial feedback also indicates that minor improvements can be made to the virtual tour and virtual inspection phases.

The invitation to speak today was in the form of a single sentence instruction: How does your company run and how do you communicate from top to bottom? It looks like I'll have to let you into our little secret. The team at Croesus know what works for us but we've never talked about it with others - least of all presented it at a conference such as this. In fact we tend to avoid the jargon normally associated with Best Practice or TQM, however in our own way, each of our staff are 100 per cent loyal to our company's aim to maintain and strengthen our commercial success. Just how we achieve this at Croesus is the subject of this presentation today, but first a little history. My dear old grandfather arrived in Kalgoorlie, as a mining engineer 100 years ago. Do you think he would have chuckled if someone suggested to him that a hundred years later we would just be starting to understand Kalgoorlie's geological mysteries? Well, here we are 100 years later and Croesus Mining is fortunate to be part of a generation now realising the true potential of Kalgoorlie's Goldfields. This provides us with a very fertile field in which to sow the seeds we can obtain from the World's Best Practice in Mining and Processing. With each new mineral deposit being discovered, old theories are being exploded. Each new deposit has a personality of its own, leading to some belated pioneering theories of where to drill next, and how to reduce internal costs so that we can win the war against constantly increasing external costs. What we have now and what the old timers didn't have is a huge database of geological input spanning several gold booms and a couple of nickel booms. My only interest in history is to pick up the points that may help us for our future. This is what we are doing in our company which is something of a David, in the David to Goliath range of mining companies in Australia. As a humbling thought; of the 115 164 tonnes of gold that the world's mines have produced throughout history, four tonnes have been produced by Croesus Mining. That's equivalent to 0.003 per cent of the total world's gold production. In the past financial year we achieved a dividend yield of five per cent. To put this into perspective, that's over twice the dividend yield of BHP, Australia's largest company. As we are somewhat less known than BHP, let me spend a few moments giving some particulars of our company's background.

Mine planning is difficult. Even for small operations, it involves reasoning with complex variables and the practical difficulties of mining. It is also about predicting and planning the future in an unpredictable physical and economic environment. Yet we rely on a handful of individuals and their spreadsheets to tell us how to do it û planning the business and activities of mining to hopefully produce results that will please stakeholders. Does it work? Not as well as it could. Planning affects everyone in the organisation. Company executives are demanding more reliability and stability in cost and revenue forecasts from their operations. Management want to explore ways of being more cost effective. Miners and contractors want more useful plans and realistic targets. And the planners have to describe the method that will translate business objectives into implementable plans. Even with the use of computer technology a lot of effort is expended to produce plans that are largely qualified by the level of knowledge and experience of individuals. Better use of information and the application of Intelligent Technologies can improve the quality and reliability of mine plans and schedules. By capturing the knowledge within the organisation and speeding up the planning process, Intelligent Technologies allow more options to be considered more rigorously. But it is not just about technology. It is about how technology is implemented and embodied in the way the business is managed for performance. When this happens, the real benefits of better planning start to flow.

Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only.
